Roman V — founder and creative force behind black metal outfit Bizarrekult — returns to Into The Necrosphere this week. We go deep on the creation and themes of the band's new album, Alt Som Finnes, with Roman opening up about the personal struggles that shaped it, and how unexpected support from a scene legend helped bring it across the finish line. We also cover his experience performing at this year's Inferno Festival in Oslo, and plenty more.   On the Weekly News Rant, fellow Horseman of the Podcasting Apocalypse Mike Scondotto joins me for an epic breakdown of the latest singles from Ride For Revenge, Lorn, Inferno, Arroganz and more. We also get into the recent layoffs at MetalSucks and Metal Injection — and what they signal about the state of metal media — before Mike drops a “bad metal take” that needs to be heard to be believed.   PLUS: Soothsayer premiere their latest single on the Sphere, Werewolves throw down the black metal gauntlet with Faustian, and a delusional rockstar wannabe earns a watery reckoning in my Swirly of the Week.   Featured Bands Bizarrekult: https://bizarrekult.bandcamp.com/ Soothsayer: https://soothsayer.bandcamp.com/  Faustian:  https://apocalypticwitchcraft.bandcamp.com/  Morbid Angel:  https://morbid-angel.bandcamp.com/      Visit intothenecrosphere.com for playlists and more. Caius Lucius asks Cymbeline to ransom his servant, a British boy (who is, of course, the disguised Imogen). Cymbeline does not recognize her but orders her freed and offers to give her any privilege within his power to grant. She speaks with him in private, and Belarius and his sons marvel at seeing the adopted brother they thought was dead. Cymbeline returns and asks Iachimo to step forward. Imogen demands to know where he got the ring on his finger. Iachimo confesses how he used trickery to win the bet with Posthumus. Posthumus emerges from the crowd and attacks Iachimo. When Imogen tries to intervene, Posthumus hits her, thinking she's a boy. Pisanio scolds Posthumus. Imogen, revealing her true identity, turns on Pisanio for trying to poison her. The old doctor Cornelius intervenes, explaining how the Queen tricked Pisanio into thinking the poison was a healing potion and that he (Cornelius) secretly changed the ingredients to make it non-lethal. Posthumus embraces his wife. As everyone begins to piece it all together, Guiderius (Polydore) confesses that he killed Cloten. When Cymbeline orders that Guiderius be put to death for killing the prince, Belarius reveals himself as the banished courtier and tells the king that Guiderius and Arviragus are the sons that were stolen from him long ago. Cymbeline, overcome with happiness, forgives Belarius and welcomes him back to court. Meanwhile, Iachimo offers his life to Posthumus as payment for his sins, but Posthumus graciously forgives him. Together, everyone works to interpret the prophecy that Jupiter left in the book Posthumus found beside him that morning. The joyful king frees the Roman prisoners and vows to resume the tribute payments. Everyone goes to give thanks to the gods and to celebrate a lasting peace. Cymbeline threatens Pisanio with torture in an attempt to find out where Imogen has fled. The Romans invade Britain, and Belarius can't keep his sons from joining the fight. Posthumus returns to Britain with the Roman soldiers, believing Imogen is dead. Overcome with remorse, he takes off his Roman uniform and dresses as a British peasant for the battle. He disarms Iachimo, who begins to regret lying about Imogen. Belarius, Guderius and Arviragus save Cymbeline from capture, turning the tide of war against the Romans. Posthumus, despondent with remorse, changes back into his Roman uniform in order to be captured and put to death. He's thrown into prison and falls asleep in his cell, where he's visited by the spirits of his dead ancestors who gather around him pleading for Jupiter to take pity on him and restore his fortunes. Jupiter agrees to bring happiness to Posthumus, leaving a book near his sleeping body. Posthumus wakes and begins to read from the book, trying to interpret its riddle until the jailer takes him to be hanged. A messenger intervenes, summoning Posthumus. Cymbeline knights Belarius and his boys for their valor, not knowing their true identity. Word arrives that before dying, the Queen confessed she never loved Cymbline and that she planned to poison him so the crown would go to Cloten. The Roman prisoners, including Caius Lucius, Iachimo, Posthumus and Imogen (still disguised as Fidele), are all brought to stand before the King. Imogen faints when she sees her father. She apologizes and offers to pay for what she's taken, introducing herself as “Fidele”. Guiderius and Arviragus (who go by the names Polydore and Cadwal) feel an immediate kinship with the stranger and take to calling Imogen their brother. Meanwhile, Cloten, dressed in Posthumus's clothing, makes his way through the wilderness towards Milford Haven. Later, Belarius and his boys set out for another hunt. Imogen, feeling ill, stays behind and drinks the potion Pisanio gave her thinking it will make her feel better. Out on the hunt, Belarius and his sons see Cloten. Belarius and Arviragus run ahead to find out if he's alone. When Guiderius comes forward, Cloten challenges him to a duel. Guiderius cuts off Cloten's head and returns to his brother and father, who recognizes Cloten's face and laments that they're in big trouble. The boys disregard their father's concern and go triumphantly to wake Fidele, only to find the disguised Imogen seemingly dead from the potion. Grief-stricken, Belarius and his sons sing a prayer as they lay Imogen in the woods next to Cloten's headless body, covering them with flowers. Imogen awakens after they've departed and sees the headless corpse next to her, dressed in Posthumus's clothes. Assuming it's her husband, she realizes she drank a sleeping potion and thinks Pisanio slipped it to her in order to kill Posthumus. She collapses in grief and is later discovered by Caius Lucius and his men. Remembering her disguise, Imogen introduces herself as Fidele. Lucius is impressed and employs her as his page. The boys complain about never being allowed to go to the city. Belarius tells them the city is nothing but treachery, recalling his days as a nobleman in Cymbeline's court before he was banished for crimes he did not commit. It turns out the two boys are actually Cymbelines' sons who Belarius kidnapped as babies in order to avenge his exile. Meanwhile, Imogen and Pisanio arrive in Milford Haven. Seeing no sign of her husband, Imogen gets upset. Finally, Pisanio shows her the letter from Posthumus ordering Imogen's murder. Cursing her husband's lack of trust in her, she begs Pisanio to follow Posthumus's orders and kill her. Pisanio refuses, telling Imogen that they should fake her death instead to make Posthumus regret his actions. Imogen agrees, disguises herself as a boy and sets out to find Caius Lucius, who will soon be leaving for Rome from the port of Milford Haven. Pisanio sends her off with the potion the Queen gave him, believing it will soothe her if she becomes sick on the voyage. When Pisanio returns, Cloten confronts him, demanding to know the whereabouts of the Princess. The prince leaves the palace with Posthumus's clothing, vowing to wear them when he rapes the Imogen. Meanwhile, Imogen gets lost in the wilderness, where she stumbles upon Belarius's cave. As they play, Cymbeline and the Queen pass by and tell Cloten to keep persisting with Imogen. A messenger brings word that ambassadors from Rome have arrived. The royal couple goes to greet the Romans, telling Cloten to join them after he leaves Imogen's chambers. Cloten knocks on Imogen's door and tries to bribe one of her ladies-in-waiting before Imogen appears. Imogen turns Cloten away so harshly that he vows to get revenge on Posthumus. As he rails, Imogen realizes that the bracelet Posthumus gave her is missing. She orders Pisanio to have her servants search for it. Meanwhile, Iachimo returns to Italy and goes to Philario's house, where Philario and Posthumus are discussing the prospects of war between Rome and Britain over the tribute that Cymbeline owes Caesar. Iachimo claims to have won the bet, saying he slept with Imogen and describing her bedroom in detail. He shows off the bracelet he took from her wrist, then adds the detail of the mole on Imogen's breast. Enraged, Posthumus turns over the ring he wagered. Back in Britain, Cymbeline refuses to pay the tribute Caius Lucius demands for Rome. Lucius says that can only mean war between the nations. Meanwhile, Pisanio receives a letter from Posthumus accusing Imogen of infidelity and ordering him to murder her. The Queen tries to convince Pisanio to help make Imogen fall in love with her son Cloten, but Pisanio says nothing. She drops the poison, but when Pisanio tries to give it back to her, she tells him it's medicine and he should keep it to use whenever he's sick. Later, Iachimo arrives at the palace to win his bet with Posthumus. He tells Imogen that her husband has taken a prostitute and she believes him, but when he suggests she can get back at Posthumus by sleeping with him, Imogen realizes the story is a trick to get her into bed. She calls for Pisanio but Iachimo backtracks, pretending he was only testing Imogen's fidelity to her husband. Imogen believes his story and agrees to keep a trunk with valuable jewels in her room that night while Posthumus stays at the castle. Meanwhile, Cloten complains that no one will fight him because he's the Queen's son. The Lord showers him with praise and encouragement but mocks him behind his back. That night, Imogen falls asleep while reading in her bed. Iachimo emerges from the trunk and steals Posthumus's bracelet from her wrist. ***This show is brought to you by Quince. Go to http://quince.com/playonpod for free shipping on your order and 365-day returns.*** A writer describes the backstory of “Cymbeline” to her companion: King Cymbeline became the protector of Posthumus, the orphaned son of a valiant soldier. Cymbeline also had two sons of his own, Guiderius and Arviragus, and a daughter named Imogen. His two sons were kidnapped when they were young and have never been found. Cymbeline's wife died and he married a new queen, who had a son named Cloten. He wants Imogen to marry Cloten but she defies him by marrying Posthumus instead. The couple secretly exchange a ring and bracelet before Cymbeline banishes Posthumus in fury. Cloten tries to pick a fight with Posthumus but Posthumus avoids the conflict, choosing to go to his father's old friend Philario in Rome, and leaving his servant, Pisanio, behind with Imogen. Cloten boasts of his bravery as his servant ridicules him under his breath. Once in Rome, Posthumus meets a nobleman named Iachimo and a Frenchman who recalls Posthumus describing Imogen as fairer than the fairest ladies in France. Iachimo scoffs at this and wagers with Posthumus that he can seduce Imogen, betting against the ring that Imogen gave her husband. It's a curious name which came about following the arrival of the Black Plague on the Isle of Wight in 1582. It was the only building in which no one fell ill or died - locals believed the inhabitants had been spared due to 'Gods Providence'.Rebuilt following a fire in 1699, it's whispered to be one of the most spiritually active buildings in town.Staff have reported hearing footsteps pacing above when no one's there, and one former tenant claimed to see a woman in grey sitting in the corner of a locked room. They say she was knitting. Script 2You wish to know where the most huge and fearsome dragon in all the land resides? Ah! A most fascinating question, mortal. The huge and fearsome dragon you speak of resides in the Cathedral of Diamonds. And now my faithful guards, throw him into the well of death!Good. It is done. And now I will continue to sit and to wait, in the hope that the day will come when somebody will ask me a question I actually know the answer to.

Subscriber-only episodeThe most important thing to understand in Nietzsche's thought is nihilism, and not as we understand the term but as Nietzsche understands it. Here I discuss the meaning of nihilism as Nietzsche's Zarathustra presents it in chapter 19 of book 2 in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, entitled "The Soothsayer." The reason this is so important is that one cannot understand what Zarathustra expects of mankind in the figure of the overman unless and until one understands what Zarathustra must himself overcome. The meaning of redemption in Nietzsche comes from this, namely, the overcoming of the most powerful form of nihilism that his Zarathustra confronts.

Tric and Heppa negotiate with saurians. Scene 10 Scene 11 Scene 12 GM Notes This arc, we used a number of video game units to help flesh out our story. Tric imagined Breda as an Elvish Captain. Quemilya's magic theory discussion was influenced by the Sorceress write-up, as Tric's training is by the one for the Elvish Lord. And some of the rapid-seeming changes in the society of our short-lived saurian allies came from the descriptions and artwork of such units as Skirmisher, Ambusher, and Soothsayer. Some cultural details are pulled from the general overview of saurians on the Wesnoth wiki, but I put my own spin on them. Our character art by Del Borovic and the map we refer to (by me!) can be found here. As Brutus waits for Cassius in the rebel camp, he learns from Lucilius that Cassius is not as friendly as he once was. As soon as he arrives, Cassius accuses Brutus of wronging him. Not wanting their soldiers to see them fighting, they withdraw into Brutus's tent to carry out their argument in private. It all comes to an end when Cassius offers his dagger to Brutus and bares his chest for Brutus to kill him. Once they make their peace, Brutus tells Cassius that his wife, Portia, has killed herself by swallowing hot coals. Cassius is shocked and saddened but Brutus insists that they focus on their battle plans. Cassius suggests they wait for Antony and Octavius' armies to exhaust themselves reaching them where they are now but Brutus disagrees, saying they should meet their enemy half way, at Philippi. Cassius gives in. Once alone, Brutus is visited by Caesar's ghost, who tells him they will meet again at Philippi. Brutus wakes his guards but they all say they didn't see anything. He sends word to Cassius to be ready to march ahead of him the next morning. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. Caesar approaches the Temple, noting that the “Ides of March” have come. He refuses to read Artemidorus's warning. Cassius worries their plot has been discovered but Brutus reassures him. As they approach the Temple, Metellus Cimber pleads with Caesar to return her brother, Publius, from banishment. Caesar refuses. Once inside the Temple, the conspirators surround Caesar and stab him to death, proclaiming “Tyranny is dead!” Antony's servant enters and reports that Antony has fled to his house. Brutus invites the conspirators to bathe their hands in Caesar's blood. As a crowd assembles outside the Temple, Antony's servant returns to ask for safe passage for Antony to speak with the assassins. Brutus grants his request. Antony enters and offers his life unless they can justify their actions. Brutus tells him that all will be explained once they've quelled the crowd. Antony shakes hands with each of the conspirators and requests permission to speak at Caesar's funeral. Cassius is reluctant but Brutus agrees, making Antony promise not to speak poorly about them. Once alone with Caesar's body, Antony mourns and vows revenge. Octavius's guard enters to give word that Octavius is on his way to the city. Antony tells him to report to Octavius about what's happened and to warn him not to arrive until they see how things unfold. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. Brutus paces in his study, unable to sleep. His wife, Portia, enters and begs him to tell her why he's so troubled. He does his best to comfort her and tells her he'll explain everything later. Caius Ligarius, an ailing Senator, enters to meet with Brutus, who convinces him to join the assassination plot. Caesar has a hard night as well. His wife, Calphurnia, tells him of terrible dreams she's been having about his murder and says they are omens for Caesar not to go out of the house. When Decius arrives to accompany Caesar to the Temple, Caesar explains that he is staying home on account of Calphurnia's dreams. Decius tells him that the blood in Calphurnia's dreams is a symbol of the new life that Caesar gives his followers and that he will be seen as a coward if he stays home. Caesar changes his mind and leaves with Decius and the rest of the conspirators. Elsewhere, a poet and prophet named Artemidorus writes a letter to Caesar warning him to beware, naming all the traitors who are out to get him. He vows to hand Caesar his letter when he passes by. Outside the Temple, Portia frets over the conspiracy that her husband has confided to her. She tells Lucius to go into the Temple and report back to her about what's going on. When the Soothsayer passes, Portia grills her to find out what she's going to tell Caesar. The Soothsayer responds that she is only going to tell Caesar to befriend himself and beware of others. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. Caska and Cicero meet on a stormy night. Caska trembles at the omens he's seen until Cassius arrives and dispels his fears with the encouragement that they're not alone in fighting tyranny. Cinna nervously joins them, expressing her hope that Brutus will join their conspiracy. Cassius reassures her that Brutus is on board. Later that night, Brutus ruminates at home on the possibility of killing Caesar, deciding that murder is the only way to stop him. His servant, Lucius, announces the arrival of cloaked guests. Brutus welcomes them and Cassius introduces the co-conspirators: Trebonius, Decius Brutus, Caska, Cinna and Metellus Cimber. Together, they plan Caesar's assassination. Cassius suggests that they swear an oath but Brutus says oaths aren't necessary because their plan is noble. They all agree not to include Cicero in their plans. Cassius suggests that they also kill Mark Antony but Brutus advises against it, saying they will appear “too bloody” and that Antony won't be a threat once Caesar is dead. When Cassius worries that Caesar won't come to the Temple, Decius offers to bring him to the Temple herself. Cassius says they'll all go to Caesar's house together instead. Metellus suggests that they include Caius Ligarius in their plans and Brutus agrees, then sends everyone on their way, telling them all to freshen up so their looks won't betray their purposes. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. Activists assemble outside the Stadium to celebrate Caesar when they're interrupted by Flavius and Murellus, who challenge them to honor not just one man but all the people who helped in the Movement. Once the group breaks up and moves on, Flavius tells Murellus to help him take down all the posters celebrating Caesar. Inside the stadium, Caesar and his entourage–including his closest friend, Antony, and his wife, Calphurnia–are enjoying the thrills of a drag race when they're interrupted by an old woman who warns Caesar to beware the “Ides of March”. Caesar dismisses the woman and tells his entourage to enjoy the race with him. Cassius and Brutus stay behind and share their honest feelings about Caesar. Cassius tells Brutus he thinks Caesar is weak, spurring Brutus to confess he's uneasy with the way things are going in Rome. As they return from the race, Caesar sees the two men talking and tells Antony he thinks Cassius is dangerous. Brutus pulls Caska aside and asks him for details about what took place at the race. Caska describes how Caesar refused the crown three times when it was offered to him, further endearing him to the crowd. Caska also describes how Caesar “fell down” and foamed at the mouth. Brutus suggests that Caesar must have the “falling sickness” (epilepsy). Cassius says Caesar is not like them. Caska goes on to describe how Flavius and Murellus were punished for pulling down placards and posters celebrating Caesar, warning Cassius and Brutus to watch how they treat him. After Brutus and Caska depart, Cassius muses to himself about how easily Brutus can be manipulated. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. This is episode 187 - it's 1851. Time to take stock of what's going on across southern Africa which as you know was in the throes of the 8th Frontier War. A significant war. After that we'll return to Thomas Stubbs who had turned himself into a useful night raider and was about to show the British how to fight in the Albany thickets. To the north, in the mountains of the BaSotho people, King Moshoeshoe the first was not idle in early 1851and his patience with his own kith and kin as well as with the Boers and the British had worn out. When word of Mlanjeni the prophet reached the BaSotho - and how his new message of salvation through a mixture of Christianity and amaXhosa religion had resonated with so many, Moshoeshoe kept a clear head. He had allowed the French missionaries and Casalis in particular to operate within his kingdom and trusted the man in black, but now the exuberant revival of traditional customs and rituals and warfare began to sweep through LeSotho — a millenarian moment. Mlanjeni's reputation caused a relapse among the BaSotho converts, led by a local diviner called Mantsopa who began to build a formiddable reputation as a soothsayer. She could predict victories in war it was said, and in 1850 and 1851 the revivalist movement grew more powerful. Moshoeshoe was always cautious when to came to religion, as you'll hear when we return over the coming episodes to the mountain kingdom. Moshoeshoe took note of this reaction and how the racial and political message was deeply felt by his people. And yet he continued to attend French missionary Casalis' church services out of good faith, and ensured that the missionaries were protected. He also reinforced to all that he was a man of his word. This is the really incredible thing, whereas most others around him were quite ready to go on some terminal quest to kill all the invaders, he was first and foremost, a realist. This all began to come to a head as the 8th Frontier war exploded when the British officials in the Orange River Sovereignty demanded restitution for cattle raiding. And now it's time to return to the story of Thomas Stubbs. His part in this epic drama is seemingly insignificant, and yet it is more important at second glance. What, would you say, could really be important about a small-scale import export trading rebel who was a part-time saddle artisan from Albany ? A man who's father Henry made money trading illegally with the amaXhosa? As I mentioned in passing last episode, in some ways, Stubbs set off a series of what became known as special force tactics in the British Army. He wasn't alone in the period, the British Army was coming up regularly against unconventional soldiers experts in their own bush and veld. In India, Canada, Australia, the middle East. But what was really important about Thomas Stubbs was how he approached tactical issues in the bush. The entire British military experiment in the mid-19th Century was all about seeing what was going on— marching around — bugles, classic red tunics, polished buttons flashing in the midday sun where they'd strut about. You know the saying, no-one goes out in the midday sun except mad dogs and Englishmen.

Marketing effectiveness has fallen by nearly a quarter since 2020. Ian Baer, Founder & Chief Soothsayer at Sooth, offers his insights on how healthcare organizations can respond, with Jim Cagliostro.   Episode Introduction Ian shares how 90% of today's marketing decisions are emotional, and 80% are made on impulse, and the challenges of ‘'marketing by the pound.'' He also explains why a regulatory environment means healthcare often stays in the shallow end of the marketing pool, how data unlocks empathy between brands and audiences, and advises everyone to ‘'bring your soul to work every day.''   Show Topics   Making emotional connections in marketing Sooth helps brands to understand the truth Healthcare has unique marketing challenges ‘'Marketing by the pound'' The roadmap of healthcare marketing is the most complicated The power of patient stories Leadership tip: Bring your soul to work every day     08:13 Making emotional connections in marketing  Ian said 90% of the decisions people make when spending money are emotional.  ‘'AI, it's very buzzwordy, but what it does for us is it allows me to take what used to require one or two years of custom research that might cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, into a methodology that we can execute in a few weeks to give a brand a very clear understanding of the emotional journey of the individual that they're trying to reach. Now of course, the impact in healthcare is huge because look, 90% of all the decisions people make when it comes to spending their money are emotional. It's a big mistake marketers made for decades upon decades in thinking there's a balance between the rational and their emotional. No, there isn't. People make emotional decisions, and then they seek rationale to back up where their heart has already gone. And Harvard did some brilliant work that they published in 2016, an article I recommend to anybody and everybody get their hands on, called The New Science of Customer Emotion. .. And what they found was, of the thousands of different emotions we all experience, it's been estimated that people experience 34,000 different emotions. … But what they found is there are actually only 10 things that we feel as humans that have a positive correlation to the way we spend our money.''   14:54 Sooth helps brands to understand the truth  Ian explained the background to his company name, and its purpose.   ‘'So, I went looking through my LinkedIn profile, just going through all my experience and, "How can I describe what I do?" And I found a LinkedIn recommendation from a former client in which he referred to me as, "Soothsayer." And it reminded me that very often, when we were at a time of crisis for his brand, he would pick up the phone and call me and say, "Oh, soothsayer." And that would very often start our conversations. I thought, "Well, that's a really interesting word." I always thought a soothsayer was somebody who predicts the future. It's not. Soothsayer is somebody who tells the truth. The word sooth literally means truth. It just went obsolete in the English language about 400 years ago when Shakespeare got done with it, which is what enabled me to actually trademark it as the name of a business. It's pretty hard to get a vernacular word as the name of your company. So, when we decided to name the business Sooth, because in reality that is exactly what we're doing is helping brands understand the truth, then it just followed suit that I should be the soothsayer, that we actually have two practices at the company. We have the soothsaying practice, which is determining what the truths are, and then our client partnership practice, we call those people ‘'soothsolvers'' because what they do is actually take the truth and put it to work in really smart marketing recommendations, and work in partnership with senior leaders on the client side.''   17:23 Healthcare has unique marketing challenges Ian said the regulatory environment means that healthcare is averse to taking marketing risks.  ‘'Because of the regulatory environment, healthcare marketers have learned to play it extremely safe, and it's understandable. The last thing you want is a slap on the wrist, or much worse, from the FDA when you've spent countless millions of dollars, let's say, bringing a drug to market. But the result is most healthcare marketers have become conditioned to stay in the very shallow end of the swimming pool. And where that becomes unfortunate, we spoke earlier about no industry really needing empathy in their marketing more than healthcare. Well, we now have the ability through use of data, through use of technology, through one-to-one connection and interaction, through experience design, to create a really special personal experience. And yet, data privacy is a scary thing. Engaging with someone, one-on-one, whether it's through social media or other, that's a scary thing because you may wind up having to capture adverse reaction information that you then have to report to the FDA, that a lot of people would prefer not to get their hands up. So, the result is you have too many brands that don't say enough to really be helpful to people, and they're holding back way too much. And one of the biggest challenges there is the unregulated side of the healthcare space, the area that a lot of healthcare marketers might not want to acknowledge as legitimate, companies selling nutritional supplements, companies selling devices that don't really have any medical benefit, but they're claiming, "Just put this on your wrist. Just put this on your knee. Just sit up against this thing." They're not operating under the auspices of the FDA. They're making outrageous claims, and almost daring consumers and competitors to sue them. And because we live in a world now, where it's very hard for anyone to find one truth in any area of marketing or the news, consumers are somewhat in the crosshairs here. So, if healthcare marketers play it too safe and continue to stay in the shallow end, the ones who lose are the very patients and families that they're trying to help, because they'll chase false promises that really are leading healthcare marketers can fulfill in a much more meaningful way.''   21:35 ‘'Marketing by the pound'' Ian said marketing effectiveness is down by nearly a quarter since 2020 and 80% of people make decisions on impulse.  ‘'Yeah, marketing effectiveness overall is down 23% since 2020, as a global practice, across all industries. Marketing is significantly less effective than it was 20 years ago. So, we have more data than ever, more technology than ever, more access to people than ever. And we're getting so bad at this that most brands have now shifted much more to managing the economics of marketing, how much they're spending. It's become somewhat of a marketing by the pound model because if we can't get it to produce more, then we just have to spend less on it. And everyone has gotten to settle for this reduced level of performance. How did we get here? Well, impulse is a huge issue. The extent to which people make purchase decisions, and a decision to seek out a certain medication, that falls into the category of purchase decisions. The extent to which people do this on impulse has doubled in the last 10 years, and the amount of money people spend on impulse purchases like that, "I'm going to click twice on this Facebook ad and get those gummies and throw out my metformin." That's happening faster than ever. So, when 90% of decisions are emotional, when 80% of people are making decisions on impulse, which means they're not gathering the facts, they're not gathering information, they're not calling their doctor, they're not asking other people who are suffering with the same condition. They're just saying, "Yep, that's for me." That's how we got here.   26:33 The roadmap of healthcare marketing is the most complicated Ian explained why patients and professionals walk one path, with multiple points of view at every step.  ‘'Here, every step of the way, there's an advisory relationship going on. There are certain things the consumer can do without the professional. There are certain things they cannot do without the profession, and it really is a pathway that needs to be curated. We need to understand where they come together and the information they need to reach the right decisions, and where they're going to be off on their own, exposed to different information. So, I think starting with the fact that there is no differentiated journey between the patient and the professional, but actually it's one journey, it's one path, and they're both walking it. They just enter and exit at different times. I think that's the most critical truth to understand, to start to do this thing the right way and to see every one of the decision points through multiple sets of eyes: the patient, the professional, often caregivers are involved. Sometimes you have primary and specialist professionals, institutions, payers. There are multiple points of view at every stage that need to be considered. It is the most complicated roadmap of marketing that exists.''   30:32 The power of patient stories  Ian said there's no substitute for hearing people's ‘'data-rich'' real stories.  ‘'There's a lot of things a drug company can't say, that a patient can. And I think the more drug companies get comfortable giving voice to the people who are actually on the journey with that disease or that illness, it's really going to help bridge the gap between this kind of odd mix of old school branding and clinical detail. But within all of that, I have a hard time finding the humanity, and I think the more brands get comfortable, letting people tell the story of what it's really like to experience the uncertainty of disease, the hope that comes with treatments. I had a heart attack six months ago, a massive heart attack, the type that has a 96% fatality rate. It was the first cardiac event of my life. It changed my perspective on everything. I've learned a lot about my body, about my health, about what it's going to take to live a good healthy life for as long as I can. I've got a story to tell. There's millions of people like me who have stories to tell, and I would love to see more healthcare marketers be brave enough to let people tell their own stories. I think that would make a dramatic difference. Through the work we do here, we try to approximate that. We do a very good job of creating data-rich stories that represent people's beliefs and fears and tendencies. There is no substitute for hearing people's real stories. And when I see healthcare brands step up and tell real stories, I applaud them…… People retain information 30 times more when they hear it in a story.''   34:41 Leadership tip: Bring your soul to work every day  Ian shared an encounter with journalist Jimmy Breslin.  ‘'If you've never heard of Jimmy Breslin, you should find out who Jimmy Breslin was, because in New York in the 1970s and '80s, he was the most important voice in journalism. He told the stories of this city. And I got to meet him. And in a conversation in which he talked me out of a career in journalism, which is a story for another day, the advice he left me with was... the last thing he said as I walked out of the room, "Hey kid, don't be a suit. Whatever you do, don't be a suit." Now, nothing wrong with suits. I own a few. I wear them occasionally, but what it really meant to me and what I internalized and have carried as a mission is, "Don't ever give up who you are in the pursuit of business success. Don't ever give up your integrity. Don't ever give up your identity. Don't ever let a company tell you what you're really about as a human being." That has never let me down. It has defined both my good and bad career choices, but I think as much as you can stay true to yourself, that's what the world needs from you. AI is going to move in and automate a lot of the things that we don't need humans to do for themselves. So, more than ever, really bring your soul to work every day, and everyone that surrounds you will benefit from that.''   Connect with Lisa Miller on LinkedIn Connect with Jim Cagliostro on LinkedIn Connect with Ian Baer on LinkedIn    Check out VIE Healthcare and SpendMend    You'll also hear:    Ian's mission at Sooth: ‘'There's nothing more we can do as marketers, as a noble mission, than to help people live better, longer, healthier lives, protect families against the economic crisis that healthcare represents in our country right now. And that endless money pit, and homes and savings being lost, chasing solutions….. Our mission at Sooth is really all about being able to quantify and leverage a very deep level of understanding and empathy to solve people's problems. And gosh, doesn't healthcare need that?''   Disease is the #1 cause of bankruptcy in the US: ‘'People don't talk about that enough. It is more than just selling drugs. So much more than that. When you talk to people whose lives are being impacted by these diseases, it changes everything.''   What Soothsayer offers to healthcare organizations: ‘'What we do as a practice is give brands a highly robust understanding of all of that intricate emotional decision-making that they can literally wire their brand's marketing into. There is no category where empathy matters more than healthcare because everyone's journey with an illness is unique. …we're able to see all the way through, see where those emotions collide, see where they might cause people to sort of go into their own camps and how the brands can bring them back together.''   Why brand equity is occupying the wrong place in the timeline: ‘'Most brands still are too focused on the moment of truth, whether that truth is a click, whether that truth is a purchase, whether it's making an appointment, whether it's a visit, whether it's an order, whether it's a script. And what they're not focusing on is understanding who that person is before those transactional moments take place, and solving their problems, or at least giving them a pathway to a solution before they ever reach the moment of impulse. Because once you let them get to that moment of impulse, it is Dodge City.''   Data unlocks empathy: ‘'…my whole business is about using data to unlock empathy between brands and audiences. So, there's a huge role for data to play, but data is not just about targeting and segmentation and managing the numbers side of things. We are all, really, walking data vaults. Our data includes experiences, our data includes our emotions, our impulses. These are data points too, and they're every bit as valid and important, and drive 90% of the impact of marketing effectiveness.''
