My what a busy friend! While a woman and her boyfriend were going through a painful, temporary separation, she confided in and was consoled by a male, bi friend of hers. He helped her through the difficult time. But he was also propositioning her ex-boyfriend at the same, damn time! Now that she is back together with her boyfriend, can she trust this friend again? A woman gives a compelling defense of faking orgasms. Will Dan Savage accept it? On the Magnum, Dan welcomes back the thoroughly delightful comedian Zach Zimmerman. They discuss the word "daddy." Is it an honorific that one hurls at another? Or a pre-negotiated, agreed upon role? They also talk about anger in comedy, and the real meaning of tolerance. Zach's comedy special SURPRISE ME debuts on April 22. And, a woman is dating a new guy after ending her old relationship. She is still struggling with the break-up, but she isn't sure how much to reveal to her new guy about this. When he asks “How are you doing?” should she be honest about missing her ex? Gay stand-up comedian Zach Zimmerman grew up in Virginia with Evangelical parents and attended a school that taught the Bible instead of history and expelled any student found to have watched an R-rated movie. Zimmerman has journeyed far from their roots, having transformed from a “straight, meat-eating Christian conservative to a queer, vegetarian, atheist socialist.” We talk to Zimmerman about religious guilt, love and comedy and their new essay collection “Is it Hot in Here: Or am I Suffering for All Eternity for the Sins I Committed on Earth?” Guests: Zach Zimmerman, stand-up comedian; author, "Is It Hot in Here? (Or Am I Suffering for All Eternity for the Sins I Committed on Earth?)"
Zach Zimmerman has a custom-made sweater to match their new book “Is It Hot in Here (Or Am I Suffering for All Eternity for the Sins I Committed on Earth)?” Yes, it's a heck of a title, and just like the book, we unpack a lot together. Zach tells me about the best advice they got from their “burrito boss” and why their comedy is both “delightful and devastating.” I also do a teeny bit of trauma dumping. Just a teeny bit. It was pretty simple in comedian and writer Zach Zimmerman's mind when he was a kid: you had to accept Jesus Christ as your personal lord and savior or you would spend all eternity being tortured in the fiery pits of Hell. And he wanted to do that accepting. Problem was, God never spoke to young Zach or gave him any indication that he was saved. No revelatory ecstatic church service or voice from beyond to give Zach a sign, just constant doubt and terror. And that can mess someone up. Zach struggled for years with depression and anxiety. His mental health took a further hit when a close friend was killed in what was the largest mass shooting in American history at the time.Zach got to college at Princeton and in short order figured out that he was atheist and vegetarian and that the guys playing volleyball shirtless outside his dorm were pretty darn attractive. Now a successful author, Zach has received good therapy and can reflect on the experiences that formed his frame of mind.Preorder your copy of Zach's book, Is It Hot in Here (or Am I Suffering for All Eternity for the Sins I Committed on Earth)?, due April 18, 2023, wherever books are sold. So this conversation got a bit spicy… Define gold-star and then detail the finer points of being a seasoned lesbian? Yes, please. When Jackie brings on a whole gaggle of gays, few stones are left unturned in this episode of Relatable with Jackie Fabulous. Featuring comedians Akeem Woods, Punkie Johnson, and Zach Zimmerman, Jackie gets to the raw truth of each of their coming out stories as a teen, as an adult, and as a southerner. Should Gay Divorce Court be a thing and who gets what days when defining canine custody and puppy alimony? What does the repeal of Roe v. Wade mean for all of us? Plus… can you tell if a kid is gonna be a part of the community. This episode is peak hilarity. Like! Comment! Subscribe! OMG we're 90 episodes old today! Happy birthday to us, it's not easy staying unemployed this long! :) To celebrate, we have the hilarious comedian and writer Zach Zimmerman (The New Yorker) on the show. Zach has a book coming out this spring so we caught him early on the press tour! The book is called, Is It Hot in Here or Am I Suffering for all Eternity From all the Sins I Committed on Earth? And while he calls it a title, we call it a poem! The stories in this episode are awesome. Zach knew from a young age that he wanted to be on a stage, and to tell stories. But before the dream set in, his first jobs were working at Target during holiday season, Papa John's for one whole week (until his schedule conflicted with his play!) Then in college he did a few jobs but his heart was in creating original work. After college he found his "dream office job" at an LGBTQ community center which sounded like a cool experience. Eventually he made the move to work in advertising, which eventually brought him to NYC where he pursued comedy. One of his first shows was a magic/comedy show which Anna saw and loved, and that's how she met Zach! Now that you're a fan, make sure to follow Zach on social media at @zzdoublezz. And don't forget to pre-order Zach's book when it's available! Anna and Ellen also listen to a voicemail (have you called us yet?!) that someone left who tells the story about getting fired from a TV show because he was accused of stealing a feather cape. We're obsessed. Call us and be our next favorite voicemail.
