While some Christian leaders and churches address the topic of sex well, too many either mishandle it or ignore it altogether. We here at the virtual kitchen table have heard the stories, good and bad. And we're bringing our collective wisdom today to share what we wish more churches knew about sex and how to encourage church leaders to talk more biblically, authentically, and respectfully about it. Today's guest on Cucumber Talks is Shara Drimalla, a content writer for Bible Project, which is a nonprofit animation studio making the unified story of the Bible accessible to everyone everywhere. Here's what we discussed: How Shara used Bible Project videos while she was a high school Bible teacher and later achieved her dream of working at Bible Project Bible Project's upcoming Paradigm series and upcoming app release. Paradigm is Bible Project's breakdown for how to read the Bible How Shara reads the Bible differently now than when she was in her 20s. How as kids the Bible was mostly a collection of disjointed stories Some people, particularly seminary students, are reluctant to change their beliefs about the Bible What is the Bible NOT? Shara believes the Bible isn't a rulebook, a theology dictionary, or a devotional grab bag. Despite good intentions, people who read the Bible in these ways are making it into something it's not. Shara's and Bible Project's view is that the Bible is one unified story that leads to Jesus. The Bible is an ancient book written in multiple literary styles with a variety of authors and languages other than English. Applying a plain modern reading of the Bible is not an accurate way of truly understanding it. Why it's important to read the Bible as one unified story, even if you're not a Bible Scholar. Resources like Bible Project make the Bible's story more accessible and easy to understand How to approach the Bible like you're visiting a foreign country instead of approaching it with your cultural view of the world The Bible is full of design patterns that weave together an amazing story. Shara summarizes the entire Bible's unified story from Genesis to Revelation There are different views on the atonement, what Jesus's death and resurrection actually meant. The Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) pointed toward Jesus. The authors in the New Testament show what Jesus's death meant by referencing the Old Testament Jesus's message was countercultural and multicultural. He introduced a new way to be human and invited everyone, not just Jews. Expanding the Kingdom of Heaven is about spreading the story of Jesus. The Kingdom of Heaven on earth exists wherever there are followers of Jesus Shara gives an overview of Bible Project's 7 Pillars which describe their approach to reading the Bible The benefits of reading the entire Bible in Chronological order and Bible Project's resources that help Openhanded and closehanded issues in Christianity, agreeing on the core beliefs every Christian should hold vs Biblical views that are more up for interpretation Resources Mentioned In This Episode: The Lost World Series by John Walton Bible Project - How to Read the Bible Exploring My Strange Bible Podcast - The Amazing Jonah More Bible Project videos: Sacrifice and Atonement Tree of Life Gospel of the Kingdom Heaven and Earth Contact Cucumber Talks Have questions, feedback, or ideas for the show? “So they taught in Judah, and had the Book of the Law of the Lord with them; they went throughout all the cities of Judah and taught the people. And the fear of the Lord fell on all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, so that they did not make war against Jehoshaphat.” 2 Chronicles 17:9It is the Word of God that brings peace, that is what it is. If we go to Romans 10:14:“How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?” People need the Lord desperately now, more than ever before. Ignorance, I looked up the Oxford Dictionary, means lacking knowledge or awareness in general. Jesus said in John 17:17:“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” People are perishing at the moment because of a lack of knowledge of the Word of God. We know that scripture in Proverbs 29:18:“Where there is no vision (where there is no knowledge) the people perish.”You see, people don't know about the power that is available to them through Almighty God. They might be educated but they need Jesus. That famous British Prime Minister, Lloyd George, said: “Education without Christ simply makes clever little devils.”Now, that is not funny. That is very true. I remember years ago taking the Seedsower - that big yellow 20-ton truck, with one word on the side of it, JESUS... We took 20 tons of Bibles, clothes and food right up to the North of Central Africa, where Tanzania joins with the Congo - right in the North of Zambia. And I tell you what, those poor people were very poor. Some of them hardly had any clothes on. But you know, the funny thing was, they didn't want the clothes, they didn't want the food, they wanted the Bible - Not a tract or the Gospel of John, they wanted the whole Bible, Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms - they wanted the Bible! I will never forget driving home, coming back and driving past these little villages, seeing people sitting out in the sun and some of them on the edge of their little thatch huts, reading the Word of God!You and I need to pray desperately, not only for South Africa but especially for the first world nations, that they get back to the Bible.God bless you and have a lovely day!
What's the big difference anyway? This was a really tough subject to talk about! Not because I didn't know why or how, but because it's TRUTH. SO many people have the WRONG idea of what it means to follow Christ. A lot of people may just even be turned away from the idea of religion because they had a BAD experience within a false religion... In this episode, I'm going to share the biggest reasons why the practice of RELIGION is different than a religion based on RELATIONSHIP. What is the difference between Christianity and every other religion there? Can we ADD and take things OUT of the Bible? “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgement day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But i will reply, ‘I never knew you. Away from me you evildoers.” Matthew 7:21-23 If you LOVE this episode please share it with your friends or even on Social Media! Make sure to tag me though so I can say thank you!! Wanna connect? In this episode, Rev Karla discusses how sin has been weaponized throughout history, the definition of sin, and how to release yourself from others' judgment of your sins. Sin should never be used as a weapon to condemn others, but rather as an invitation for inner growth. Rev Karla answers the question of how to get your faith back. You can read more on this topic from Rev Karla on her blog at revkarla.com. The "clobber verses" mentioned in this episode are most often used to judge the LGBTQ humans. Remember those have been taken out of historical context and mistranslated -- and the word "homosexual" never even appeared in the Bible until 1946. Genesis 19:4–25 (the story of Sodom and Gomorrah)Leviticus 18:22 (“You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female.”)Leviticus 20:13 (“If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act.”)Romans 1:26–27 (“The men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts.”)1 Corinthians 6:9–11 (“Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.”)1 Timothy 1:9–10 (“Law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching.”) Books recommended in this episode include Falling into Grace and Resurrecting Jesus both by Adyashanti.Other resources for this episode include:One problem with Kim Burrell's 'hate the sin, love the sinner' argumentHate the Sin and Love the SinnerThe Bible: So Misunderstood It's a SinHomosexuality: Not a Sin, Not a Sickness Part IIDoes the Bible NOT oppose HomosexualityMy quest to find the word 'homosexual' in the Bible

Yes! Vaquero Guapo is back! You are in. Fringe 7. What happens when we get it wrong? Thanks for joining the Fringe this week. What happens when we get it wrong? A lot! It's why many of you have stayed away from church. A church becomes more about jumping through hoops or protecting the abuser vs. the abused. It can go sideways fast. That's why I firmly believe in the separation of church and state, and that's coming from a Jesus believer. For your favorite Fringer that you know has been pushed away or ran away from church, would you share this podcast with them? Break it down. Talk about the Good, Bad and Ugly. When and if you decide to go back to church, my rule of thumb is simple. One, the church has to be more about Jesus and loving others vs. loving themselves. Do they work with the entire Bible? Not just bits and pieces that fit their agenda of hate or oppression or justification. Are they more about loving others than money for themselves? There's a Christian church out there for you. When things lift, I encourage you to give it another go. If you do have a church that you love and gets above right? Let us know and we'll plug it and let that community know it is Fringe friendly. Hit us up at FriDudes.com and send us a message on the 'Contact Us' page.Ending on a song note, you know what I love about the Fringe? I don't feel the pressure to end on a perfect song. Often, we get to end on an edgy song. Now, this song isn't Vaquero endorsed. We'll see what he has to say about in Fringe 8. Confession, I really like Metallica. Shhhhhh. Don't tell anybody. What happens when we get it wrong? Master of Puppets comes to mind. Hey, I'm not just picking on certain churches here either. Think of North Korea or China or Russia. You don't talk like us. You don't believe like us. You are out. Listener. You are smart. You've been sticking with us because I'm certain you are not afraid to question. What is Truth? Does the Truth set you free? Who really wants Truth and who really just wants to control? You are most likely book smart. You may be street smart. Are you spiritually smart? Or are you just a puppet? This is Master of Puppets by Metallica, if you dig, give them some love and add it to your very eclectic/independent minded music mix...
If the kingdom of God is a culture of worship, and we go to church on Sunday and worship, we need to develop a culture of worship in our own lives personally. If Sunday is the only time you worship, then you're out of step with the kingdom of God in your life. Show Notes For This Foundational Podcast: 3 Ways Worship Defeats the Enemy 1. Worship Drives Out Evil Spirits 1 Samuel 18:10-12 David would play and sing and worship God before King Saul, and while he worshiped God the demonic spirits that were harassing the king would leave. Could it be that in your home personally, the reason why there is so much harassment going on is because you don't have enough praise and worship going on in your home. If you would develop that in your family, you would drive those tormenting spirits out the door! 2. Worship Sets the Captives Free Acts 16:24-26 There will be times that the enemy will come against you Try to imprison you Try to oppress you Suppress your emotions Suppress your thinking so that you are confused and in a fog The way to break out of it is to develop a personal culture of praise and worship Break your chains Release you from the enemy's bondage 3. Worship Breaks Strongholds Joshua 6 2 Chronicles 20:1-24 The enemy is developing a strategy right now to destroy you and your family You are never at the mercy of your enemy If you will develop a personal culture in your life, as you worship God will give you a strategy to defeat the enemy every time. God has given us a promise When the enemy comes against you one way, he will flee before you seven ways. God wants us to take our personal culture of worship and learn how to express it through our love language Set aside 5-10 minutes each day to worship Just worship Not to read the Bible Not to ask God for anything Use some worship music and sing with it Practice using the 9 Hebrew Words for Worship More Articles Like This: 9 Hebrew Words for Worship 5 Things the Church Must Do to See the Fire of God 4 Things the Church Must Do to Refocus Worship Two Mistakes Being Made in Worship Today Which Jesus Do You Worship Three Ways to Know if Worship Music is Biblical If you enjoyed this podcast, please consider leaving us a review. The policies of King Solomon's idiot son Rehoboam split the united kingdom in two: Israel and Judah. The fracture was permanent. I introduce the Biblical sources we have for this period, Kings and Chronicles and a few prophets; and the Assyrian and Babylonian records. I also introduce the archaeological evidence we have (such as the Moabite stone, the black obelisk of Shalmaneser III, and the Tel Dan stele), and the very difficult chronological problems. What would we know about the Hebrew kingdoms without the Bible? Not much.
