At the APRICOT/APNIC59 meeting held in Petaling Jaya in Malaysia last month, The internet society held it's first PIMF meeting. PIMF, or the Pulse Internet Measurement Forum is a gathering of people interested in Internet measurement in the widest possible sense, from technical information all the way to policy, governance and social questions. ISOC is interested in creating a space for the discussion to take place amongst the community, and bring both technologists and policy specialists into the same room. This time on PING, instead of the usual one-on-one format of podcast we've got 5 interviews from this meeting, and after the next episode from Geoff Huston at APNIC Labs we'll play a second part, with 3 more of the presenters from this session. First up we have Amreesh Phokeer from the Internet Society who manages the PULSE activity in ISOC, and along with Robbie Mitchell set up the meeting. Then we hear from Christoph Visser from IIJ Labs in Tokyo, who presented on his measurements of the "Steam" Game distribution platform used by Valve Software to share games. It's a complex system of application-specific source selection, using multiple Content Distribution Networks (CDN) to scale across the world, and allows Christoph to see into the link quality from a public API. No extra measurements required, for an insight into the gamer community and their experience of the Internet. The third interview is with Anand Raje, from AIORI-IMN, India's Indigenous Internet Measurement System. Anand leads a team which has built out a national measurement system using IoT "orchestration" methods to manage probes and anchors, in a virtual-environment which permits them to run multiple independent measurement systems hosted inside their platform. After this there's an interview with Andre Robachevsky from Global Cyber Alliance (GCA). Andre established the MANRS system, it's platform and nurtured the organisation into being inside ISOC. MANRS has now moved into the care of GCA and Andre moved with it, and discusses how this complements the existing GCA activities. FInally we have a conversation with Champika Wijayatunga from ICANN on the KINDNS project. This is a programme designed to bring MANRS-like industry best practice to the DNS community at large, including authoritative DNS delegates and the intermediate resolver and client supporting stub resolver operators. Champika is interested in reaching into the community to get KINDNS more widely understood and encourage its adoption with over 2,000 entities having completed the assessment process already. Next time we'll here from three more participants in the PIMF session: Doug Madory from Kentik, Beau Gieskins from APNIC Information Products, and Lia Hestina, from the RIPE NCC.

Wednesday, 16 August 2023   He called them together with the workers of similar occupation, and said: “Men, you know that we have our prosperity by this trade. Acts 19:25   The words of this verse continue what was said in the previous verse. They read, “whom, having assembled also the workmen of such things, said, “Men, you know that from this business is our wealth” (CG).   In the previous verse, Demetrius the silversmith was introduced. He made silver shrines of Artemis which brought the craftsmen no little profit. Luke continues this narrative while speaking of Demetrius and the craftsmen, saying, “whom, having assembled.”   Without going any further, one can deduce that the issue to be discussed is money. It was said that the craftsmen received no little profit from the making of these shrines. Now they are being assembled by Demetrius. Luke next records, “also the workmen of such things.”   These would be the unskilled laborers. The Greek word used to describe them is ergates. As can be seen, the root of the word is erg, such as in our modern word ergonomics. Being masculine, plural, it signifies workmen. After having gathered all these together, he said, “Men.”   Some translations here say “Sirs” instead of “Men.” However, this is simply an address to men regardless of class or position. For example, in Acts 16:30, where the jailor said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”, the word was one of respect for one with greater authority. Demetrius is addressing a crowd of men gathered together from various classes to discuss their livelihood.   He then continues, saying, “you know that from this business.” Now, using the word ergasia, he includes all of them in the thought. There is a large industry being considered. Demetrius is a silversmith, but the matter extends beyond him. It would affect miners, the smelters of metal, and many other steps in the process of making these shrines. It was a fully worked-out industry. And from it he next notes “is our wealth.”   The efforts of these workers were combined into one main business which is the Greek word euporia, a word found only here in the New Testament. It signifies what is derived from the business, meaning their monetary wealth. Thus, it is used in the sense of riches, wealth, etc.   Life application: When you think of something you pick up at the store, there is actually an entire business that is involved in making it, even something as simple as a pencil. In fact, if you considered everything involved in the making of a pencil, you would have a list many pages long. And yet, you would probably have forgotten something.   Think of what is involved in obtaining the wood, transporting it, etc. For example, a tree needs to have a saw to cut it down. But the saw is made of metal that had to be taken out of the ground and forged. The workmen need special clothes and personal protection for logging which must be obtained. There needs to be gas and oil for the chainsaw. Chains need to be replaced from time to time. The air filter might have been made in Wang Chung China and the spark plug may have been made in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.   These things had to be gathered, itemized, placed in plastic bags, boxed, labeled, etc. The system that is in place to make a single pencil is so vast that it is literally beyond our ability to fully appreciate it. Each of the people involved is a part of the process. If a pastor picks up a pencil to use, that pencil represents thousands or tens of thousands – even an innumerable number – of people directly or indirectly involved in getting it into his hands.   The same is true with the paper he writes on. Etc. He could not easily compose his sermon without such a system in place. Therefore, each of those people was a part of what it takes for a sermon to be written out. God is using the mass of humanity to continue His plan of redemption, and each person should be considered as a part of the process of getting to the end of that plan.   No person should be considered too far from God's grace to be given the gospel, and there should be no Christian who feels his or her job is not worthy of the notice of the Lord's attention in the greater scheme of things. What may seem unimportant or tedious as a profession may be an intricately needed part of getting the most important sermon ever written out to the public.   We just don't know how the things we do are going to affect things elsewhere and at some point in time. So do what you do to the glory of God. He knows exactly how you fit in, and He knows your worth, even if it escapes you. Trust that He has you exactly where you should be to get us to the end of this part of the story and onto the next part of what He is doing.   Lord God, thank You that we are included in the goodness of what Jesus has done for the people of the world. He came to redeem fallen man, and we are all a part of that state. Therefore, we must have value in this ongoing story that even we do not yet realize. The seemingly lowliest job or task may be an indispensable part of what is going on. May we do our part to Your glory because of this. Amen.

Wai Hong Fong learned the ropes in retail by helping his uncle in Melbourne, Australia sell giftware online. That later led him to spot an opportunity to supply small shops and cafés in Southeast Asia with point of sale tools to manage their inventory, orders and payments, and track performance. Previously with no easy access to technology, his customers were able to make the leap online. Wai Hong estimates there are 20 million such small businesses in Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines where his company StoreHub operates. “We want to kind of even out that technology inequality in the parts of the world where we felt that this is a major problem,” he says.During the pandemic, he threw small restaurants a lifeline when StoreHub provided them with a consumer-facing food delivery app within 48 hours.  Wai Hong talks about his entrepreneurial journey from Melbourne to Shanghai to Petaling Jaya on this episode of Rise of the Next.Subscribe here to episodes of Rise of the Next on major streaming platforms.LEGAL DISCLAIMERTHIS PODCAST IS INTENDED SOLELY FOR GENERAL INFORMATIONAL OR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY.  UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD ANY CONTENT PROVIDED AS PART OF ANY SUCH PROGRAMS, SERVICES OR EVENTS BE CONSTRUED AS INVESTMENT, LEGAL, TAX OR ACCOUNTING ADVICE BY 500 STARTUPS MANAGEMENT COMPANY, L.L.C. A brief explanation of what happened before the few years of the architecture studio program leading to the Site Context Specificity units 2016-17, 2018-19 & 2019-20, with sites at Kampung Baru, Bukit Ceylon, Kampung Kerinchi, and Petaling Jaya old town. However, one year earlier 2015-16 batch, I was working with GDP architects, and I learned what was not working. It is all to do with how we design the program and run it.  Then for 2016-17, I mentioned 'gentrification'', but it was not about that, as later Kevin referred to 'context specificity' (refer to his book in 2014) ... I did not get it at first, thinking of 'site issues-driven context'... but it's really a difference in the teaching philosophy. Those 3 years after were very experimental (in my opinion) in the history of University of Malaya's design thesis philosophy. Working with all the challenges around us, led by Kevin Mark Low, Lisa Foo, and I, Naziaty, we managed to plan, design, and facilitate a studio program that compelled students to engage with and gain confidence through the emphasis on detail design. Looking back on the podcast episodes we did earlier in 2020, you may recall this tremendous effort of trying to provide the best design thesis experience for the graduate. I am happy and proud that we managed to do this despite a lot of challenges and personal sacrifices. © 2022 Talk Architecture, Author: Naziaty Mohd Yaacob Photo (artwork): Street Market design thesis analysis by Low Joo Yin (batch 2018-19 on Kampung Kerinchi)

Architecture should enable and strengthen human connections – a key condition in creating resilient communities to face the 21st century catastrophes. How should we translate our concerns in the work that we do as studio tutors in the architecture design studio projects? This is the central thesis for the Unit 2 studio of the Master of Architecture (M Arch) design thesis studio projects, consisted of twenty-five (25) final year students from 2018 to 2020. The students collaborated to offer the design solutions based on their meticulous study of the site contexts in a ‘context specificity' approach, focused on deriving ‘specific solutions for specific problems', that included many hours of site observations as well as interviewing members of the two communities, in the 2018-2019 program at Kampung Kerinchi, Kuala Lumpur and in 2019-2020 program at the old town Petaling Jaya (section 1, 2, 3 and 4). Proposals were derived from the study of both areas, within local and communal private and public realm including religious buildings, markets, schools, housing, adaptive reuse of old buildings, hospital and health-care buildings, transportation buildings, day care and recreational facilities, all based on a site-context issues driven approach. A presentation to the local authorities, councilors and residents were presented at the end of each year. The studio were led by the architectural practitioners Kevin Mark Low and Lisa Foo with the University of Malaya academic, Naziaty Mohd Yaacob, as collaborators to the students' design process for the year-long academic program. This is a conclusion to the series on  'Re-examining community architecture: with site specific issues in local context situations'. The podcast is based on the essay submitted to the organisers of the International Forum for Architecture Thesis Design in Taiwan & Southeast Asia 2020 , National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan, in partnership with the Taiwan Ministry of Education.

Irfan Mahzan's honest opinion on what had transpired in his design thesis journey in 2019-2020, on how he left it late to get the concept right in semester 2, where he did the UiTM PJ Old Town, School of Built Environment. The criticism centred on the role of higher education institution such as UiTM, and the blue and white collar workers knowledge and skills. Touching on the pedagogical aspects of the construction professions such as civil engineering, and how theory and practical should be as learned together and not just theoretical learning only, the new campus design (adapted from the old UiTM site) was given a new perspective on learning by making the buildings and external spaces as experimentation sites on all aspects of the learning syllabus for future engineers. Prototyping of construction parts and testing them in the campus, will then be applied at Petaling Jaya old town to make the town better. INTRODUCTION TEASER! Watch out for the next interview with Wong Joe Yee on his design thesis project called: Vertical Neighbourhood Shared Space at Jalan Othman, Petaling Jaya.We will discuss about how in the year long 2019-2020 project, Joe Yee conceptualized at once: (1) adaptive reuse of a high rise building that is under-used and unpopular thus rejuvenating the use of the building for the existing tenants; (2) creating a socially significant focal point for the community; (3) green spaces and seamless connectivity with a "vertical park" concept and; (4) design approach to re-use old materials from the existing building and other buildings being demolished in the area. For example, Joe Yee studied the existing ecosystem of the neighbourhood, its character and specific needs of each stakeholders (residents, nursing home older residents, orphanage teens, school kids, university students, migrant workers, office workers, and shop owners) and find what's lacking and thus coming up with the programs of shops/ eateries, open spaces/park, hobby related facilities and hostel accommodations.

A hidden and unassuming church in Section 4, Petaling Jaya, the Assumption Church was actually a significant first religious building in PJ Old Town, built and established beside the Assunta Hospital. During our walkabout, we stumbled upon it as a unit and Geraldine, a Protestant, took the challenge, by first interviewing the pastor and later did a study on Catholicism, leading to a year long design thesis project from July 2019 to June 2020. The technical study of the building revealed that the church has not undergone major renovations due to the limited land area for expansion and proposed a solution that incorporated a "forest" next to the main prayer hall and creating a bigger congregation capacity. She arguably maintained the "hidden" and now, mysterious (enigmatic) church which totally uses cross-ventilation throughout with the "tropical architecture" feel. Aesthetically, we are curious with this unassuming building. Even in the hall, the columns echoes the "forest of trees" from outside, while you experience a sense of communing as one in nature. The "life and death" concept can be felt in one place, by accommodating the columbarium at the roof area and the prayer hall below. A very accessible, functional and spacious interior design that allows for everyone to move around, very elderly-friendly, indeed, Geraldine has transformed the church into a unified holistic design that is inspiring and sensitively humbling as well, with the huddling circular seating layout. Geraldine related how she had to cope with COVID-19 pandemic situation of online learning midway in semester 2 and how the tutors had helped her deal with the debates and arguments around her thesis, which either you love it or hate it! But a Catholic architect said: he loved it! Do listen in ... The kidnapping wasn’t his first taste of persecution; Pastor Raymond had been mailed a box of bullets as a warning to stop his ministry. This episode, I go to Cambridge to visit Anisa Sanusi. We discuss her move from Petaling Jaya in Malaysia to the UK when she was 19, and her subsequent journey to where she is today. We also get really nerdy over UI and UX chat and also go a bit silly. It's the first MGIF of 2016! Enjoy!
