Big Bill was an Irish American bootlegger from New York who turned a small operation into a multi million dollar empire. At the height of his success, he had a smuggling operation that ran from Europe directly to Manhattan. Bill took his earnings from bootlegging and bought several sports teams including two NHL franchises an NFL team and even two horse racing tracks. He also was a part of the Combine Big Four which was four of the biggest Irish bootleggers which included future President JFK's father Joseph Kennedy. Hear about all that and more right now! Bill Dwyer is running for Van City Council for Place 4 Here is links to Bill's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100078606619001 Below is Bill's Introduction: My name is Bill Dwyer and I am running for Van City Council Place 4. I know a lot of you don't know who I am, so let me introduce myself. My wife Trish and I have been residents of Van for 14 years and part of the Van ISD Community for 20 plus years. We raised our 4 kids here and enjoy our grandchildren's visits. Before moving to Van proper, I lived in Ben Wheeler for a decade, volunteering on the Ben Wheeler Fire Department and serving as the training captain and serving the community. Being elected to the Van City Council will allow me to continue my dedication and service to our community. I am not a politician, just a concerned citizen and tax payer that wants to represent and serve our city, to keep Van the best city to live and raise a family. The city of Van is here to serve you, not the other way around. Too often, the objections of the community are not heard, often put aside for special interests and pet projects. I want to ensure that every citizen is heard, that every complaint is handled efficiently, with respect and courteously. I will not accept any donations, funding my campaign myself, keeping me accountable to only you, the citizens of Van. As a project manager for a multimillion dollar industrial and architectural company, working on projects for such clients as Lewisville ISD, Frito Lay and Medical City of Dallas, as well as being a small business owner, I bring real world experience and a unique skill set to the city Council. Now being retired, provides me the luxury of giving the city council and the city of my full dedication and attention. Our infrastructure has long needed repairs and upgrades. We have new homes being built with an infrastructure that can barely support the current residents. I plan to work with our city and county to set and obtain upgrade goals to bring our city's roads and water up to residents' standards. Van has one neighborhood watch program which I was lucky enough to be included in. I want to work with the current watch captain and Van PD to implement neighborhood watches in all the neighborhoods in van. To build on and strengthen our neighbor looking out for neighbor community we have always counted on. I also plan to work to make and keep the actions and decisions of the city council as transparent and professional as possible. I believe that our elected officials are responsible for much more than the business workings of our city. They are representatives of our city and our values, leaders in the community. We should be setting a fine example for our residents, and those outside looking in, not to mention our younger generation, who will be the future leaders of our city. I would be honored to earn your vote. Together we can and will keep Van the best city to live and raise a family. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/clydehays/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/clydehays/support

When anyone brings up the topic of pro hockey in Philadelphia, the conversation quite naturally starts (and often stops) with the Flyers - one of the six franchises added to the NHL in the league's 1967 "Great Expansion," and the fastest of the bunch to capture the Lord Stanley's Cup, after only its seventh season. But as this week's guest Alan Bass ("Professional Hockey in Philadelphia: A History") suggests, limiting the discussion to just the Flyers not only ignores the surprisingly long history of the game in the "City of Brotherly Love" prior to their arrival, but also neglects the club's lasting impact more broadly on Philly's sports scene ever since. For example, few fans know that the Flyers were actually not the first NHL franchise in Philadelphia. That "honor" instead went to the 1930-31 debacle known as the Quakers - a hastily relocated cellar-dwelling team from Pittsburgh (the Pirates), owned by a Depression-era bootlegger (Bill Dwyer), fronted by a temporarily retired lightweight boxing champion (Benny Leonard), and producer of one of the worst seasons in the league's 103-year history (4-36-4 record; .136 winning percentage). Or that the city nearly got its second shot at the NHL in 1946-47, when franchise rights holders of the dormant Montreal Maroons couldn't secure funding for a new arena on the site of the old Baker Bowl. Or even that for decades before the Flyers' arrival, Philadelphia was a reliable home to a wide range of colorful minor league franchises with names like Arrows, Comets, Ramblers, Rockets and Falcons - and even after (Firebirds, Phantoms). And we won't even mention the World Hockey Association's home ice-challenged flirtations with the market - the inaugural 1972-73 season's Philadelphia Blazers (Civic Center/Convention Hall) and 1973-74's mid-season relocated New York Golden Blades-to-Jersey Knights (suburban Cherry Hill [NJ] Arena)!

Formed in Boston in 2010. Bill had been primarily playing drums in his friends' bands for years since his art school days (School of The Museum of Fine Art, Boston) but decided to start something brand new after writing a bunch of songs, learning to play the guitar and finding his voice. He decided to perform as a solo act for a year at first to gauge the response to his material. After repeated warm and positive responses to his solo shows he kept hearing from people that he should "get a band together". So the decision was made. Bill Dwyer Band has been fortunate to have included many amazing people and musicians in it's ranks through the last several years.Current members include Cullen Corley (Drums), Charles Murphy (Bass), Joe Diaz (fill-in Bass) and Attis Jerrell Clopton (fill-in Drums).
