Larry Ostola speaks with David A. Borys about his book, Punching Above Our Weight: The Canadian Military at War Since 1867. Punching Above Our Weight offers a comprehensive history of the Canadian military, covering 150 years of evolution from a small, poorly equipped militia to a modern, effective force. It highlights key events such as the Red River Resistance, the Boer War, both World Wars, and peacekeeping missions, including the long Afghan conflict. Borys examines crucial battles like Amiens and Operation Medusa, and important figures such as Louis Riel and Arthur Currie. The book also delves into significant moments, including Canada's declaration of war and the 1990s peacekeeping crises. It addresses challenges faced by the military, such as resource struggles, cultural shifts, and scandals, while offering a fresh perspective on Canada's role in international conflicts. David A. Borys is a Canadian military historian and faculty member at Langara College in Vancouver. He has been seen on such history programs as APTN's Nations at War and National Geographic's Hitler's Last Stand, and is the host of the popular history podcast Curious Canadian History.

You can send me a text if you have a comment or questionA peace that leads to War?We look at the clash of realities from philosophical to practical questions of empire between France and Britain. From the beginning, key British decision makers like George 3 and Pitt the Younger, saw the peace as an experiment. It wasn't likely to work, so much against it. However, the war had run on too long. The people were demanding peace, the mob both demanded peace and associated the decline in wheat prices with the naval armistice of the previous year. But what kind of peace was it? What did the two sides give up, and what did they get in return? These questions illustrate a major flaw in this peace and Napoleon's many peaces generally. Britain got so little from the peace that it was only lightly attached to it.Napoleon was unwilling to allow trade between Britain and France. He feared to expose key constituents to British competition, which most expected to penetrate deeply into French markets for textiles, ores, metal and metalware. In short, without being able to name it, Napoleon feared the miracle.

What were two Irish sisters doing in Russia during the early years of the nineteenth century, editing the French-language memoirs of a princess who had been a close confidante of Catherine the Great? Author Alexis Wolf is in conversation with Duncan McCargo about a remarkable transnational story she has unearthed through meticulous archival research. Transnational Women Writers in the Wilmot Coterie, 1798-1840 (Boydell Press, 2024) highlights the centrality of non-canonical, middle-ranking women writers to the production of literature and culture in Britain, Ireland, Europe and Russia in the late eighteenth century. The Irish writers and editors Katherine (1773-1824) and Martha Wilmot (1775-1873) left a unique record of middle-ranking women's literary practices and experiences of travel in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Their manuscripts are notable for their vivid portrayal of the era's political conflicts, capturing a flight from Ireland during the Irish Rebellion (1798), time spent in Paris during the Peace of Amiens (1801-03), and extended residences in Russia during the Napoleonic Wars. However, in their accounts of these key European events, the Wilmots' manuscripts, and published work, showcase their participation in a startling range of self-educating activities, including travel writing, biography, antiquarianism, early ethnographic observation, language acquisition, translation practices and editorial work. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book explores the collaborative relationships formed by women participating in cosmopolitan networks beyond the typical locations of the Grand Tour. Across their travels, the sisters met, engaged with, and learned from numerous key women of the time, including Princess Ekaterina Dashkova, Margaret King, Lady Mount Cashell and Helen Maria Williams. In this first full-length study to focus on the literary and cultural exchanges surrounding the Wilmot sisters, Wolf showcases how manuscript circulation, coterie engagement and transnational travel provided avenues for women to engage with the intellectual discourses from which they were often excluded. Alexis Wolf is an independent scholar of eighteenth and nineteenth century literature. Author David Borys comes on the podcast to discuss his book “Punching Above Our Weight: The Canadian Military at War Since 1867,” which takes readers on a riveting exploration spanning one hundred and fifty years of Canadian forces. “Punching Above Our Weight" is a photograph-rich history of 150 years of the Canadian military traces the evolution of the country's armed forces from a small, underfunded, poorly trained militia to the modern, effective military it is today. From the Red River Resistance and the Boer War through the world wars to modern peacekeeping and the long war in Afghanistan, David A. Borys details the conflicts and operations that Canadian soldiers have served in. He highlights the key battles, among them Amiens, the Scheldt Estuary, and Operation Medusa; the significant people, including Louis Riel, Arthur Currie, and Guy Simonds; and the decisive moments, such as the passing of conscription in August 1917, Canada's declaration of war in 1939, and the peacekeeping crises of the 1990s, that came to define the scope of Canada's participation in international conflicts and cement its global reputation. Borys also explores the challenges that the Canadian nation and its military have faced over those years, including major cultural and demographic shifts, a continual struggle for resources from generally disinterested governments, battlefield failures, and notorious and shocking scandals, along with ever-changing global threats. Punching Above Our Weight brings to light a new perspective on the Canadian military and its place in the world.
This holy and beloved Western Saint, the patron of France, was born in Pannonia (modern-day Hungary) in 316, to a pagan military family stationed there. Soon the family returned home to Italy, where Martin grew up. He began to go to church at the age of ten, and became a catechumen. Though he desired to become a monk, he first entered the army in obedience to his parents. One day, when he was stationed in Amiens in Gaul, he met a poor man shivering for lack of clothing. He had already given all his money as alms, so he drew his sword, cut his soldier's cloak in half, and gave half of it to the poor man. That night Christ appeared to him, clothed in the half-cloak he had given away, and said to His angels, "Martin, though still a catechumen, has clothed me in this garment." Martin was baptised soon afterward. Though he still desired to become a monk, he did not obtain his discharge from the army until many years later, in 356. He soon became a disciple of St Hilary of Poitiers (commemorated January 13), the "Athanasius of the West." After traveling in Pannonia and Italy (where he converted his mother to faith in Christ), he returned to Gaul, where the Arian heretics were gaining much ground. Not long afterward became Bishop of Tours, where he shone as a shepherd of the Church: bringing pagans to the faith, healing the sick, establishing monastic life throughout Gaul, and battling the Arian heresy so widespread throughout the West. Finding the episcopal residence too grand, he lived in a rude, isolated wooden hut, even while fulfilling all the duties of a Bishop of the Church. His severity against heresy was always accompanied by love and kindness toward all: he once traveled to plead with the Emperor Maximus to preserve the lives of some Priscillianist heretics whom the Emperor meant to execute. As the holy Bishop lay dying in 397, the devil appeared to tempt him one last time. The Saint said, "You will find nothing in me that belongs to you. Abraham's bosom is about to receive me." With these words he gave up his soul to God. He is the first confessor who was not a martyr to be named a Saint in the West. His biographer, Sulpitius Severus, wrote of him: "Martin never let an hour or a moment go by without giving himself to prayer or to reading and, even as he read or was otherwise occupied, he never ceased from prayer to God. He was never seen out of temper or disturbed, distressed or laughing. Always one and the same, his face invariably shining with heavenly joy, he seemed to have surpassed human nature. In his mouth was nothing but the Name of Christ and in his soul nothing but love, peace and mercy." Note: St Martin is commemorated on this day in the Greek and Slavic Synaxaria; his commemoration in the West, where he is especially honored, is on November 11.
As we've reached the Peace of Amiens it felt like a good time to pause and review the French Revolutionary Wars... Charles Esdaile and Alexander Mikaberidze took questions from Quartermasters about a decade of fighting in which the French defied expectations, the allies never quite clicked and Napoleon Bonaparte emerged as a truly great military commander. Phebe confronts Rosalind (“Johnnyseed”) for being rude, leading Sylvius, Phebe, Orlando and Rosalind to expound on the meaning of love as a thunderstorm descends. Rosalind ends their railing by telling them to meet again tomorrow for a wedding where they will all be married to the one they love. Touchstone and Audrey celebrate as two musicians from Duke Senior's camp pass by. Touchstone asks them to sing a song, which they do to great fanfare, but he gets jealous and mocks their music when they express interest in Audrey. The next day, Duke Senior arrives at the wedding site and asks Orlando if he thinks “Johnnyseed” is really capable of doing everything he promises. Rosalind shows up as Johnnyseed and checks with Duke Senior to be sure she'll allow her daughter to marry Orlando. S/he also checks to be sure Phebe will marry Silvius if Johnnyseed isn't available. Duke Senior tells Orlando that she sees some similarities between Johnnyseed and her daughter, Rosalind. When Touchstone and Audrey arrive, Jacques excitedly introduces Touchstone to the Duke. Touchstone entertains the Duke with a witty explanation of how to win an argument. Everything changes when Hymen envelops them all in a magical song, revealing Johnnyseed's true identity as Rosalind. Upon realizing that Johnnyseed is actually a woman who is in love with Orlando, Phebe agrees to marry Silvius. Hymen marries all four couples: Rosalind and Orlando, Celia and Oliver, Audrey and Touchstone and Phebe and Silvius. They dance together until Jakes DeBoys, the second son of Sir Roland, takes the stage to announce that Duke Frederick, who had entered the forest to kill his brother, was converted by an old religious man and decided to bequeath his crown to Duke Senior. Hearing this news, Jacques announces tells everyone he's going back to the Court and bids them all farewell. Rosalind ends the series with a speech of appreciation.
