Original Airdate: July 30, 2018 Enjoy this episode, specially selected for our Super Soul Summer—a series celebrating some of the greatest Super Soul moments and messages to inspire and uplift your spirit. Spiritual thinker, teacher and author Adyashanti explores the meaning of grace and how it shows up when and where we least expect it. Adyashanti offers practical insights into how and why the thoughts in our heads must not be mistaken for our true identities. He explains why all negative energy is looking for resolution and reveals a surprising way to let go of painful emotions and unlock true happiness. Adyashanti also discusses his books “Falling into Grace: Insights on the End of Suffering” and “Resurrecting Jesus: Embodying the Spirit of a Revolutionary Mystic.”
As part of an ongoing series, this meditation inspired by Adyashanti invites you to relax and let go of ideas, assumptions, agendas, and self-orientation---to be what Christ called, "poor in spirit." This relinquishment allows you to enter the dark core of your being that is always and forever in direct contact with the mysterious, unknown dimension of Being. In this way, you become the space through which Eternity gazes into the world of time. Your eyes are the eyes of Eternity. The first of eight beatitudes taught by Jesus at the Sermon on the Mount, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" implies that through the surrender of self-preoccupation, we experience heaven in real time, here and now. Heaven is not "out there." Adyashanti echoes Christ's message: "The kingdom of God is within you."Theses practices build on each other, so you can listen consecutively, but if there is one in particular that speaks to you, feel free to stick with it. Based on the teachings of Adyashanti, they can be used alone or as a companion to his audio series, The 30-Day Wake Up Challenge, or his book, The Direct Way: 30 Practices to Evoke Awakening. This meditation correlates to Day 17. In some cases, the meditations are also loosely inspired by the teachings of Andrew Holecek, Pema Chodron, and Eckhart Tolle. A guide to connecting with your deepest ground―a rootedness that supports authentic psychological healing and embodied spirituality“This beautiful and deeply insightful work invites us to reconnect with our true ground―a place of inner stability and peace that lies beyond fear.” ―Tara Brach, author of Radical AcceptanceIn John J. Prendergast's decades of experience as a psychotherapist and spiritual teacher, the area of the body that's most difficult for people to connect with, given our survival fear and trauma, is our physical and energetic ground. This area in the lower belly and at the base of the spine corresponds with the root chakra in the Indian subtle body tradition, the lower dan tien in Taoism, and the hara in Japanese martial arts. While most spiritual traditions focus on opening the mind and the heart, they tend to avoid or undervalue the opening of the ground. Prendergast notes, “It remains largely unconscious and deeply defended.”This guide invites you to take a deep dive into your personal, archetypal, and universal ground, and to see through the false ground of your early conditioning and limited identity. Throughout Your Deepest Ground, Prendergast shares:• Profound yet accessible teachings to help you connect with your ground• Sensitive awareness to the trauma we're often holding in this part of our physical and energetic body• Sensing and inquiry practices to work with your own body and life• Authentic anecdotes and conversations drawn from his teaching that show the power of this work in actionBy consciously opening to our ground, we can experience a felt sense of inner safety and stability that supports the full flowering of inner peace, freedom, and loving awareness―a truly embodied spirituality. Ep. 179 (Part 1 of 2) | In this podcast, John Prendergast, spiritual teacher, depth psychotherapist (retired), and prolific author, eloquently lays out the territory we encounter on the spiritual path as we move towards opening to our deepest ground. John defines deepest ground as “ungraspable and unfathomable, something we can know intimately as a quality of awareness, unbounded and open.” “When we touch into this,” he continues, “we move from a place of love, peace and groundedness.” In working with students and clients over four decades, John says the presence or absence of ground has been the most important theme. John has a gift for communicating exactly what is most useful for a spiritual practitioner to hear: taking an integral and nondual approach different from traditional psychotherapy, he invites us to evoke presence—welcome the experience, welcome the fear of annihilation—let go of ordinary knowledge and allow a translucent, transformative space to emerge around ordinary mind. Blending archetypal wisdom and guidance with spacious emptiness, John explains that opening to unbounded awareness supports the process of individuation and actualization; he also weaves in an intriguing version of the hero's journey, where the hero emerges from the underground, not as a figure of accomplishment and victory, but as a simple, humble being, void of ego. The rich wisdom and gentle guidance offered here is invaluable, worthy of listening to many a time. Recorded November 7, 2024.“Transcendence is a beautiful first step… but there's a very important process of embodying awareness more and more deeply, in the physical body, in the subtle body.”Topics & Time Stamps – Part 1Introducing John Prendergast, Ph.D., retired psychotherapist, spiritual teacher, and author, whose most recent book is Your Deepest Ground (00:57)What is our deepest ground? (01:55)What is the difference between presence and ground? (04:29)The fear of losing control, of annihilation, that comes up in the process of healing and awakening (06:47)Using the myth of the underground descent, but emerging not as a hero, but simple and humble—devoid of egoic will (09:29)A translucency of the body/mind emerges: a core illumination (13:18)Meditation, self-inquiry, and time with authentic teachers are what have brought John to luminosity (15:09)The connection to one's teacher: for John, this was Jean Klein and Adyashanti (16:25)Back to returning to the world—not as a hero, but where there's no sense of accomplishment and hierarchy disappears (17:55)The tyranny of the enlightenment drive (20:42)Willfulness gradually transforms into willingness (24:07)Individual guidance can come as the small, still voice but also in kinesthetic form (25:25)Are there specific practices that facilitate opening to our deepest ground? (27:24)Evoking presence: John leads an invitation to welcome the experience, welcome the fear of annihilation (29:14)The difference between John's work and traditional psychotherapy (31:31)Beyond welcoming, John teaches a self-inquiry practice that asks, “Do I really want to know what is true?” (36:15) Working not just on personal limiting beliefs but existential limiting beliefs—e.g., “I am a separate self” (39:19)Recognizing the limitation of rational thought, a transformative space emerges around ordinary mind...
This is part of a series of short awakening practices that I will be posting over the next few weeks. They can be used in the morning, at bedtime, or on the spot in the course of your day. They build on each other, so you can listen consecutively, but if there is one in particular that speaks to you, feel free to stick with it. Loosely based on the teachings of Adyashanti, they can be used alone or as a companion to his audio series, The 30-Day Wake Up Challenge, or his book, The Direct Way: 30 Practices to Evoke Awakening. In some cases, the meditations are also loosely inspired by the teachings of Andrew Holecek and Pema Chodron. Trigger warning:In honor of Joshua's life, Nicholas Fontana agreed to film with PBTR a few years ago to share his experience of losing his adopted friend Joshua to suicide. I ran into Nicholas at a mutual friends party a few weeks ago. Everything fell away as we began to speak about the effort to heal and all of the ways he has made progress. I asked Nicholas if he would be willing to be on the podcast to talk about the ideas he shared during our conversation. This led me to think about how to deal with our diverse levels of pain in a way that I have never considered before. His inspiration for self exploration came from; Gangaji, Alan Watts. Adyashanti, Eckhart Tolle and Terrence McKenna. It is important to understand that the people who love adopted people hurt when we hurt. Adoption is not a singular event that happens to one person. Adoption loss extends out from us; it affects our relationships, our parenting and our ability to feel worthy. In reintroducing you to Nicholas and Joshua we hope you feel inspired by the courage, friendship and the bond they shared. We honor Joshua and his brave battle, we honor all of the warriors we have lost. I'm so excited to share this transformative conversation on how to create everyday miracles in your life now! I had the privilege of sitting down with Hakim Hamza, bestselling author of The Eternal Within, for a deep dive into practical techniques, mindset shifts, and daily practices inspired by A Course in Miracles. Whether you're new to the Course or a seasoned student, this conversation will give you powerful tools to elevate your everyday experience and transform your reality. And help you experience more miracles! ⚡️ About Hakim Hamza: Hakim was born in 1987 to a Swedish mother and an Egyptian father, and grew up in Sweden. Growing up multiculturally fostered a deep awareness of the vastness of human experience. Hakim holds a bachelor's degree in social psychology. Driven by a profound yearning for something eternal that transcends limitations, I immersed myself in diverse Eastern philosophies. I have explored the teachings of Osho (Rajneesh), Papaji, Ramana Maharshi, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Acharya Prashant, and Adyashanti, among others. Through this journey, he understood how spiritual truths can be applied to everyday life. Even though not Eastern, he finally found "A Course in Miracles" (ACIM) and the work of Dr. Kenneth Wapnick, who taught it. The Course has resonated with him more than any other teaching; hence, it has become his primary spiritual practice.

In this episode I am joined by Dr James Cooke, Oxford-trained neuroscientist, spiritual teacher, and author of “Dawn of Mind: How Matter Became Conscious and Alive”. James recounts how, at aged 13, an existential crisis driven by fear of hell saw him emerge into a profound mystical opening. James shares the radical changes he experienced and traces his subsequent years spent exploring and integrating this spiritual breakthrough. James recalls his improbable journey to winning a place at Oxford University, discusses the remarkable overlaps he found there between cutting-edge neuroscience and his own awakening, and reveals the social structures of elite education in the UK. James details the arduous and often overlooked post-awakening work of surrendering egoic structures and releasing attachments, explains why enlightenment is both a gain and a loss, and reflects on the challenges of teaching nonduality as a natural mystic. … Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. 01:07 - Why did James write Dawn of Mind? 03:43 - Making consciousness science accessible 04:41 - Catholic upbringing, an overly conscientious child 05:49 - Disturbed by hell 06:38 - Existential rumination, a crisis of faith 08:27 - Spiritual awakening at age 13 09:54 - Aftermath of James' awakening 12:59 - Life affirming vs death affirming phases of awakening 15:16 - Letting go of attachments 17:24 - What happened to James' excessive conscientiousness? 20:00 - Two mistakes about the no-self 21:15 - Freedom from extremes, letting go 23:39 - The dissolving self 24:44 - Is therapy necessary? 26:44 - Meditation as a gradual path 27:15 - Meditation vs therapy 28:37 - Practice in life vs joining a monastery 30:11 - Can a natural mystic really teach others? 32:37 - Alienation through spiritual language 33:21 - Enlightenment as loss 34:27 - 3 types of spiritual teacher 36:30 - James' profile as a teacher 37:47 - Self-aggrandising nondual teachers 38:38 - Spiritual influences 40:40 - Adyashanti & the end of suffering 42:08 - Buddhist progress of insight model 43:59 - Volatile teenage years 44:57 - Extreme somatic tension 36:25 - Difficult integration phase 47:39 - Oxford University, dealing with pressure 50:26 - How James got into Oxford against all odds 54:07 - Social context of elite education in the UK 56:52 - The Oxford wound 58:11 - The mystic's mistake, post-awakening 01:00:15 - James' research path at Oxford 01:01:39 - Opening a path for others + psychedelic experimentation 01:04:13 - James' last psychedelic trip 01:05:12 - Working with Beliefs 01:07:29 - Unravelling resistance & faking it 01:10:40 - Is there an end to post-awakening work? 01:13:54 - James' experience of intimate relationships 01:17:25 - Charlatans and why awakening can be off-putting for friends 01:19:30 - Alienating terminology 01:19:48 - Feeling isolated after awakening 01:20:33 - Mimicking awakening, the nondual teaching circuit 01:22:05 - Why did James wait so long to go public 01:25:57 - Reaction of James' family 01:26:51 - Moral perfection 01:30:37 - Why James doesn't like the word “enlightenment” 01:31:10 - The problem with “awakening” 01:32:31 - Language phases, changing the lingo 01:33:20 - The Borg and analogies for awakening 01:34:42 - Siddhi, intuition, supernatural powers 01:36:48 - Insecure rockstars, kundalini 01:38:39 - The language game 01:39:11 - Hearing voices, the dramatising brain 01:40:58 - World as a shared hallucination 01:42:45 - Does James suffer? 01:44:56 - Gross vs subtle suffering 01:45:52 - An experience of physical pain 01:47:08 - Meditative austerities vs life practice 01:50:46 - Trainings in equanimity 01:51:49 - Ideas in Dawn of Mind 01:53:20 - An instinct for empowerment … To find our more about James Cooke PhD, visit: - https://www.drjamescooke.com/ - https://www.innerspaceinstitute.org/ … For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - https://www.guruviking.com Music ‘Deva Dasi' by Steve James

Born in Kenya, and of Indian ancestry, Riyaz came to North America when he was ten years old (growing up in Canada, and then moving to the United States as an adult). Each of these lands, peoples, and cultures has informed and shaped his expression and sensibilities. He is a product of both East and West. Most of his adult life has been devoted to the study and practice of both psychotherapy and spirituality. And both of these disciplines have been integral to a path of healing and awakening. Professionally, his life's work has been to bring together Eastern wisdom with Western science and psychology in a synergistic alliance. After 26 years of mainly practicing as a psychotherapist, and many years of teaching and supervising students and interns in a transpersonally oriented graduate school (CIIS in San Francisco), he has shifted his work in a more explicitly spiritual direction. He now leads individuals and groups in spiritual work through groups, and day-long and multi-day retreats. In April 2023, he received dharma transmission and the blessing of his teacher, Adyashanti. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit wisdomofcrowds.liveYou might have noticed that Wisdom of Crowds got a facelift this week. We touched up our homepage and added two new features: CrowdSource and Provocations (read more about both here). In this spirit of renewal and relaunch, on the podcast we are getting back to our bread and butter with a classic Shadi and Damir episode. This week's episode deals with the virtues of resignation. Is giving up ever the right choice to make, either in politics or in one's personal life? Shadi has been reading a book about “settling” — On Giving Up by Adam Phillips — and he muses on the topic in latest piece in Wisdom of Crowds: “Giving Up is Good for You.” Damir worries that giving up means resignation, a rejection of life, a denial of adventure. He considers Shadi's mention of the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Does Shadi understand the full implications of Nietzsche's philosophy? Damir wonders. In the bonus section for paid subscribers, the talk turns toward war and geopolitics, where Shadi discusses how wars end in" “settlements” — a form of giving up. Finally, the conversation wraps up with a reevaluation of Damir's personal philosophy, and a look back at last week's podcast episode with Phil Klay.Required Reading:* “Giving Up is Good for You” by Shadi (Wisdom of Crowds).* Adam Phillips, On Giving Up.* Friedrich Nietzsche (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy).* Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra.* Friedrich Nietzsche, On the Genealogy of Morals.* Friedrich Nietzsche, The Joyful Science.* Adyashanti official page (YouTube).* Podcast episode with Phil Klay (Wisdom of Crowds). Hello Friends on the path…I've known about the struggles of some of my favorite philosophers…Krishnamurti suffered from terrible migraines. Ram Dass had a massive stroke. Yogananda had crippling pain from apparently taking on the karma of his devotees. Anyone in a physical body suffers. Facts. But the accounts I found most helpful were those of teachers who struggled with anxiety and panic. Teachers of mind mastery who had to face these kinds of inner hurdles struck me deeply. Two of whom helped me relax into deep self compassion: Adyashanti and Mingyur Rinpoche, and I've found a way to loop their teaching back to one of Audrey Lourdes' pillars:“Nothing I accept about myself can be used against me to diminish me.”I'm sharing their enlightening humanness in today's WITH LOVE, DANIELLE (Eps 104) as part of my 4 part series on Healing With Anxiety. It reminds me of the very simple Buddhist prayer, “May my suffering be of service.” Please tune in and… give yourself a break.Your fellow aspiring human…With Love,DanielleMENTIONED IN EPISODE 104:In Love With The World by Mingyur RinpocheAdyashantiThe Nourish System: reduce stress + restore your nervous systemThe Heart Centered Mastermind: Support for your business + career-ing. When that body slouches, it's like it's slouching into forgetfulness. It's slouching into worry. It's slouching into overthinking. Sit back up straight, like you're on your Throne, and be Greatness. In this posture, that body is like an antenna, receiving, remembering Greatness, remembering its Divine Essence, remembering Truth. Remembering that everything it encounters is also Greatness, is one with Greatness. That there is nothing but Greatness. I Love you, Nik Nikki@curlynikki.com ******God is afoot! Original Air Date: April 7, 2021Your life is always speaking to you in whispers, guiding you to your next right step. In many situations, the whisper is also the first warning. It's a quiet nudge from deep within saying, Hmmm, something feels off. A small voice that tells you, “This is no longer your place of belonging.” It's the pit in your stomach, or the pause before you speak. It's the shiver, the goosebumps that raise the hairs on the back of your neck. Whatever form the whisper takes, it's not a coincidence. Your life is trying to tell you something. Heeding these signs can open the doors to your personal evolution, pushing you toward your life's purpose. Ignoring them or sleepwalking through your life, is an invitation to chaos. In this Super Soul podcast, Oprah sits down with such gifted writers and thought leaders as Dani Shapiro, Caroline Myss, Adyashanti, Shauna Niequist, Jon Kabat Zinn, Cheryl Strayed, Pema Chödrön, Amy Purdy, John Lewis, Wes Moore, Kerry Washington and Thomas Moore. In today's episode, Brandon decides to jump into his time machine and shares an episode from 2016. In it, Brandon and Dalien discuss a quote and audio clip from Adyashanti that talks about enlightenment as our natural, unaltered state of perception and being, once we dissolve the ego. Also, Dalien shares a story about a fairly advanced but little-known ancient civilization from South America. Care to play a game with the youniverse? You never know how and when you will be filled with abundance and you will start raining quenching the thirst of many. You never know how and when you will be full of fruits and shade and travelers will take shelter and food from you, You never know how and when you will be full with Love and Light and you will start spreading the fragrance of beauty to everyone. You never know how and when the death will come and make you deathless and life will start flowing out of you you never know how & when...really." -Sri Sri Ravi Shankar "Keep going. You never know what's right around the corner." -@SisterCody via IG "I want to speak to the hidden people for a moment...I don't find it coincidental that many of God's servants were found in the most unconventional & ambiguous places. They weren't found in Synagogues, or popular gather places but fields, deserts, at home, mangers, or at work. The settings we find them I'm sure are strategic in that they develop certain skills, and traits that would translate to their callings but also I can't help but think because it was one of the last places men would look for where a move of God would come from next. He often tucked them away, but in plain sight but hidden. Where everyone could see, but could not yet SEE. What a mystery of the Gospel. If you feel hidden, do not despise your present status. If you are busy wondering when God is going to do the things you've heard & envisioned -be patient. The time is coming sooner than you thought. And you'll look back at this 'hidden' time of consecration & private development with longing. When God 'reveals' you, He wants to make sure you have the capacity in character, to remain where He calls. It's not your gifts that will sustain you, but your character. That's what's being carefully curated, carefully molded, privately developed, and carefully grown. Do not despise this time. The hidden time is protection. This time + the lessons are invaluable, and it will be the key to being able to remain & go higher. "For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light." - Mark 4:22 - @prophetess.maggie via IG "Waiting is just a gift of time in disguise - a time to pray wrapped up in a ribbon of patience - because is the Lord ever late? -Ann Voskamp via IG @worshipblog "Don't try to stop thinking, let it happen. Just recognize that which is not thinking." -Adyashanti
