In military contexts, baptism of fire specifically refers to a soldier's first exposure to enemy fire. // The newly recruited player faced a baptism of fire as the team went head to head with their greatest rival. See the entry > Examples: "It was my first day on the slopes, and in my naivety I had tackled Avoriaz's famous Boulevard des Skieurs after one three-hour lesson, before I could even really turn. The military sense of baptism of fire can be found in, among other texts, a 1907 history of a Massachusetts regiment in the Civil War: "That night we camped sixteen miles from Baton Rouge where we remained until the 21st, on which day we received our baptism of fire." Users of that sense, referring to a soldier's first exposure to enemy fire, as well those employing the more general sense of an especially difficult initiation, both allude (knowingly or unknowingly) to a Biblical passage: "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me . . . will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire" (Matthew 3:11, RSV). The use of baptism of fire to refer to such a spiritual baptism dates to at least the early 1600s. I was only 14 when I was baptised in the Holy Ghost. What I wanted was what was in the Bible, the baptism of fire, of power. I knew that when the fire came down on 120 people in the Upper Room, they became fiery evangelists – and immediately Peter held the first evangelistic crusade of the early Church! You see, they were searching for God, waiting expectantly! And on the day of Pentecost, the miracle happened – the same Holy Spirit that had transformed Jesus, the same dynamic power that turned Him from the carpenter's son into the Son of God, the same power that raised Him from the dead – this same power came on the first church, changed their lives and suddenly there was an explosion of evangelism, thousands of people saved – people who had come to Jerusalem from all over the world to celebrate the Jewish festival of Pentecost – these were the ones who found the reality of salvation, the miracles of healing – and now these were the ones who went out in the power of the Holy Spirit to spread the news of salvation worldwide. First evangelists, then missionaries! The same explosion can happen today! When I was searching for the baptism of the Holy Spirit, I wanted something explosive that would change my life. If you do not want that – if you want a quiet life, enough money to buy your food, some nice clothes – you will get what you want, but nothing more!

Many believers are seeking a new anointing, a new power, something extra to what they already have, a Toronto Blessing, or other phenomena. I went to Jerusalem forty years ago without receiving a new anointing. Why? What I am seeking is already within me! I have it now, I am not waiting for a new anointing, I have all the power I need in my spirit now! How? Well fifty years ago I was seeking to be filled, baptised with the Holy Spirit. When I received, it was a manifestation of fire, of power, speaking with tongues like they did on the Day of Pentecost – and miracles soon began to follow. What a baptism of Power and of Fire I received that day! I received the Holy Spirit, all the mighty Power of God, everything. Now that powerful anointing which before had been outside of me, that third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, was now IN ME! There is only one Holy Spirit – HE is IN me! Not outside, I am not waiting for another Holy Spirit – HE, the Spirit who raised up Jesus from the dead, who was in Paul and Peter, that mighty, miracle-working power of the Great God I am boasting about, is in me now.

We've got to be changed, transformed, by the fire and the power of the Holy Spirit! If you want to be filled with the Holy Spirit, if you want to be filled with the power of God, you have got to be emptied first; only then can God fill you with all His power, fire and glory! God baptised me with the Holy Ghost and fire! And I want to tell you that the fire and power is stronger now than it was 70 years ago! I often say that God gets more wonderful every day - but no, He doesn't change, I do! The reason God gets more wonderful and powerful is because each day He reveals Himself to me more and more - and every revelation shows the reality of who He is! A debutant Clare County Councillor could be in line for a baptism of fire in his new role. It follows a special meeting at Áras Chontae An Chláir, in which Conor and James Ryan have been officially ratified as councillors to replace two of Clare's newly elected TDs. With the end of one era, comes the beginning of another, and the departure of TDs Joe Cooney and Donna McGettigan to Leinster House paves the way for new public representatives to take centre stage of this county's domestic affairs. Deputy Cooney's promotion, however, throws another spanner into the works, as the Killaloe Municipal District is now bereft of its Cathaoirleach. One possible scenario could see Leas Cathaoirleach Maghera Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat Hayes maintain order for the first six months of the year, with Fine Gael's Conor Ryan taking over from there as per the council's power-sharing agreement. Another contender could also enter the fray, but this will all be decided at the next meeting of the Killaloe MD in January. Cllr Ryan says he'll look forward to any challenge that comes his way. A Clare based former Air Freight Specialist is aiming to spearhead initiatives to increase traffic at Shannon Airport for his council tenure. Shannon Banks native James Ryan has also been formally ratified to Clare County Council following a special meeting yesterday. He will also sit on the HSE Regional Health Forum West, along with the local authority's Memorial, Traveler Accommodation and Clare Local Development Committees. Councillor Ryan has big ambitions for his electoral area.

This last Sunday, we wrapped up our Baptism Series with a teaching on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus intended you to live a life completely submerged in His Holy Spirit. Throughout the New Testament we see the filling of the Holy Spirit as a repeated experience in the life of the believer.  The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a baptism of love. It's designed to purify you, to lead you, and to put God's glory on display through you. God has designed it so that for your whole life you are surrounded by and filled with the fire of His love so that you can become love.   May we continually open ourselves up to be filled again with His Spirit that we might experience all that He has for us!
