Brian Manzella is a perennial member of Golf Digest magazine's 50 Best Teachers in America List. He is also a Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher in America. His 40-year+ teaching career includes a long tutelage under the late Ben Doyle, and a lengthy relationship with PGA Champion, and multiple PGA TOUR winner David Toms. Brian joins #OntheMark to illustrate the Alpha, Beta and Gamma Axes and how the golf-club performs in relation to them throughout the golfswing. His insights are a function of the 3D Golf-swing Research done by the Michael Jacobs team. Using the "Jacobs' 3D Airplane he describes and illustrates the 3 Dimensional Kinetics the club undergoes during the golfswing. He shows how and when the club is 'pushed or pulled' and when it is torqued. Very importantly he illustrates how research on over three thousand golf-swings has proved that a good ball-striker makes the sum of the 'Moments Alpha' or 'Rotaters' positive in the transition into the downswing. Brian illustrates the importance of this move in order to allay misunderstandings about shallowing the club in the downswing. He shows drills and PGA TOUR examples, like Rory McIlroy and Lee Trevino to galvanize his points and insights. He also explains how Sergio Garcia strikes the golf ball so well by describing how various hand-paths results in different Alpha, Beta and Gamma Forces and Torques. It may sound complicated but it is really easy to learn to 'tumble' and not 'flop' the shaft angle in the downswing to strike the ball more powerfully and crisply. Welcome back to the Edel Golf Podcast! In today’s episode, I want to talk with you about something that means a lot to me personally. Having been a PGA Professional for nearly 25 years, it’s important for me to recognize the people who have helped me throughout my entire career as a player, teacher, and clubmaker. My hope is that you, as a listener, seek some of these people out and learn from the knowledge they have to share. The first individual is the late Ben Doyle. He was the first authorized instructor of the Golfing Machine. I “first met Ben back in 1989… I was just a young college kid at the time…” Not only did I learn a lot from this wonderful man, but he also opened up a huge network of the world’s best instructors, players, and influencers. Sure, Ben shared a lot of information with me. More than anything, however, ”he taught me how to be a golf professional… how to man your post, how to care about your students.”After working with Ben, I started working with Henry Griffitts where I met Randy Henry. In my opinion, “he is the father of modern-day fitting.” His company invented things like the lie board and removable shaft system that we still use today. The time I spent with both Ben Doyle and Randy Henry tremendously shaped what Edel Golf has become today.Mike Adams is another individual who made a huge impact on me and my career. Not to be confused with Adams Golf, Mike is an extraordinary teacher who’s written north of 20 books, taught four presidents, the list goes on. Suffice it to say, “the guy’s influenced more teachers than anybody in the business.” He “gives and gives and gives, and he never takes.” One of the smartest guys I’ve ever been around is Mark Sweeney, the creator of Aim Point. His hard work and research have revolutionized the green reading process and I’m proud to call him my friend. Through Mike, I met Terry Rowles. He works alongside Mike to create processes to “demystify the golf swing… make it more about how you can play your best golf… how you can understand your own body type…” A large part of their work is helping other instructors understand these complex systems so that they can better serve their students. Jim Fannin is a world leader when it comes to sports psychology. Reading his work has played a huge role in helping me stay in the zone both on and off the golf course. Last but not least, is one of my best friends, Mike Schy. Mike thinks outside the box and was instrumental in helping Bryson DeChambeau learn to play with single-length clubs. This list is far from complete as far as people that have played a critical role in shaping who I am as a PGA Professional and a person. However, these folks are free thinkers and it’s my whole-hearted belief that the knowledge and information they bring to the table is worth sharing with everybody. If you’re curious to learn a little more about what each of these people are about, I highly encourage you to seek them out. Thanks for tuning in and I’ll see you next time on the Edel Golf Podcast!

MIKE BENDER Master Instructor, Mike Bender Golf Academy 2009 National PGA Teacher of the Year Growing up in Waterloo, Iowa, Mike Bender was an inveterate tinkerer. He would dismantle, then reassemble, radios, televisions, bicycles and anything else that could be taken apart and put back together. It was this razor sharp mechanical aptitude, an eye for detail and a passion for golf that have combined to allow this Midwestern native to become one of the top golf instructors in the world. Today, Bender can efficiently assemble a better golf swing for any golfer from rank beginners to the game's top touring professionals. This extraordinary knowledge combined with his ability to explain the necessary fundamentals in a clear and concise manner is why he is the 2009 PGA of America National Teacher of the Year, ranked among the Top 10 Greatest Teachers in America by Golf Digest Magazine and, for more than a decade, has been included in GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Teacher list. As Bender has quickly achieved worldwide recognition among his peers, the game’s top players have sought out his advice. Zach Johnson, 2007 Masters and AT&T Classic champion, has trained with Mike since Johnson was launching his professional career on the mini-tours at the beginning of the decade. LPGA tournament winners, Seon Hwa Lee and Joo Mi Kim also have been working with Mike for years. More recently, PGA Tour veterans including Skip Kendall and two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen have put their faith in Mike. All told, Bender has helped nearly two dozen PGA, Champions and LPGA Tour professionals with their games. Many of these professionals have a high comfort level with Mike because they know he has been in their shoes. Bender was a three-time NCAA All-American (1978-1980) and two-time NCAA Division III individual champion (1979-1980) before spending three seasons on the PGA Tour from 1987-89. This high level of competition inspired Mike to search out top teachers to help him with his own game. During the 1980s while he was competing, he spent significant time learning about the golf swing from Ben Doyle, Mike Adams, David Leadbetter and Mac O’Grady, all of whom have been ranked among the 50 Greatest Teachers in America by Golf Digest. It was while working with these teachers that Bender’s swing theories were refined. But having a solid understanding of the golf swing doesn’t necessarily make a teacher great. The instructor must also have a burning desire to transfer this knowledge to actual improvement in each student’s game. Mike not only wants to be able to explain how a student should make the most efficient golf swing possible, but he wants to make sure the student feels the proper swing for himself. Once the student can feel the proper motion, it becomes critical to find ways to enable the student to develop the correct motion even when the teacher isn’t watching. Bender’s revolutionary solution is called MEGSA PPE. For more than a decade Bender filled his garage designing prototypes of what was to become this breakthrough training system. The final result, which stands for Most Efficient Golf Swing Attainable Perfect Practice Equipment is now being used by more than a dozen touring professionals, including Johnson and Morgan Pressel. This comprehensive training station is located on a practice range or indoor facility and allows golfers to hit shots while avoiding the unit's adjustable bumpers which provide real-time feedback as to whether or not the club and body are in the preferred positions during the swing. Thousands of amateurs are already hooked on MEGSA PPE at select facilities around the country. While still in the early stages of the consumer roll out, Bender is working on plans to have MEGSA PPE equipped facilities throughout the world in the near future. Today, from his home base near Orlando at Timacuan Golf Club in Lake Mary, Florida, Bender continues to tinker, designing new training aids, refining MEGSA PPE and trying to understand in even more detail what traits can make a golf swing even more efficient and powerful. For Mike, it is a quest for perfection that will never be complete, it is also a quest that has already made Bender one of the finest instructors golf has ever known.
