Our Summer 2025 series, Beside Still Waters, focuses on the places where creativity brings life into a world fatigued by brokenness and division. From jazz to Jane Austen and in between, this season we'll focus on the ways literature and the arts can refresh and challenge our inner lives—and connect us with the Creator of the good, the true, and the beautiful.Guided by theologian and musician David Bailey and concert pianist and chamber musician Mia Chung, this episode explores the concept that music involves mutual support, balance, and give and take among musicians to create a cohesive experience. And we reflect on how Christian communities can apply these principles of collaboration and harmony to create faith communities that are transformative:To the extent that the arts can actually cultivate that practice of incorporating the right hemisphere and in communication with the left, it's always together, you know, they're, complimentary. I think we can benefit each other in terms of community formation, but even benefit our own intellectual lives and the amount of joy we experience living in this world. - Mia Chung If this work resonates with you, please consider joining the Trinity Forum community as a society member. This podcast is an edited version of our Online Conversation recorded in June, 2024. Jackie and Preston are joined on the podcast by Gospel music legend Erica Campbell for a conversation on Christian genres and the role of music in our walks as Christ followers. They discuss how race and different cultural experiences factor into the music played in our churches, and how the social media algorithm influences our perception of Christian music too. Is one genre more theologically sound than another? Why is it important for us to not cut ourselves off from how we could experience God in a genre we're not used to? And how can songwriters resist division, keep Jesus at the center, and seek to write music that will actually disciple people? Shine!LDS AND MEDIUM PODCAST BACKGROUND:I was born into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or LDS for short. All my life I felt awkward and out of place, not because of my religion, but because of my spiritual gifts. It was hard to combine the idea of what first seemed like two separate worlds. So my whole life I have tried. I have learnt more about my gifts, and stayed faithful to my faith. But then I heard people left the church because it seems impossible to combine the two. So I am here, to try and mend the rift. To show that it is possible to be both LDS and to have, and use, our spiritual gifts. I am not alone on this journey, but my sister, who just is waking up to her spiritual gifts is by my side and she will also share her story.Jesus Christ, our older brother, was a healer. He asked us to love one another. So let´s follow in his footsteps. Please join me on this journey, let´s make a community of strong spiritual LDS, or whatever religion you belong to, and all work together to make this world a better place. If you like what I do, then you can find me here:https://linktr.ee/ldsandmediumIf you have words of support or stories that you anonymously want me to share please write me at ldsandmedium@gmail.com. Flute 360 | Episode 332: "Is It the Universe…or God? Rethinking the Creative Process as a Flutist" In this solo episode, Dr. Heidi Kay Begay invites you into a vulnerable, soulful conversation about creativity, faith, and what it truly means to be a modern-day artist. Inspired by the Flute 360 Accelerator's June book club selection, The Creative Act by Rick Rubin, Heidi reflects on how the book reshaped her understanding of artistry — and how viewing “the Source” through a faith-based lens revealed a deeper truth: that we are co-creators with God. This is not just a book review. It's a gentle nudge for any flutist who's been questioning their identity, comparing their path to others, or wondering whether their art still matters in a season of change or healing. Whether you're playing, podcasting, composing, writing, or resting — this episode will remind you that your creativity is still valid. Still sacred. And still very much needed. Main Points: Why redefining “the Source” as God can ground and deepen your creative process The lie that says “If I'm not performing, I'm not creating” — and how to rewrite that story What it means to be a flutist in a season of injury, recovery, or transformation How to release comparison and show up in your own artistic lane with joy and freedom Why your artistry counts — even if it looks different than it used to How the Flute 360 Accelerator creates a space for flutists to reflect, grow, and connect Resources: Book: The Creative Act by Rick Rubin Join the Flute 360 Accelerator Program: Click Here to Enroll – Tier 1, 2, or 3 Subscribe + Review: If you loved this conversation, please subscribe and leave a review. (Editor's Note: Welcome to our Reissue series! For the past several weeks, Basic Folk has been digging back into the archives and reposting some of our favorite episodes alongside new introductions commenting on what it's like to listen back. Enjoy! This episode featuring Lizzie No interviewing Joy Oladokun, was originally posted on February 24, 2022.)Arizona-born Joy Oladokun grew up listening to her dad's extensive record collection and falling in love with the wide and wondrous world of rock and roll. You can hear these diverse sonic influences, from Genesis to Tracy Chapman, in Joy's rootsy, contemporary, and pop-savvy 2021 album, 'in defense of my own happiness.' Of particular note are her superpowers for melody and smart repetition, which have made her a force to be reckoned with ever since she made the leap from LA to Nashville to make a life as a musician.Joy is not only a phenomenal songwriter, but she's also fearless and hilarious on social media. Believe it or not, it was Twitter that brought us together and catalyzed this Basic Folk interview. It was fascinating to hear her talk about how she uses her platform as a rising star in indie pop and folk to create the kind of world she wants to see. She's using emotional transparency as a tool for political change; she is healing in public and gently nudging others to heal as well. Her single, “keeping the light on,'' is the perfect distillation of her radical softness.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? What do you do when the lyrics of a song are gospel-centered and theologically accurate, but you believe the church that created the song might not necessarily be either of those things? In this episode, we discuss questions like, "Can we as Christians listen to music from churches who we believe might not have sound theology?""Should we listen to music written by someone who was at one time a Christian but has fallen away?""What is our response as the local church body in addressing issues of conscience?" Who decides what worship songs we sing in church? It turns out, worship music is a massive industry, and the way songs make it from a Nashville songwriting room to a Sunday morning service might surprise you. In this episode, Marc Jolicoeur joins The Biblical Mind Podcast to break down the business of contemporary worship music (CWM). He explains how four major megachurches dominate the industry, why most modern worship songs are written by teams of professionals rather than individual artists, and how CCLI licensing and copyright structures shape what gets sung in churches. But is this market-driven approach shaping worship in unhealthy ways? Dru and Marc discuss whether the emotional tone of worship music has shifted, why lament and imprecatory psalms are almost absent from today's songs, and whether churches should return to singing scripture itself. Is the worship music we sing today more about marketing than theology? And what would happen if the Psalms were reintroduced into Sunday services? We are listener supported.
