Lucentio and Bianca hurry to meet the priest Biondello bribed to perform the marriage. Gremio greets Petruchio, Katherine, Grumio and the real Vincentio at Lucentio's house, where they are met by the Merchant, who insists that he's Lucentio's father. Vincentio challenges him and chaos ensues as Tranio tries desperately to keep up the ruse. The newlyweds finally arrive and seeing no way out, they confess their gambit and beg forgiveness from their fathers. Once all is sorted out, Katherine confronts her father and forces him to reckon with his poor treatment of her. Later, the three newlywed couples (Katherine and Petruchio, Lucentio and Bianca, and Hortension and “The Widow”) celebrate their unions. Bianca and Lucentio are already off to a rocky start as they squabble over how much she's allowed to eat. Hortensio realizes he may not live long as the widow's fourth husband. Seeing he has no chance against Lucentio (AKA “Cambio”), Hortensio drops his “Licio” disguise and swears off women. Biondello, meanwhile, has found an old merchant who will pretend to be Lucentio's father, Vincenzio, so that Lucentio can marry Bianca without getting his real father's permission. Meanwhile, Katherine wakes in the comfort of Petruchio's home and is further smitten as he describes the goings-on at his farm. Later, Baptista gets all rights to Vinzentio's property from the man he thinks is Lucentio's father but is really the old and very agreeable merchant. Hortensio goes to Petrucio's house and is greeted by Grumio. As they rush to attend Bianca's hasty marriage they're interrupted by the arrival of an old gentleman who's lost his way trying to find his son. It doesn't take long for everyone to realize the gentleman is none other than Vincenzio, Lucentio's real father. Incensed to learn that his son is being married without his consent, he joins Petruchio, Katherine, Grumio and Hortensio on their way to the wedding. Katherine reluctantly goes to church to be married, only to learn through an elaborate pantomime performed by Grumio and Biondello that Petruchio is running late. Finally, a drunk priest arrives with Petruchio, who is dressed as a gondolier. They make a mockery of the wedding but a humiliated Katherine is nonetheless sent off with her new husband by her clueless father, who reminisces fondly about young love. The newlyweds eventually arrive at Petruchio's frigid home in the pouring rain, where he tells her that he lives selflessly in poverty with seven penitents who share his bed and follow elaborate rituals before eating. Katherine nearly goes mad with hunger as Petruchio demands that they follow every step of the ritual before dining on the food delivered by the kitchen mistress, Dorcas. At last, Katherine realizes it's all a joke and she devours her food with joy and laughter. Once sated, she tells Petruchio she's going upstairs to get ready to lose her virginity to him, but Petruchio tells her he has no intention of making love to her until she is well rested and truly wants to be with him. It only makes Katherine more attracted to him, but Petruchio insists that she get a good night's sleep as he privately confesses to feeling the rekindling of his long dormant passion. Petruchio negotiates with Baptista for Katherine's hand until Licio emerges from his tutoring session bruised and battered. It only strengthens Petruchio's resolve to woo Katherine and when she arrives, the two engage in a spirited match of wits. Katherine reluctantly agrees to go with Petruchio when he tells her that her father has agreed to marry her off to him. Gremio and Tranio (as Lucentio) immediately try to out-do each other in their bid for Bianca's hand, with Baptista as auctioneer. Tranio wins the contest and is promised Bianca's hand in marriage provided his father (Vincentio the tomato king) comes to the wedding in person. Tranio privately conspires to find a look-alike to pretend to be Vincentio. Meanwhile, Hortensio (still pretending to be Licio the Banjo Tutor) tries to woo Bianca with his instrument until Lucentio (as Cambio the Latin Tutor) interrupts and sends him away. He confesses his love to Bianca, who secretly invites him to her chamber after lunch. Hortensio returns and tries again with Bianca, failing miserably. Petruchio tells Hortensio he's come to Padua to find a partner to give him renewed life after grieving the loss of his first wife. Hortensio tells him about Baptista's daughter, Katherine, but warns him that she's quite the shrew. Petruchio realizes he knows her father and is not put off. Hortensio agrees to provide an introduction if, in exchange, Petruchio presents him to Signior Baptista as a tutor for the object of his affection: Bianca. As they agree to the deal, Grumio announces the arrival of two other rivals vying for Bianca: Gremio and Lucentio, now disguised as Cambio. Hortensio introduces them to Petruchio and tells them of his intentions with Katherine, who once coupled will make Bianca available for marriage. Meanwhile, Katherine laments her isolation in her chamber at Baptista's house. She impulsively frees her sister's canaries from their cage to find the freedom she craves. When Bianca enters and sees what Katherine's done, the two fight savagely until Signor Baptista arrives to break it up. He sends Bianca away and scolds Katherine, lamenting his struggles as a single father until he hears the arrival of Gremio, Grumio, Tranio (as Lucentio), Lucentio (as Cambio), Hortensio (as Licio) and Petruchio. Petruchio tells Baptista of his lineage and his desire to woo Katherine. Baptista says she'll never agree but Petruchio persists, introducing Hortensio (as “Licio”), who he says will make inroads as her banjo tutor. The others go to great lengths to outdo each other as they compete for Bianca. Gremio presents a Latin tutor (Lucentio-as-Cambio) and Tranio-as-Lucentio claims to be the son of Vincentio, “the Tomato King”. Baptista welcomes them all to his house and wishes them luck with his daughters. The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “SHREW!”, was written by AMY FREED and directed by ART MANKE. We meet Lucentio and Tranio, who are visiting Padua. Strolling through the university, Lucentio is immediately smitten by Katherine's sister, Bianca, an airhead who loves being in a man's world. He conspires with Tranio to disguise himself as a tutor in order to gain access to Bianca by way of instruction. Phebe confronts Rosalind (“Johnnyseed”) for being rude, leading Sylvius, Phebe, Orlando and Rosalind to expound on the meaning of love as a thunderstorm descends. Rosalind ends their railing by telling them to meet again tomorrow for a wedding where they will all be married to the one they love. Touchstone and Audrey celebrate as two musicians from Duke Senior's camp pass by. Touchstone asks them to sing a song, which they do to great fanfare, but he gets jealous and mocks their music when they express interest in Audrey. Jacques returns to Duke Senior's camp to discover that someone killed a deer. He suggests they present it to Duke Senior as an offering and asks Amiens to sing a song to mark the occasion. Back at the farm, Silivius delivers Phebe's letter to “Johnnyseed”. Seeing it's full of praise for Johnnyseed, Rosalind scolds Silvius for loving a woman who treats him so badly. S/he sends him back to Phebe with the message that Phebe should love Silvius. As Silvius is leaving, Orlando's brother Oliver enters, transformed. He tells Rosalind and Celia that Orlando defended him from an attack by a lioness and presents a bloody handkerchief that had bandaged Orlando's wounded arm. Rosalind faints at the sight of the blood and scrambles to resume her disguise when Oliver questions her manliness,. Back at Filippini Pond, Touchstone and Audrey are skinny dipping with throngs of other concertgoers when Audrey's suitor, a local farmhand named William, shows up. Touchstone chases him out of the water with a barrage of questions to challenge his wit before Corin arrives to tell Touchstone that Johnnyseed and Anne Emma Grant would like to see him. Later, Oliver confesses to his brother that he's fallen in love with Anne Emma Grant. He gives Orlando his inheritance and vows to live and die in the country as a shepherd. When Rosalind (“Johnnyseed”) enters, Oliver leaves. Orlando spills his heart out to Johnnyseed, saying that Oliver and Anne's love has made him yearn even more for Rosalind and he can no longer keep on pretending. Celia tries to comfort Rosalind when Orlando doesn't show up at the cottage for his first coaching. Corin arrives to invite them to spy on Silvius courting the reluctant Phoebe. Rosalind, still dressed as Ganymede, follows and confronts Phoebe when she sees how poorly she treats Silvius, but it backfires when Phoebe falls for her instead. Rosalind beats a hasty retreat with Celia. Phoebe tells Silvius she's going to write “Ganymede” a love letter for him to deliver. Back in the forest, Rosalind teases Jacques about his melancholy until Orlando finally arrives. Jacques leaves and Rosalind (Ganymede) berates Orlando for being late to his tutoring session. Ganymede (Rosalind) convinces Celia to stage a fake wedding between Ganymede and Orlando in order to make Rosalind jealous. Orlando isn't sure about this and leaves to have dinner with Duke Senior. Celia scolds Rosalind for misrepresenting women, but Rosalind can only respond that she's fallen deeply in love. Celia tells Rosalind that Orlando is the poet whose writing has so delighted them. When they hear Orlando approaching in argument with Jacques about love, they hide to eavesdrop. Once Jacques leaves, Rosalind steps out and introduces herself as “Johnnyseed”. She promises to cure Orlando of his lovesickness provided he agrees to pretend that she's Rosalind and comes every day to practice wooing him. Orlando happily agrees. Back at the concert, Touchstone and Audrey make their way through the crowd with her goats, trailed by Jacques. Audrey tries to keep up with Touchstone's wit until they come across Sir Oliver Martext, who Touchstone asks to marry them. Jacques is enraptured by Amiens' music and begs for more. Meanwhile, Orlando leaves the elderly and exhausted Adam to find food for them to eat. Later in the day, Duke Senior comes upon Jacques, who is elated by his conversation with a fool he met in the forest (Touchstone). As they sit down to eat with their entourage, Orlando enters, sword drawn, and orders them to give him food. Duke Senior soothes him and welcomes him to their feast. Orlando apologizes for his rude behavior and goes to get Adam. Jacques describes how all the world's a stage. Orlando re-enters with Adam and they all dine together. As Amiens sings another song, Orlando describes his saga to Duke Senior, who replies that she knew and loved Orlando's father, and wants to hear more. Back at the Court, Duke Frederick berates Oliver for failing to kill Orlando. He seizes Oliver's land and property, ordering him to find his brother and bring him back within a week or be banished from the realm forever. Back in the forest of Arden (or Woodstock), Orlando hangs poems to Rosalind on the trees and gives them to everyone he sees. Meanwhile, Corin and Touchstone debate the attributes of courtly and country life. They hear Rosalind (or “Johnnyseed”) reading Orlando's bad poetry. Touchstone steps forward to mock the poetry and is joined by Celia. They all laugh together. At dinner after the wrestling match, Celia marvels at how quickly Rosalind has fallen in love. They're interrupted by the angry Duke Frederick, who threatens his niece Rosalind with death for treason if she doesn't leave his court immediately. Celia defends Rosalind and vows to stay with her wherever she goes. Together, they plan to leave the city disguised as men. Rosalind will be known as “Johnnyseed" and Celia as “Anne Emma Grant”. They decide to bring the court jester, Touchstone, with them. Meanwhile, Duke Senior holds court in the forest with Woodstock concertgoers, philosophizing on the virtues of living in nature. When she hears that Jacques, another courtier-turned-philosopher, is in the forest mourning the killing of deer, she asks to be taken to him. Back at his Court, Duke Frederick berates his assistants for losing track of Celia and Rosallind and letting them escape. He demands that they bring Oliver and Charles the Wrestler to him. Back at Orlando's quarters, Adam tells him he must flee or die. He offers him all his savings and urges him to leave immediately. Orlando convinces Adam to accompany him in flight. Elsewhere, Rosalind, Celia and Touchstone trudge through the rain into the forest of Arden. There, they come upon two farmhands, Silvius and Corin, and overhear Silvius asking for advice as he pines away for a young shepherdess named Phebe. Rosalind sympathizes with his plight as she pines for Orlando. Touchstone gets their attention to find out where they might be able to get food and lodging. When Corin tells them he can't help because his boss is selling his farm, Rosalind offers to buy the farm and all its property in exchange for his services. Orlando tells his trusted old servant, Adam, how much it grieves him that his brother Oliver keeps him from their father's inheritance. Oliver enters and provokes Orlando into attacking him, then relents and agrees to give Orlando part of what's due to him. After Orlando and Adam depart, Oliver meets privately with the champion wrestler, Charles, and encourages him to break his brother's neck at their upcoming match. On the day of the match, Duke Frederick's daughter, Celia, arrives at Madison Square Garden with her cousin, the banished Duke Senior's daughter, Rosalind. They're joined by Touchstone, the jester. Once inside, the cousins are taken by the sight of Orlando, who they try to dissuade from wrestling with Charles. Orlando persists on his mission and beats all odds by defeating Charles. Duke Frederick is enraged and leaves the arena when he finds out the victor is the son of Sir Roland du Bois. Rosalind approaches Orlando and gives him a necklace. Orlando is smitten but can't bring himself to speak. When Duke Frederick's servant, Le Beau, tells him that Rosalind is the daughter of the banished Duke Senior, he vows to find her again. Romeo and Juliet reluctantly part ways at dawn before her mother enters to tell Juliet to prepare to marry Paris on Thursday. Juliet protests first to her mother and then to her father, who violently berates her for refusing to marry. Lady Capulet takes her husband's side and shames Juliet before departing, leaving her to beg the Nurse to intervene. The Nurse, however, advises Juliet to take Paris's hand and forget about Romeo. Juliet pretends to agree but secretly goes to Friar Laurence's cell, where she runs into Paris, who is seeking the Friar's services for their upcoming wedding. Juliet brushes off Paris's affection and after he departs, laments her woes, threatening to kill herself with a dagger she snatches from the Friar's chamber. The Friar consoles Juliet with a plan for her to drink a potion that will make it look like she is dead and that she will send word of the plan to Romeo. They will then free Juliet from the Montague tomb and together, Romeo and Juliet will escape to Mantua. Back at the Capulet home, the wedding preparations are well underway. Juliet returns and begs her father's forgiveness, then retires to her chamber where she dismisses her mother and Nurse before drinking the potion. The cast assembles at the recording studio to create the Play On podcast series, “Romeo and Juliet”. Two actors take on the roles of Sampson and Peter, members of the house of Capulet, as the rest of the cast pretend to be the people of Verona milling about in the streets. When Balthasar and Abraham show up from the House of Montague, Sampson and Peter pick a fight with them. Benvolio, a friend of the House of Montague, tries to break it up, but Tybalt, a firebrand from the House of Capulet, escalates the violence. The Prince arrives on the scene and finally ends the melee, warning the rival factions that if there's another brawl, they'll pay for it with their lives. In the aftermath, Lady Capulet asks Benvolio about her lovesick son, Romeo. Benvolio promises Lady Capulet he'll try to talk him out of his melancholy. Romeo appears, strumming his guitar, and confesses to Benvolio that his crush, Rosaline, has sworn to live a life of chastity as a nun. Benvolio tells Romeo to start looking for other women to woo, but Romeo says it will only remind him of his heartbreak. Back at Lord Capulet's house, Count Paris asks Juliet's father for her hand in marriage. Desdemona begs Iago to help her regain Othello's love as Emilia curses whoever it was that turned Othello against her. That evening, during a state dinner in the Vaulted Hall of the Citadel, Roderigo confronts Iago in frustration. Iago manages to convince Roderigo to corner Cassio and lure him into another fight. After the dinner, Othello says goodnight to his guests, then tells Desdemona to go to bed. Alone with Emilia, Desdemona finds some comfort and remembers a song from her childhood. Later, in the alleys near Famagusta's Central Piazza, Iago and Roderigo hide and wait for Cassio. Roderigo attacks him as he passes. They grapple as Iago stealthily leaps out and slices Cassio's leg nearly in half. Cassio calls out for help as he battles Roderigo, leaving him badly wounded. Othello hears Cassio's cries and quietly applauds Iago's fulfillment of his wish that Cassio be killed. Gratiano and Lodovico arrive on the scene as Iago quietly puts an end to Roderigo's misery. Bianca comes to Cassio's aid. Iago blames her for the ambush before making a public display of his sadness and dismay at seeing Roderigo lying dead. Emilia arrives and offers comfort to Iago before lashing out at Bianca for putting Cassio and her husband in danger. Back in their bedroom, later still, Othello approaches his sleeping wife and kisses her for the last time. Iago manipulates reality, tricking Othello into believing that he's seen proof of Desdemona's unfaithfulness, when in truth Iago planted the fateful handkerchief in Cassio's room and made it appear that Cassio's delight in the prostitute Bianca's love for him is really about Desdemona. Othello's rage at Desdemona spills over in public as Lodovico arrives in Cypress. Later, Othello confronts his wife in their bedroom and refuses to believe that she is innocent despite her heartfelt pleas. Iago's trap works out just as he planned: Roderigo lures the drunken Cassio into a fight that escalates into a brawl, injuring Montano as he and Iago struggle to break it up. Othello arrives and restores order. Iago dutifully and diplomatically reports the sequence of events leading to the brawl to Othello, who immediately expels Cassio from his post. Cassio, distraught, privately expresses his remorse to Iago, who encourages him to seek to restore his position through Desdemona. Cassio is persuaded by Iago's reassurances and arrives at the Citadel the next morning to visit with Desdemona. She receives his supplications with an open heart, promising to do everything she can to get Othello to restore his position of trust and service. Meanwhile, Iago, now Othello's closest advisor, quietly expresses his discomfort at seeing Cassio in Desdemona's company as they pass by. After hearing Desdemona's pleas on behalf of Cassio, Othello presses Iago to explain his misgivings. Iago craftily plants a seed of doubt in Othello's heart, cautioning him to beware of jealousy while encouraging him to keep an eye on Cassio, and on his wife. The Duke leaves it to Othello to decide whether or not to take Desdemona with him to Cypress. Othello puts her in Iagos' care for the journey, with Iago's wife Emilia at her service. Alone with Iago, Roderigo laments his heartbreak, threatening to kill himself in despair. Iago convinces him that Desdemona will eventually get tired of Othello and will be open to Roderigo's affections if he can be patient. Iago inwardly conspires to weave Cassio into his web in his plot to destroy Othello. Later, in Cypress, word arrives that the Turkish fleet has been vanquished thanks to Othello's leadership and to stormy seas. Cassio lands ashore and welcomes Iago, Emilia and Desdemona as they arrive. Othello soon lands with his soldiers and lovingly greets his wife. Once alone again, Iago tells Roderigo that Desdemona is in love with Cassio and that he should pick a fight with him in order to undermine Cassio's reputation, persuading him that without Cassio in the way, Roderigo's chances with Desdemona will be greatly improved. Inwardly, Iago vows to use Roderigo to get rid of Cassio entirely or drive Othello mad with jealousy. That evening, Othello leaves Cassio to guard the watch, urging him to keep a quiet guard as he retires to his chambers with Desdemona. Cassio asks Iago to keep him company. After the couple departs, Iago persuades Cassio to have a drink with him. Cassio protests but Iago convinces him that the rest of the soldiers crave a celebration. Cassio gives in and gets so drunk he can barely stand. As he stumbles away, Iago privately casts aspersions on Cassio's weak constitution to a ranking officer, setting the stage for his downfall. Chaos reigns on the battlefield of Agincourt, where Pistol encounters a French soldier and spares his life in exchange for his money, thanks to the assistance of the bilingual Boy who has trailed him from England. Fortune eventually turns against France, and Dauphin, Orleans, Bourbon and Constable mourn their fate. Henry learns of the death of the Duke of York, who led the vanguard against the French army, as Fluellen and Gower lament the slaughter of the children who were left to guard their luggage, including the Boy who had accompanied Pistol. Henry is enraged by their senseless deaths, vowing to finish the fight without mercy. Finally, Montjoy arrives to give word of France's surrender. As he celebrates with Fluellen, Henry spots Williams, the soldier he'd quarreled with while visiting his troops incognito the night before. Henry summons Williams and reveals himself as the adversary he vowed to fight. Williams is contrite, but Henry rewards his pluck and valor with a glove full of coins. Late at night, Henry meanders among his troops incognito, gauging their loyalty and morale while absolving himself of any guilt over their fate. Along the way, he gets into a squabble with Williams and vows to meet with him to settle matters once and for all when the battle is over. As dawn approaches, the French nobles (Dauphin, Constable and Orleans) get in their saddles, swaggering with confidence. Henry, meanwhile, rallies his troops with one of the most famous speeches ever written. Outside the French village of Corbie, Gower and Fluellen meet a fiery Pistol, who asks Fluellen to beg leniency from Exeter on behalf of Bardolph, who has been sentenced to death for stealing from a church. Fluellen refuses and Pistol storms off, enraged. King Henry arrives to learn that the English have kept control of a strategically valuable bridge. He also learns of the death of his old friend Bardolph, and promises that all such offenders will get the same punishment. Soon after, a French Ambassador, Montjoy, arrives to deliver a warning to King Henry from the King of France: Turn back now or die. Henry responds that he will march on, and if they try to stop him, he'll soak the ground with French blood. Later that night, in the French camp outside Agincourt, Constable, Bourbon and Orleans tease the Dauphin about his love for his horse, and joke about him after he leaves. A messenger arrives to tell them the English are lurking very near their tents, but they shrug off the threat, confident of their strength and numbers. Only Bourbon expresses any sense of foreboding. The Chorus describes Henry visiting his soldiers at their tents and lookouts, boosting their morale. Later, as he sits with his thoughts, feeling optimistic about what lies ahead, Henry is surprised by the sudden appearance of Pistol. Henry rejects France's overtures and arrives on French soil, seizing the town of Harfleur. Meanwhile, his old drinking buddies (Nym, Bardolph and Pistol) argue over whether to join the fight as the British, Scottish and Welsh captains of war (Jamy, Macmorris and Fluellen) squabble over strategy. The Governor of Harfleur finally admits defeat in the face of Henry's relentless aggression as the French nobles (Dauphin, Bourbon and Constable) remain confident in their numbers and the Princess (Katharine) learns to speak the strange and laughable language of English with her Lady-in-Waiting (Alice). King Henry's friends from his wilder days, Bardolph, Nym and Pistol, gather at the London Boarding House of Pistol's new bride, Nell, who had been engaged to Nym. Pistol and Nym argue and fight until they are interrupted by a young Boy who breaks the news that their great friend, Sir John Falstaff, is gravely ill and needs their help. In Southampton, Henry discovers that three of his closest friends and advisors, Lord Scroop of Masham, Richard Earl of Cambridge and Thomas Grey, Knight of Northumberland, have committed treason by conspiring against him with the King of France. He has them executed at once. Back at Nell's Boarding House, the Hostess (Nell), Pistol, Bardolph, Nym and the Boy mourn the death of Falstaff, then depart to join King Henry's army. King Charles the Beloved of France, meanwhile, sensing that Henry is not to be trifled with, expresses his unease over England's imminent invasion. As his court nonchalantly watches a jousting tournament, the King of France berates his son, the Dauphin, for underestimating the power of England, and instructs his princes to arm themselves in preparation for war. With the recent death of his father, King Henry IV, the young Henry V must live down his wild past and prove himself capable of ruling a restless kingdom. With the encouragement of his advisors, Lords Canterbury and Ely, Henry advances a dubious claim to the throne of France based on his ancestry and on a questionable interpretation of arcane land laws. The Prince of France, known as the Dauphin, responds to Henry's claim by sending him a treasure chest full of tennis balls. Henry, furious, tells his troops and nobles to prepare for war. Kent reunites with Cordelia at the Highland Hospital in Oakland, where with a doctor they witness King Lear's awakening and recognition of his youngest daughter. Meanwhile, at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, Regan confesses to Edmund that she fears he is not loyal only to her, but also to her sister. Edmund tries to reassure her, but he is interrupted by Goneril and Albany, who arrive to negotiate on how to proceed with their battle plans. Once Goneril, Regan and Edmund are gone, Edgar slips in, disguised, and delivers a message to Albany to summon him upon their victory. Elsewhere, Edmund takes a moment to contemplate his future, vowing to win the battle and dispense with Albany when the time comes. Later, on Market Street in The Warfield, Edgar finds a place for Gloucester to take refuge as the battle rages. Once he learns that Lear's forces have been defeated, he encourages his father not to lose hope and together, they flee to another refuge. In the Fillmore Auditorium in The Cow Palace, Edmund savors his victory as Lear and Cordelia comfort each other in shackles. Edmund sends them to prison and instructs an army captain to follow his command concerning their fate. Albany arrives to challenge Edmund's authority in dealing with the prisoners, leading to an argument between Edmund, Albany, Goneril, and Regan, who becomes increasingly unwell as the scene progresses. The fight culminates in Albany accusing Edmund and Goneril of treason, vowing to present his proof when the trumpets sound. Edmund accepts the challenge and dares his accuser to approach. Bathing seductively in her home, Regan uses all her powers of persuasion to delay Oswald's delivery of a message from Goneril to Edmund (and to warn Goneril to back off of Edmund, whose heart she thinks she's won), telling Oswald to kill Gloucester at once if he ever sees him. Meanwhile, Gloucester asks Poor Tom (Edgar) to lead him to the top of the Golden Gate Bridge, where he intends to jump to his death. Edgar tricks his father into thinking he's at the railing of the bridge, and Gloucester, falling forward, faints on level ground. As his father wakes, Edgar takes on a new persona, convincing Gloucester that Poor Tom was a phantom and that Gloucester has miraculously survived his fall, giving him renewed faith and hope. They are interrupted by King Lear, who rides in on a rusted bicycle, railing in fits of madness and clarity at everything he encounters until he recognizes and soothes Gloucester, only to run away again when Cordelia's soldiers spot him. Edgar leads his father from the bridge to a cable car, where Oswald, riding in the back of the cable car, sees them and tries to stab Gloucester to death. He is killed instead by Edgar, who discovers Goneril's letter to Edmund in Oswald's pocket. Father and son flee from the scene as the police approach. Cornwall is gravely injured by a servant trying to defend Gloucester, who has been captured and tortured for aiding King Lear. Gloucester is blinded and cast out of his own home into Golden Gate Park, where he encounters “Poor Tom” (Edgar), who comes to his aid without revealing his true identity as Gloucester's son. The next morning, Goneril receives Edmund in her home and allies herself with him before a bitter feud with her now estranged husband, Albany. They are interrupted by news of Cornwall's death and Gloucester's blinding, which drives a wedge even further between Goneril and Albany. Meanwhile, Kent confers with Lear's gentleman in the French camp at Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland and advances plans with him to further assist the King. Elsewhere in the camp, Cordelia receives news of her father's poor health and sends soldiers to find him and bring him to her for aid and comfort. Lear rails at the raging storm on the cliffs of the Marin Headlands as The Fool and Kent (disguised as Caius) beg him to seek shelter in a nearby shack, where they discover Edgar disguised as “Poor Tom”. Meanwhile, Gloucester confides in Edmund his misgivings about the King's treatment, sharing intelligence he's gathered concerning plots to avenge Lear. Edmund gives this news to Cornwall, who rewards him by making him Earl and vows to take revenge on Edmund's father. Later, Gloucester finds Lear and his companions in the shack and persuades them to take shelter in his basement, where Lear stages a mock trial of his daughters before finally falling asleep. Moments later, Gloucester returns with news of an imminent plot to kill the King, and smuggles them all out of his house into a carriage bound for Dover, where he promises they will be safe. Edgar goes into hiding as “Poor Tom”, a beggar in Golden Gate Park. Lear arrives at Gloucester's mansion to find his servant Caius (Kent) locked in restraints. Furious, he lashes out at Cornwall, who defends his actions, and Regan, who tells him to return to Goneril and ask her forgiveness. As Lear fumes at her, Goneril arrives in the courtyard to the open embrace of her sister. Together, they whittle away at Lear's entourage as a storm approaches, eventually telling him to dismiss all his knights. Lear rails at them and vows revenge before blindly setting out into the storm alone. Caius follows him with The Fool as Cornwall orders Gloucester to shut the doors. Later, as the storm rages in the Marin Headlands, Kent finds Lear's Gentleman and informs him that French troops are secretly gathering in the ports to take advantage of the division between Albany and Cornwall. She urges him to deliver a message to Cordelia on Lear's behalf. The Play On Podcast series KING LEAR, was translated into modern English verse by MARCUS GARDLEY and directed by ERIC TING. Synopsis. The King curses Goneril for her inhospitable treatment and sends Caius (Kent) to find Regan. Back in his car with the Fool, Lear worries about his sanity and the Fool does his best to cheer him up. Later, outside Gloucester's mansion, Edmund gets word from Curan that Cornwall and Regan will soon arrive at his father's house, and that there is likely going to be a war between Cornwall and Albany over their territory. Edmund makes the most of the opportunity by convincing Edgar to flee from the house for his own safety, then pretends he was attacked by his brother for not going along with his plot against their father. He's immediately embraced by Cornwall, who promises to promote him. That evening, Caius arrives at Gloucester's mansion and gets into a fight with Regan's servant, Oswald. Gloucester, Edmund and Cornwall break it up and question Caius, who insults the Duke and all his company with his blunt talk. In return, Cornwall and Regan order that Caius be put in restraints for the rest of the night, despite Gloucester's objection. Once alone, Kent drops his “Caius” disguise and reads a letter he secretly received from Cordelia, in which she says she may be able to resolve the conflict in Lear's kingdom. Synopsis. In the garden outside Gloucester's Fillmore District mansion, a furious Edmund conspires to take from his brother what he feels he deserves from his father. Having set the trap, he drives to a nightclub where he sets up his brother Edgar for a fall from grace. Elsewhere, on an ocean beach outside of Goneril's mansion in outer-Richmond, San Francisco, Goneril instructs her servant, Oswald, to treat her father with disdain when he arrives, in the hope that it will push him to go to Regan's house instead. Inside Goneril's house, the exiled Kent has returned, disguised as a man-servant, Caius, in order to gain access to Lear. When the King arrives on the sundeck of the house, Kent (now Caius) greets him and wins his affection by shaming Oswald for disrespecting him. Soon after, the Fool arrives and berates Lear through thinly veiled humor for disowning Cordelia and giving his power over to his other two daughters. Finally, Goneril enters and greets her father coldly, telling him to get rid of his unruly knights and keep only the older ones who know their place. Lear defends his Knights and lashes out at Goneril, voicing his regret for shunning Cordelia. Synopsis. As a large crowd of invited guests gather in the ballroom of King Lear's home in San Francisco's Fillmore District to hear his much-anticipated announcement regarding his plans for the future of his kingdom, the Earl of Gloucester gossips with Lear's trusted advisor, Kent, about the King's shaky health, which is evident in his plans to split the kingdom among his daughters and their husbands, including his unwed daughter, Cordelia, who will choose to marry either the Duke of Burgundy or the King of France this very evening. Gloucester introduces Kent to his illegitimate son, Edmund, who he describes as well-spoken, but not made of the same stuff as his legitimate son, Edgar. Their conversation is interrupted when the King enters with Cordelia and his two eldest daughters, Goneril and Regan, each accompanied by their husbands, Albany and Cornwall. In lavish fashion, Lear announces his plans to divide his kingdom equally among his three daughters, provided they try to out-do each other in a contest to say which of them loves him the most. Goneril and Regan oblige him with lofty pronouncements of devotion, for which they are rewarded with vast lands and resources. Cordelia, on the other hand, declines to participate in the contest, saying nothing but that she loves her father as a daughter should, no more nor less. In return, Lear disowns Cordelia and splits the kingdom between his two eldest daughters and their husbands. Kent tries to defend Cordelia and is exiled from the kingdom. The Duke of Burgundy abandons his suit of the now disinherited Cordelia. The King of France, however, sees Cordelia for who she is and asks for her hand in marriage, which Lear accepts, vowing never to see his daughter again. Cordelia says goodbye to her sisters and leaves with the King of France. Goneril and Regan linger afterward to marvel at their fortune, and talk privately about their need to ally themselves against their father if he tries to cling to power. When Lionel discovers he will soon die, his concern for Liv's future leads him to call upon a neurologist, his former protege, Michael (Teddy Sears, The Flash), in hopes he will protect Liv. But, when Michael overhears Liv break her silence--weaving her own language from Shakespeare's words—he commits her to a psychiatric hospital. It is within those halls where Liv cannot be contained, where her rebellious nature causes her to become increasingly violent, and where a final emotional showdown will take place. Will it be on her terms, or will she lose herself? Director, co-writer, and star Eaton superbly crafts an unforgettable tale about humanity, about embracing those who are marginalized, and about how we should always strive to be something more…something extraordinary. – Michael Rabehl
