She started competing at the ripe old age of four and continued all throughout her childhood in both Western and English disciplines. After an apprenticeship in Texas with some of the country's top cutting horse trainers, she was introduced to the sport of mounted shooting in California, where she qualified for the World Championship after only her 4th competition. Since those early days, she's developed a reputation as an accomplished trainer of both horses and people, won just about everything there is to win in the competitive arena and cultivated a thriving business dedicated to introducing others to her sport. Her career includes not only training and instruction but product development, working with renowned companies such as Circle Y Saddles, Professional's Choice, Uberti Firearms and Safariland to create products for the sport. She is also a published author, and wrote a how-to training book, along with numerous articles for multiple industry related publications. Her proudest accomplishment remains winning the title of Overall World Champion, becoming the first woman to best her male competitors. She did this riding Justin, a former trail horse that she nurtured from scratch, building him into a phenomenal equine athlete. Since then, Kenda won the Overall World title three more times on both Justin and her mare Sparky. She has also taken the Overall National Champion title six times on both horses combined.

Today, journalists, legal professionals, activists, and artists challenge the state's monopoly on investigation and the production of narratives of truth. They probe corruption, human rights violations, environmental crimes, and technological domination. Organisations such as WikiLeaks, Bellingcat, or Forensic Architecture pore over open-source videos and satellite imagery to undertake visual investigations. This combination of diverse fields is what Fuller and Weizman call 'investigative aesthetics': the mobilisation of sensibilities associated with art, architecture, and other such practices in order to challenge power. Investigative Aesthetics draws on theories of knowledge, ecology and technology; evaluates the methods of citizen counter-forensics, micro-history and art. These new practices take place in the studio and the laboratory, the courtroom and the gallery, online and in the streets, as they strive towards the construction of a new common sense. Matthew Fuller and Eyal Weizman speak to Pierre d'Alancaisez about the logics behind Forensic Architecture and the evidentiary turn: the aesthetics of distributed sensing, the investigative commons, and the condition of hyperaesthesia. Matthew Fuller is a Professor of Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. He is the author of Media Ecologies, and with Andrew Goffey, Evil Media. QUOTES 01:52 "Body armor is technically bullet-resistant. There's no such thing as bulletproof even though there's things like the bulletproof vest partnership and that kind of thing out there. It is just bullet-resistant." 05:43 "We see the pictures of the tattoos coming back. They're really proud of that moment, that number that they've earned. It symbolizes that everything they worked hard for did the job and brought them home." 15:30 "Literally half of the agencies in the United States don't supply to their officers. They're like, if you want body armor, go get it. It's not mandatory wear. We're not required to give it to you." 18:47 "Katie Lawson out in Oklahoma City, again Presidential Medal of Valor winner. She was getting shot to pieces in her car from a rifle, and when she realized the car wasn't offering her any protection, she popped the door open and charged the shooter. That kind of heroism doesn't get talked about that much these days but it should." ----------------------------- SUMMARY In this episode of the National Police Association Podcast, Sgt. Betsy Smith interviews Ed Hinchey, Sr. Armor Technical Specialist of Safariland and Director of The SAVES Club. Body armor is a critical piece of equipment in safeguarding police lives and the SAVES Club honors those who survived critical times thanks to their armor. Today, Ed shares SAVES whose stories have impacted him the most. However, many people don't know that body armor is not a mandatory piece of equipment and many officers who want this protection have to purchase it out of pocket. ------------------------------ HIGHLIGHTS 01:26 How body armor saved Ed and introduced him to the SAVES Club 05:57 Categories of the SAVES Club 11:04 Why not armor every police car? 14:48 Body armor: A personal cost to most police officers 17:34 Ed shares the SAVES who impacted him the most ------------------------------ RESOURCES National Police Association

This week, I talk to Hyperallergic news editor Jasmine Weber, and reporters Hakim Bishara and Valentina di Liscia, to discuss some of the major stories they’ve been reporting on. Art’s role in upholding the status quo has been long diminished, but we’ve seen major developments to challenge this, including the removal of Confederate statues across the United States; the toppling of a Columbus statue in Minneapolis by members of the American Indian Movement; the decision by MCA Chicago to halt its contract with local police; celebrities advocating for justice for Breonna Taylor; and the vow by former Whitney Museum Vice Chair Warren Kanders to sell Safariland divisions that manufactures tear gas.We also discuss our editorial decision to blur the faces of protesters, as well as two important essays we published on the origins of the word “loot” and the meaning of journalistic “objectivity.”I also speak to scholar and photographer Artyom Tonoyan about what he saw during the May 29th protests in Minneapolis.Hyperallergic continues to be on top of the biggest stories in the art community during the pandemic. Guest host, Michelle Hartney rounds out her month-long dive into Art & Morality with Decolonize This Place. Decolonize This Place is an action-oriented collective of activists who stage protests in cultural institutions to open conversations related to Indigenous struggle, Black liberation, free Palestine, global wage workers and de-gentrification. In this episode, Michelle and Marz Saffore, along with, Amy Weng members of Decolonize This Place, discuss the practice of "art washing," who defines what art is or isn't, issues of display, and the responsibility museum and institutions have to hold their board members accountable for actions which go against their values.Notably, at the time of this recording, Michelle and Decolonize This Place members debated the position of Warren B. Kanders as, then, Vice-Chairman at the Whitney Museum. Kanders company, Safariland, produces tear-gas canisters and other supplies used by the military and law enforcement. Safariland canisters have been used against unarmed migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, protestors in Ferguson, Missouri, Turkey’s Gezi Park, the Gaza Strip, Standing Rock in North Dakota, and, most recently, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Decolonize this Place has led the charge in protesting Kanders presence on the Museum's board hosting 9 weeks of art and action in the weeks leading up to the Whitney Biennial. Today, on July 25, 2019, Warren B. Kanders announced his resignation as Vice-Chairman at the Whitney.- About Decolonize This Place -Decolonize This Place is an action-oriented movement centering around Indigenous struggle, Black liberation, free Palestine, global wage workers and de-gentrification. Rafael Shimunov is "just someone from Queens" who was born in Uzbekistan, and incorporates creative tactics into grassroots campaigns. Rafael is a board member of Jews for Racial & Economic Justice, and formerly with the Working Families Party and the Center for Constitutional Rights. In December 2018, Rafael guerilla-style installed his own painting on a wall in the Whitney Museum of American Art. The piece depicted a family running from teargas that was fired at the U.S./Mexico border. The action was in protest of The Whitney's Board of Trustees Vice Chairman and owner of Safariland, Warren Kanders. Art magazine Hyperalergic reported that canisters of teargas bearing Safariland’s name were found where U.S. Customs and Border Protection had fired teargas at Central American migrants near Tijuana in November 2018. The migrants, who included children, were seeking asylum in the U.S. If you generally pay attention to lefty news, you may already have seen some of Rafael's other work. He livestreamed the JFK Muslim ban protests for the Working Families Party, which received 16 million views on Facebook alone. He also made the video that used a red overlay to compare videos, the original and the doctored Inforwars version that was shared by the White House, of the altercation over a microphone between Jim Acosta and a White House intern when Trump cut off Acosta's question in November 2018. We spoke with Rafael at the Anchor Podcast Lab in Manhattan, about how to and why to sneak a piece of protest art into a museum, the ownership of cultural institutions, cars honking in support of demonstrations, coming to America from Uzbekistan, growing up in an immigrant family in Queens, and how using art in protest taps into different parts of people’s brains. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/protest-and-survive/support

Last week's clash between U.S. law enforcement and Central American migrants along the border with Mexico took place thousands of miles from New York. But the controversy surrounding the conflict found its way to New York City through an unlikely place: the Whitney Museum. Two days after the event, the arts news site Hyperallergic reported that Warren B. Kanders, one of the museum’s top board members, owns Safariland, the company that made the tear gas used on the border. In response to the news, more than 100 staffers at the museum wrote a letter demanding answers about Kanders and his business, which prompted responses from both him and the museum's director, Adam Weinberg. The controversy has led to criticism of the Whitney and restarted a conversation about the role of money in the arts, especially when it comes from donors that people disagree with. This week on Money Talking, Charlie Herman discusses the issue with Robin Pogrebin, reporter for the Culture Desk at The New York Times, and Hrag Vartanian, editor-in-chief of Hyperallergic.
