The man who would come to be known as The Bard, was born in April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom. One of, if not the greatest playwright in human history, William Shakespeare is responsible for 38 plays, 154 Sonnets, and credited with the invention of over 600 words in the English language. We still use phrases he invented on a daily basis. The man lived the theater and had a gift for capturing the complicated nature of people, creating complex but relatable characters and doing so with a masterful use of language. The man was also an entrepreneur, owning a share of his theater company and theater itself. Performing for royalty became common place for Shakespeare as he established himself as the premier playwright in London while never forgoting his roots in Stratford-upon-Avon where his family resided. Have you ever felt like you understand your Human Design chart, yet still notice places in your life where fear, grief, or uncertainty linger — especially around love, loss, and endings? In this episode, I explore why understanding Human Design — like understanding spirituality, death, or consciousness — is only the first phase of alignment. True transformation happens when we move out of the mind and into embodied soul awareness. This conversation was inspired by a quiet moment of grief while watching The Fault in Our Stars, which opened a deeper inquiry for me: what if death isn't the end of love, but a transition? And what if the same principle applies to how we live our Human Design? In this episode, I explore:Why two people can experience the same event — or have similar designs — and live entirely different realitiesWhat it means to move from reading your design to living itHow embodiment changes the way we lead, love, grieve, and let goThis is an invitation to soften, to trust, and to let alignment become something you live — not something you try to figure out.Timestamps:01:19 Exploring the Concept of Death and Transition03:06 The Soul's Journey After Death05:24 Personal Experiences and Insights08:11 The Holding Pattern Explained17:55 Stages of Soul Transition25:48 InvitationSTAY CONNECTED: Soul Guide Circle: JOIN the Soul Guide Circle closed Facebook Group Facebook: FOLLOW on Facebook Instagram: FOLLOW on Instagram YouTube: Follow in YouTube Ready to grow a prosperous soul-guided business? Send us a textToday I'm taking that same Shakespearean blueprint and placing it in a new world: the 1961 film West Side Story. I'm going to do this in the simplest and clearest way possible:I'm going to tell the film's story in a straight line.As we go, I'll point out the matching Shakespeare “parts” — not as trivia, but as the engine that makes both stories run.And one clear rule: no lyrics, no musical quotations. I don't wanna get in trouble, and besides We don't need them. This story is Shakespeare before anyone sings a note.Lantern lit. Curtain up.Let's put the pieces on the board.Tony is your Romeo figure: once connected to the Jets, now trying to step away from violence and build a different future.Maria is your Juliet figure: young, protected, watched, expected to choose within her group and remain loyal to it.The Jets and the Sharks are the Montagues and Capulets: rival “houses,” reimagined as rival street groups.Riff is Mercutio-energy: Tony's friend, charismatic, proud, full of swagger, and emotionally committed to the feud.Bernardo is Tybalt-energy: Maria's brother, protective, quick to escalate, and intensely driven by honor and group identity.Anita is the confidante figure — like a Nurse-energy role but tougher and more adult: she's protective and practical, and later becomes crucial to the catastrophe.Chino is the approved match, a Paris-function figure — and later becomes the instrument of tragedy. That's enough. Now we move.Support the showThank you for experiencing Celebrate Creativity.

Today we talk about the philosophy behind the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. We talk about how ineffective violence and honor codes are as ways of maintaining the stability of a society. How catastrophe may be a deterrent to violence. The tension presented by Shakespeare between a Christian view of love, marriage and salvation and an alternative religion of love from his time. How in the kinds of love we most admire there is sometimes an element of irrationality that makes it possible. Hope you love it. :) Sponsors: ZocDoc: https://www.ZocDoc.com/PHILO Quince: https://www.QUINCE.com/pt Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/philothis  Thank you so much for listening! This week on Required Reading, we dust off our middle school readers and learn about high schoolers in love. We read Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the passionate and mature love of a 13 and 15 year old. It's basically Elizabethan Degrassi.  Co-Hosts: Dr. Nic Hoffmann, Mike Burns, Mike Carroll   "n Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare creates a violent world, in which two young people fall in love. It is not simply that their families disapprove; the Montagues and the Capulets are engaged in a blood feud. In this death-filled setting, the movement from love at first sight to the lovers' final union in death seems almost inevitable. And yet, this play set in an extraordinary world has become the quintessential story of young love. In part because of its exquisite language, it is easy to respond as if it were about all young lovers." From the Folger Edition back cover.

Back with more Shakespeare! Before we get started with Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and The Tempest, I share a little about my experience with Shakespeare before this project. In short, it was almost ZERO. I tell you this so you can have confidence as you start your own Shakespeare journey. I have been shocked, amazed and gratified at how rewarding the time put in with Shakespeare has been. And now, on to the plays! This week's Shakespeare trio is a true mix of tones.Romeo & Juliet isn't merely a teen love story—it's an indictment of a society where everyone stays locked in their roles. No one is evil, yet parents, the Nurse, and Friar Lawrence all fail to act, and two young lives pay the price. Far more than “star-crossed lovers,” it's a drama of systemic failure that rewards an adult reread. After four tragedies, A Midsummer Night's Dream felt light and mischievous. Dame Judi Dench as Titania (in the 1960s BBC version) was delightful, though I found myself too drained for full comedy—still, it's hilarious on stage. Finally, The Tempest surprised me most: part adventure, part morality play. Prospero's obsession with magic—and his choice to reclaim true leadership—offers a sharp reminder that power and technology can distract from real responsibility.Three plays, three moods, and a deeper appreciation for Shakespeare's range. And we aren't done! Join us next week to finish our Shakespeare trilogy with a couple of histories and the wonderful, tragic, Othello.LINKTed Gioia/The Honest Broker's 12-Month Immersive Humanities Course (paywalled!)My Amazon Book List (NOT an affiliate link)My Romeo and Juliet Movie PickMy Midsummer Night's Dream Movie PickCONNECTThe complete list of Crack the Book Episodes: https://cheryldrury.substack.com/p/crack-the-book-start-here?r=u3t2rTo read more of my writing, visit my Substack - https://www.cheryldrury.substack.com.Follow me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cldrury/ LISTENSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5GpySInw1e8IqNQvXow7Lv?si=9ebd5508daa245bdApple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/crack-the-book/id1749793321 Captivate - https://crackthebook.captivate.fm

Hark! What song through yonder window breaks? It is "(Just Like) Romeo & Juliet" by The Reflections, from 1964. It may be the last gasp of doo-wop, but what a way to go out! You wouldn't believe how many other houses have covered this song - let's start with The Fadin' Colours from the land of Shakespeare. They add fuzz!, horns, and a turbulent arrangement that matches the dramatic subject matter. Little Caesar & The Consuls are some Canucks who sped the song up and affixed some hillbilly hiccupin'! Lovers of Nuggets will expect Michael & The Messengers version and we won't disappoint - a great organ-driven garage number that deserves your ears, countrymen! Ultimate Spinach are strong to the finish with their '68 rendition - surprisingly tasty! Finally, the Fallen Angels revived the song in '75 (too bad they couldn't do the same for the main characters) and it's wisely slow - they stumble that run fast! (that's from the Bard himself!!) These violent delights have violent end!

“Romeo and Juliet” may be Shakespeare's most famous love story—but it wasn't entirely his own. Long before the Bard set quill to page, a tale of star-crossed lovers was already circulating in Europe. In this episode, we're joined by filmmaker Timothy Scott Bogart, director of the new musical film Juliet & Romeo, which reimagines the lovers' story in its earlier, 13th-century context. Together, we explore the poems, legends, and historical figures that shaped the world Shakespeare would later dramatize, and discuss how the shifting timeline—from medieval Italy to Renaissance England—changes the story we think we know. 2024 has been the year of the iconic lovers Romeo and Juliet, and director Sam Gold has brought a bold new production of the timeless tragedy to Broadway. With a fresh, contemporary approach, Gold transforms Shakespeare's classic love story into an immersive experience that features a dynamic young cast led by Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) and Kit Connor (Heartstopper) and an innovative score by Grammy-winning musician Jack Antonoff, blending live music seamlessly into the action. Gold discusses how he re-envisioned the play for today's world, capturing the urgency and intensity of youth while staying true to the emotional heart of the original. He reflects on the challenges and joys of reinterpreting a well-known story and shares the creative process behind staging a Romeo and Juliet that feels relevant to a whole new generation of theatergoers, many of whom may be seeing their first Broadway. Sam Gold is a Tony Award-winning director with an extensive Broadway and theater resume. His Broadway credits include An Enemy of the People (this season) with Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli, Macbeth with Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga, King Lear with Glenda Jackson, A Doll's House, Part 2 (Tony Award Nomination), The Glass Menagerie, Fun Home (Tony Award), The Real Thing, The Realistic Joneses, and Seminar. Recent credits include Hamlet at The Public Theater, Othello at New York Theatre Workshop, The Flick (Lucille Lortel Award nomination) at Playwrights Horizons, Barrow Street Theatre, and the National Theatre, The Glass Menagerie (Toneelgroep, Amsterdam), John (Signature Theatre; Obie Award, Lortel and Drama Desk Award nominations), The Village Bike (MCC Theatre), and Uncle Vanya (Soho Repertory Theatre; Drama Desk nomination), among many others. Sam Gold has directed five Shakespeare tragedies, but his latest, “Romeo + Juliet,” is something different—a loud, clubby production designed to attract audiences the age of its protagonists. “It's as if the teens from ‘Euphoria' decided that they had to do Shakespeare,” Vinson Cunningham said, “and this is what they came up with.” The production stars Rachel Zegler, who starred in Steven Spielberg's remake of “West Side Story,” and Kit Connor, of the Gen Z Netflix hit “Heartstopper,” and features music by Jack Antonoff. Gold, who cut his teeth doing experimental theatre with the venerable downtown company the Wooster Group, bristles at the view that his production is unfaithful to the original. “A lot of people falsely sort of label me as a deconstructionist or something, because they're wearing street clothes,” he tells Cunningham. “I'm not deconstructing these plays. I'm doing the play. . . . I think it's a gross misunderstanding of the difference between conventions and authentic engagement in a text.” Gold aspires to excite kids to get off their phones. “We are in a mental-health crisis [of] teen suicide. I'm doing a play about teen suicide, and all those young people are coming. And I think we can help them.”

At first glance, the two books that make-up this episode of the Velshi Banned Book Club have very little similarities. Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet” is a critical keystone to both the English language and the art of storytelling. Everyone knows Romeo and Juliet's tragic love story. Dorit Rabinyan's “All The Rivers” is a semi-autobiographic love story between an Israeli and a Palestinian student in New York City. Together, the two books critically examine the realities of family ties, cultural demands, and the power of love. This episode explores what a star-crossed lover truly is and the enduring power of love stories.
