On this episode I'm joined by 1989 Open Champion and 4 time US Ryder Cup team member Mark Calcavecchia, one of the great Amateur players, Broadcasters, and now Instructors in our game Bobby Clampett, one of the most decorated Instructors in our game, and 2 time Tennessee Teacher of the Year Virgil Herring, and former Tour Caddie of the Legends Larry Malestic. Mark Calcavecchia and I talk about his 4 Ryder Cup appearances. We hear about some of the classic pairings he had and matches he played in. We talk about the celebratory moments, how the pressure of the Ryder Cup compares to playing in a major, and his go-for-broke playing style. Bobby Clampett is one of the all-time great amateur players. We go back to his time at BYU and some of the great tournaments he won. We hear about the 1978 World Amateur Championship, his win at the Western Amateur, and the Porter Cup that same year. We also get into his Impact Zone Golf training philosophy and the dynamics of the golf swing. Virgil Herring is a 2 time Tennessee Teacher of the Year along with being a Top 50 US Kids Instructor. He has also coached several Tour players including Brandt Snedeker. We hear about how they got hooked up and what made Brandt one of the all-time great putters on Tour. We also talk mental approach and why Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin is right when he says, "It's not what you're capable of, it's what you're willing to do." Larry Malestic caddied on the European Tour for 2 years and on the PGA & Champions Tour for 12. He was on the bag for legends like Gary Player, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Lee Trevino, Tom Weiskopf, Orville Moody, and Bruce Crampton. Larry shares some of the great stories he tells in the book including caddying for Gary Player at The Masters, being on the bag for Chi Chi during the 1991 Senior Skins Game which also included Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and Lee Trevino. So many great stories in this segment and in his book. Larry is a great storyteller.

Billy is a Master Instructor, having studied under famed Instructors Greg McHatton and Ben Doyle. We also have Bobby Clampett. Bobby is a Monterey Peninsula legend having been the number one amateur in the World while matriculating under legendary BYU Coach Karl Tucker. Clampett had humble success on TOUR and eventually went into broadcasting where he became a great voice at CBS Golf. Now, Clampett has created his philosophy called, “ The Impact Zone”. He has schools primarily in Florida and is rapidly expanding. Bobby also is a Winemaker and a Golf Course Architect. Incredibly accomplished to say the least. In this episode, we talk about Mr. Clampett's playing career and his life away from playing. We talk also about the importance of proper instruction and creating a “system “ that is learnable and sustainable for the student. Bobby's teaching philosophy keeps the student within a certain framework to always have tangible things to work on. And, it's not JUST the swing ! It is everything else to have you playing to your potential. Thank you Billy and Bobby for coming on. It was a pleasure and I'm sure the words spoken in this episode will undoubtedly help folks to get clear on the games ! You can reach Billy easiest on his Instagram @billmackinneygolfsecrets and you can find Bobby at www.impact zone golf.com
John Erickson is an American professional golfer who played, and won several events, on the Canadian Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia Tour. Erickson was an early protege, alongside Mac O'Grady and Bobby Clampett, of The Golfing Machine (book) by Homer Kelley. After John retired from professional competition he took to research and instruction and developed the Advanced Ball-Striking System which ostensibly teaches elements exhibited by the best ball-strikers in the history of the game. He joins #OntheMark to talk about things great ball-strikers do with a special reference to Ben Hogan. Specifically John dives into the following: Differences between Swingers and Hitters, Proper Acceleration as a Key to Great Striking, Creating Force (Mass x Acceleration) "Pushing" and "Pulling" at the same time in the swing, Wide vs Narrow Stance-widths, The Body Pivot and a Pivot-Driven Hit, His "4:30" line of Delivery, and Leverage of the Rotation of the Torso in the golfswing. Improve your knowledge and understanding of how to strike the golf ball consistently and powerfully. Download this podcast or watch it on Youtube. Search Mark Immelman.
My name is Jesse Perryman and I am your Host of The Flaghunters Golf Podcast where we discuss ALL things Golf improvement. Today on the Pod we have two very distinguished guests. First is Mr. Brian Manzella of the Brian Manzella Golf School. Brian started is 40 year teaching career under legendary teacher Ben Doyle. After reaching the highest level of The Golfing Machine(G.S.E.D.), Brian left that organization to join forces with Dr. Steven Nesbit and Master Instructor Michael Jacobs to for the Jacobs 3D initiative, developing Kinetic and Kinematic software for analyzing the Golf swing. Mr. Billy MacKinney is a Southern California Hall Of Fame teacher inductee. His resume includes reaching the Master level in The Golfing Machine (G.S.E.M.), teaching for over 30 years and has working with some of the best players in the World and does some collaborative work with Mr. Bobby Clampett in his Golf Schools. In this conversation, we talk about the applicable science application to the swing motion as well as understanding the basics of physics in the swing. We also talk about the D plane and other topics. To find Brian, go to www.Brian Manzella golf.com. He offers private instruction as well as Zoom lessons. He also has Golf schools. Hello and welcome to the Flaghunters Golf Podcast ! Today on the Pod we have Mr. Greg McHatton and Mr. Billy Mackinney ! Both of these Gentleman have been deeply educated in The Golfing Machine. Mr. McHatton have achieved the highest level that one can achieve in The Golfing Machine with a G.S.E.D. title, which is the equivalent of a Doctorate Degree. Mr. Mackinney has achieved the title of G.S.E.M. which is the equivalent of a Masters Degree. For those who are unfamiliar with The Golfing Machine, it is a highly complex Golf instructional book written by a Engineer named Homer Kelly. The First edition was published in 1969. There are 7 editions of the book. Mr. Greg McHatton is a long-time instructor in the Southern California area that has deeply influenced the likes of John Erickson, Sean Foley, Billy Mackinney, Bobby Schaeffer, Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer. Mr. Billy Mackinney is a long-time Golf instructor that is now in the Sarasota area. Billy notably is a member of the Southern California PGA Hall Of Fame. Billy is not only is educated in The Golfing Machine, he has also aligned himself with Bobby Clampett in Mr. Clampett's "Impact Zone'. These two Gentlemen are highly educated in the ways of The Golfing Machine but you would never know given the language that they use to help folks to golfing salvation. One of the misconceptions with The Golfing Machine and it's instructors is that they use complicated techno jargon to relay to the student what he/she needs to know to learn and grow. Thats a big reason why I want to demystify this very polarizing subject. In fact, most Golfing Machine instructors keep it incredibly simple ! They have done all of the deep contemplative work so we don't have to ! I have this book and its practitioners to deeply thank for my Golfing journey. A big THANK YOU to Greg and Billy for coming on and celebrating this masterpiece that Mr. Kelly wrote !

Hello and welcome to another great edition of the Flaghunters Golf Podcast ! Today we have my good friend and trusted ally, retired PGA Tour caddy Bobby Conlan. Bobby C, as we affectionately call him hails from Carmel Valley, CA that caddied on Tour for some of the World's best. He came out on Tour with Bobby Clampett in the early 80's when Clampett was a PGA Tour rookie. Bobby C's career spanned from the early 80's to around 2015 when he finally hung em up as we say. In this conversation, Bobby C talks about his observations of the World's best and how we can apply some of his thoughts to help benefit our own games. The conversation is also filled with great stories about his time on Tour. A big thank you to Bobby C for coming on and thank you for listening ! Cheers, Jesse
In the first hour, they guys are joined by, Kramer Hickok's caddie William Lanier, who has his knowledge tested by Jerry Walters. Today, Homer Kelley's 1969 book The Golfing Machine is a standard text for those who study the science of the golf swing. Famous instructors cite it, as do tour pros like Bryson DeChambeau and Steve Elkington. But in 1982, The Golfing Machine was most associated with 23-year-old Bobby Clampett, who had been schooled in Kelley's system. Clampett had compiled a stellar amateur résumé, and after two rounds of the '82 Open Championship, he led by five shots. He was on the verge of validating what he had once told a reporter about The Golfing Machine: "It's the Bible of golf." In this edition of our audio documentary series, we tell the story of Homer Kelley, Bobby Clampett, and their quest to prove that science could solve the mysteries of the game. Season two of Fried Egg Stories is brought to you by Precision Pro Golf. This episode was produced by Garrett Morrison and mixed by Cameron Hurdus.
Bob Friend shares the story about falling in love with Scottish golf when he played in the 2016 Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie. He also talks about Jordan Spieth and the amount of time he's taking over shots before pulling the trigger, the sign of a clouded mind. I asked Bob what he looked for in a caddie and why it was a penalty for Segundo Oliva Pinto's caddie to touch the sand on the 18th hole of his match in the US Amateur Championship. John Cook shares memories from his time playing at Ohio State and helping them win the 1979 National Championship. We also talked about his 1978 US Amateur Championship victory over Scott Hoch, and his first win on Tour at the 1-81 Bing Crosby National Pro-Am in a 5 way playoff over some of the legends of the game in Hale Irwin, Bobby Clampett, Ben Crenshaw, and Barney Thompson. Top Instructor Bob Grissett talks set up, spine angle and the things he learned from legendary Instructors Bob Toski, David Ledbetter and Jack Grout.

This Wednesday episode begins with a discussion on tacos, overrated components of tacos, and the delivery vessels of tacos. We then transition to the official announcement of the skins match at Seminole. We ponder how Rory will carry the conversation, how Rickie will activate, how DJ will strategize his way around, how Wolff could be a breakout star and, of course, whether TaylorMade will put CT machines on the first tee for testing. Mostly, we just praise the effort to bring televised golf (for a good cause) back into our lives and at a course that so few have seen on TV. An article on the European Tour’s dire financial situation also leads to a brief discussion on how different the world of golf might look when this is over and how the Euro Tour should focus on a trimmed down core product. Then Andy brings some numbers to the table to compare and contrast some of the peak decade-long runs we keep encountering during our Spotlight series and applying that marker to some modern superstars. How do they hold up against each other and to some of the names we’ve discussed in detail this past month, like Nick Faldo and Fred Couples? Lastly, we spend some time reliving the career of Bobby Clampett in what is not a full-fledged Spotlight but more of a short Flashlight review. His outrageous amateur run is discussed. We laugh at his hijinks from an all-around amusing 1979 U.S. Open, which also included the infamous Hinkle Tree and an imposter playing a practice round. Clampett’s flameout at the 1982 Open, where he held a 7-shot lead, is highlighted with Dan Jenkins reading. Finally, we discuss his place in history as the great hope of the Golfing Machine that fizzled out following the promise of his amateur success.

552: Bobby Clampett was the Low Amateur at the 1979 US Open and the 1980 Masters. He played on the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour in addition to being a network golf announcer/commentator. After playing with over 1,000 amateurs at more than 220 Pro-Ams he noticed something about their divots that separates high handicappers from Tour players. “...the Touring pros had a swing bottom approximately 4 inches in front of the center of the golf ball. For every inch amateurs were behind that 4 inches, equated to, on average, 4 strokes per inch!"
