WE FINALLY GOT TO TALK ABOUT THE BEST BOOK...EVER?
Banned Books Week (launched in 1982) is normally in September/October, but given the state of things, we thought it was a relevant topic. Buying physical copies of books, when you can, seems to be a smart thing to do. PEN estimates that book bans have doubled in the past year; here's where to fight that by sending a letter to state lawmakers. Some of our sources: Data from the ALA; Unite Against Book Bans; National Coalition Against Censorship; PEN America; Authors Against Book Bans Recommended in this episode: B.R. Myers's The Third Wife of Faraday House and Clay McLeod Chapman's Wake Up and Open Your Eyes NEWS: We have a Bookshop.org shop now! Find all of our favorite books at our shop–and help out small businesses. UP NEXT: Tracy Cross Buy our books here, including our newest Toil and Trouble.

Why are we drawn to real-life movie and book locations? In this episode, we unpack the magnetic pull of film sets, book settings, and the landscapes our favorite characters once walked—even if only in fiction. From misty moors to neon-lit city corners, there's something deeply human about wanting to step into the world we've imagined.I also share my experience taking a storytelling-based color assessment (yes, that's a thing) and how it revealed deeper layers of the stories I gravitate toward—and the places I'm pulled to visit because of them. It's a reflection on how narrative shapes our travels, our memory, and maybe even our identity. From Velaris and the Night Court in ACOTAR (think Zermatt, Switzerland's snowy peaks and charming villages) to the battlefields of Fourth Wing, and the castles and rugged landscapes of Scotland that remind us of Terrasen from Throne of Glass. These places, once confined to the pages of our favorite books, can come alive when we travel to them.If you've ever traveled to places that feel like they came straight out of a movie set or BookTok or dream of walking through scenes that once felt fictional, this episode is for you.Read Your Color Quiz

Hannah's been busy grinding out elementary school book fairs (drug-dealer mentality for the win), so the John Updike's Ghost podcast has put in a call to the bullpen, and out walks ... Cyndle Plaisted Rials! Cyndle is a writer and creative writing teacher who teamed with Sam on a book earlier this year, as well as the Beer & Weed project, so you know she's ready to go. She has not, however, read "To Kill a Mockingbird" or "Of Mice and Men," so weird stuff is on the way. Here's what she and Sam had to chat about this week: - "All the Pretty Horses," by Cormac McCarthy — Sam has never read this, but it's awesome. If you've never read it, you should do it now. Just be prepared for very few commas. - "Lady Macbeth," by Ava Reid — Cyndle finds this a little better than Shakespeare's historical works, anyway. It's a little bit of a "Wicked" situation and it might help to read the original; what is Lysander doing in this book? Decent audiobook. - "Pickleballers," by Ilana Long — A racy book about people who play pickleball and like to bang. Sam laughed a few times, but didn't manage to finish this. Still, if you like romantic comedies, this is fine. - "Rejection," by Tony Tulathimutte — You might have seen the story "The Feminist"? That's the lead story in this collection, which is a serious collection of bad dudes. And hyper-online.

Unhinged behaviour ahead. Late night giggles ahead. And yet also....graphic discussion at points because Arobyn Hamil is a CREEP and what happened to Asterin is dark and sad. Our funniest epiosde to date. But heavy subject matter spoken on by unhinged girly pops.
We're kicking off our new era with a stacked episode!

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: Series Fatigue: The Dryad Storm by Laurie Forest Being excited about a new release can be scary. Being excited about a new release that is ALSO the conclusion to the series is another level of excited/scary. When that new release that is also the conclusion of the series then turns out to be a DNF for BOTH Laura Marie and Jessica Marie, then the question becomes? Was it them? or Is it really that bad? The Black Witch Chronicles comes to an end with The Dryad Storm, the book that was such a DNF that is sparked a question about fatigue and the willingness to journey through the slog. How much is the reader's time worth? When do you take ownership of your reading and acknowledge that you are not having fun? What other series suffer from series fatigue? If any? All that and more is discussed as ACOFAE Laura and ACOFAE Jessica pinpoint where the series lost them and why. "Anything for the pod, but not this." Although we do famously love/write/worship books over here at team SLAC, our adventure into this week's MUCH-REQUESTED topic—a literary commune packed with fantastical, extremely online, culty drama—gave us MAJOR culture shock. Whether you're a lifelong reader or your Hoovers are still in the mail, it's safe to assume you've brushed paths with this week's cult even without realizing it. Since its timely mid-pandemic inception, BookTok has taken the publishing industry by storm and has undoubtedly transformed the way young people buy, read, and obsess over books. Whether they're creating a whole new subgenre (dark romantasy, anyone?), lining up in droves for the latest Rebecca Yarros release, or casting an entire movie adaption of their fav read, we have come to learn that the BookTok girlies are a force to be reckoned with. Here to help Amanda and Reese navigate the new literary landscape and determine exactly how culty that force can be are bonafide booktokkers Morgann Book and Ayman's Books!
