Coming of age story? Sexual awakening? Road trip movie? These all characterize Alfonso Cuarón's tale of two young men and one women whose lives intersect for a brief period one summer… kind of. While this film displays a keen understanding of convention it constantly subverts expectations and values along and becomes something all the more charming, touching, challenging, and political at heart. Two future superstars, Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna alongside Maribel Verdu, propel this still iconoclastic film to a rare stature alongside the best of Mexican cinema. Welcome to Uncut and Unrated, SITC's version of the re-release. Instead of a straight up re-post of an older episode, we're giving you the podcast equivalent of a Director's Cut. SITC Uncut and Unrated includes everything we would have kept in - the digressions, the truly cringe-worthy anecdotes, and the content our paranoia convinced us would get us cancelled. LISTEN AT YOUR OWN RISK. In the meantime, SITC is banking content like good little podcasters. Keep your ears open and your eyes peeled for all-new episodes dropping soon! We hope you enjoy the Uncut and Unrated version of Religious and Raunchy, one of our favorite episodes to date. ---- Heresy alert! Please be advised this episode contains some serious sacrilege. We're wrapping up a month of early 2000s prestige pictures that Nick potentially owned on DVD with the quintessential modern classic, 2006's “Babel”! Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi joined a competitive race for Best Supporting Actress against Abigail Breslin's Rick James inspired dance moves, a scandalous Blanchett shoving Judi Dench into a credenza and a Dreamgirl, and I am telling you I might have given it to Adriana Barraza that year for what she did in that desert! Cate spends much of her time on the floor in Morocco but she and Brad Pitt get one of the best scenes in the movie over a makeshift bedpan. Plus we get a Best Featured Ensemble moment from Hassan's wife, some great child acting, Gael Garcia Bernal giving pure chaos in a sedan, one incredibly confusing continuity error and a sampler platter of great music along the way. Pablo Larraín has approached the legacy of Augusto Pinochet from several angles over the course of his filmography, but never quite as directly as in his latest, EL CONDE. And yet even when casting the Chilean dictator as his protagonist, Larraín seems less interested in the real man — who, as far as we know, is not an undying vampire — than what he represents about power, manipulation, and history's ongoing cycle thereof. We talk through our thoughts about how that plays out in EL CONDE, before bringing back Larraín's NO, a film that approaches Pinochet with more historical fidelity and less overt cynicism, but a similar interest in political deceit, compromised resistances, and what it takes to strike back at a dictator. And in Your Next Picture Show we recommend a couple of new releases with ties to this week's pairing: the Chilean documentary THE ETERNAL MEMORY and the Gael Garcia Bernal biopic CASSANDRO. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about NO, EL CONDE, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Today I'm talking to Ellen Arden. She's a makeup artist who helped create the completely original world of Marvel's WEREWOLF BY NIGHT. Just when we think we've seen it all — a movie comes along that takes an old form and re-shapes it in such a different way that it's suddenly thrilling/really exciting…in this instance, I'm talking about WEREWOLF BY NIGHT. It's a crazy experiment by Marvel Studios, and the directorial debut of composer Michael Giacchino. Gael Garcia Bernal stars along with a flawless cast of actors. It's both beautiful homage to the black & white Universal monster movies of old, and a genre mashup. The result is an action-horror film that feels like AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON meets THE HATEFUL EIGHT. Ellen who created a murderer's row of faces for this film. Because in this rogue's gallery, all of our character's faces and war paint are how we meet them, and ultimately how we understand them. She's a master makeup artist whose other credits include: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.3, HAWKEYE, FEAR STREET, & OZARK. It's a great talk! Learn more about your ad choices. As Disney digs further and further into the backlog of the Marvel properties that they purchased back in 2009, they've released shows about such characters as Black Panther, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight. As Halloween approaches in 2022, a one shot television special appeared on Disney+ called WEREWOLF BY NIGHT based off the comic book that first appeared in 1972. Using the old Universal Monster Movie production values, the show brought back nostalgia for what was a brand new episode in the Marvel Universe. With the death of Ulysses Bloodstone, five monster hunters are called to the Bloodstone estate in hopes to find one of them worthy enough to inherit the talisman known as the Bloodstone. The powerful weapon would make them more powerful than most of the monsters they would be hunting. But there is a wrinkle. To claim the Bloodstone, the five must not only fight a monster, but they also may have fight each other. Directed by Michael Giacchino and written by Heather Quinn and Peter Cameron, the show stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Laura Donnelly, among others. The episode premiered October 7, 2022 in preparation for Halloween. Your co-hosts take a look at this interesting inclusion to the Marvel Universe and the reintroduction to beloved characters from the past within the comic canon.

Despite its relative financial success and reviews that are more "mixed" than bad, M. Night Shyamalan has become such a FH all-star, that we had to check out Old: The Beach that Olds People. (As Dan is fond of saying, "Don't get hung up on our name.") Unsurprisingly, it gave us a ton to chew on. Please don't be mad at us just cause we don't think it's a masterpiece, Blank Check buddies. Maybe y'all should skip this one.
