Michael Cudahy(Combustible Edison, Christmas) joins us on the show to talk about the release of Propeller Product 4.1 double album. Cudahy was a founding member of Christmas. Christmas was known for its unique blend of alternative rock, post-punk, and experimental sounds, often with a dark and atmospheric edge. Their music was marked by layered guitar work, unconventional song structures, and a moody, sometimes brooding, tone. After Christmas, Cudahy went on to form Combustible Edison, a band that took a very different approach, blending lounge music, exotica, and surf rock influences. The group became known for its retro style, incorporating elements of mid-century cocktail culture, instrumental pop, and jazz, but with a contemporary twist. We decided to make this episode of Nersey entirely free, just like an issue of VICE Magazine sitting in American Apparel circa 2006. Nersey is a podcast by Trey Smith, Drew Millard, and Slava P. We are produced by Steel Tipped Dove and our music is by Craig S. Jenkins. Our show is technically about music. We publish new episodes most weeks, plus blog posts sometimes. Free subscribers get to listen to the first half of each episode; paid subscribers get to listen to the whole thing, which includes our legendary “Joe Budden Podcast-Style Sleepers Section.” We're also on Patreon. Batten down the hatches and put on your raincoats, sailors, because we're headed straight into some damn unfavorable economic headwinds. By that, we mean that once again, VICE has laid a bunch of people off and is generally in trouble. As all you Music Man heads know, trouble starts with a T, which rhymes with P, and that stands for “podcast.” Our podcast. Which, today, is about VICE. We're joined by mega-genius Zachary Lipez of Creem Magazine to help us figure out what VICE was, because he was in the NYC scene back in the 2000s when the mag was really popping off; meanwhile, we were all dumb teens who would grow up to work at VICE in the 2010s. Other topics discussed include Zach's excellent piece on the downfall of music journalism, how bands used to take a bunch of money from cigarette brands, performatively not taking care of yourself, the lost art of talking s**t in incredibly low-stakes contexts, and also electroclash. Special thanks to Yuri for letting Drew record at his house and also informing us that VICE created a “virtual Lower East Side” in like 2007. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit nersey.substack.com/subscribe

Ever had those moments where you're left pondering over whether Jay-Z is overrated? Or whether Gucci products are worth the hype? Well, that's exactly where we found ourselves in this episode! As we navigated through the world of pop culture and current events, we ended up in a whirlwind of discussions that included everything from the return of Vanderpump Rules to the mystery surrounding Beyonce's skin tone. But not every topic was about fun and games. A portion of our discussion took a more serious turn as we debated over issues of race, cultural appropriation, and offensive symbols in sports. We found ourselves divided over a recent incident involving a young boy accused of wearing blackface. It sparked an intense, yet insightful conversation on the complexities of race, appearance, and cultural sensitivity in today's society. Additionally, we spent some time reflecting on the disturbing trend of predators using fake personas to prey on young victims, a topic that no doubt left us all with chills.Throughout the episode, we also shared some personal anecdotes and our plans for game night, along with a new interactive segment, "Pick the Friend". This episode wasn't just about the laughs or the serious discussions, but it beautifully amalgamated the two into one entertaining package. This episode was a wild ride, but one that we're sure you'll enjoy. So come join us, friends, as we take you on a journey full of hearty laughs, thought-provoking debates, and candid discussions.

Emilio Quezada and Evan Shinn are two men that make up the Dewy Dudes, a skincare podcast that in my opinion has the best memes on the planet. Only because I get it. Dewy Dudes have been featured for their expert take on skincare through New York Magazine, GQ, Into the Gloss, Mr Porter, SSENSE, and the torched Vice Magazine. I met Emilio at friends and guests of the coffeeshop, Land to Sea in Brooklyn and when I first saw him, I thought that's a Dewy Dude, but where's Evan. I thought they were never separated.  We chatted outfront, told him my friend's name was Duy spelled Dewy and had the Dewy Dudes theme song in my DJ sets. Dewy Dudes is one of our favorite podcasts, Emilio's music, Mishegas is in our morning playlists to get up to.  Man I love facials. A skincare psy-op. According to the American Psychological Association, smiling - even if forced - can help boost one's mood. But what if you cannot seem to smile in public? The CDC states one-quarter of adults over 65 have severe tooth loss. Missing, misaligned, and discolored teeth can truly impact one's ability to freely smile and have self-confidence. We see the public's endeavor to combat these through the rise of utilizing the dental technologies of teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, braces, implants, and Invisalign®. But many myths online surround the world of dental health and oral hygiene. Are yellow teeth normal? Do whitening strips work? Is there irreversible teeth misalignment? Are veneers worth it, and do they require shaving down teeth? Should I opt for braces or clear aligners? We are joined today by Dr. Joyce Kahng, a cosmetic dentist and founder of Orange + Magnolia Dental Studio in Costa Mesa, CA. Have you ever scrolled through another business' Facebook feed or watched a YouTube video? Some content just seems to have that certain something that makes it go viral. But what is that certain something? How can you make your content catch on like wildfire? As it turns out, there's a science to going viral, and Brendan Kane is an expert in reverse engineering virality.   Kane has worked with some of the most prominent brands and celebrities in the world to help them generate massive social followings. He developed the first-ever influencer campaign on YouTube back in 2007 and has overseen $300 million in marketing spend for major corporations like MTV, Viacom, Vice Magazine, Paramount Pictures, and IKEA. In total, he's helped generate over $1 billion in revenue.   Whether you're a big corporation or a small business just starting out, Kane has the experience and knowledge to help you take your social media presence to the next level.    In this episode of Service Business Mastery, Tersh and Josh sit down with Brendan Kane to discuss:   What platforms you should focus on creating content for as a business owner. According to Brendan, it is best to focus on one platform and master it, rather than try to post content across all platforms without success.   Why getting into the head of your target audience is key to creating content that resonates with them for your service based business.   How people can spot a sales or marketing pitch in an email from a mile away. To be successful, think about how you would write an email to a friend about the same topic.   Brendan Kane also explains how the algorithms that control reach and distribution of content on these platforms are designed to maximize user retention. [Going viral on social media platforms requires creating effective content that engages users.]   So if you're looking to make your content go viral, Brendan Kane is definitely someone you want to learn from.   Check out these resources we mentioned during the podcast: This episode is brought to you by our sponsors Sera (visit their website) and CompanyCam (visit www.companycam.com/SBM for 14 day trial and 50% off your first two months). Focus on how you are telling your story and describing your level of expertise. ~ [17:35] ~ The best content creators on the planet make their subject matter interesting to the general person, get them to care enough to stop and watch. ~ [19:07] ~ Don't focus on doing a lot of CTAs within the content you're producing; focus on building brand loyalty and credibility with the stories that you are telling that correlate with your brand. ~ [25:33] ~ Paid marketing can be very effective as it allows you to retarget the people that view your organic content with more direct response type ads. ~ [27:30] ~ You have to learn how to communicate to this world effectively and if you don't take time and energy, you may get some early wins, but you won't know to reproduce it. ~ [38:02] It's not that people have micro-attention or they won't tune in for long periods of time, but because there are 4 billion creators in the planet and we need to stand out, grab attention in a way that sets clear expectations that your perspective is valuable, interesting or different than everybody else. ~ [40:29] -- LST is powered by www.balbertmarketing.com

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and The National Institute of drug abuse eventually three out of four people who suffer with addiction eventually recover. Meanwhile, Vice Magazine says approximately 33 percent of elite athletes are addicted to a drug they took to help them overcome their pain so they could go back to performing. For former MLB pitcher Brandon Puffer “After a 15-year MLB career, I have fallen to great depths and come out the other side with important lessons I want to share with those who might find themselves facing tough obstacles or set-backs in their own lives. For me, recovering from my addiction and hardships meant filling a God-shaped hole in my heart, and I now live my life with purpose and gratitude for all that has been restored. One of my proudest roles in the life I lead today is being the coach for a non-profit baseball organization that helps young people develop their baseball talent, and this is one of the many ways I plan to lead others in living lives they, too, can be proud of. I've been through many ups and downs, but what has been most important has been overcoming these low points and not allowing them to define me; my faith has guided me through these dark times with grace, courage, and the utmost determination.” He joined me this week to tell me more.
