In this episode of Locked Up Sports: New York Sports Talk, we dive deep into the business side of baseball with special guest Marc Saracino, corporate and business attorney, sports business blogger, and creator of The Saracino Source. Marc, a lifelong Mets fan, recently broke down the historic Juan Soto $765 million contract in detail. We unpack his insights on how mega-deals like Soto's are structured, the role of insurance in protecting teams from massive financial risks, and the balance of power wielded by the MLB Players Association in shaping contracts and benefits. We also tackle the recent controversy surrounding Gary Cohen's on-air comments about Cubs rookie Matt Shaw taking time off to attend Charlie Kirk's funeral — and whether that type of leave falls under the protections of the CBA. Of course, we'll also talk Mets — can they hold on and punch their ticket to the postseason for a second straight year? #LockedUpSports #Mets #JuanSoto #MLBContracts #SportsBusiness #MLBPA #GaryCohen #MattShaw #NewYorkMets #SportsTalk #BaseballPodcast All that and more in this can't-miss episode where sports, law, and business collide.

The Mets play by play voice is under scrutiny for comment's during Tuesday's broadcast
Hour 1 We started with a great night of baseball for the locals, with the Yankees clinching a playoff spot and the Mets coming back to beat the Cubs. It felt like a special night for the Mets. And where is Keith Hernandez? Is he sick? Jaxson Dart is starting for the Giants this weekend at home against the Chargers. Even though Russell Wilson had a great game against Dallas, he threw terrible interceptions last week. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with the sounds of the Yankees beating the White Sox and clinching a playoff spot. We heard the sounds of Howie Rose as the Mets came back to beat the Cubs as Brandon Nimmo had a 3-run game tying HR. Francisco Alvarez homered in the eighth which ended up being the game winner. Al actually had a new song about Jaxson Dart. Mike ‘I'm a man, I'm 40' Gundy was fired by Oklahoma State. In the final segment of the hour, WFAN producer Brian Rascona told Gio that Ken Griffey Jr was walking around the Ryder Cup and nobody seemed to notice him. Hour 2 Jaxson Dart is getting the start for the Giants this week. Nobody really talks about the pressure a quarterback faces in their first real NFL game. Boomer brings it up, but you don't hear many other people talk about it. It's different from the pre-season. Boomer likes Dart's attitude compared to some of the other rookie QBs that came to the Jets and Giants. Jerry returns for an update, but first Gio wonders if the teams being bused back and forth for the Ryder Cup are listening to the show. Jerry starts with Ian Poulter criticizing American golf fans. Brandon Nimmo hit a game tying 3-run homer as the Mets beat the Cubs. Francisco Alvarez ended up hitting what ended up being the game winning HR. The Yankees beat the White Sox and clinched a playoff spot. The Guardians have overtaken the Tigers and former WFAN Adam ‘The Bull' was so excited he made a weird noise. In the final segment of the hour, a caller wonders if Daniel Jones will get a big contract in Indianapolis (he will hang up and listen). Hour 3 We started the hour with the Jets as they play in Miami on Monday night. One of these teams is going to be 0-4. There is pressure on Mike McDaniel and Tua. In 2 of the 3 games, the Jets were very competitive. A caller wonders why the Giants even brought Russell Wilson in if they had already signed Jameis Winston. Jerry returns for an update and starts with Howie Rose and the sounds of the Mets beating the Cubs to get back in charge of their own destiny. Brandon Nimmo hit a game tying HR and Francisco Alvarez hit the eventual game winning HR. Jerry compares ‘douche bag says what' from the 1990s to ‘Boomer will cream pie me' from this morning. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about Gary Cohen's comments last night about a Cubs player missing a game to attend Charlie Kirk's memorial service. We continued arguing about the phrase, ‘control your own destiny'. Hour 4 Nicole Rae from Skratch Golf is in the studio to talk about the Ryder Cup. They hosted us for our trip to Pebble Beach as well. Jerry returns for his final update of the day, but first Gio gives us alcohol prices for drinks at the Ryder Cup. Jerry starts with the sounds of the Yankees beating the White Sox as Caballero had a walk off single. We heard Howie Rose on the call as Francisco Alvarez homered making it 9-7 Mets. Micah Parsons was asked how it will feel when he sacks Dak this weekend. The Moment of The Day: Al has a new song, reminding Gio of marriage. In the final segment of the show, WFAN producer Brian Rascona checks in from the Ryder Cup.
Gary Cohen notes Cubs absence as crew debates ‘control your own destiny.'
Jets face the Dolphins Monday night with both teams desperate to avoid 0-4, putting heat on Tua and McDaniel. A caller ripped the Giants for signing Wilson after already adding Jameis. Jerry's update featured Mets drama — Nimmo tying it, Alvarez winning it — and a wild “cream pie” slip. The hour wrapped with Gary Cohen's Cubs comments and another fight over “control your own destiny.”
Leadership Through Engaging Questions Gary B. Cohen shared his career journey, starting with growing ACI Telecentrics from two people and $4,000 to 2,200 employees and taking it public, achieving 50% compounded annual growth for the first 10 years. He then transitioned to writing a book on leadership and coaching, emphasizing the importance of asking questions rather than telling to engage employees. Gary highlighted that leaders need to shift from being tellers to askers, changing their identity to foster engagement, and he now focuses on coaching, which he believes is more crucial than ever in today's workplace. Transforming Healthcare Through Employee Engagement Michael shared his experience transforming a healthcare organization with a high turnover rate by listening to employees and implementing their suggestions without conditions. He reduced the turnover rate from 86% to 6% in one year by asking questions, showing genuine interest, and creating an environment where employees felt valued. Gary noted that this approach aligns with coaching principles, emphasizing the importance of moving from a position of knowing all the answers to one of curiosity and open-mindedness. Transforming Toxic to Collaborative Workplaces Michael shared his experience transforming a toxic work environment into a collaborative one, highlighting how addressing underlying issues and empowering staff led to significant improvements. He emphasized the importance of creating environments where individuals have both authority and accountability, and noted that the same people can maintain positive change even after organizational transformations. Gary mentioned his passion for writing a second book with Robert Dora, focusing on digital manufacturing. Balancing Permission and Employee Autonomy Gary discussed the concept of employees feeling "on the hook" in a positive way, contrasting it with the negative connotation often associated with the term. He emphasized the importance of balancing permission-giving and permission-seeking between leaders and employees, noting that excessive permission-giving can disengage employees and reduce their sense of ownership over their work. Gary and Michael explored how guardrails, such as job descriptions and budget allocations, can provide structure without stifling creativity or initiative. They agreed that leaders should help employees recognize these boundaries while encouraging autonomy and accountability. Empowering Mental Health Workers Michael shared his experience with empowering mental health workers to develop new programming, which resulted in a successful poster presentation at a conference. He emphasized the importance of employee ownership and engagement, as well as the value of celebrating project outcomes rather than focusing solely on ideas. Michael also discussed his approach to leadership, including his practice of asking questions to maintain a state of wonder and curiosity, and the importance of active listening. Peak Leadership Question-Asking Styles Gary discussed a tool called Peak Leadership, which identifies four question-asking styles based on two dimensions: perspective/evaluation and knowledge/action. He explained that most people only use one of these styles, limiting their questioning to 25% of the available options, but the model shows that individuals can develop and expand beyond their natural style. Covey Assessment Tool Introduction Gary discussed his company's decision to offer a free 7-minute assessment tool based on Stephen Covey's 360-degree quadrant model, which helps individuals and organizations ask better questions and improve their performance. Michael encouraged listeners to take advantage of the tool, emphasizing its value for organizations of all sizes. What if the mark of extraordinary leadership isn't found in having all the answers, but in asking the right questions? This eye-opening episode distills powerful insights from recent conversations with leadership experts Gary Cohen, Scott Burgmeyer, and Joe Davis—revealing a leadership framework built on curiosity, development, and generosity.Gary Cohen's journey from founding a company to growing it to 2,200 employees taught him a crucial lesson: leaders who constantly provide answers become organizational bottlenecks. The pivotal shift happens when leaders move from information-gathering to asking questions that empower others to think, act, and own solutions. This simple change transforms you from an answer-giver to a true multiplier, unleashing potential throughout your organization while satisfying people's fundamental needs for autonomy and recognition.Scott Burgmeyer adds another dimension by emphasizing that leadership isn't just about leading today's business—it's about consciously building tomorrow's leaders. His powerful personal journey reminds us that often we can't "read the label from inside the jar"—sometimes others see leadership potential in us before we recognize it ourselves. The true measure of leadership becomes not just what you accomplish, but who you develop along the way.Joe Davis completes this leadership trifecta with his concept of "generous leadership"—bringing vulnerability, authenticity, and genuine presence to your role. This approach isn't weakness; it's creating the psychological safety needed for teams to acknowledge mistakes, seek help, and collaborate effectively. Perhaps the most valuable gift? Your undivided attention—increasingly rare in our distracted world, yet precisely what makes people feel truly seen and valued. These insights are further enriched by glimpses into our new Psychology and Leadership series, exploring how understanding the brain's functioning transforms leadership effectiveness. From the astonishing case of Phineas Gage to recognizing how our unconscious patterns influence decisions, these psychological insights help us lead with greater intention and empathy.Ready to transform your leadership apSend us a textSupport the show✅ Follow The Leadership Project on your favourite podcast platform and listen to a new episode every week!

Jerry's fine with Pete Alonso writing "down goes Straw" on his 253rd home run ball, despite Gio's disagreement. They both agree Pete had no negative intentions. Gio wasn't a fan of Gary Cohen's call, but Jerry liked it. C-Lo joins the debate. The Mets and Yankees are struggling, holding onto playoff spots by one game. Chris "Mad Dog" Russo disliked the Mets' celebration and Cohen's call; Gio disagrees with Dog, but finds the pregame celebration unnecessary. They discuss the fate of Pete's home run ball. A caller wants Jeremy Hefner fired, but Jerry blames players and David Stearns first.
Hour 1 Returning from California, Gio and Jerry discuss the Mets' 6-0 lead blown last night, attributing the loss to David Peterson's poor performance and the team's recent pitching struggles. They question the Mets' future, especially with the pitching staff. C-Lo's update covers the Mets' loss, the Brewers' 12th consecutive win, the Yankees' inability to sweep, Giancarlo Stanton's strong play, injuries at the Jets and Giants joint practice, Breece Hall's contract extension comments, and Jerry Jones's experimental drug trial. The hour ends with Gio and Jerry still struggling with the Mets' ongoing issues. Hour 2 Gio and Jerry discuss their trip to Pebble Beach and their golf games. C-Lo provides an update, and they talk about the Mets' blown lead and Pete Alonso's out at the plate. C-Lo explains the Brewers' free burger promotion. They also discuss Cam Schlittler's early exit, Paul Goldschmidt's potential injury, and a spat between The 7 Line and BT & Sal. Finally, Gio praises Jaxson Dart as an NFL QB prospect, and a caller thanks them for the Pebble Beach trip. Hour 3 Gio thinks Jerry will have an issue with Pete Alonso writing “down goes Straw” on his 253rd home run ball but Jerry is ok with it. Gio says there was no reason at all to include that. They agree that Pete definitely didn't have any negative intentions when he wrote it. Gio wasn't a big fan of Gary Cohen's call of the home run but Jerry liked it. C-Lo returns for an update but first Gio asks him to chime in on the Pete and Darryl Strawberry debate. The Mets and Yankees are a combined 6-17 since the trade deadline. They're hanging onto playoff spots by one game. It's been a dark two weeks. Chris “Mad Dog” Russo was bothered by the Mets celebration of Pete Alonso's 253rd HR and Gary Cohen's call of it. Gio doesn't agree with Dog but he thinks the pregame celebration after the record-breaking game is unnecessary. In the final segment of the hour, Gio and Jerry wonder if Pete's home run ball will stay in the Mets Hall of Fame at Citi Field or at his home. A caller wants Jeremy Hefner fired. Gio says it could happen after the season but Jerry would put the blame on the players and David Stearns before Hefner. Hour 4 The Mets and Yankees both suffered frustrating losses. Gio and Jerry agree the Yankees' offensive struggles against Joe Ryan are déjà vu. Gio believes Aaron Boone will be fired if the Yankees miss the playoffs, while Jerry is unsure. A positive Mets fan from LA, Gio's critique of the Infinity Sports Network talent draft, and C-Lo's updates are also discussed. Gio is hesitant to ask Boomer for a favor. David Wright dislikes the Mets' home pinstripes. C-Lo explains a TikTok trend Brian Daboll referenced. Taylor Swift discussed her relationship with Travis and Jason Kelce on their podcast. Eddie undermines Gio's caddy story. The Moment of the Day: "Down goes Straw" and Jerry is "our Jeff McNeil." The hour concludes with discussions about watching Hard Knocks and CBS celebrating "The NFL Today."
Chris McMonigle and Keith McPherson filled in for Boomer, Gio & Jerry from Pebble Beach. They discussed Pete Alonso becoming the Mets' new home run king and a "get right" night for both the Mets and Yankees. C-Mac and Keith debated Alonso's future with the Mets, with C-Mac believing Steve Cohen will ensure Alonso stays, and Keith feeling last night's game solidified it. They also touched on Clay Holmes' struggles and the Mets' starting pitching concerns. C-Lo's update highlighted Alonso's historic homer. C-Mac and Keith also discussed Gary Cohen's call of the home run and Francisco Lindor's key bunt. C-Mac believes Alonso loves being a Met more than any other current New York athlete loves their team and will have a strong free agency market.
C-Lo begins with Pete Alonso's historic home run. He added another last night as the Mets totaled six homers against the Braves. C-Mac wonders how long Gary Cohen has had the “private iceberg” call ready. Keith thought it was too staged. C-Mac jokes that Clay Holmes would have been run out of town if he ruined last night's game. C-Mac loves the Minnesota Twins.
Hour 1 Guest hosts Chris McMonigle and Keith McPherson discuss Pete Alonso's new Mets home run record. C-Mac believes Steve Cohen will ensure Alonso remains a Met, while Keith is certain. They also address Clay Holmes' struggles and the Mets' starting pitching concerns. C-Lo's update focuses on Alonso's historic homer and the Mets' six-homer game. C-Mac and Keith debate Gary Cohen's call of the home run and C-Mac highlights Francisco Lindor's key bunt. C-Mac believes Alonso loves being a Met more than any current New York athlete loves being on their team. Hour 2 The Yankees secured two consecutive wins against the Twins. Carlos Rodon overcame a shaky start to pitch seven strong innings. Anthony Volpe's home run signals a turn in his season. While seeing encouraging signs, the guys still have concerns about the Yankees. A caller comparing the current Yankees to the 90s dynasty irked C-Mac. C-Lo reported on Pete Alonso's record night and Evan Roberts' moon-distracted drive. Giancarlo Stanton had four hits, prompting Syzun and C-Mac to advise caution when running. Jermaine Johnson is back from his achilles injury. The hour ended with a caller praising Brian Cashman, delighting C-Mac and Keith. Hour 3 The Jets and Giants held their second joint practice. Keith is optimistic about both teams, highlighting Abdul Carter's hype, improved Giants QB play, and Aaron Glenn's impact as Jets HC. C-Mac believes the Giants' pass rush can be dominant and prefers Justin Fields. C-Lo reported on Brandon Nimmo saving the Mets and the Yankees' comeback led by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. In the final segment, C-Mac recited a monologue, and he and Keith debated the Yankees' playoff chances. Hour 4 C-Mac worries about Abdul Carter's hype, but Keith assures him the Giants made the right pick. Keith, a free agent fan, explains why he's done with the Cowboys and Jerry Jones, despite C-Mac's loyalty. C-Lo's update includes his favorite song, "Hook" by Blues Traveler, and discussion of the upcoming Taylor Swift "New Heights" podcast. Pete Alonso broke the Mets' all-time home run record, sending a message to Steve Cohen and David Stearns about his future goals, while Keith finds the Mets' scoreboard jokes "little brother energy." Giancarlo Stanton led the Yankees to a win. C-Mac is concerned about Malik Nabers' continued absence from practice, which Keith attributes to avoiding Sauce Gardner. The segment concludes with Keith's bobblehead collecting and C-Mac's lack of interest.
BT and Sal ripped into the broadcast calls for Pete Alonso's record-breaking home run, focusing on what they felt was a pre-meditated, scripted call from SNY's Gary Cohen. BT argued that the "on his own private iceberg" line was "corny," a sentiment that Sal, despite his affection for Cohen, seemed to agree with. The duo contrasted the TV call with the radio broadcast, praising Keith Hernandez's more organic and fiery reaction. They also dove into a historic Yankees call by John Sterling, and the awkward moment when his partner Charlie Steiner interjected, highlighting the difference between a great, unscripted call and one that feels manufactured.
Sal and BT dove into the world of iconic home run calls, prompted by a discussion of Gary Cohen's "on his own private iceberg" line for Pete Alonso's record-breaking home run. The conversation took a fiery turn when they brought in the legendary John Sterling, who revealed the shocking backstory behind the famous Aaron Boone walk-off home run call. Sterling recounted his frustration when his then-partner Charlie Steiner called the home run and then "jumped in" on his signature "Yankees win!" call, a move that Sterling claims Steiner admitted he "always wanted to do." The exchange shed light on the often-fierce, competitive world of sports broadcasting and the deep-seated rivalries that can exist behind the mic.

Every leader knows the rush of validation when someone brings you a problem and you solve it on the spot. But Gary Cohen, founder of CO2 Coaching and author of Just Ask Leadership, learned that this habit can limit your team's potential and make you the organizational bottleneck. While growing his company from a $4,000 investment to 2,200 employees, he and his business partner became overwhelmed by constant questions. The solution wasn't giving faster answers—it was becoming question-askers instead of answer-givers.In interviews with over 100 exceptional leaders – from Fortune 500 executives to four-star generals – Cohen discovered they all had a moment where they shifted from being “the answer person” to “the question person.” For General Jack Chain, a promotion made him realize his role had fundamentally changed. For ConAgra's Mike Harper, moving from engineering to R&D forced him to lead experts whose knowledge far exceeded his own. These shifts inspired frameworks like the GPS model (Goal-Position-Strategy) for focused conversations and the PEAK model, which guides leaders through four questioning styles – Professor, Innovator, Judge, and Director – to spark breakthroughs.Cohen's most powerful insight is that most team members already know the answers. They don't need you to solve their problems—they need you to help them uncover solutions themselves. When they do, ownership skyrockets, and so does performance. The path to multiplying your leadership impact starts with changing your identity from “the teller” to “the asker.” Everything else follows from that transformation.
