For this entrepreneur, the American Dream came true in Eureka Park at CES. The year was 2020 and Shark Tank scouts were combing the floor, as they've done for about a decade, searching for exciting strokes of tech genius. When they met Robbie Cabral, they were blown away. This episode of CES Tech Talk explores how Robbie and his padlock innovation, the fingerprint-activated BenjiLock, made their way to the Shark Tank studio, earning a highly lucrative deal with the show's “Mr. Wonderful” shark, Kevin O'Leary. Today, the biometric BenjiLock is sold through Hampton Products International, and can be purchased across retail's top outlets including Walmart, Best Buy, Lowe's, Ace Hardware and Amazon. Learn what Supervising Casting Producer Mindy Zemrak saw in Robbie, how BenjiLock stood out, and strategies Eureka Park exhibitors can apply as they contend for the Shark Tank spotlight. Could you be next? Find out what it takes, and what to expect at CES 2024.
Since we first encountered BenjiLock in Eureka Park in 2017, the company has changed a lot. Those early days were at a tiny booth with a non-functioning prototype. Before we got to see them again, the company had been on Shark Tank and partnered with Mr. Wonderful Kevin O'Leary. O'Leary put together a partnership to help Founder Robbie Cabral bring the product to market with manufacturing, sales, and more. Today, the company is looking at its next phase in life, including helping to support other startups at CES.What is BenjiLock?BenjiLock is the world's first biometric padlock with a traditional key. The importance of having a biometric padlock allows you to go to the gym without having to carry anything with you. We've all had a phone fall out of our pocket or had to go look for our keys later on. With the BenjiLock, you can safely leave your items in a locker without having to carry a key.The importance of having a physical key allows for a backup. Batteries die - and always at inopportune times. With other smart padlocks, if the battery dies, you're possibly out of luck. You'll have to cut the expensive lock off and throw it away. However, with the physical key, you've got a way to open the lock in that situation.BenjiLock also now offers a wider range of products. The line now includes a biometric deadbolt and biometric bike lock, offering the convenience of unlocking your door or bike without keys. BenjiLock hopes to revolutionize home security, bike safety, and more with its innovative technology. By expanding the ecosystem, more people in more situations can go about their days without the need to carry as many keys.BenjiLock at CES 2023This year, the company took a different approach to CES. Rather than having its large blue booth on the show floor, Robbie spent his time helping to bring awareness to other startups exhibiting at the show in Eureka Park. BenjiLock sponsored the startup pitch event on the CTA Stage with Canon, allowing BenjiLock to help new startups get their start by giving them a platform at CES. BenjiLock was able to use its resources and experience from standing out in Eureka Park just six years ago to give back and help other startups get their big break. This event was in partnership with the CTA Foundation, the non-profit arm of the Consumer Technology Association, the organization that oversees CES. The event was intended to showcase the best startups and entrepreneurs in technology, giving BenjiLock a chance to help out where they originally got started. Their support of the CTA Foundation really shows how far they've come since their first appearance at CES in 2017.BenjiLock has gone from a small startup with big dreams to an established company ready to give back. The company is continuing to innovate, bringing biometric technology to the masses in a way we've never seen before. Robbie Cabral looks forward to what the future holds as the brand continues to grow and expand their product line. BenjiLock has come a long way since 2017, and with its support of other startups through initiatives like this partnership with the CTA Foundation, the company is setting itself up for even more success in the years to come.SummaryThe entirety of the BenjiLock product line is available now through the company's website, as well as Amazon, Ace Hardware, and more.Interview by Todd Cochrane of Geek News Central and Scott Ertz of F5 Live: Refreshing Technology.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. The last two years have created a lot of new scenarios for the world. Particularly, the business world has had to adapt to a lot of adjusted scenarios. Much work has begun to be from home, rather than in offices. This forced IT to change the way they think of their corporate networks to allow for greater variability, while also protecting data. But, the biggest part of industries to be affected by the altered way of thinking has been events, like CES. Our good friend Steve Winter from Brotman-Winter-Fried discusses some of the changes and how to deal with them.Virtual versus physical eventsThe general consensus for businesses has been that virtual events are incredibly difficult and less productive. Even though the overall expense of setting up a virtual exhibit versus a physical one is significantly less expensive, the number of people you interact with is lessened. If you look at it from a pure numbers game, the more people you talk to, the more likely you are to interact with someone who might want to do business with your company or even invest in the product offering. With fewer people, there are fewer chances and therefore fewer successes. However, currently, physical events are not as well attended as in the past. For example, Steve Winter refers to the number 40% for CES 2022. Everything felt like it was at 40% of capacity - the number of exhibitors, the number of attendees, and even the number of media. Some of this is because of personal fears or legitimate medical situations. PArt of our team was forced to stay remote for CES 2022 because of medical situations. Others were prohibited from travel because of international restrictions. We spoke with companies ahead of CES that said they were having to drop out because, even if they could get into the US, they might not be able to go home. How to address the issuesOne of the hardest but most direct is to tough it out. Being in attendance in person is simply the best option. The accidental interactions you have with people on the show floor of an event like CES are unable to be replicated by a virtual venue. Many of the long-term partners we have, such as BenjiLock and Monster Illuminessence, were born out of chance encounters while wandering the show floor with no real intentions. With virtual events, it really comes down to curation and having a very strong plan, which completely eliminates the chance encounter. The second great option is to have a strong PR partner, such as Brotman-Winter-Fried. They can help pick up some of the slack for those who can not attend in person, and enhance the opportunity for great conversations. They can also set up some planned conversations through their existing network of connections. In the past few years, some of our best guests have come to us through some of the big names in the CES PR space - namely Steve and his partners.SummaryTo learn more about Brotman-Winter-Fried or to contact Steve Winter, head to the company's website.Interview by Todd Cochrane of Geek News Central.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. What if you could protect your belongings with the touch of a finger? It would mean not having to carry a key at the gym or pool. It would mean not having to copy your house key every time you have guests over. BenjiLock has made all of this and more possible, with its innovative fingerprint technology that can be used to secure everything from bikes to closets. What is BenjiLock?BenjiLock was featured on ABC's hit show Shark Tank, and through its partnership with Hampton Products International, the brand has expanded rapidly. With 30+ years of experience in security and hardware innovations, Hampton Products International has helped the company take its fingerprint technology to new heights. Today, they are expanding into a portfolio of products, including locks for your bikes, drawers, closets, lockers, and home. How BenjiLock WorksBenjiLock uses fingerprint technology to protect the things you love. Simply program your lock with up to ten fingerprints, and unlock it by placing any of those fingers on the lock's sensor. Most BenjiLock devices also allow you to lock or unlock your belongings using a standard key or combination code (numbers 0-99).BenjiLock's fingerprint sensor can be used in wet or dry conditions, making it ideal for use at the gym pool, beach, etc. It also includes an automatic locking mechanism that will lock after five seconds if left unlocked manually. The light on the front will change from green (locked) to red (unlocked), letting you know at a glance if your belongings are secure.BenjiLock's fingerprint sensor is highly accurate, but is not foolproof - it needs a clear reading of at least three ridges (or whorls) to unlock. This is another reason why most of the devices include a key. It is not recommended for use on electronic devices, such as laptops or tablets.Different BenjiLock devicesThe different devices are for different purposes and use different locking mechanisms. BenjiLock Bike and padlocks use a hardened steel shackle that attaches to the object you wish to secure. The bike lock is obviously designed to protect your bike but can be used on a scooter or motorcycle, as well. The padlock is the most versatile, as it is designed to go anywhere a traditional padlock would go: a locker, cabinet, shed, and more.BenjiLock Door allows you to replace your old deadbolt lock without additional tools; simply remove your old deadbolt from inside of the door and install the lock using the included template in under five minutes (no drilling required). It can be used on any door, though it is designed for exterior use. It runs on 4 AA batteries and can last 6 months or longer, depending on how often it is used. It also pairs perfectly with the Brinks Push-Pull-Rotate doorknobs. This large variety of lock types gives you the ability to determine what is most important to you and protect it with a lock you know will keep it safe.SummaryThe BenjiLock products are available from a variety of courses, including the company's website, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware, and Amazon.Interview by Scott Ertz of F5 Live: Refreshing Technology.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. In 2014, Robbie Cabral was down on his luck. “I was working my normal job and, sadly, I got laid off,” he tells Andy Jacob, CEO, of Dotcom Magazine. Cabral continued, “The same day I got laid off, my daughter was born.” Then, a simple idea turned his situation around: While at the gym, he wondered “how come there is not just a lock that you can open with a fingerprint, but also with a traditional key,” he recalls. It would be a convenient and safe upgrade from commonplace, analog locks, he thought. That idea led him to invent BenjiLock, a patented product that does just that. He took his invention, which won accolades at the annual Consumer Electronics Show, all the way to ABC's “Shark Tank,” where he landed a $200,000 investment from Kevin O'Leary in exchange for 15 percent equity in the company. Applauded as “the essence of the American Dream” by Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary, Robbie Cabral is no stranger to the Edison Awards, taking home the award for the category of ‘Consumer Sensors and Biometrics' in 2018. His invention, BenjiLock, is widely renowned as one of the most impactful modern-day innovations for personal security, using groundbreaking fingerprint technology. Robbie's innovations took the prestigious 2021 TWICE Picks CES Award for its brand new BenjiLock Fingerprint Bike Lock, Gear Brain's Best Tech of CES 2021 for its Fingerprint Sport Lock, and Digital Trends chose BenjiLock as one of the Editor's Pick Best Smart Locks and Top Tech CES 2021 awards for its Fingerprint Door Lock About BenjiLock: Based in Los Angeles, California, and founded in 2014 by inventor and entrepreneur Robbie Cabral, BenjiLock is redefining the personal security experience using hybrid technology with the consumer in mind. After its recent Shark Tank success, Robbie Cabral landed Kevin O'Leary as an investor with a 15% equity stake in the company. Next, he secured a licensing partnership with Hampton Products International, the leader in security and hardware innovations and makers of BRINKS locks, giving the startup over 30 years of manufacturing and production experience. Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. The folks at BenjiLock by Hampton are continuing to innovate when it comes to fingerprint lock technology. At CES this year…they announced a new Bike Lock and a Fingerprint Door Lock…as well as a Fingerprint Sport Lock...

Since its first outing at CES 2017, Robbie Cabral, founder of BenjiLock, has consistently worked to bring his vision of a more convenient and more secure world to reality. Our team has had the privilege of following his journey, from concept to Shark Tank and Hampton Products to today.Last year, just before the world came to a halt, Robbie stopped by our studio to discuss upcoming products. While 2020 took a toll on the timeline of these new products, Robbie and the team at Hampton Products have managed to bring all of these products to market for 2021.Our favorite new product last year was the BenjiLock Door Lock. In fact, we liked it so much, we secure our office and studio with one. We were in good company, as the product received a CES Innovation Award last year. This product merges the best of both companies, with BenjiLock's fingerprint reading technology combined with the long history of security products made by Hampton Products. Honestly, we have really enjoyed the convenience of the fingerprint reader for entrance by our team. We added to it the Hampton Push-Pull-Rotate doorknob, so even with our hands full of equipment, we can open the door.Coming at a close second was the new bike lock. When exercising, I always try to carry as little as possible, and that includes my keys. Being able to lock a bicycle while out without the need for a key is ideal for my experience. It seems like I cannot be the exception, but likely closer to the rule. Anyone wearing proper cycling gear will find it difficult to store a key for any lock, let alone their bike. The BenjiLock Bike Lock is available for $79.99 and the Door Lock is available for $159.99. Robbie Cabral - Benjilock (Shark Tank) Robbie is the inventor, CEO and founder of BenjiLock, the world's first traditional padlock with fingerprint technology. The traditional padlock hasn't seen any innovation in over 100 years, and BenjiLock has been named the biggest innovation in padlocks since the introduction of the key.
Robbie came to the States in his 20s from Dominican Republic with his band partners to pursue music. He was raised by a single mother and he never intended to invent anything. He did loads of odd jobs like valet parking, doing real estate, working in restaurants, and hotels. Robbie’s first side hustle was selling collectibles online and after it wasn’t working out, he ended up selling the business just to recoup some of the debt. While being laid off, depressed and at home with his wife and three little kids he realized that he needed to get his act together and start doing something. He joined the gym to lose some weight and get back into shape. This is where BenjiLock was born. BenjiLock LinkedIn

In this episode, Residential Tech Today Executive Editor Jeremy Glowacki chats with Robbie Cabral, inventor, CEO, and founder of Los Angeles-based BenjiLock, a finger-print enabled padlock manufacturer that was introduced to the tech industry at CES 2017 and soon after was made famous on ABC’s SharkTank. Padlocks for gym lockers and bikes aren’t typically the focus of Residential TechTalks, but Cabral is expanding his focus into the smart home, so we’ll discuss that development and more in this episode. If ever there was a poster company for CES Eureka Park success story, it would be BenjiLock. Since we first met founder Robbie Cabral at his first CES several years ago, he has gone on to huge success. After taking his prototype to Shark Tank, Robbie and his Shark Tank investor Kevin O'Leary, took the brand to the team at Hampton Products because of their expertise in security products. Today, the company has grown its product line in new and exciting ways. The original product in the line, the biometric padlock, has been improved, with new colors being added to the category. The closest companion, the luggage lock, has also seen improvements in the last year. The most important addition is the soft lock, which is a common feature of luggage locks.2020 is going to see a new collection of devices from the company, however. The most prominent will be the BenjiLock Deadbolt. This product is the perfect pairing of the technology of BenjiLock and the knowhow of Hampton Products. This lock has everything you could possibly want from a connected deadbolt, and more. In addition to the biometrics that BenjiLock is known for, the lock features a physical key plus keypad. The lock also works with the Array platform, making it not just a connected deadbolt, but a smart one, too.Other new products for 2020 include a bike lock and a drawer lock. The bike lock will feature two lengths, and all of what we expect from BenjiLock, including a physical key - the hallmark of the product line. The drawer lock will allow you to turn nearly any standard drawer into a locked one. This can be good if you have a questionable roommate, or if you are just trying to protect valuables. The new products will premiere as the year goes on.For more information on the current BenjiLock products, to make a purchase, or to follow the company's development, check out their website.Interview by Scott Ertz of F5 Live: Refreshing Technology and Christopher Jordan of The Talking Sound.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. In addition to the upcoming BenjiLock deadbolt, the Array by Hampton smarthome platform is growing and making a name for itself. We saw the beginnings of the platform in 2018, and all of the excitement from that CES is coming together at this CES.But, the crown jewel for the year is the BenjiLock deadbolt. The technology that Robbie created being implemented into a deadbolt is exciting enough, but the depth of the product offing is more than just that. The technology works in extreme weather conditions, which was an important piece of the puzzle for CEO Kim Kelley. They also focused on battery life, so that the lock maintains its convenience longterm, rather than having to charge or change a battery on a regular basis. Mr. Kelley says that it's the difference between a technology company trying to figure out how to make a lock, and a security company adding technology into their existing line. But, what makes the BenjiLock deadbolt extra exciting is its integration into the Array smarthome platform. Kim Kelley differentiates smarthome from connected home by saying that a smarthome does what you want when you want. That's an important line because it sets the expectations for what Array is capable of. This smarthome platform ranges from indoor lights and cameras to the outdoor coach lights and garage door opener. One of the key features of Array is Lockdown Mode. This is the sweep you make at night to make sure your lights are off, the doors are closed and locked, the garage door is down, and the thermostat is set to the right temperature. Through the Array platform, you can make this sweep virtually, from the comfort of your bed or the relative comfort of a hotel room across the country. To beef up the security credentials of the system is the coach lights. We saw these in action in 2018, and they are truly impressive. They look like a traditional outdoor light, intended to be part of your home - not like a traditional security light with a giant camera attached. But, they do offer a security camera with impressive quality, and the ability to send triggers into the system based on motion by people. This is always an important distinction because a traditional motion light turns on if someone drives too close to your house in their car. There is also a tethered light so that one on each side can come on, dim, and turn off together, without having to have a camera on each light. The Array by Hampton line of products will be releasing throughout the year. One of the things our team loves the most about CES is getting to see companies start out in Eureka Park, the show's startup section, and end up having a major presence on the show floor. The best example of that transformation is definitely BenjiLock. When we first encountered Robbie Cabral in 2017, he had a small booth in Eureka Park with a large, nonfunctioning prototype. The idea was sound, but the technology wasn't there just yet.The following 12 months were big for BenjiLock, with a successful appearance on Shark Tank and a big investment from Kevin "Mr. Wonderful" O'Leary. Following O'Leary's investment, the company got the attention of Hampton Products, makers of the Brinks Home Security line of products. For sure, Hampton is a company that knows security products and brought BenjiLock into the fold, with a large presence at CES 2018.Since then, another year of growth. In 2019, not only did Robbie have working products to show off, he announced the availability of the locks. These biometric padlocks offer both fingerprint scanning, as well as traditional key unlocking. The key is perfect in the event the battery dies, or you need to give someone else access to the device temporarily. In addition to the standard padlock, Robbie has announced a new, smaller model, with a very specific purpose: travel. The smaller BenjiLock is designed as a luggage lock and is TSA-compatible. That means that you can use it on your suitcase when going through the airport, but you don't have to worry about the lock being cut off if security needs to access your bag.The standard BenjiLock padlock is available now from ACE Hardware, Home Depot, Lowes, and more. The new TSA-compatible BenjiLock padlock will be available in the near future.Interview by Scott Ertz of F5 Live: Refreshing Technology.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. Roberto Cabral is the CEO and Founder of BenjiLock, the world's first traditional, rechargeable padlock that was the CES 2017 Innovation Awards Honoree in the Smart Home product category. In 2017, he successfully pitched to the sharks on Shark Tank and successfully struck a deal with Mr. Wonderful, Kevin O'Leary. Show Notes: “In the end, it's all about your gut. Whatever you're doing in life, if your gut is telling you to do this or do that, probably go with what you feel instead of just listening to what other people are telling you what to do. If I went with what people were saying about the whole journey beyond Shark Tank, I probably would have quit already because a lot of people told me, you're not going to make this or this is not going to work out, you're not going anywhere or that's a stupid idea…I kept going with my gut and my passion…in the end, your own gut and passion will tell you if it is going to work out or not”. Those were some inspiring words from this week's guest on the Entrepreneurial You Podcast, Roberto Cabral. He shares his inspiring entrepreneurial journey from being raised by his single mom in the Dominican Republic, forming a musical band and later moving to the United States with his band members to get a taste of the American Dream; to pursue music and get discovered. Things did not work out and while the other band members went back home to the Dominican Republic, Roberto stayed in the United States. Find out how this jobless, married father of three was able to come up with the idea of BenjiLock while going to the gym at nights, and how trusting his gut feeling lead him to persevere and to be able to pitch his business successfully on the acclaimed Shark Tank.
