This week on The Tracklist, Daron and Chris are strapping in for the loudest, most ridiculous, and somehow most earnest rock soundtrack ever committed to film: This Is Spinal Tap (1984).Rob Reiner's mockumentary masterpiece didn't just parody '80s heavy metal — it became it. The music in this film is the joke AND the heart, and that's a genuinely hard thing to pull off. From Big Bottom to Hell Hole to the haunting, Stonehenge-adjacent opus Stonehenge, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer wrote and performed every track themselves — and somehow made songs that are both hysterically bad and undeniably catchy. We're breaking down the score, the songs, the performances, and asking the real question: Is this a Cult Classic?Follow us on Instagram: @thedaronjenkins | @chrissaunders_music | @tracklistshowRep the show and grab some Tracklist merch at tracklist-shop.fourthwall.comIf you enjoy the episode, leave us a rating, subscribe, and follow the show wherever you listen — it means the world and helps more people find us!
Liftoff finally went public this week — at a valuation that tells you exactly what the public market thinks mobile ad networks are worth. That's just one of four stories this week that genuinely matter if you run UA.Matej Lančarič flies solo for the breaking news segment, ranked from biggest to most practical. Liftoff listed on Nasdaq as LFT after a second attempt, raising $437M at a $3.83B valuation — a 25% haircut from the $5B it wanted in January, and below the private valuation General Atlantic paid in 2025. A Niko Partners report buried a number most Western publishers still aren't modeling: minigames are now almost 20% of mobile game spending in China. Akin launched AMF Capital with Makers Fund, opening with a $28M UA financing facility for Birhack. And the throughline of the week — mobile has officially shifted from core-first to event-first, with Monopoly Go's Simpsons crossover, Rovio's own admission, and Supercell's MoCo reboot all pointing the same direction. The bar keeps moving up. What happens when you finally get to mix Spinal Tap in Dubly Atmos? You turn it up to 11, of course! My guest today is Grammy-nominated engineer and mixer Steve Genewick, joining us from his Atmos room in Los Angeles to walk us through the wild, hilarious, and surprisingly heartfelt process of capturing and mixing the new "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues" soundtrack and album. In this episode, Steve talks about working directly with Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer; recording their live vocals; tracking the band as a real rock group; and assembling a full dubly Atmos experience that honors the original film while pushing the new one into immersive territory. We dig into the whole workflow - from the Beyerdynamic M500 ribbon mics he labeled as Nigel, David, and Derek… to tracking full songs live at The Village… to mixing the concert sequences for the film… to remixing "Break Like the Wind" in Atmos using the original 1990s analog tapes that had to be transferred from tape box track sheets. Steve also talks about Spinal Tap's actual backstory, the improvised nature of the films, working directly with Rob Reiner, and why the guys are not in character in the studio - except when it's time to sound "more Nigel."We also go deep into Atmos and orchestral recording, Steve's work on classic jazz records (Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard), his remixing of the "Jaws" and "Jaws 2" soundtracks, and how immersive music translates between speakers, earbuds, and soundbars. Steve explains LFE strategy, subwoofer layouts, mixing bass into objects, and why a great Atmos mix is not about flying things around the room — it's about clarity, space, and emotional impact. And yes, we do talk about Stonehenge… the pizza pedal… the cheese guitar… and whether mixing break like the wind is allowed in the control room.Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.comTHANKS TO OUR SPONSORS!http://UltimateMixingMasterclass.comhttps://usa.sae.edu/ The next program starts May 11, 2026 https://www.izotope.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off!https://www.native-instruments.com Use code ROCK30 to get 1 month free of NI 360!https://www.spectra1964.comhttps://gracedesign.com/https://pickrmusic.com https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academyhttps://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/Listen to the podcast theme song “Skadoosh!” https://solo.to/lijshawmusicListen to this guest's discography on Apple Music:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/steve-genewick-atmos-mixes/pl.u-76oNkrMF1JKbpIf you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/ReviewCLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/556
Acclaimed vocalist and songwriter Judith Owen returns with her captivating new album, Suit Yourself, released today, April 24th, 2026 via Twanky Records.Recorded at Esplanade Studios in New Orleans, Suit Yourself showcases Owen's continued evolution into jazz, blues, and big band, blending the vibrant energy of her previous releases with her signature storytelling and rich musical arrangements. Our feature track today, “To Your Door” stands out as a heartfelt and playful original, inspired by the spirit of Django Reinhardt, while offering a refreshing twist on the classic “musician on the road” narrative.Written and produced by Owen, the track serves as a personal love letter to her husband, actor and comedian Harry Shearer. Flipping the traditional perspective, Owen delivers a confident and empowering message from a woman's point of view:“The more you give me the freedom, the more I want to come home,” she explains, highlighting themes of trust, independence, and enduring love.Adding an international flair, the release also features a French-language version, “TE CHERCHER (To Your Door French Touch Version),” with text adapted by Yasmine Mohammedi-Kyd.Today we chat all things Judith and take a deep dive into the new album. Veteran comedy writer Tom Leopold started out as an actor, working with James Mason, Robert Preston and Ted Knight before creating comedy material for legends Steve Allen, Bob Hope and Mary Tyler Moore and writing hit series like “Cheers” and “Seinfeld” (scripting the memorable “Babu” episode, among others). Tom sat down with Gilbert and Frank to talk about early acting roles on “Gunsmoke” and “Mannix,” his days on the “National Lampoon Radio Hour” with Christopher Guest and Bill Murray and his years-long friendships with pals Paul Shaffer, Richard Belzer and Harry Shearer. EDtv opened in third place on March 26th right behind our last movie, Analyze This in 2nd and Forces of Nature in 1st, going on to gross $35 million worldwide on a budget of $80 million. Directed by Ron Howard, it is a remake of the 1994 Quebecois film Louis 19, King of the Airwaves, with a script adapted by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, it stars Matthew McConaughey, Jenna Elfman, Woody Harrelson, Ellen DeGeneres, Sally Kirkland, a frankly Oscar-worthy Martin Landau, Rob Reiner, Dennis Hopper, Elizabeth Hurley, Harry Shearer, Ian Gomez, Rupaul, Michael Moore, Jay Leno, George Plimpton, and Bill Maher. EDtv tells the story of a regular guy whose life becomes a 24-hour reality show. It did modestly well with critics, but it was drowned out by 1998's similarly-premised (but in no way similar) The Truman Show. Anyway, since it's the only 1999 movie to feature Bill Maher, we invited the host of the I Hate Bill Maher Podcast, comedian Will Weldon, to talk about this incredibly confused, frustrating movie, which remains notable for being the start of the McConaughey-Harrelson (possibly literal) Bromance! The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL
Well, we made it! Season Five of Saturday Night Live has come to an end.Brad and Gary look back and discuss what they liked (and didn't), what they learned, and what surprised them from the final season of SNL's original era. They pick their favorite hosts and musical guests, rank the best (and worst) episodes, and – of course – pick their Best Bits of the season. In addition, they highlight forgotten and underrated moments from the season as well as try to agree on who it was that picked up the mantle in the absence of John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. They look back at quality contributions from Harry Shearer as well as lament the too-often absence of Garrett and Laraine (and sometimes Gilda). And, after all is said and done, they try to decide if this season really is as bad as history would have you believe. The final season of “The Early Years of SNL” has come to a close. Welcome to PTBN Pop's Movie Review of The Day! Every weekday we will be reviewing a movie whether it be currently in theaters, featured on streaming or just a film that we hold near and dear to us. Since we are in the midst of this year's NFL playoffs, this week we are covering football movies. On today's episode, Andy Atherton is reviewing “Little Giants” from 1994 starring Rick Moranis, Ed O'Neill, Shawna Waldron, Devon Sawa & Harry Shearer.
We're carrying on our tribute to Rob Reiner this month with the one of the first (and certainly funniest) rockumentaries of all time: This is Spinal Tap, starring Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer as Britain's loudest and most punctual rock band. This is Spinal Tap was also Reiner's first feature film as a director. Next week, we'll be chatting Stephen King and Stand By Me!
In this episode, we kick off the 2027 Speak Film and Enter season with an all-time classic comedy from director Rob Reiner, "This is Spinal Tap", starring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer! Listen now!
Rick, Joe, and Kyle review the 1984 mockumentary comedy film, "This Is Spinal Tap." Directed and written by Rob Reiner. Also written by Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer. With music by Guest, McKean, Shearer, and Reiner. The film stars the trio, Rob Reiner, June Chadwick, and Tony Hendra. We ranked the 10 songs from the soundtrack and picked our favorite lines, characters, performers, and scenes. Enjoy!
Happy New Year! Tune in as Guy Bradford (Jesters of Ravenloft: A D&D Podcast) hops back onto the podcast for this first episode of 2026 in order to break down The Truman Show, the 1998 psychological comedy-drama film about an insurance salesman who comes to realize he's been the unwitting star of a reality TV program that uses instruments like hidden cameras and paid actors to manufacture and broadcast his life 24/7. All the gaslighting that Truman endures, an old way of “de-aging” actors, the blatant capitalism of this TV program, and the gorgeous score's ability to adjust the tone of the movie comprise a few of the topics for this episode.Directed by Peter Weir, The Truman Show stars Jim Carrey, Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich, Natascha McElhone, Ed Harris, Holland Taylor, Paul Giamatti, Brian Delate, Harry Shearer, Peter Krause, and Heidi Schanz.Spoilers start at 26:50Create your podcast today! #madeonzencastrHere's how you can learn more about Palestine and IsraelHere's how you can keep up-to-date on this genocideHere's how you can send eSIM cards to Palestinians in order to help them stay connected onlineGood Word:• Guy: Bugonia• Arthur: 28 Days LaterReach out at email2centscritic@yahoo.com if you want to recommend things to watch and read, share anecdotes, or just say hello!Be sure to subscribe, rate, and review on iTunes or any of your preferred podcasting platforms!Follow Arthur on Twitter, Goodpods, StoryGraph, Letterboxd, and TikTok: @arthur_ant18Follow Arthur on Bluesky: @arthur-ant18Follow the podcast on Twitter: @two_centscriticFollow the podcast on Instagram: @twocentscriticpodFollow Arthur on GoodreadsCheck out 2 Cents Critic Linktree

On this episode of You Are What You Read, we are remembering the great Rob Reiner and his beautiful wife, Michele Singer Reiner. We had the honor of hosting Mr. Reiner on You Are What You Read in October with his memoir, A Fine Line Between Stupid and Clever: The Story of Spinal Tap, which he co-wrote with Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and David Kamp. Rob is a two-time Emmy–winning actor for his role in All in the Family. He is also the acclaimed director of This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, A Few Good Men, The American President, Ghosts of Mississippi, and The Bucket List. When Rob Reiner met Michele Singer on the set of When Harry Met Sally, he changed the ending of the film to the now-iconic conclusion… Michele Singer was a world-renowned photographer, producer and activist. Together, they spearheaded a tobacco tax initiative in California to fund early childhood development and chaired the state commission to oversee its implementation. In 2008, Michele and Rob cofounded The American Foundation For Equal Rights, which paved the way for marriage equality nationwide. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ben and Rob turn it up to eleven with ‘This Is Spinal Tap', Rob Reiner's 1984 mockumentary that permanently rewired comedy, metal, and how musicians see themselves. Starring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, This Is Spinal Tap follows England's loudest and least self aware heavy metal band as they tour America, argue about amps, lose drummers at an alarming rate and accidentally create one of the most influential films of all time. How did Rob Reiner and Christopher Guest invent an entirely new comedic language; why is metal as a genre uniquely perfect for satire; and how did This Is Spinal Tap go on to influence everything from The Office to modern mockumentary storytelling? How many real musicians see themselves uncomfortably reflected in this film; why do Ben and Rob have their own deeply Spinal Tap style music industry war stories; and what does This Is Spinal Tap really mean about ego, creativity and the absurdity of chasing greatness? CONSUUUME to find out all this and much, much more! Find us on your socials of choice at www.linktr.ee/everymovieeverpodcast
The holiday party at Conan O'Brien's house got dark. Rob Reiner's son, Nick, reportedly caused disturbances at the event, leading to a heated argument with his father. Later, Rob and his wife Michelle were tragically murdered, leaving Conan haunted by what he perceived as missed warning signs. Several Hollywood figures, including Bill Hader, expressed their sorrow and shock. Tributes from friends and collaborators, such as Billy Crystal and Harry Shearer, highlighted Reiner's legacy. Rob Schneider commented on presidential remarks about Reiner, advocating for less hostility. Reiner's final film release has been delayed as a mark of respect.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/daily-comedy-news-with-johnny-mac--4522158/support.Contact John at John@thesharkdeck dot com Thanks to our sponsors!Raycon EarbudsUnderdog Fantasy Promo Code DCNBlue Chew Promo Code DCNTalkspace promo code Space 80For Uninterrupted Listening, use the Apple Podcast App and click the banner that says Uninterrupted Listening. $4.99/month John's Substack about media is free.
The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL
SNL looks to pick up the pieces as it turns into the back half of Season 5 as old standby Elliott Gould returns to become the third host in show history to do it a fifth time (a feat that wouldn't be repeated for over six years). Gould clearly knows his way around the show, as evidenced by his “laissez-faire” approach to this episode, yet he isn't given much material to work with. It's not a good sign when the only bit the man notorious for always kicking off his Saturday Night Live appearances with a song and dance is reduced to simply eating a carrot stick for his monologue. He's forced to wait until he dresses up as a bear for an uncopyrighted Canadian retelling of “The Wizard of Oz” sketch to do both. But, the episode does kick off with a fun cold open that turns into a runner – something we have not seen for quite awhile – and Harry Shearer continues to shine when he's given the spotlight. And, the show continues to showcase new and interesting musical acts with Gary Numan as this week's musical guest.---------------------------------Subscribe today! They say “you can never go home again.” But maybe, what they meant was that you just simply shouldn't. Original Not Ready for Prime Time Player and first breakout star of SNL, Chevy Chase returns for his second time hosting and it does not take long for things to go off the rails. An obviously impaired Chevy is covered in flop sweat, has trouble reading his lines, and at times struggles with the English language. Not to be outdone, musical guest Marianne Faithfull arrives at Saturday Night Live equally impaired – if not more. She struggles through two performers off her comeback album, Broken English, and at times seems to be someplace else. These two combine for one of the greatest – and most infamous – trainwrecks in show history. And what would a trainwreck be without The SNL in Review's legendary Andy Hoglund on hand to help sort through it all? Andy joins us to defend the musical guest, give his sympathies to Harry Shearer, and debate the pros and cons of drug use.Make sure to listen all the way through to the end to hear a snippet of one of the tracks off Chevy's debut album. It is….AMAZING!---------------------------------Subscribe today! Over the course of his long and distinguished career, Rob Reiner has directed some of the most beloved and acclaimed films in Hollywood history. But he had never directed a sequel until ‘Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues.' In this episode, Reiner breaks down why he decided to reunite with Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer for one last mockumentary 41 years after they invented the genre with ‘This Is Spinal Tap.' He talks about how the comedy of the film has evolved now that they are in their 70s and 80s, and the secret to playing the straight man opposite someone as effortlessly funny as Guest. Reiner also gets into the state of America under Trump 2.0, how Elon Musk drove him away from Twitter, and what he learned about being a politically outspoken celebrity from Norman Lear and Jane Fonda. Finally, he reflects on his relationship with his late father Carl Reiner, recalls the first time he met Mel Brooks, and considers the enduring legacy of classic films like ‘The Princess Bride' and ‘When Harry Met Sally.'Follow Matt Wilstein on Bluesky @mattwilstein Follow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpodHighlights from this episode and others at The Daily Beast Hosted on Acast. We're here to provide a little distraction -- and a positive online community during these weird times -- with the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast. Our first movie isn't exactly escapist fun, though: "The Long Walk," which is one of the better Stephen King adaptations. It's beautifully written and acted but also harrowing to watch, especially now. This may not be the best week to see people getting shot in the head, but this movie is really good otherwise. In theaters. Next up, it's "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues," the painfully unfunny sequel to the 1984 comedy classic "This Is Spinal Tap." It would be impossible to match the brilliance of a movie that invented an entire genre, but this one really doesn't. Rob Reiner, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer are all back, along with some major celebrity cameos. In theaters. If you're looking for elegant pleasures, we have "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale." Everyone's lives are in flux in 1930s England, but they look great doing it. And despite their financial woes, they find time to get gussied up for the horse races at Ascot. This tidies up all the stories in satisfying fashion. In theaters. Finally, a lengthy Movie News LIVE!: Early reactions to "One Battle After Another," Emmy Awards on Sunday, "Big Little Lies" season 3 and much more. We tried to keep the politics to a minimum but dipped into some entertainment-adjacent items toward the end. Join us every Friday at Noon Pacific. Thanks for all you do for our community! Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/ Come hang out with us before a showing of "One Battle After Another"! We'll be at CinemaWest Beach Cities before the 6pm show on Friday, Sept. 26. Meet us in the lobby bar at 530pm before seeing the movie on their giant screen. Details and tickets here: https://web.cinemawest.com/films/One-Battle-After-Another/HO00000209 Come see Alonso and Dave at 29 Queer Film Festival in Twentynine Palms, CA! This Is Spinal Tap ushered in a new wave of genre films with its satirical, mockumentary style. It is hailed as a classic, having found its way into the U.S. Library of Congress' National Film Registry. And if that isn't proof enough, the Criterion Collection is releasing a director-approved 4k restoration of the film. Now, over forty years later, the band is back together for one last show. Spinal Tap II: The End Continues finds bandmates David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls (all reprised roles by Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer) reuniting on stage after much time apart. Along with documentarian Marty DiBergi, the band tries to recapture the magic that was in the original This Is Spinal Tap. Today on FilmWeek, Larry Mantle is joined by Rob Reiner, co-writer and director of both films to talk about the legacy of the original This Is Spinal Tap for both film and music, and the unique task of continuing that legacy four decades later. SPINAL TAP II: THE END CONTINUES is in Wide Release and available in IMAX theaters. A Director-Approved 4K UHD edition of THIS IS SPINAL TAP will be released from the The Criterion Collection on Tuesday, September 16. To celebrate the release of its sequel, we are going to discuss the legendary 1984 comedy film This is Spinal Tap. Directed by Rob Reiner and starring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, the film follows the fictional rock band Spinal Tap on an unforgettable yet disastrous tour. I invited Patrick Dupuis (EETF Podcast), John Mutford, Hector Contreras and Kyle Hildreth to discuss the movie's most unforgettable moments and their thoughts on the sequel.Support the show
The Fake Band Hall of Fame. A hallowed institution. Only the deserving few get in. (Except for that episode when we just let anybody in.) But this week's entries totally deserve it, because we are inducting the legends behind Spinal Tap.

"This Is Spinal Tap" (1984), also known as "This Is Spın̈al Tap: A Rockumentary by Martin Di Bergi," is a mockumentary comedy directed by the legendary Rob Reiner in his feature debut and co-written with stars Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, who play members of the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap, hilariously dubbed "one of England's loudest bands." Satirizing rock star excess and the earnest style of classic rock documentaries, the largely improvised film earned critical acclaim, modest box office returns, and later a devoted cult following that cemented its status as a landmark of the mockumentary genre and the source of the iconic phrase "Up to eleven." Selected for preservation by the Library of Congress in 2002, the film will finally get a sequel, "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues," with Reiner, Guest, McKean, and Shearer reuniting for one last concert in September 2025. Director Rob Reiner was kind enough to speak with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out The Golden 41st Anniversary 4K restoration of "This Is Spinal Tap" (with a special intro from Rob Reiner) in theaters from July 5th-7th, 2025 (get your tickets here) from Bleecker Street and will feature the first look at "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues."
