In the general case, it is not safe or recommended. AGENCY BRIEF: STREET SWEEPER / USAS-12 DESTRUCTIVE DEVICE RECLASSIFICATIONWhat this really was: In 1994, ATF took lawfully owned shotguns and shoved them into the NFA “destructive device” category. No vote in Congress. No new statute. Just an agency ruling that turned specific 12-gauge shotguns into the same legal category as grenades. The targets were the Striker-12, the Street Sweeper, and the USAS-12. The Striker and Street Sweeper used revolving cylinders. The USAS-12 was a semi-auto, magazine-fed shotgun. They all fired ordinary 12-gauge shells, the same kind of ammunition people put through hunting pumps all over the country. The legal hook was buried in the National Firearms Act, specifically 26 U.S.C. § 5845(f). That section says a weapon with a bore over one-half inch can be treated as a destructive device unless the government decides it is “generally recognized as particularly suitable for sporting purposes.” A 12-gauge shotgun has a bore of about .73 inches. So every 12-gauge in America avoids the NFA only because ATF treats it as sporting enough. That is the trapdoor. In 1994, during the Clinton administration, ATF issued Rulings 94-1 and 94-2. The agency said these shotguns had no recognized sporting purpose, pointing to their weight, capacity, and military-style features. Once ATF withdrew that exemption, the guns became destructive devices. The pattern was simple: Start with a broad statute and an elastic test like “sporting purposes.” Use subjective factors, including appearance, to pull back prior approval. Reclassify the guns by agency ruling. Open a short amnesty period for tax-free registration. Turn missed paperwork into felony exposure. Confirmed fact: ATF used the sporting purposes clause to reclassify these firearms and require NFA registration without Congress passing a new law. What is less clear is how many legacy owners actually got notice before the amnesty window closed. But the legal threat was real, and the policy result stuck....

GOING BALLISTIC Professor Jens Ludwig Pushes Behavioral Training and Public Space Improvements for Gun Violence Reduction (Savage) University of Chicago Professor Jens Ludwig advocates alternatives to uncertain gun control measures, proposing behavioral training programs like ‘Becoming A Man' in Chicago public schools to teach de-escalation of conflicts and urban design changes such as converting empty lots to pocket parks. These interventions target intuitive human thinking patterns (95% of brain activity) and environmental factors in high-violence areas to prevent escalation to gun violence. Detailed in his 2025 book ‘Unforgiving Places: The Unexpected Origins of American Gun Violence,' the approach focuses on low-income U.S. neighborhoods without restricting firearms ownership. GOA Demands Investigation into ATF's Leaking of Personal Information in Silencer Shop Found. v. BATFE (Savage) Gun Owners of America (GOA) is demanding a U.S. Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General investigation after DOJ attorneys representing the ATF publicly disclosed sensitive NFA tax returns and personal details of a GOA member on a court docket without redaction during the Silencer Shop Found. v. BATFE litigation. The filings included unredacted ATF Forms 1 and a declaration detailing the member's firearm collection, with the error repeated even after being alerted. GOA cites potential violations of 26 U.S.C. § 6103 prohibiting public disclosure of such information. Shreveport, Louisiana: Convicted Felon Kills 8 Children in Mass Shooting (Savage) A convicted felon in Shreveport, Louisiana, fatally shot eight children aged 3 to 11 across three homes and injured two adult women on April 19, 2026, before being killed by police after a chase. The perpetrator violated federal law by possessing a firearm due to his prior felony conviction for shooting at a vehicle. The incident has sparked political commentary on gun control, with critics like California Gov. Gavin Newsom blaming the NRA and calling for restrictions. 13 U.S. Senators Demand ATF Stop Enforcing Vacated Biden-Era ‘Pistol Brace' Final Rule (Savage) Thirteen Republican U.S. Senators, led by Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), sent a letter to the ATF on April 15 demanding an end to enforcement of the vacated 2023 ‘Factoring Criteria for Firearms with an Attached Stabilizing Brace' rule, which classified most pistols with stabilizing braces as short-barreled rifles under the National Firearms Act. They urge the ATF to issue an interpretive rule clarifying that braced firearms are not SBRs and to seek a permanent injunction via ongoing litigation by Texas and Gun Owners of America. The rule was vacated by courts in August 2024, but ATF signals intent to continue its legal theory. I recently ordered my first suppressor since I live in a comme state now and they're trying to put a $500 tax on suppressors. I got a resilient suppressors, simple man 30 cal can. 2 questions. One, Is this a decent suppressor for the $500 I paid. Two, how many rounds do you think it will last. I will mostly be using it on bolt actions with occasional use on an ar. Great show! Question from Anonymous Coward from GA If reasonable fear of grave bodily harm justifies self defence, and whistles and bullhorns cause permanent hearing damage, why aren't we shooting protesters? Question from Dusky from Florida Dear WLS, We are seeing quite a bit of piston driven rifle systems, mainly AR (cause fuck everything else) hit not only the market but the front lines and the streets in some cases as it seems to be being issued more often. I understand the basic concept of the piston driven rifle; doesn't dump trash and heat into the bolt so much as well as other things… (maybe Jeremy can even explain some of the differences of some of the different piston systems, if we're lucky enough for him to oblige us in between burps and yawns and hitting his mic if he'snot playing clash of clans [love you Jerombe]) So why though? Probably has a lot to do with the previously stated reason, as well as running suppressors being common SOP for many, which brings up my question – Will we ever see more piston systems than DI? Do you think there will be a point where that happens, is there that much of an advantage for that to be a likely scenario? Thank you for your time. Dusky. Some notes. Question from DrCivilRightsGuy Hey guys. It's MLK weekend and I feel the Democrats sold black people a promise of prosperity and then decided to renig, ergo their situation may be worse now than before the civil rights movement. Many leaders came out of that flotsam, both MLK and Malcolm X rose above the rest. Both were very pro-gun but had different ideas on how to fight injustice. What does the cast think could have happened if the 70s went X's way instead of MLK's? What would both say about how things are now? Also, did nick just drop an n-bomb and then call those two heroes “sambos”? DrCivilRightsGuy Question from Anonymous Coward from Michigan With NFA stamps costing $0, I'm about to SBR a metric ton of lowers and would like to do my own NFA engraving. A Masterclass competitive shooter, Walther Pro Staff instructor, and Safariland cadre member, Paul is first and foremost a student of the craft — and it shows. We talk about building skill that holds under pressure, developing people and teams, the realities of the firearms training business, and what pursuing mastery really means in a world chasing shortcuts. She started competing at the ripe old age of four and continued all throughout her childhood in both Western and English disciplines. After an apprenticeship in Texas with some of the country's top cutting horse trainers, she was introduced to the sport of mounted shooting in California, where she qualified for the World Championship after only her 4th competition. Since those early days, she's developed a reputation as an accomplished trainer of both horses and people, won just about everything there is to win in the competitive arena and cultivated a thriving business dedicated to introducing others to her sport. Her career includes not only training and instruction but product development, working with renowned companies such as Circle Y Saddles, Professional's Choice, Uberti Firearms and Safariland to create products for the sport. She is also a published author, and wrote a how-to training book, along with numerous articles for multiple industry related publications. Her proudest accomplishment remains winning the title of Overall World Champion, becoming the first woman to best her male competitors. She did this riding Justin, a former trail horse that she nurtured from scratch, building him into a phenomenal equine athlete. Since then, Kenda won the Overall World title three more times on both Justin and her mare Sparky. She has also taken the Overall National Champion title six times on both horses combined.

Kanders officially resigned his position at the Whitney in late July. We discussed how Museums can better equip themselves to appeal to a neurodiverse audience, and what the benefits are for institutions who make small changes to be more inclusive. She is the captain of Team S&W, And sponsored by big names in shooting like Trijicon, Federal Premium Ammunition, Safariland, The National Shooting Sports Foundation and Liberty Safes. You can find Toys, Tools, Guns and Rules on Amazon along with Julie's first book Shoot. Since our recording, Julie has been elected to the NRA Board of Directors where Julie is a wife and mother and you can see her commitment to her family in all that she does. You can find out more about Julie and keep track of everything she is up to by visiting her website as Juliegolob.com This show was recorded as part of our J-frame January series and unfortunately it has just sat in the can for a long time. As I have spooled up the Safety Solutions Academy Podcast again I decided that there was too much of Julie's time and too many quality segments in this show to just let it sit. and so here it is. Julie and I start off the show with some silly banter During the core of the show we jump into these topics. Julie talks about the most fun she's ever had with a revolver. Julie's concealed carry journey and how it relates to J-frames. What Julie sees as the greatest misunderstanding that people have about revolvers in general. How should someone make the determination as to whether they should carry a revolver or a semi-automatic? What Julie sees as the greatest set of advantages that the J-Frame offers? What are the greatest disadvantages of the J-Frame? What Julie thinks the perfect J-Frame would look like. Revolver grip - What Julie's grip looks like. If there was one tip that people could implement for improving their revolver shooting what would it be? Speed loaders, speed strips or loose rounds? What does your revolver reload look like? If Julie was in Montana and carrying a wheel gun, what would it be? Julie's new book Toys, Tools, Guns and Rules Patron Only Segment: Goal Setting - Julie's Bianchi Cup Goals for 2018 and how to set realistic goals in the shooting sports and in life.
