The Good Read for this episode is ART OF BEING ALONE: Solitude is My Home Loneliness was My Cage by Renuka Gavrani The Art of Being Alone is more than just a self-help book. It's a journey-my journey. After spending years hoping for people to stay, I learned the value of my own company and began growing, exploring, and building my dream life. Now, I want to show you how to transform your “alone time” into a tool for growth and fulfillment. Why Are We Afraid of Being Alone? Finding Strength in Solitude This book is divided into two parts: Turning Loneliness into Solitude - Here, I'll guide you to redefine “alone time” as a space for discovery and empowerment. Using Solitude for Growth - Learn how solitude can fuel your personal growth and help you achieve your dreams without waiting for validation from others. This episode discusses the importance of voting in the 2024 Presidential Election. The Good Read for this episode is The Power of Crisis: How Three Threats - and Our Response - Will Change the World by Ian Bremmer. In this revelatory, unnerving, and ultimately hopeful book, Bremmer details how domestic and international conflicts leave us unprepared for a trio of looming crises—global health emergencies, transformative climate change, and the AI revolution. Today, Americans cannot reach consensus on any significant political issue, and US and Chinese leaders behave as if they're locked in a new Cold War. We are squandering opportunities to meet the challenges that will soon confront us all. In coming years, humanity will face viruses deadlier and more infectious than Covid. Intensifying climate change will put tens of millions of refugees in flight and require us to reimagine how we live our daily lives. Most dangerous of all, new technologies will reshape the geopolitical order, disrupting our livelihoods and destabilizing our societies faster than we can grasp and address their implications. The good news? Some farsighted political leaders, business decision-makers, and individual citizens are already collaborating to tackle all these crises. The question that should keep us awake is whether they will work well and quickly enough to limit the fallout—and, most importantly, whether we can use these crises to innovate our way toward a better world. Drawing on strategies both time-honored and cutting-edge, from the Marshall Plan to the Green New Deal, The Power of Crisis provides a roadmap for surviving—even thriving in—the 21st century. Bremmer shows governments, corporations, and every concerned citizen how we can use these coming crises to create the worldwide prosperity and opportunity that 20th-century globalism promised but failed to deliver. This episode discusses Vell's growth in struggles with grieving. The Good Read for this episode is Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life by Héctor García, Francesc Miralles According to the Japanese, everyone has an ikigai—a reason for living. And according to the residents of the Japanese village with the world's longest-living people, finding it is the key to a happier and longer life. Having a strong sense of ikigai—where what you love, what you're good at, what you can get paid for, and what the world needs all overlap—means that each day is infused with meaning. It's the reason we get up in the morning. It's also the reason many Japanese never really retire (in fact there's no word in Japanese that means retire in the sense it does in English): They remain active and work at what they enjoy, because they've found a real purpose in life—the happiness of always being busy. In researching this book, the authors interviewed the residents of the Japanese village with the highest percentage of 100-year-olds—one of the world's Blue Zones. Ikigai reveals the secrets to their longevity and happiness: how they eat, how they move, how they work, how they foster collaboration and community, and—their best-kept secret—how they find the ikigai that brings satisfaction to their lives. And it provides practical tools to help you discover your own ikigai. Because who doesn't want to find happiness in every day? This episode discusses Vell's reason for picking up a camera and becoming a full-time creative. The Good Read for this episode is The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin. Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can hone in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, as he has thought deeply about where creativity comes from and where it doesn't, he has learned that being an artist isn't about your specific output. It's about your relationship with the world. Creativity has a place in everyone's life, and everyone can make that place larger. There are a few more important responsibilities. The Creative Act is a beautiful and generous course of study that illuminates the artist's path as a road we all can follow. It distills the wisdom gleaned from a lifetime's work into a luminous reading experience that brings the power to create moments—and lifetimes—of exhilaration and transcendence closer to everyone. This episode discusses Vell's respect for his Dad and Father. The Good Read for this episode is Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance by Barack Obama. In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a black African father and a white American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father—a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man—has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey—first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother's family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family, confronts the bitter truth of his father's life, and at last reconciles his divided inheritance. The Good Read for this episode is JAY-Z: Made in America by Michael Eric Dyson, (Contribution & Foreword by) Pharrell This book wrestles with the biggest themes of JAY-Z's career, including hustling, and it recognizes the way that he's always weaved politics into his music, making important statements about race, criminal justice, black wealth and social injustice. As he enters his fifties, and to mark his thirty years as a recording artist, this is the perfect time to take a look at JAY-Z's career and his role in making this nation what it is today. This episode discusses Vell's difference between choices and decisions. The Good Read for this episode is The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. Eddie, an 83-year-old man killed trying to save a young girl, wakes up in the afterlife, where his life is retold by five people. As Eddie recounts his many ups and downs, he sees what his life meant, in turn reminding all of us that no matter how menial we feel, our life has meaning. This is a moving novel of immense emotional resonance. Eddie is a wounded war veteran, an old man who has lived, in his mind, an uninspired life. His job is fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. On his 83rd birthday, a tragic accident kills him, as he tries to save a little girl from a falling cart. He awakes in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a destination. It's a place where your life is explained to you by five people, some of whom you knew, others who may have been strangers. One by one, from childhood to soldier to old age, Eddie's five people revisit their connections to him on earth, illuminating the mysteries of his "meaningless" life, and revealing the haunting secret behind the eternal question: "Why was I here?" This episode discusses Vell setting the record straight regarding his relationship status. The Good Read for this episode is The Black Man's Guide to Romancing the Black Woman: Things Every Man Should Know About Every Woman by Dale J Kelly. What is romance? There is no definitive description of romance except what one perceives from watching others. Where does romance begin? It actually begins with responsibility; men and women have to be responsible for themselves and their actions to effectively be called a man or a woman. How does romance play a part in our society? It allows us to take the time to get to know each other on many intimate levels without demeaning one another. It opens the lines of communication and forces us to talk to each other and dispense with name-calling and character assassination. Romance is a derivative of love (Eros) and in many ways we've confused love for other things that complicate relationships. We've allowed our focus to be distracted causing romance to take a back seat. The Black Man's Guide to Romancing the Black Woman is a common sense approach to dealing with such issues and hopefully making romance a priority in our relationships again. This episode discusses Vell's value of privacy in safeguarding the things we cherish most. The Good Read for this episode is The Power of Moments: Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact by Chip Heath, Dan Heath. While human lives are endlessly variable, our most memorable positive moments are dominated by four elements: elevation, insight, pride, and connection. If we embrace these elements, we can conjure more moments that matter. What if a teacher could design a lesson that he knew his students would remember twenty years later? What if a manager knew how to create an experience that would delight customers? What if you had a better sense of how to create memories that matter to your children? This book delves into some fascinating mysteries of experience: Why we tend to remember the best or worst moment of an incident, the last moment, and forget the rest. This episode discusses Vell's excitement about his baby sister's double accomplishment of graduating from Mizzou and the surprise proposal. The Good Read for this episode is Einstein: His Life and Universe by Walter Isaacson How did his mind work? What made him a genius? Isaacson's biography shows how his scientific imagination sprang from the rebellious nature of his personality. His fascinating story is a testament to the connection between creativity and freedom. Based on newly released personal letters of Einstein, this book explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk—a struggling father in a difficult marriage who couldn't get a teaching job or a doctorate—became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos, the locksmith of the mysteries of the atom, and the universe. His success came from questioning conventional wisdom and marveling at mysteries that struck others as mundane. This led him to embrace a morality and politics based on respect for free minds, free spirits, and free individuals. These traits are just as vital for this new century of globalization, in which our success will depend on our creativity, as they were at the beginning of the last century when Einstein helped usher in the modern age. The Good Read for this episode is On the Shortness of Life by Seneca On the Shortness of Life" is a philosophical essay by Roman Stoic philosopher Seneca. In this timeless work, Seneca explores the theme of the brevity of life and the need to make the most of our time. He criticizes people for squandering their time on trivial pursuits and emphasizes the importance of focusing on meaningful and virtuous activities. Seneca advocates for a life of purpose, mindfulness, and the pursuit of wisdom. The essay encourages readers to reflect on their priorities, make conscious choices, and live a life in alignment with their values. Ultimately, Seneca's work is a profound reminder to appreciate life's fleeting nature and make the most of our time. This episode talks about Vell's take on the differences of dating, going put, and meeting up. The Good Read for this episode is Worthy by Jada Pinkett Smith Jada Pinkett Smith was living what many would view as a fairy-tale of Hollywood success. But appearances can be deceiving, and as she felt more and more separated from her sense of self, emotional turmoil took hold. Sparing no detail, Worthy chronicles her life—from a rebellious youth running the Baltimore streets as an observer and participant in the drug trade, to the deep bond she shared with Tupac Shakur from the moment they met, to her move to Los Angeles and the successful career she built on her own terms, to becoming the wife of superstar Will Smith and mother to Jaden, Willow and bonus-mom to Trey . A rollercoaster from the depths of suicidal depression to the heights of self-acceptance and spiritual healing, Worthy is a woman's journey to finding herself again. In a media-driven landscape that crafts narratives for our celebrities, Smith shares herself in an intimate conversation with readers. She answers questions about her difficult childhood, her marriage, her parenting style, her career choices, and the intense scrutiny that followed “the slap.” An impactful and rare memoir that engages and educates, Worthy shows why adhering to the status quo has never been the plan for Jada Pinkett Smith and why labels and stories crafted by others strip women of their authenticity. Worthy teaches us who Jada is, and how to embrace our most lovable qualities. Complete with thought-provoking writing prompts and meditations on how to discover who we really are and nourish our self-worth. What's Popping in Vell's World consists of "Battle of the List," War in Gaza, DOJ investigating the NBA over Big3 League, and more.
