Genesis 28:10-22Jacob and Esau, twin sons of Isaac, struggled for dominance even from thewomb, but it was Jacob, who by deceptive means, steals the firstborn birthright from Esau, with their mother's help: What a soap opera story(See Genesis 27). Jacob, whose name means “Deceiver or supplanter” is then forced to escape to Haran the birthplace of his grandfather Abraham. It was during this fleeing for sin committed that God manifests His grace via a supernatural dream, in a most unexpected place: a “certain(ordinary desert) place”(28:10). Jacob was not described as seeking God, or praying, lamenting to God, asking for forgiveness, he was just escaping a bad situation he and his mother caused. He was not looking for a calling from God but only to survive Esau's wrath.. Here in a nondescript place, with no religious significance, no sacred altars around (Compare to Isaiah's call while in the temple Isaiah 6:1-13) God encounters Jacob: a Theophany. In fact as stated in Romans 8:28, God worked all that happens for His purposes and the benefit of Jacob. Jacob's unbeknownst to the other characters in this narrative, was chosen by God, not Esau, to be the last patriarch father to the future 12 tribes of Israel(See also Romans 9:13 “Jacob I loved, I chose for aparticular service, Esau I hated = I preferred Jacob) Why? Since his name means “Deceiver, supplanter”, None of our business, Godis sovereign! What can we learn from this story?I) God came in a context of duplicity: no goodness here (See Genesis 27) Toattract God's Involvement. But God in many ways intervenes where He is not called upon because He is Sovereign. Circumstances don't have to be perfect for Him to intervene: (John 3:16; Romans 5:8 etc)II) God came unexpectedly in a very ordinary place: during a rest-stage(28:10-11); “Just a certain place”, but in God's chosen time and manner. There were no altars around or during a prayer meeting etc. And there was nothing that Jacob did to prepare or to earn this revelation.III) God came in a special revelation via the use of dream but not any ordinarydream but a revelatory dream with a message: In 28:12 The text presents what Jacob saw and what the Lord said 28:13-15. A vision for Jacob in his present situation and beyond his time. This was only the beginning of his transformation, finalized by a 2nd theophany in chapter 32, where he wrestles with God and as a result his name waschanged, from Jacob to Israel (he struggled with God and was transformed: but noperfect IV) God came, his transformation process begins 28:16-22God came sovereignly, Jacob was unaware that He was in that place(28:16)A new fear and awe for the Lord verse 17He commits himself with a vow verse 19He prays to return victories to his father's house, after his journey, and hedoes (Chapter 32) But all of the above was not without hardship and wrestling with God.Amen

Wat maakt iemand een goede leider? En waarom hebben we eigenlijk leiders nodig? De Bijbel staat vol met leiders: koningen, priesters, rechters, herders en oudsten. Maar het gaat vaak net even anders dan je denkt. Of héél anders.

In deze wereld lijkt het bijna een natuurwet: the winner takes it all. What Defines Moral Behavior? (Part II) God-Given Direction

Morality can be a tricky thing. For the most part, humans do want to behave in a moral fashion. The tricky thing is figuring out how to actually define what qualifies as "moral behavior" and what does not. As Christians, this task of defining is supposed to be easier than for most, because we have God's word as our clear foundation for our moral principles. I say "it's supposed to be easier" because Christianity has demonstrated for thousands of years that claiming the name of Christ is far from a guarantee of moral behavior. So, what are we supposed to do with this? How do we take what God has clearly given us in His word and live it daily? How do we handle it when fellow Christians see aspects of God's moral principles in a different light that we do?

Section II: God We believe in one triune God, existing in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit; co-eternal in being, co-identical in nature, co-equal in power and glory, Who possess the same attributes and perfections yet carry out distinct offices (Deuteronomy 6:4, II Corinthians 13:14, I Peter 1:2, Matthew 28:19). We believe that God the Father is the absolute omnipotent ruler of the universe, sovereign in creation, providence, and redemption, a perfect Spirit in Whom is perfect holiness, and infinite wisdom (Psalm 99:6; 103:19, 139:7-12, 147:5, Isaiah 44:24, Malachi 3:6, Matthew 7:7-8, John 4:24, I John 4:8, Romans 11:36). We believe that Jesus Christ is the divine (John 1:1, 10:30, 38, Colossians 2:9), eternal (John 1:2), Son of God (Matthew 3:17, 8:29, 11:27, 16:16, 17:5, Mark 1:1, I John 5:9-12), that He was miraculously conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary (Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:18-23, Luke 1:34-35, Galatians 4:4), that He perfectly revealed and accomplished the will of God, taking upon Himself the demands and necessities of human nature (Philippians 2:5-8); that He identified Himself completely with mankind (John 1:14, Romans 1:3-4) yet was and remains without sin (I Peter 2:21-23, Hebrews 4:15), that He literally and vicariously died, was buried and raised from the dead (Romans 6:4, 9, I Corinthians 15:4, 20, I Thessalonians 1:10), and that He ascended to heaven (Acts 1:9), and is now exalted at the right hand of God, where, as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry of Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate (Romans 8:34, Hebrews 9:24, I John 2:1-2). We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine Person, that He convicts the world of sin (John 16:8-11), helps (John 14:16-17, 26) and baptizes all believers into the body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:12-14). We believe that He is the divine Teacher (John 14:26, I John 2:27) who guides believers into truth (John 16:13), and that it is the privilege and duty of all the saved to be filled and controlled by the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18, I John 2:20). PURPOSE: A Doctrinal Series for Heritage Bible Chapel's Sunday School, under the premise that it is vital to review and teach through our Statement of Faith (Doctrine Essentials) with some regularity to avoid “theological amnesia and spiritual myopia.” The subjects are taught using a scripture-first approach to feature highlights of our confession in a 30-minute teaching setting. Teachers are encouraged to focus on main points, work in discussion and application as appropriate, and supplement with HBC's Constitution, church history, and other resources. Care must be given to isolate the main points due to time constraints. LOCATION & TIME: This class will be located in the Sanctuary. Attendees are encouraged to begin arriving at 9:00 a.m. Teaching will start by 9:10 a.m.

Today, we will begin by looking at our need for love. 1. Our Need to Be Loved One of the deepest needs of our hearts is to be loved by others. Not only do we want to be loved, but we want also for others to make that love known to us. 2. Our Need for God's Love An even deeper need is to be loved by God and to see a demonstration of His love. We must realize that even when others do not love us, God intensely loves us. My desire is to show you that the love we all need is found in God's love for us. I) God's Expressed Love God demonstrated His love for us. 1) The God who Loves Who is this God who loves us? We believe in the Triune God. God is One God, but He has three Persons. He is God, the Father, God, the Son and God, the Holy Spirit. There was, is, and ever will be perfect love and fellowship within the Trinity. We can build a relationship with Him, but that interactive relationship requires the giving and receiving of love. 2) The Evidence of God's Love When we think about it, we see much evidence of God's love for us. We see the love of God in all aspects of life. a) Nature b) Achievements c) Actions The love of God for us stands out in the actions of people who love us and the rest of God's creation. 1 John 4:19 3) God's Ultimate Show of Love Many have asked, “Why did Christ have to die?” “Could not God have forgiven our sins and redeemed us in some other way? The answer to both questions is clearly “No.” God loves us, but He is also just. Only Christ was sinless. Only He was a worthy sacrifice for our sins. If another plan would have worked, God the Father so love God the Son that He would have chosen the other plan. We could only be forgiven and redeemed if God loved us enough to give His Son. II) God's Gracious Love Christ died for us as ungodly people not as godly people. If we had been righteous, He would not have died for us. 1) Because None are Righteous We were born with a tendency to sin. Therefore, as we begin thinking about God's love, we have to admit that we are not claiming the right to be loved, but we are calling upon God in His mercy to love us. 2) Because God Is Gracious In contrast to the bad news, the good news is that God the Father graciously loves us. God overcame the bad news with the good news of the gift of His Son who paid the penalty for our sins. III) Christ's Sacrificial Love The love of God, through Christ, is a sacrificial love. It is higher than any other love for us. 1) A Display of Love Jesus understood that dying for someone else was the supreme sacrifice. (John 15:13) It was the ultimate display of love. Jesus is the ultimate hero for His display of love. 2) An Expression of Love The love of Christ for us is an exalted love. Now, we should note how exalted is the expression of the love of Christ. Christ went beyond dying for a good man and died for sinners. His love for the ungodly is unequaled. He laid down His life for them. In Closing: Allow me to make this very personal. Christ loves you personally and individually. St. Augustine said, “He loves each one of us, as if there were only one of us.” He died for you. If you had been the only sinner, He still would have died for you. "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players..." What does it mean to embrace your calling in the performing arts, and where does God exist in the midst of it? This week, Elliott sits down with Luis Tirado. Luis has been a part of the church since the beginning. He was part of the original Bridge leadership team, serving our youth, and today he is a full-time employee of Christ Fellowship and the church's Production Director. He is directly responsible for everything you see and hear on Sunday mornings during our worship service as well as for all aspects of the church's performing arts work. Luis shares about how he first got invovled with performing arts in a church play as a child and how the love he found in it was developed in middle and high school, eventually leading to formal training in New York. We learn what he was up to while he as away from the church for a few years getting his education and how he came back to Christ Fellowship to start Connection Productions. Elliott and Luis discuss the creative process, how to draw out the best in others, and reminisce about the long list of productions that the church has put on through Connection Productions.
