This week, Kate unpacks the art, science, and history of gossip with Kelsey McKinney (from the beloved podcast Normal Gossip and author of NYT bestselling book You Didn't Hear This From Me). They explore a variety of angles for this topic, such as how dismissing gossip as "women's talk" has historically been a tool of patriarchal control, religious institutions, or corporations, etc., and how gossip networks have actually served as feminist resistance channels throughout history. They also examine their complicated relationship with parasocial relationships and "entitlement gossip," forever navigating the fine line between being messy Bs who love tea and recognizing gossip's legitimate social power. This week we continue a-milkin' that New York cow! Um, excuse us? We are walking here. Meagan and Lindy make a brave break from their cozy hotel room into the NYC winter night to watch Drag Race at a local bar/mystery tent and meet THE Thorgy Thor camping out in there! Somebody go back in time, call our elder care facility, and tell them to bring us a knit blanket! Have you ever experienced a winter chill? DM us Y/N @textmebackpodAnd next, we add a sexy twist to our age-old Segment P.U.B.E.S. This week we're calling it Segment P.U.B.E.S.: Crazy Lady Living in a Bag. Two guesses as to who the crazy ladies are. Won't you join us in our bag? Tbh we get a little real here because it's BAD out there, and the badness is all by design. (Check out Meagan's latest installment of SWAMP PERSON for more thoughts on “What are you allowed to be mad about?”)And ultimately we're gonna have to make room for more crazy ladies in our bag. We'll shove aside the orange peels, used tissues, old receipts, and empty hand sanitizer bottles to welcome in anyone who wants to fight alongside us for something better–and we're going to do our best to give them one of our crumbled cookies to welcome them in. If we're gonna turn the tides of fascism, it'll be with the help of misguided voters AND at least one annoying guy with a rinky-dink sign. We wanna know what you're mad about and what you're doing to resist! Email us at deartextmeback@gmail.com.Finally, a plea to the Text Me Backolytes: bring back the ghosts! Gossip can be “juicy, strange, funny and utterly banal” and we love to hear it, whether we identify as gossips or not. Kelsey McKinney, host and creator of the podcast Normal Gossip, has perfected the art of relaying other people's business, and she thinks that gossip has been unfairly maligned. In her book “You Didn't Hear This From Me,” McKinney reflects on the multitude of petty and profound ways we use gossip: to entertain, admonish, bond and teach communal values – even to protect one another from harm. Whether you love, hate, or elevate gossip to an art form, we want to hear from you: How do you share and use gossip in your life? Guests: Kelsey McKinney, author, "You Didn't Hear This From Me: (Mostly) True Notes on Gossip"; host and creator of the podcast Normal Gossip
Kelsey McKinney has built her career on gossip. The co-creator and former host of the popular podcast Normal Gossip has been interested in the topic since her upbringing in the Evangelical church, where she was taught that talking about others is a sin. Now, she's out with a new book, You Didn't Hear This From Me, which argues that gossip is a natural, morally-neutral social tool. In today's episode, McKinney joins NPR's Juana Summers for a conversation that touches on the author's religious upbringing, the relationship between gossip and misinformation, and reality TV as an opportunity for social learning. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

A new book called You Didn't Hear This From Me: Notes On The Art Of Gossip, explores humanity's relationship to gossip, and what it suggests about our desire to seek out the truth. Journalist, author and former host of the Normal Gossip podcast Kelsey McKinney, shares what she's learned about the social value of the rumor mill.
With President Trump back in the White House, Ukraine finds its once top ally has now become a wild card in its three-year war with Russia. The U.S. has frozen billions of dollars earmarked for foreign aid, significantly hampering medical, food, and other humanitarian aid and development assistance programs overseas. Instrumentalist and audio engineer Daniel Ramirez lost his family’s rental home in the Eaton Fire. He reflects on his sons’ learning music there, and what the disaster meant for his history of depression. Kelsey McKinney hosted the podcast “Normal Gossip” for two years, spilling the tea with guests and dramatizing certain details. Her lessons about gossip are now published in a new book, which combines research, personal essays, and memoirs.
For Kelsey McKinney, the author of the new book, “You Didn't Hear This From Me: (Mostly) True Notes on Gossip,” spreading a good story occupied a morally gray zone throughout her childhood.McKinney, who is also the former host of the podcast, “Normal Gossip,” talks with Modern Love's Anna Martin about navigating the ups and downs of gossiping in her own life.McKinney also reads the Modern Love essay “We Were a Party of Two, but Never Quite Alone” by Linda Button, who tells the story of how gossiping with her rich suitor's exes brought the euphoria of her relationship back down to earth. While reading Button's essay, McKinney fields questions from Martin so they can do some gossiping of their own.How to submit a Modern Love Essay to The New York Times. How to submit a Tiny Love Story. As the pandemic forced us to socialize at a distance, journalist and writer Kelsey McKinney was suddenly unable to collect the juicy stories she'd usually get over drinks with friends, so she started the popular Normal Gossip podcast… and it became an instant hit. After years of gossiping on the airwaves, McKinney joins Piya Chattopadhyay to discuss her new book, You Didn't Hear this From Me, to break down the origins of gossip, the reason people everywhere love to to do it and the risks that come with spreading rumours if you don't know where they came from.

Is gossip just a petty pastime, or a tool to empower the marginalized? Or both? From ancient hearsay to celebrity blind items to the group chat's hottest tea, gossip has always been a part of how humans connect, but why does it carry such a negative (gendered) reputation? Host Amanda Montell (@amanda_montell) is joined by journalist, novelist, and Normal Gossip creator Kelsey McKinney (@mckinneykelsey) to unravel the fascinating etymology and moral gray areas of gossip in the digital age. Together, they explore if gossip can be an "addiction," how to get people to gossip with us *more*, if the internet has corrupted gossip's original aims, and whether it's actually possible to be a good person and still enjoy a little harmless chatter. What's this? A messy love quadrangle? You know Kelly and Ragon are all over that! We channel our best Normal Gossip podcast inspiration and dive into our discussion of the self-sabotaging lovers of Rainbow Valley! We ask such questions as “What's Ellen's deal anyway?” And “Wait, do we agree with Norman Douglas?” And most importantly “Who should we cast in our movie version of this story?” On a more serious note, if you'd like to help Kelly rebuild after losing her home in the terrible Eaton fire, we have a fundraiser to support her as she begins the overwhelming task of recovering. And if you would like to help Los Angeles recover from the horrific wildfires, here are some places that are doing good work: World Central Kitchen is feeding people on the ground in Los Angeles. LA County Fire Department is doing heroic work and we aren't done with the fires. Pasadena Humane Society is caring for the wild animals and pets lost or injured in the fire. Baby2Baby provides disaster relief to families and children in poverty impacted by the fires. Give Directly is fundraising to provide direct cash support to those in most need after the fire for shelter, food, clothing. Inspired by: This whole episode was inspired by one of our favorite podcasts Normal Gossip. Kelly was inspired by the 1995 Persuasion adaptation and the miniseries based on Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South. Ragon was inspired by the classic rom-com While You Were Sleeping and the time travel romance in About Time . Defector Media, the sports and culture publication launched four years ago by former Deadspin writers, is an example of the mixed picture for the future of the media business. On the plus side, it is a profitable, employee-owned publication with 42,500 paying subscribers supporting a $4.6 million business. At the same time, the company saw revenue growth drop to 2.2% from 18% last year and 16% in 2022.Defector's Jasper Wang joined me to discuss Defector's plans to expand its ad revenue, the inevitable challenges of fast decisionmaking in an employee-owned business, the “lean stack” approach of outsourcing as many publishing and corporate functions as possible, and the growth of its Normal Gossip podcast and diversification of Defector's audience.
