After an emergency Saturday sitting of parliament, British Steel's Scunthorpe plant is now - to all intents and purposes - under government control. The Chinese owners Jingye were intending to shut down the site, with the potential loss of almost 3,000 jobs and an end to 160 years of steelmaking in the town, but under emergency legislation a new CEO has been appointed and the company will report directly to the government - with the race now on to secure the raw materials to stop the furnaces at the plant shutting down. With Nigel Farage accusing China of deliberately sabotaging the plant, Kamal Ahmed and Tim Stanley ask Reform's candidate for Mayor of Lincolnshire - Dame Andrea Jenykns - whether the party believes that China should be removed from key UK infrastructure projects.Plus, Kamal and Tim grill each other on how privileged they are, after details emerged in The Daily Telegraph of Westminster Council's internal test for staff as part of its efforts to combat unconscious bias against ethnic minorities.Read:How posh are you really? In bad news for the Chancellor Rachel Reeves, inflation shot back up in January, with prices rising by 3%. Who could have possibly seen this coming, after Labour doubled down on net zero, raised national insurance by £25 billion and hiked the minimum wage? But where Labour is seemingly more economical is with the truth. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds appears to have been caught in a lie, embellishing his CV by claiming he was a solicitor when he never finished his training.Kamal and Camilla set out why the inflation rate, and ministers' lax attitude to the truth, could be a serious issue for the Government - and how the UK economy can be salvaged.Plus, it's a question that bitterly divides Britain: how to make a good cuppa. Today, Kristen Beckett of @mocktailsandmarathons joins me for a great conversation about the false promise of moderation, the challenges of navigating drinking and sobriety with a partner, and the beauty of the online sober community. A fellow Wisconsite, Kristen grew up in a home where drinking was seen as a normal part of everyday life. After the traumatic birth of her daughter, however, she began to lean on alcohol for more than just a way to unwind. The progressive nature of the substance then took hold, and during Covid she began drinking in the mornings to stave off the hangover from the night before. What followed were multiple rock bottoms, a trip to the ER, many Day 1's, and ultimately the moment when it just clicked… and she was done. Kristen began @mocktailsandmarathons as a way to unpack her experiences during early sobriety, and she found so much healing and growth in the community she has built there! Rebecca Silverman is an expert in how humans learn to read. It's a complex process, she says. First we must connect letters and sounds to decode words in texts. Researchers know a lot about the decoding process and how to teach it. But, beyond that, we must also comprehend what the words in texts are conveying. Comprehension is complex, and researchers know much less about the comprehension process and how to teach it, Silverman tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Episode Reference Links: Rebecca Silverman's Research Lab: Language to Literacy LabConnect With Us:Episode Transcripts >>> The Future of Everything WebsiteConnect with Russ >>> Threads or Twitter/XConnect with School of Engineering >>> Twitter/XChapters:(00:00:00) Introduction to Reading Challenges Host Russ Altman introduces guest Rebecca Sliverman and her research into the complexities of reading.(00:03:53) Decoding vs. Comprehension The breakdown of reading into decoding and comprehension, the challenges associated with each, and the lifelong process of improving these skills.(00:07:18) Variability in Learning to Read How children learn to read, including the impacts of linguistic comprehension, memory and socio-emotional contexts.(00:09:55) Cross-Cultural Differences in Reading The variability of reading acquisition across languages and cultures, highlighting the components of reading that vary in their developmental trajectory.(00:11:35) Research Challenges and Interventions in Reading Current research on the challenges of reading, particularly in identifying and supporting children with difficulties.(00:15:03) The Role of Technology in Reading The impact of technology on reading, the differences between reading on paper and digital formats, and the potential of educational technology in literacy development.(00:20:38) Importance of Family in Reading DevelopmentHow families play a role in early reading, with emphasis on storytelling and culturally relevant practices. There's a Montessori notion out there that we shouldn't teach letter names along with letter sounds to our young learners. We've often heard that children don't need to know the names of letters to read a word. And while that's technically true, the Science of Reading suggests we should reframe our thinking around letter names. In today's episode, I'm talking to Zil Jaeger, an experienced Montessori teacher, consultant and coach with a passion for literacy and steadfast commitment to anti-biased and anti-racist education. Zil shares what we can learn from the growing body of science about how children learn to read, how we can support learners who don't have foundational literacy skills, and what Zil thinks educators should stop doing when it comes to literacy for young learners. Zil also emphasizes how important repetition is to children learning to read. The more exposure they have to letter names and sounds, the better for their reading journey. What's in this episode:What Montessorians can learn from the growing body of science about how we learn to readWhy Zil recommends teaching letter names as well as sounds for young Montessori learnersHow we can empower learners to understand how human brains learn how to readHow educators can best support learners who enter a younger elementary classroom without foundational literacy skillsZil's recommended resources for teachers who want to learn more about the Science of ReadingWhat Zil thinks educators should NOT be doing in terms of literacyFor full show notes, resources, links and to download the transcript, visit:https://www.trilliummontessori.org/podcast/ Resources Mentioned in This Episode:University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI)Visit Zil's WebsiteFollow Zil on InstagramBook: Powerful Literacy in the Montessori Classroom by Susan Zoll, Natasha Feinberg, and Laura SaylorBook: Speech to Print by Louisa Cook MoatsLexia LETRS Professional LearningThe Literacy NestBook: Uncovering the Logic of English by Denise EideConnect With UsVisit our websiteFollow us on InstagramConnect with us on Facebook

What do the laundry cycle and the learning cycle have in common? A lot, actually. Today, we apply KC Davis's take on laundry to homeschooling. In her book “How to Keep House While Drowning, KC Davis talks about how the goal of the laundry cycle shouldn't be to have all your family's clothes clean at once. The goal is for everyone to have clean clothes to wear that day. The goal is to keep the cycle moving. We think the same concept applies to homeschooling. The goal of educating your child shouldn't be linear mastery. The goal is for your child to be able to tap into curiosity, knowledge, and problem-solving at any moment. The goal is to keep the learning cycle going. Lots of “aha!” moments in this episode– join us as we process it all. We explore the impact of social media on kids' anxiety, what parents can do to minimize the mental mess social media can make, and even how to rewire neural patterns it forms. We also dive into the myths of habit formation and how we can break down old habits to form better, new ones. Dr. Leaf's expertise doesn't stop there. She also gives a comprehensive explanation of the five steps of the Neurocycle, a tool set for self-regulation and changing your internal programming.00:01:32 — The Dangers of Social Media & Minimizing Mental Messes• Giving coffee to kids• Danger Coffee: dangercoffee.com• The mental health crisis kids are facing today• Social media's role in anxiety in kids• What is a mental mess?• Read: Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess• Avoiding a mental mess while using social media• Read: How to Help Your Child Clean Up Their Mental Mess• How to teach kids to go deep on topics they're interested in• The science behind how long it takes to build or change a habit00:27:31 — Habit Hacking 101• The 5 Steps Neurocycle to rebuild neural networks• The myth of building habits in 21 days• Identifying patterns in habit formation for transforming and healing the brain• How the history of habit formation and brain neuroplasticity has evolved over time• The new standard of care and giving hopeful diagnoses• Empowering ourselves to be the driver of our own health00:54:37 — Helping Kids Build Resilience• Curiosity as a tool for building resilience in kids• The importance of learning how to self-regulate• How modeling the Neurocycle can help parents and children manage emotions• Why you should double down on what makes you weird• Teaching kids to question everything to filter out what's real• Removing bias by connecting with others who aren't your age• Helping kids get good sleepResourcesDave Asprey's NEW Book ‘Smarter Not Harder' is out now: https://daveasprey.com/books Read: How to Help Your Child Clean Up Their Mental MessRead: Cleaning Up Your Mental MessWebsite: drleaf.comFacebook: Dr. Caroline LeafInstagram: @drcarolineleafYouTube: Dr. Caroline LeafPodcast: CLEANING UP YOUR MENTAL MESS5 Steps of Neurocycle Can Clean Up Your Mental Mess – Dr. Caroline Leaf with Dave Asprey – #799The Human Upgrade is produced by Crate Media.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
