Steve Zahn gained early attention for his breakout roles in the 1990s, including “Reality Bites” and “That Thing You Do!” He became a frequent scene-stealer in films like “Out of Sight,” “Happy, Texas,” and “Saving Silverman,” showcasing his offbeat humor and charm. In HBO's “Treme,” he played a passionate music teacher navigating post-Katrina New Orleans. More recently, he appeared in the first season of “The White Lotus,” earning critical acclaim for his role as a troubled father on vacation. His latest is personal on multiple levels—the indie film “She Dances,” which he co-wrote with his producing partner Rick Gomez, who also directs. On this episode, he talks about co-staring in that film with his daughter Audrey, and being continually blown away by her work. He takes us back to his early stage work, makes a case for the importance of rehearsal, gives us the two attributes that make a great director, explains why he loves the communal aspect of filmmaking, and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

Happy Valentine's Day! This year we're taking a look back at one of my favorite comedies which happens to star one of my favorite musicians of all time! Saving Silverman (or Evil Woman) Is about two friends who need to save their friend from a terrible relationship. We have all either had or even been this friend before. Watch our episode to see why we found this ridiculous comedy to be oddly relatable.

As a special holiday gift to The Film Stage podcast feed, listen to a new Box Office Bonanza! Here we talk about random box office weekends and where they fit into our lives. The movies, the memories! This episode features Dan Mecca, Conor O'Donnell, Mitchell Beaupre, Jordan Raup, and Cory Everett. The box office weekend in question is July 21, 2000. The number one movie in the country was the Robert Zemeckis-directed, Clark Gregg-scripted, Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer-starring supernatural thriller What Lies Beneath. The number three movie was the second Pokémon feature film, Pokémon 2000. Gladiator was still in theaters, so was U-571. But at the start, we mount a passionate defense of the new Zemeckis epic Here, which has now arrived digitally. After that, we talk about Martin Lawrence movies. We talk about how horrible Greg Kinnear's character is in Amy Heckerling's Loser. We talk about Al Pacino's new autobiography Sonny Boy. The sport doc Michael Jordan to the Max gets some discussion. An Office Space reference is completely ignored! There are too many 9/11 jokes! How many? You'll have to listen to find out. We remember that great bit with Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise from the MTV Movie Awards (“He's Harmless”). There's an appreciation of Jesus' Son as well. There's a Saving Silverman reference, talk of yo-yos and Yu-Gi-Oh! There's a remembrance of that time The Perfect Storm and The Patriot came out the same weekend. Finally, for a few moments I'm convinced that nobody has been recording the podcast! There's a lot here, people! We're thankful for you listening to us have fun! We hope you have some fun too! Check out The Film Stage's 2024 Holiday Gift Guide and Cory Everett's slew of Cinephile books and games! Enjoy this episode and we welcome other interesting box office weekends to cover in the future. Stay tuned in 2025 for more podcast news from The Film Stage!

IMDb's error and Jer's lack of cross-referencing lead us to talk about this week's title "Saving Silverman" from 2001 starring Steve Zahn, Jason Biggs, and Jack Black. A Comedy Central staple back in the day, does this mid-level comedy hold up over 20 years later?
We stretched our tastes to find underappreciated movies from Rotten Tomatoes rankings between 10 and 19 percent. We think that The Boondocks Saints (1999), Saving Silverman (2001), and National Lampoon's Van Wilder (2002) all deserve more credit than they are given. For the penultimate episode in our Comedy in the 2000s miniseries, we're diving into the rotten filmography of one of the biggest comedic superstars of the decade: Jack Black. First up, it's the unhinged 2001 buddy/revenge comedy "Saving Silverman" wherein Black co-stars alongside Steve Zahn as two thirds of a Neil Diamond cover band that kidnap their best friend's (Jason Biggs) manipulative girlfriend (Amanda Peet) in hopes of setting him up with a circus acrobat turned nun (Amanda Detmer). After that, we'll be moving on to the 2002 MTV-produced teen comedy "Orange County" featuring the stacked ensemble of Colin Hanks, Schuyler Fisk, Catherine O'Hara, John Lithgow, Kevin Kline, Ben Stiller, Leslie Mann, and of course, Jack Black as a deadbeat pillhead with dreams of starting a T-shirt company like Stussy. We're joined by writer and O.C. native, Kaycee Felton-Lui, to discuss the endless rewatch appeal of "Orange County," the unfair stigma around teen comedies that aren't helmed by prestige filmmakers, the criminally underrated Amanda Peet, and the genius of Jack Black. Is Jason Biggs a leading man? Can Catherine O'Hara do anything? Does Steve Zahn actually suck his own dick in "Saving Silverman"? Should more movies skewer the absurdity of America's obsession with ivy-league schools? How many times does Crazy Town actually play in both of these movies? And most importantly, who is Luigi Panini? There's only one place to find out. "Saving Silverman" is streaming on Amazon Prime via IMDB TV and "Orange County" is streaming on Cinemax.
Abby and Riley sit down with standup and musical comedian, Tommy McNamara to discuss the iconic Saving Silverman, where early 2000 boys be early 2000 boys and kidnap their best friend's toxic girlfriend. In this ep we ponder things like: could this be made into a feminist movie, is it responsible for a generation of bad men, and why don't they showcase more of Jason Bigg's butt after he gets plastic surgery? Tune in to find out! 'Tis the season to find Tommy's Christmas album, I Think I'm Starting to Like Christmas on Spotify and iTunes!
Amanda Peet (The Chair, Saving Silverman, Brockmire) is an actress, producer, and screenwriter. Amanda joins the Armchair Expert to discuss her early dating life, growing up in New York and London, and showing her kids inappropriate movies. Amanda and Dax talk about being Capricorns, how Amanda thinks Dax sounds like Bill Gates, and how difficult is it to be a showrunner. When you get coffee for other people, where do you put it in your car? And how did that work out for Brad this week? We talk about my instant karma, then Chuck gushes - almost inappropriately so - about his fondness for the show "90-Day Fiance." We talk about new HBO Podcasts and a new EP from The Front Bottoms. Chuck tells me about his night out at the socially-distanced Comedy Connection in Providence, then about meals at Metacom Kitchen, La Pinata, Butterbang Croissants, and Vienna Bakery. Wow! So much food! I talk about my experience watching the Artemis Fowl movie on Disney Plus, we talk about DL Hughley collapsing on stage, and we close with Chuck's affectionate take on the movie "Saving Silverman." - BradMP3 Download
--- yup, you read that right, ...Neil Diamond In defense of.... a new kind of episode. A 20 or so minute discussion about a musician / band who 'might' be misrepresented and/or misunderstood by most. In some cases there's a good reason - in others, maybe not. In our premier of this new installment, Steve tries to convince Mike that Neil Diamond is no joke. Mike is a huge fan of the movie Saving Silverman so...Steve's got his work cut out for him. Give it a listen and let us know what you think. Are you convinced? Be on the lookout for other "In defense of..." episodes from time to time. Have an artist who fits the mold? Send 'em our way and we'll take a look! Also....Steve wanted to add that he forgot to mention that Mr. Diamond was also responsible for the brilliance that is, "Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon." A song, like many others, initially written by Neil Diamond and covered by countless musicians- some of which may surprise you. Listen in for the rest.
