Mike Van de Elzen: Creme brulee with rhubarb

Hope we are all enjoying the school holidays! We are managing to get through them just.  This week we have just started to harvest some Rhubarb, which is a bit odd as you mainly relate to rhubarb being used in heavier winter desserts and dishes. However rhubarb is in fact a spring vegetable or fruit.  Rhubarb is in fact a fruit not a vegetable. In 1947, a New Yolk court ruled that it was to be counted as a fruit for the reason being it has no seed and grows in the dirt.   However, Rhubarb does have seeds and new plants can be propagated from seed but it is not recommended. So it can be classified as a vegetable but for culinary purposes is a fruit.  Let's eat creme brulee. Vanilla creme brulee is such a good thing to match with Rhubarb as the slight tartness of the fruit cuts through the vanilla brulee.    Creme brulee w muscovado Rhubarb  Cook time: 45 minutes  Prep time: 10 minutes  Serves: 6    750ml cream   1/2 cup caster sugar   1/4 tsp vanilla paste   6 egg yolks   1 whole egg   6 tbsp caster sugar (for the caramel top)   4 sticks rhubarb, peeled and cut into pieces   4 star anise   4 cinnamon bark   2 tbsp muscovado sugar or dark brown sugar   2 tbsp water  Preheat oven to 140*C (NOT fan-forced). Place cream, sugar and vanilla in a saucepan over medium heat. Slowly bring the heat until hot (do not allow to boil). Whisk egg yolks, and whole egg in a heatproof bowl until well combined. Slowly add in the cream mixture until well combined. Allow to settle for a couple of minutes before skimming all bubbles off the surface of the cream.   For the muscovado rhubarb, place the rhubarb into a pot along with the star anise, cinnamon and sugar. Bring to the boil and turn down until tender, remove from the heat.   Place a tsp of rhubarb into the bottom of each mould and then slowly pour over the brulee mix   Place the moulds in a deep roasting dish, then pour boiling water into the bottom of the dish until it reaches halfway up the bowls. Very carefully place the roasting dish in the oven and cook for 45 minutes. Remove the crème brulee form the oven and allow to cool before placing into your fridge to chill.   Once the creme brulee is cool, place a tbsp of caster sugar over each brulee and using a gas torch, caramelise the sugar until its super dark. Mike's website – www.vandeelzen.com Carrying on with my  "Make Xmas Day Easier" theme.  Today want to share with you a great little dessert for Xmas day. No only are they super easy to make, they can also be stored for up to 4 days making them perfect for getting ahead.  I'm talking about creme brûlée. Whilst I have spoken about other flavours before, today I have a recipe for a chocolate creme brûlée. The chocolate not only adds a rich layer of flavour, it also helps with the setting. Ensuring they always work. I find that Whittakers Dark Ghana with its cocoa levels at 72% is perfect for these. Which is not only affordable its available from most supermarkets.  But feel free to change it out if you want. Try going down to Dark chocolate with its 50% cocoa or even over to white chocolate, but be careful it doesn't get too sweet. Change the fruits out also, poached strawberries, pineapple, kiwifruit, berries or poach some pears in a bit of mulled wine or even some brandy! Chocolate creme brulee Cook time: 35 minutes Prep time: 10 minutes Serves 6 Ingredients:  4 tbsp caster sugar  100g good quality dark chocolate  1/2 tsp vanilla paste  5 egg yolks  1 whole egg  6 tbsp caster sugar (for the caramel top)  Instructions: Preheat oven to 140*C (NOT fan-forced).  Place cream, sugar, chocolate and vanilla in a saucepan over medium heat.  Cook, stirring constantly, for 5 minutes or until hot (do not allow to boil).  Remove saucepan from heat.  Whisk egg yolks, vanilla paste and whole egg in a heatproof bowl until well combined.  Pour hot milk mixture over egg yolk mixture, stirring constantly.  Skim all bubbles off the surface then pour into 6 small ovenproof bowls.  Place bowls in a deep roasting dish, then pour boiling water into the bottom of the dish until it reaches halfway up the bowls.  Very carefully place the roasting dish in the oven and cook for 35 minutes.  Remove the crème brulee form the oven and allow to cool before placing into your fridge to chill.

Taken as an obedience, Fr. Seraphim Rose was asked to write on “Convert Pitfalls” and how to avoid them. Being a convert himself, and having overcome so many spiritual obstacles, he was well-suited for this task. While his work on this specific text did not progress to completion, these notes of his give us simple and direct guidance to keep us on the narrow path.Fr. Seraphim's notes, starting at 01:25 :A) Trusting oneself, samost [in Russian].Remedy: sober distrust of oneself, taking counsel of others wiser, guidance from Holy Fathers.B) Academic approach — overly intellectual, uninvolved, uncommitted, abstract, unreal. Bound up with A. also.C) Not keeping the secret of the Kingdom, gossip, publicity. Overemphasis on outward side of mission, success. Danger of creating empty shell, form of mission without substance.Remedy: concentrate on spiritual life, keep out of limelight, stay uninvolved from passionate disputes.D) “Spiritual Experiences.”Symptoms: feverish excitement, always something “tremendous” happening — the blood is boiling. Inflated vocabulary, indicates puffed up instead of humble. Sources in Protestantism, and in one's own opinions “picked up” in the air.Remedy: sober distrust of oneself, constant grounding in Holy Fathers and Lives of Saints, counsel.E) Discouragement, giving up — “Quenched” syndrome.Cause: overemphasis on outward side, public opinion, etc.Remedy: emphasis on inward, spiritual struggle, lack of concern for outward success, mindfulness of Whom we are followers of (Christ crucified but triumphant).F) A double axe: broadness on one hand, narrowness on the other. This text comes from Father Seraphim Rose: His Life and Works by Hieromonk Damascene, published by St. Herman Press in Platina, California (pgs 847-848).This channel is dedicated to sharing the writings and lives of the Saints of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Sermon Recording Sermon OutlineSpeaker: Rev. Charles DrewSermon Series: SufferingIsaiah 58:1-12 (ESV) 1 "Cry aloud; do not hold back; lift up your voice like a trumpet; declare to my people their transgression, to the house of Jacob their sins. 2 Yet they seek me daily and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that did righteousness and did not forsake the judgment of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to God. 3 'Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?' Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers. 4 Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with a wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high. 5 Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the LORD? 6 "Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? 8 Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. 9 Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, 'Here I am.' If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, 10 if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. 11 And the LORD will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. 12 And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in.Sermon OutlineI) God hates heartless faithv. 1 "Cry aloud; do not hold back; lift up your voice like a trumpet; declare to my people their transgression, to the house of Jacob their sins. Representative John Lewis: There is “something in the very essence of anguish that is liberating, cleansing, redemptive.” Our Hope:By his Spirit Jesus is making our bones strong; he is making us like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.• “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water'” (John 7:38)Take away: Lift one yoke this week. “Come to me, all who are weary and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart. And you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11).Prayer of ConfessionGod our Liberator, you have freed us from the guilt and power of sin. And you will one day free us from every other yoke as well—from every institution, every cultural influence, and every person that stands in the way of the nobility and fullness you intend for us. You delight when we celebrate our freedom by extending it to other people—when we forgive, when we help out, and when we fight injustice. You grieve and grow angry when we misrepresent you by withdrawing into ourselves. We confess our uneven response to your grace. We are sorry for those times when our Bible study, prayer and worship have been fervent while we have persisted in anger towards each other and indifference towards the needs of our neighbors. We are sorry for paying too little attention to those moments when you have put your finger on injustice and callousness in our hearts. We are sorry for those times when we have expressed sorrow but haven’t really changed. How greatly we need your Spirit’s help: we need his help to be honest, we need his help to fear your anger, and we need his help to change. Come Lord, and renew us. Make us into well-watered gardens, sources of deep refreshment to friends and enemies alike. Make us a delight to you. We pray in the name of Jesus who has borne our sins. Amen.Questions for ReflectionAccording to verses 2-3 and 5 Israel was very active in her religious practices (take a moment to itemize them). Nevertheless, according to v. 1, God was grief-stricken and furious with them. Why? Reflect on the following: “It is easy, perhaps, to sit in judgment of those “good Christian” southern planters and northern industrialists whose slavery practices broke the heart and raised the fury of God. But before we do, we should examine ourselves: Do we consistently treat people the way God wants us to treat them? Do we hate to see people dehumanized, whoever they are—even people whose political choices we abhor and whose life-styles we find incomprehensible—even people who have personally wounded us—anonymous people on the internet? Do we hate to see people exploited and hurt, by whatever means—whether by greedy bosses or market forces or by climate change? Do we find intolerable and strive to overturn workplaces where efficiency dwarfs every other value?”Read Isaiah 58:6-7, where we discover how deeply God loves faith that spills over into care and social justice. Try to recall a recent occasion where your faith or the faith of a friend showed itself in this way—on the home front or in the work environment or in the neighborhood. How do you cope with the discrepancy between what God wants in Isaiah 58 and how you live? When we reflect on Isaiah 58 as a description of the life and destiny of Jesus, we encounter a startling irony. Jesus far surpasses us in living up to “the fast that God chooses” (think of his life and ministry in the light of vv. 6-7, 9-10); and yet Jesus experienced none of the blessings promised in Isaiah 58 (see vv. 8-9). There is a reason for this. Jesus came to lift off of our shoulders the yoke of sin by offering his lovely life in substitute for our hypocritical and self-centered ones. He was denied the blessings so that we might have them. Spend a few moments thanking him for lifting the yoke of your sin and guilt off your shoulders. According to v. 11, we experience God’s refreshment (we become “like a watered garden, like a spring of water”) when, with the help of Christ, we begin lifting the burdens off our neighbors’ backs. Representative John Lewis, a follower of Jesus and a founder in the civil rights movement who endured much violence for his quiet determination to lift the yoke of racism in our country, tasted this refreshment, writing, “there is something in the very essence of the anguish of redemptive suffering that is liberating, cleansing, redemptive.”Have you tasted this?

你有没有感觉市场上的很多新生产品有时候其实都差不多呢?或者某些你很爱吃的甜点你朋友觉得其实味道都差不多?这个习语其实和土豆有点关系,我们来看看为什么吧!C: Hi guys. I'm Chris. J: And I'm Joy. Our idiom for today is: potato potato and tomato tomato. It means that some things may seem different but they are actually the same thing. You can use it to express when you think the differences about something don't matter. C: This is a pretty interesting idiom. So potato(potayto) and tomato(tomayto) is how Americans pronounce it. While potato(potahto) and tomato(tomahto) is usually how British people would say it. The two kinds of pronunciations sound different but it's still the same word with the same meaning. So you can use this to talk about two newly released phones. Your friend may think that these two phones are different. But you think they might look different but the functions are the same. So you can say: potayto potahto or tomayto tomahto. OK, now we are gonna use it in a conversation: J: Did you have lunch yet Johnny? C: Not yet. I'm still debating whether to go to the Chinese hotpot or the Japanese hotpot. J: Eh, potato potato. To me they are both hotpot. C: To be honest, I think the new cars nowadays are all tomato tomato. They are like the same egg just with different shells. Don't you think? J: Yeah, but the prices can be pretty different sometimes. Anyway, if you like listening to us, remember to share it with people you know! Talk to you next time! Bye!

As I have been exploring the Power Platform, I continue to make new discoveries every day. I am not a developer, but I have developers on my team. Lately, I am noticing that we are pulling them into projects much less often than in the recent past. I wonder what the future-state of this will be... Power Platform We are in that fuzzy time, between something "new and significant" being launched, and the world understanding what it is, and what it means. Many customers are still saying things like, "I don't want this new Power Platform, I want Dynamics 365". Of course, Dynamics 365 runs on top of this "new" Power Platform. While confusion remains, I have covered this in other posts, so the "confused" obviously have not read them. For this post, I am more interested in the Developer's Dilemma. What is a Citizen? Lately, Microsoft has been using the term "Citizen Developer"... a lot. To listen, you would think that any boob could build an enterprise grade application in an hour. That may be the case in the future, but we are not quite there yet. However, we are at a point where a technically inclined, non-developer, who understands their business, can indeed get quite far, all the while thinking that C# is either a musical note, or some kind of cheese. So what is the current, and future role of that hard-core developer in this equation? Deep Water Even though more apps are now being built by non-developers, most of them will hit some deep water at some point. That deep water is about a mile further out than it was just two years ago, but eventually they will reach it and either settle, or engage a developer to help paddle through it. But they got a mile further before having to do so! That's a mile of work that previously would have kept a developer busy... and the deep water line continues to move out. The End of C#? Not anytime soon, but I can see the need for advanced C# developers fading over time. On most partners' benches, these are among the highest paid resources. It is because of this, that the off-shore industry was born. But as the need diminishes, and the opportunities become scarcer, rates will come down, and never go back up again. This spells long term trouble for both on-shore and off-shore companies focused on deep development. Automated Code I was chatting with my good friend and fellow MVP, Mark Smith (aka @nz365guy) the other day. Mark has been around development for decades. He suggested that all code is logical. At the end of the day, all code results in 1s and 0s. It's not emotional, it's not creative. Mark feels that in the not-too-distant future, code will be written by AI. I can't come up with a single reason to disagree. What replaces C# Skills? So, if the world continues to grow... a given, and platforms like the Power Platform continue to evolve in the direction they are... another given, what skills will be needed? Whenever I have looked at complex things built by coders, one thing always stands out to me: it's some ugly shit. In a world where UI/UX trumps functionality, the world that we have been living in for some time now, it seems the future needs are clear. Business Analysts and Front-end Developers will be the coveted skills. BTW, Mark is with me on that one. Javascript, HTML and CSS The tools of the Front-end developer trade, are currently the tools that will become even higher in demand than they are today. I'm not saying that we won't need that occasional bit of complex code to accomplish some thing, but that box keeps shrinking. Far more important to me, and customers, is the UI/UX we engage with. We don't really care, or appreciate, what goes on behind it. Just like everything else, UI/UX tools will continue to evolve also, and at some point that skill set may be in jeopardy also. Rise of the BA If you abstract out the developers, both front-end and back-end, what is left is the business logic and process. I have always found developers to be lousy analysts, they work with the other side of the brain. But those people who are able to dissect a business, really imagine all of the components of it floating in the air, see how they connect, see where they fail and can improve, from the front all the way to the back... they will be the kings. And they won't need to know a lick of code. Of course the Business Analysts I have known, are not UI/UX capable, they take more of an "I'll know it when I see it" approach, rather than a "Here's what it should look like". Couple a good analyst, with a good front-end developer, and you can rule the world Who sees this? Microsoft sees it.  So do the other major players, but Microsoft has a unique set of assets to actually seize upon this. The "Power Platform" is the tool-set that is rapidly evolving to fulfill this exact scenario. I don't know if Microsoft actually coined the term "Citizen Developer", but they have taken ownership of it, just like they did with "Cloud", which contrary to what you might hear, Microsoft did not invent. But unlike Cloud, this time they are not late to the party... they are right on time.

节目组: The World Says 世界说 节目名称: The relationship between mobile phone addiction and loneliness 手机孤独症开头曲:for youJ: Hello everybody, welcome to the world says from the VOE foreign language station, this is Jotta.V: I'm Vincent.(低沉音)C: I'm ....Oh,wait a minute.. I've just received a message, let me check...OK ..Hi, everyone, I'm Cherry.J: How was your weekend, Vincent? Your voice seems a little weird.V: Well, not great - I hadn't got anything planned, so I didn't see anyone for two days. And to be honest, I felt very lonely! There was a real physical feeling in the pit of my stomach.J: Poor Vincent! You do sound really down in the dumps. Well, the subject of today's show is the relationship between mobile phone addiction and loneliness. C:And lonelinessis sometimes described as a social pain - a pain that tells us that we're isolated- or lacking contact with others - which motivates us to seek out companionship.eh...You guys go on for more, I'll do with some of my things first on my phone.V: All right..Jotta,how does being sociable help us, as a species, then?J: It's all about cooperation- or working together to get something done - for example, finding food.V: Well, I suppose I cooperyated with the pizza delivery guy for a shared outcome.J: You paid him and he gave you the pizza?V: Exactly. J: But it wasn't a socially enriching experience.C: emm ..yeah.. It isn't easy to meet people you really like - so often you might as well just on your own.J: Finish texting?C: Not yet..I just can't help saying it. Because I'm suffering from the loneliness.V: No wonder you keep chatting on QQ.J: While in some situations being lonely may be a good thing, because it encourages you to be sociable, in other situations it may be useful to tolerate- or put up with - loneliness.V: That's a good point.C: Does all the tweeting, messaging, and chatting online that we do make us lonelier, because we're getting out less and meeting fewer people? Or do virtual connections stop us from feeling lonely?J: Those are good questions. 插曲:RiversideV:Sociologist Eric had ever talked about it: We just don't have great research showing that we are significantly more lonely or isolated today than we were ten or twenty or thirty years ago.J: That means critics who say that Facebook or the internet or whatever device you carry with you, is making you lonelier and more miserable - they just don't have that much evidence to back it up.C: So there isn't enough evidence to back up- or support - the claim that social media is making us feel lonelier.V: No, there isn't.J: But did you know that loneliness is contagious?V: You mean you can catch it from somebody like a cold?J: Yes. There are environmental factors involved in loneliness too. For example, if somebody you talk to every day is always unfriendly towards you, this makes you statistically more likely to be negative in your interactions with somebody else.V: Well, let's try and stay friendly towards each other. oh, Cherry, what are you doing ?It's work time now.C: I see. Hang on a minute. I just need to tweet something and… Done!V: I suppose social media has had quite a big impact on our life. What do you think, Jotta?....eh... Jotta?J: Hey, I'm here. Just replied a message...sorry...C: Well… interrupting conversations to check your phone has become a social norm, hasn't it, Jotta?V: I don't agree. Social norms are the rules of behaviour considered acceptable in a group or society. C: I didn't mean to ask you.J: Well,...emm...I do get wound up about people constantly checkving their devices. C:Professor Sherry Turkle of Massachusetts Institute of Technology also have got some opinions about social norms amongst students. He interviewed hundreds of college students and what they talked about was what some of them called 'the rule of three'. J: And what is “the rule of three”?C:That is...if you go to dinner with friends, you don't want to look down at your phone until you see that three people, let's say you're six at dinner, are looking up in the conversation. So there's a new etiquette where you don't look down unless three people are looking up kind of to keep a little conversation alive. J:I got it.V: Yesterday, I was in a café and two girls came in. They sat down and started chatting away – but not to each other – they were tapping away at their devices. And there was no face-to-face conversation at all! C: But you can have moments of connection using your devices, you know? If you have a connection with someone you engage emotionally. V: And physiologically we're changing, that almost the neck muscles are tipped over to look down. But it isn't only muscles that might change as a result of our techie habits 使用手机不仅使我们的肌肉发生改变,– it's the way we interact – or engage with each other too. 同时也改变了我们互动的方式,也就是彼此交流的方式。 J: Yeap.Let me sum up today's show. First, there isn't enough evidence to support the claim that social media is making us feel lonelier. Then,孤独感是会传染的, let's try and stay friendly towards each other. The last point, mobile phone addiction do harm to people.插曲:Gotta Have YouC:Okay. It's time to say goodbye again.
