Denzember continues with Culture Kitsch host Bobbi Miller joining us to discuss Kenneth Branagh's 1993 Shakespeare adaptation Much Ado About Nothing. Following his successful Henry V adaptation, Branagh returned to Shakespeare for a much airier, light-hearted affair, fashioning the classic play into an immensely pleasurable studio romantic comedy while preserving the spirit and (more importantly) the language of Much Ado..., assembling a showstopper ensemble led by Branagh, Emma Thompson, Michael Keaton, Keanu Reeves, and Denzel as Don Pedro of Aragon, nearly 30 years before he would take on The Tragedy of Macbeth.  We begin with a discussion of Branagh's formal tendencies, how his maximalism works for the genre, and illuminate his underremarked upon technical prowess. Then, we discuss what Branagh's Much Ado...  preserves from Shakespeare's stage, what it omits, and how these ommissions speak to the film's position as an End of History artifact interested in reifying traditional family values centered around monogamous, heterosexual couplings. Finally, we discuss how Denzel's Don Pedro is utliized narratively and thematically in the film, and how Denzel's movie star persona and race factor into our perception of the character. Beatrice jokes at dinner about the impossibility of finding the perfect man, swearing she'll never marry. Once the masked ball begins, she dances with Benedick, pretending she doesn't see through his disguise as she teases him mercilessly. Don Pedro dances with Hero and Borachio dances with Margaret. Later, Don John and Borachio spot Claudio outside, pretending to be Benedick. Don John tells him that Don Pedro is in love with Hero before going back inside with Borachio. Claudio is crestfallen and ditches Benedick, who stews over Beatrice's insults until Don Pedro comes out. Benedick berates the prince for stealing Hero from Claudio. Don Pedro scolds Benedick for being rude to Beatrice. Benedick says Beatrice was far worse to him and jokes about how horrible she is until she arrives unseen and overhears his rant. As Benedick beats a hasty retreat, Don Pedro tries to get her to forgive him but she tells him he's wronged her more than once. Having found Claudio, she pushes him to talk to Don Pedro, who informs him to his great surprise that he's won Hero for him and that Leonato has agreed to the match. As Hero and Claudio revel in their joy, Don Pedro asks Beatrice if she'd take him as a husband. She laughs before realizing he's not joking, then tells him she'll never marry. Leonato joins them and sends Beatrice inside so he and Don Pedro can plan for the wedding, which will be in a week. As everyone celebrates, Don Pedro conspires with Leonato, Claudio and Hero to make Beatrice and Benedick fall in love with each other. He tells his daughter, Hero, that a distinguished young soldier named Claudio is accompanying the prince. Leonato's niece, Beatrice, asks about a soldier named Benedick, with whom she has some history. Don Pedro arrives and steps off his ship with his brother, Don John, whose past transgressions he's recently forgiven. Benedick and Claudio step off the ship with Borachio, who has a quick aside with his old flame, Margaret, Beatrice's trusted servant. Beatrice and Benedick sling a few quick insults at each other before Don Pedro tells his soldiers that Leonato has invited them to stay for a month at his villa. As they leave the port, Claudio confides in Benedick that he's in love with Hero. Benedick tells Don Pedro, who encourages the match. In the limousine on the way to Leonato's villa, Don Pedro offers to help Claudio woo Hero at the upcoming masquerade ball. A few minutes later, in the kitchen of the villa where a feast is being prepared, Leonato's sister, Antonia, tells him that her dresser told her that her driver overheard Don Pedro telling Claudio that he loves Hero. That evening, Don John broods in a guest house as his friend, Conrade, tries to cheer him up. When the drunken Borachio arrives to say he heard Don Pedro talking to Claudio about how to woo Hero, Don John seizes the opportunity to make some mischief. When gentle Hero meets the shy Claudio in this comedy by William Shakespeare, there is alas quite a bit of spice in the gumbo with Beatrice, aka Lady Tongue, and the blunt Benedick as they banter to beat the bands. Don Pedro and company arrive at Messina and go to the home of the governor, Hero's father and Beatrice's uncle, Leonata. The unsavory half-brother of Don Pedro, Don John, is, as Kate said, a contaminant and sets out to destroy happiness wherever it crops up.Notable Quotes:Beatrice: I'd rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man swear he loves me.Claudio: Bait the hook well: this fish will bite.Benedict: That a woman conceived me, I thank her; that she brought me up, I likewise give her most humble thanks; all women shall pardon me…I will live a bachelor.Friar: That what we have we prize not to the worth whiles we enjoy it; but being Jack'd and lost, why, then we rack the value…Much can be gleaned from this short play! Trust plays a part in all relationships. One's inner circle must be made up of trusted people. Don Pedro's had an unsavory character. Impulsiveness is an issue for Claudio, who believes without giving Hero a chance to defend herself. Don John knows that people tend to believe the worst, especially with a set-up visual. In today's episode, we are exploring how Shakespeare was influenced by The Book of the Courtier by Baldassare Castiglione as he was writing Much Ado About Nothing. We'll discuss how close reading of both Shakespeare's play and Castiglione's Renaissance etiquette book uncovers layers of intertextuality and references to The Courtier in Shakespeare's writing. First, we'll discuss some parallels between The Courtier and Much Ado About Nothing. Then we will dig deeper into Book 3 of The Courtier and how its messages on joking, jesting, and laughter can be read in Much Ado About Nothing. We will also briefly discuss how Hero and Beatrice reflect The Courtier's ideal for Renaissance women.  Finally, we will closely examine the courtiers in Much Ado About Nothing and how the characters of Benedick, Claudio, Don Pedro, and Don John can be read through the lens of good (and bad) courtier behavior as outlined in The Courtier. Much Ado About Nothing – Act I, scene 1 Don Pedro, the Prince of Aragon, has come to visit the house of Leonato, governor of Messina. A cast of colorful characters is introduced.

«[Una tarde de julio, un soldado... estaba] sentado en el brocal de una fuente que llaman Pilar de Don Pedro... a un paso de la puerta trasera de la Capitanía General [de Granada, España].... [En eso]... cruzó la plazuela... una pobre vieja acartonada y encorvada, [arrastrando] una descomunal maleta de cartón... hacia la parte alta de la plaza, que... no es horizontal sino en pendiente.   »Al pasar por delante del soldado... la vieja... dejó de arrastrar la maleta y se sentó en ella... frente por frente de la puerta de la Capitanía, desde [donde] la contemplaba el capitán Trompetas.... Viendo al recluta... [el capitán] le gritó...:   »—¡Soldado! ... ¿Está usted... libre de servicio y no está ya ayudando a esa venerable anciana? ¿No tiene usted madre? ¿No tiene usted abuela? ... ¿Y no sabe que el vestir este honroso uniforme nos obliga a servir a nuestros mayores? Ahora mismo va usted a [tomar] esa maleta y a acompañar a esa dama hasta donde ella disponga.... »El soldado[, que se había puesto en posición de Firmes, agarró]... la maleta.... Parecía de plomo y no de cartón.... ¿Qué es lo que llevaría aquella bruja? »—¡Cuidado, mi alma! —exclamó la vieja.... Y... no te apures... que vivo ahí cerquita y es una obra de caridad lo que estás haciendo, que no quedará sin recompensa.... »Aquello no era una calle; era una cuesta infernal.... Un tropezón, y la maleta cayó al suelo.... [No pudo volver a] ponérsela al hombro... sino irla arrastrando colgada de una mano, luego de la otra, y así sucesivamente mientras seguían subiendo y la calle se empinaba más y más.... Y lo peor era que media docena de perros... habían acudido... olisqueando la maleta y metiéndose a cada paso entre las piernas del soldado.... »[Después de un breve descanso,] siguió su Calvario... [sólo que ahora los seguían] dos docenas de perros. [El] sol... había al parecer derretido algo del contenido de la maleta, porque comenzó a transpirar unas gotitas que los canes olisqueaban y hasta lamían con [gusto].... »El soldado se maliciaba que la bruja llevaría chorizos sin permiso sanitario, de esos que hacen con burros y mulos muertos.... »—... ¡Morcilla os he de echar! —[les] prometió la vieja [a los perros], confirmando las sospechas [del soldado].... [Cuando llegaron finalmente a su casa, ella le dijo al soldado:] »—Anda, deja eso aquí—.... y añadió: —Toma, ahí tienes tu recompensa. Son del tiempo de los moros, y ahí abajo... cualquier anticuario te dará lo menos [quinientas pesetas] por cada una.... »Entusiasmado... el soldado... bajó a toda velocidad [con las trece moneditas doradas].... El primer mercader... miró aquellas sucias monedas con asombro [y dijo:] »—¿Para qué me traes esto a mí? Míralas, [no son sino pesetas que no tienen ningún valor]...»1 ¡Qué decepción la del pobre soldado en este cuento del escritor español Julián Gállego en su obra titulada Nuevos cuentos de la Alhambra! Gracias a Dios, el siguiente consejo del apóstol Pablo viene como anillo al dedo para los que alguna vez hayamos sentido lo mismo: «Todo lo que hagan, háganlo de buena gana, como si estuvieran sirviendo al Señor Jesucristo y no a la gente. Pues ya saben que, en recompensa, el Señor les dará parte en la herencia....
