In this episode of Two Strike Noise, Jeff and Mark delve into various baseball history topics, starting with the story of Cal Ripken Jr.'s minor league team, the Iron Birds, and the infamous Billy Ripken 'f##k face' baseball card, interesting quirks like nickname origins, Vince McMahon's surprising link to Negro League baseball, and a major 1962 cheating scandal involving the Giants that was covered up and rarely discussed. They also honor recently passed players, including Bob Uecker and Tommy Brown, and battle through another round of 'Wax Pack Heroes' with vintage baseball cards. Have you ever felt that something was “meant to be?” Like that time you opened a pack of baseball cards and there, lying on the very top, was a 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey, Jr. rookie card? Maybe the clouds parted and a beam of light encircled the card while angelic music flooded the room. That card was meant to be yours…until you traded it to your brother for a Billy Ripken error card. Anyways, you get my point. There are times in life when we feel, deep inside, that we meant to do something, meet some person, or end up at some destination. The two men that Brandon and I spoke to for this podcast were meant to be outdoors. Literally. We talked to Brian and Ben from Meant2BOutdoors, a Christian ministry that “connects people to the outdoors, others, and themselves.” I think that after listening, you might just feel that you were meant to hear their message. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/time-to-sharpen/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/time-to-sharpen/support

Love that @museumoflondon is going to have an exhibit from @harrykane showing how as a youth he wanted to be a #footballer because kids need to see that dreams can become reality. So #samhowell has never had a #burger or #steak in his life. No #seafood either. Only #chicken in his diet. My condolences. I hope the #suicide of #naomijudd will raise awareness that #mentalhealth is a very serious matter. #whoopthattrick didn't work for #stephcurry and @warriors last night. #jamorant says @memgrizz in 7. How about #jrueholiday last night rejecting and then stealing ball from #marcussmart in last 10 seconds to give @bucks the game 5 win over @celtics in #nbaplayoffs plus that nasty cut for #giannisantetokounmpo over his eye. #stanleycupplayoffs @nyrangers still alive after 5-3 win over @penguins and #cindycrosby has an upper body injury. 7 of 8 series are going to a game 6. @angushout has to be excited. @wnba commercial flights and @seattlestorm @breannastewart30 is in health and safety protocols. No masks on flights. What do you expect?I didn't know about the Billy Ripken baseball card story. Thank you Darren Rovell.
Warning: This show may have a few curse words. We're talking about the 1989 Fleer Billy Ripken F Face Error Card. This card is the most infamous error card of all time. But the 1989 Fleer Baseball Card set is loaded with other magnificent cards including a Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card, and Randy Johnson rookie card. The guys also discuss the NFL quarterback carousel including Matt Ryan, Deshaun Watson, Russell Wilson, Baker Mayfield, and more.

In the fifth Collectable Daily meeting of arguably the world's leading sports appraisers, Nick and Simeon offer up lists of the memorabilia and cards they'd love love love to own, among them the legendary Billy Ripken bat (hobbyists know what that means) and an equally legendary -- and possibly non-existent -- Michael Jordan photo.
8-Bit Christmas chronicles a boy's quest to get a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) for Christmas in 1988. That plot evokes memories of both A Christmas Story—which it clearly pays homage to—and How I Met Your Mother—a show also starring one Neil Patrick Harris. As a more modern take on the familiar tale of a child's quest to attain what his parents are reluctant to get, 8-Bit Christmas doesn't feel entirely fresh; but that doesn't make it any less fun or nostalgic for those who grew up grinding away on the NES. This is a film built for kids of the 80s. Yet it also has a spirit of adventure sure to please the younger crowd. Its reviews—81% on Rotten Tomatoes with 27 of them—point to those attributes. That said, this movie won't be for everybody. It certainly wasn't everyone on the podcast's cup of tea. But, unlike the Power Glove, it doesn't suck. And who doesn't love shopping mall hijinks, projectile vomiting, and using Billy Ripken as a crucial plot point? Now sit back, reminisce over a couple of O'Fallon Dad's Oatmeal Cookie Stouts, and ready player two! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are buying black market Cabbage Patch Kids to appease our children! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – An epic quest for an NES? What's not to like? (00:00) Lingering Questions – We hear from our brothers in beer at Hop Nation USA and then share some of our favorite NES/video game memories. (27:31) The "Now, You're Playing with Power" Trivia Challenge – The Double Turn Podcast puts in a cheat code for unlimited finishing moves, and then I challenge the field to trivia about the original NES. (49:15) Recommendations – We offer our picks for the week and next up: We finish off "Hops and Jingle Bell Flops" by ringing in the New Year with Satan's wrath and the End of Days! (1:03:52) And, as always, hit us up on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram to check out all the interesting factoids—a boat load of NES trivia and more—from this week's episode! You can find this episode of Hops and Box Office Flops on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Podbean, Spotify, Acast, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, Vurbl, and Amazon Music!
8-Bit Christmas features Neil Patrick Harris as a modern-day dad telling his daughter the very '80s story of his quest for a Nintendo. It's packed with knowing '80s references like the Cabbage Patch Kid crisis and deep cuts like the infamous Billy Ripken "f--- face" card, and owes obvious debts to the '80s classics A Christmas Story and The Princess Bride. Tim, a child of the '80s, and Keith and Aaron, children of the '90s, have different levels of enthusiasm for the HBO Max film: Keith finally asks Tim: Are you maybe a little too close to this material? But this is a fun conversation that veers merrily into why dads don't build treehouses anymore, the best dumb Christmas movies, and, of course, true meaning of the holidays. Merry Christmas, f--- face. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today’s MLB lives and dies by its “new school” numbers. Over the last few decades, newly established statistics and on-field measurables have become so influential that they have infiltrated front offices, baseball operations departments, player development and scouting, and have significantly changed the game’s landscape. The game measures everything now and relies less and less on baseball experience and the wisdom established over years of playing and coaching. The power dynamic has changed. Stats are now king. This shift is the root of Major League Baseball’s growing culture war and the impetus behind “STATE OF PLAY”. Ripken believes that after years of new measurements and new jargon flooding the field of play it is now time to take a step back and examine what it all means. What are we learning at this “new school”, as the “old school” struggles to keep their place at the table and remain relevant in this new era? It’s a great read and a fascinating conversation with former major league ball player and MLB Analyst Billy Ripken
