Table for Two is a story told in vignettes - Evelyn Ross drifts betwen cities, going from New York City to Chicago, then to Los Angeles. With every step she takes closer to home, she treads farther away away and finds herself in a constantly spiraling dialogue betwen her past, present, and future. Exposited in seven points of view, the chain of storeis highlights the wit and dynamic penmanship of Amor Towles to craft the multi-faceted inner dialogue that goes on within people who are drifting and hoping to arrive into themselves. We enjoyed this read and we hope you'll enjoy this episode! Cheers booknerds!

We're talking about Butter by Asako Yuzuki (translated by Polly Barton) in this episode. Whew! There's a lot to unpack in this book, from delectable desciptions of food, to possible murders, the power struggle between the characters... this book is so much more than it seems. Inspired by the real case of the convicted con woman and serial killer, "The Konkatsu Killer", the books is about gourmet cook Manako Kajii sits in Tokyo Detention Centre convicted of the serial murders of lonely businessmen, who she is said to have seduced with her delicious home cooking. The case has captured the nation's imagination but Kajii refuses to speak with the press, entertaining no visitors. That is, until journalist Rika Machida writes a letter asking for her recipe for beef stew and Kajii can't resist writing back. What happens after this is a real roller coaster of a read. We hope you enjoy this episode and if you've read Butter, let us knwo what you think!SPECIAL ANNOUNCMENT: The Aesop Women's Library is back this year! Stay tuned for our special epsiodes in collaboration with Aesop Malaysia to find out the book selections this year, author interviews, and more! Live, laugh, love, and read well.

Spooky greeting booknerds. We know we're late but better late than never right? In this episode, we got to talk to the mysterious Kopi Soh, author of Looking After the Ashes. The book is a semi-biographical fiction of Kopi Soh's childhood stories from growing up in a Peranakan family filled with "wisdom". Hello booknerds! We're talking to Tokyo-based Malaysian writer Florentyna Leow in this episode about her debut book How Kyoto Breaks Your Heart. We know it's rather late in the day to release this episode but we've came across some titles that are just too good not to share. The promt for our August #tbntbookchallenge2023 is to read a book set in an ancient city or about an ancient civilisation. Eventhough these are some recommendations for our August challenge, we do hope some of these titles have piqued your interest and that you'll pick it up in your own time. We had so much fun researching and recording this episode and of course, our own TBR pile just got bigger. Cheers!

What do you do if you're a murder-magnet? Everywhere you go, someone dies. Mallory Veridian's solution is to blast off to space, to a space station called Eternity. Greetings booknerds! In this episode, Honey and DIana talk about a sci-fi cozy mystery called Station Eternity by Mur Lafferty. Sentient spaceships, all forms and manners of aliens, symbiotic alien relationships, a shuttle full of humans from space - what can go wrong?
Cheers booknerds! It's been a hot minute since you've heard our dulcet voices. Life certainly got crazy towards the end of 2022 but we've finally sat ourselves down in the studio to bring you some of our anticipated reads of the first half of 2023! Ranging from fantasy to non-fiction, a dash of a VERY much talked about 'memoir', dreadful and hopeful reads about climate change, we've come up with a mixed bag of titles and genres to suit everyone's taste. If you have not checked out our #tbntbookchallenge2023, do check it out and hopefully it prompts you to pick up one or a few interesting reads this year. Cheers!
On the 2nd of September 2022, we sat down with the incredible Karina Robles Bahrin to talk about her debut Epigram Fiction Prize 2022 winning book, The Accidental Malay at Lit Books. We had such a great time talking to Karina and she's a hoot, as you'll find out yourself in this episode. This recording was done in front of a live audience so do take note of the sound. Do pick up a copy of Karina's book and we hope you'll enjoy it as much as we did. Cheers!
Cheers book nerds! We're back and fair warning, we're GUSHING about Gabreille Zevin's new book, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow. This book helped Honey out of her reading slump and Diana loved it. It's described as "a love story, but it is not one you have read before", it's one of love between creative individuals and the sense of being able to understand and click with one another. The book is beautifully nuanced and it's such a good read. We cannot recommend this enough and we hope you'll love it too. NOTE: There are no spoilers in this episode so don't worry.
Man, it's August already and that means a new reading prompt for our #tbntbookchallenge2022! This month, we're challenging you to read a diverse or a classic YA book and we're back with some recommendations. Honey tackles some diverse and recent YA books while Diana is giving us some classic YA titles that you may or may not have heard of. Whatever you pick up, we hope it's an enjoyable read for you. Cheers!
As promised, we both read some books that gives you a feel-good feeling. They range from intelligent animals to benevolent ghosts, a holiday in an Italian town and figuring out your place in the world. As usual feel-good reads often have a vein of coping, grieving, figuring out where one fits (among other things) and all of the books we discuss today have some of that. Come meet a highly intelligent octopus, a woman who has a healing touch, and a girl who meets her own mother 30 years in the past. Intrigued? Listen on booklovers!Books Mentioned: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van PeltUnlikely Animals by Annie HartnettOne Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle
We are finally back with LIVE events! Rejoice fellow introverts who occasionally would like to see some like-minded people. We interviewed Hanna Alkaf at Lit Books (our favourite lil bookish spot) on her book Queen of the Tiles. We put up a scrabble game and was horrified to find out some of her fans DO NOT KNOW how to play Scrabble! ZOMG but we digress, it was a lovely event and we got to nerd out on words, talk about normalising mental health and her latest heroine, Najwa who it in Hanna's word, 'smarter than me by far.' We also got a sneak peak of her next middle grade book, Hamra and the Jungle of Memories and got to sign her scrabble notebook. *coughs* 'nerds'

Ian McEwan recommends it, calling it a compelling setting. Diana says it's one of the darkest books she has read in a long time comparing it to Shirley Jackson's The Lottery. Honey picked it up and did not put it down until she was finished with it. This book (originally in Dutch) was so deceptively simple to read that you don't realise it punching you in the gut until you're halfway through and thoroughly invested. Join us as we discuss a book that goes into how it's like working as a social media content moderator and what coming face-to-face daily with the scum of humanity does to you. Proceed with caution.
We're back with Part 2 of our book recommendations for June's #tbntbookchallenge2022! We have more retellings and books on historical figures PLUS 2 extra books that are to be released later this year for your consideration. We hope you'll enjoy this episode. Cheers!
Hello! We're back with another of our 30 Dirty episodes and we're talking retellings and books about historical figures for our June #tbntbookchallenge2022. As usual, we got carried away talking about books so we've decided to make this episode a two-parter. Don't say we're not a podcast that keeps giving. Cheers!
We're back! We have been away for some time but it's all to recharge and regroup our wits for a whole new season of TBNT! We're kicking off Season 6 with one of our favourite episodes to make, a TBR episode. We're covering some books that are to be released in June till September 2022 that have piqued our interest and we hope it does you too. Fair warning, there's A LOT of books. Stay tuned for more updates from us because things are opening up again and we have so many plans lined up. Cheers!
Hello booknerds! This is a special episode in collaboration with the launch of BookXcess's new website! We were invited to have a talk at The Powder Room with some lovely friends and we had a blast talking about all things bookish and being a booknerd. Sit in with us for this laidback session. Cheers!
Hello booknerds! We're on a short break but we thought of coming back on air to give you some recommendations for our TBNT May Challenge; the main character is an antihero or a book with an unreliable narrator. We thought of combining the two and came up with a list of interesting unreliable femme fatale reads for your consideration. Read well!
We've finally reached the end of a very.. interesting season. We thought of highlighting some middle grade reads and if you've never thought of picking up a middle grade book, you're kinda missing out!Honey comes in clutch with some interesting horror reads (don't worry, nothing too traumatizing), while Diana strikes a more hopeful and wholesome tune with her reads. Enjoy!
For April's challenge we urge you to pick up a read that has an element of nature in the title OR explores a world beyond earth. Honey picked a whole bunch of cool graphic novels, all sci-fi of course, while Diana has a mix bag from YA fantasy to murder mystery, essays to romance, this is a really fun #tbntbookchallenge2022Books mentioned (in order): The Girl Who Fell Beneath The Sea by Axie Oh Invisible Kingdom by G. Willow Wilson and Christian Ward These Precious Days by Ann PatchettDescender Vol. 1: Tin Stars by Jeff Lemire and Dustin NguyenPeach Blossom Spring by Melissa FuBitch Planet by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine De LandroThe Absolute Book by Elizabeth KnoxThe Black Incal by Alexandro Jodorowsky and MoebiusWinter's Orbit by Everina MaxwellSentient by Jeff Limire, Gabriel Walta, and Steve Wands Dead Silence by S.A. We are back after a sudden two week break (it has been balls to walls busy for Honey) but huzzah! It's a book chaser where we discuss Emily Itami's sparking debut Fault Lines and Jessica Au's contemplative Cold Enough For Snow. There is honesty here with strong female voices, introspection of where you are in life, meditation, travel and a sense of place. You'd want to visit Tokyo and Kyoto after this because both books bring you on a journey, not only of a physical one but an internal one too. Come travel with us this week!
Alrighty for March #tbntbookchallenge2022, we urge you to pick up a medical read (i.e. doctor's memoir, stuff set in clinics, hospitals all that jazz) OR a book about mental health. And we found a lot that we want to dive into as well. Will these reads make you feel better? Listen on! We have a bunch of recommendations ranging from non-fiction to fiction reads.
We are still in murder mysteries because well, there are so many good ones out there. This time we are going into 'cozies' - whodunnits usually with a lovable protagonist and set in small towns. There are suspects. There is usually pets. There might be a crumpet or two. Cozies are delightful because at the end of the day, the bad guy/girl gets caught and all is right with the world today. Join us as we go deep into 'cozies with the most-ies' (ugh that's bad) with Richard Osman's second novel The Man Who Died Twice and Nita Prose's The Maid.
Here are books! With animals in them, some giving you their very honest opinions, some told by the people who love them. We've found a whole lot of interesting books from a memoir of a famous chimp to a demonic goat the lives in a monastery. You'll meet a lofty tortoise and a fox who doesn't think himself sly. There are some sausage dogs! Because how can there not be? Whatever it is, we hope you have a great time reading this month!
Hello folks! Here's an edited version our LIVE interview with David Levithan and Jennifer Niven on their collaborative book Take Me With You When You Go. It was a really cool interview where we talk about writing, being ambassadors of empathy and what they are reading too. Have a listen to find out about the book which is an epistolary novel where a brother and sister email to each other what they are going through in life.
Some of the big ticket books for the first half of 2022 is here! We probably do another one in May since we've hardly covered anything and still managed to natter for almost an hour. Here are some book highlights and some excerpts so you can figure out if you fancy picking up any of the books in the next few months. Books mentioned in this episode (in order) :To Paradise - Hanya Yanagihara The Maid - Nita Prose Violeta - Isabel AllendePandora - Susan Stokes-ChapmanDaughter of the Moon Goddess - Su Lynn TanThe Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea - Axie OhQueen of the Tiles - Hanna AlkafCold Enough for Snow - Jessica AuAnonymous Sex - edited by Hillary Jordan & Cheryl Lu-Lien TanMidnight in Everwood - M.A. KuzniarCandy House - Jennifer EganTell me an Ending - Jo HarkinSea of Tranquility - Emily St. John MandelPortrait of a Thief - Grace D. Yes, we are back to normal TBNT programming! It was a crazy end of year so we could only wrap things up at the beginning of 2022 (the tried to put in anticipated reads and then kinda failed hehe). We had a lot to say about the stuff we did last here. These are some highlights, some of our feelings of doing a podcast for over 3 years and some books we absolutely loved last year.Cheers!
We are back deep diving into one of our favourite reads this year - She Who Became The Sun. Joining us is author Shelley Parker-Chan herself and it felt like the fitting book to end our year with. Firstly because it's such an epic and emotional read and secondly because it totally fits into all our gender discussions of the past week. We talk all sorts from fan-fiction writing to bitchy eunuchs and a protagonist that burns with want and how it fits in the world of Asian historical fantasy.
In our final episode for our Literature for Equality project we look into the suffrage movement in Britain during World War One and talk about the fight for women's rights- the right to vote, the right for an education and the right to have a job. Today these are things a lot of us take for granted but not too long ago, this was not a given. We are where we are today by standing on the shoulders of these plucky women.
