What a treat to have pioneering mathematics and statistics whizz, Alison Harcourt, join us on the show this week with her son, Pierre. Alison is 95 years old this year and only recently retired from lecturing and tutoring, a day before her 90th birthday. She really is an Australian treasure. Alison's life started in Colac where her father was a doctor. She remembers the declaration of World War II on a sunny, Sunday morning. She spent some time at Colac High School and boarding school, which was pretty isolating, before beginning her academic life at the University of Melbourne. Then it was off to the London School of Economics where she was pretty much head-hunted to return home to partner with Professor Ron Henderson on Australia's first statistical study of poverty in Australia, out of which came the Henderson Poverty Line, a standard used by researchers for years to come. Alison never had a problem with mathematics, never any difficulty. Apparently, it runs in the family on the female side. Her life advice is to 'keep going, keep active' and 'keep in touch with others, as much as you can'. We hope you enjoy Alison's story and we thank her and Pierre for joining us on the show this week.Alison's t-shirt reads 'Never underestimate an old woman with a mathematics degree'. Ever wondered how night shift workers manage their health and find a semblance of normalcy while the rest of the world sleeps? In our latest episode, my dear friend Roger Sutherland, a law enforcement officer with heaps of wisdom, joins the conversation to unpack the less discussed aspects of nocturnal work life. We celebrate the post-Easter chocolate indulgences (guilt-free, of course!), while also sharing tips that have helped us manage weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle despite our topsy-turvy schedules. Plus, we open the lines to your burning questions about shift work, sleep, and how to thrive when your work clock is out of sync with the sun.Our night-time narrative takes us on a journey from the quiet streets of Hastings to the lively dairy farms of Colac. We share the hilarious yet eye-opening escapades of Bert, who dodged the law during early morning shifts, and Simon, whose dedication to his cows epitomizes the commitment of those who work while the world is at rest. But it's not all fun and games; we pay respect to the unsung heroes of the night, including emergency veterinary teams, and dive into the pressing concern of sleep anxiety amongst paramedics – with a retired ICU paramedic shedding light on the toll of decades spent on the front lines.Wrapping up, we take a hard look at the work-family tightrope walked by shift workers like Danny in security and FIFO miners in Australia's rugged West. We share heartfelt stories of balancing the scales of work commitments and home life, alongside the genuine struggles and victories that come with the territory. It's a candid wrap-up of the extreme adjustments and health implications of shift work from those living it every day. And remember, our community conversation continues bi-weekly, with your experiences and insights driving it forward – catch us on our website or slide into our DMs on Instagram @a_healthy_shift.Support the show YOU CAN FIND ME AT Website Facebook Instagram LinkedIn YouTube COACHING One2One Coaching One Off Consults ________________________ FREE E-BOOK - “The best way to eat on Night shift” IN-HOUSE SEMINARS - Enquire Here _____________________ Disclaimer: Roger Sutherland is not a doctor or a medical professional. Ryan Maloney was in high spirits when this interview was recorded on Thursday Dec 14th. He was looking forward to a big book of eight rides at Eagle Farm but fate saw him in a hospital bed in the early hours of Saturday morning. Anybody who has suffered a kidney stone episode will know that there are few more painful experiences. He's over the trauma and keen to get back to work. Ryan reviews his fortuitous decision to leave Victoria. He talks about the upward spiral of Queensland racing, and the newly refurbished Gold Coast track. Ryan talks of the beginning of his association with Toby Edmonds. He remembers a later trip Toby made with brilliant filly Houtzen. The jockey talks of early life in Colac and the scant racing background in his family. He talks of his first apprenticeship to local trainer Mark Young. Ryan hasn't forgotten his inauspicious riding debut at Horsham and the magic of his very first win. He looks back on his journey from Colac to Flemington and an apprenticeship to Robert Smerdon. Ryan recalls his first metropolitan win and a productive association with trainer Robbie Griffiths. He acknowledges some of his favourite horses from the Griffiths yard. He looks back fondly on a brief association with champion sprinter Nature Strip. Ryan remembers a great winning run with the Jamie Edwards trained Sertorius. He reflects openly on his positive test to a banned stimulant and the resultant four months on the sidelines. He gives a valid reason for his misdemeanour. Ryan looks back on the wonderful diversion he stumbled upon during his time out. He landed a role in the popular movie “Ride Like A Girl”, and loved the experience. He talks about his instant rapport with trainer David Vandyke, and the wonderful horse at the centre of the new partnership. Ryan takes us through his journey with the massively talented Alligator Blood. He talks of a Sydney stint with the Neasham stable and his partnership with quality mare Sunshine In Paris. Ryan speaks of his association with Isotope and the highs and lows that came with it. The jockey speaks of the Gollan trained Skirt The Law, the filly to give him a Magic Millions triumph. He talks of a Doomben Cup win for Team Snowden. Ryan pays tribute to wife Shaylee and daughters Stella and Isla who love the Queensland sunshine as much as he does. It's a good yarn with a 38 year old jockey whose move to Queensland has been career defining.

Form Preview - Bet365 Colac - 10th February 2023 with Glenn Ingram
This is a true tale of theft, drugs and a bakery. Jordan Dittloff made headlines in 2015 for stealing $277,993.58 from 47 clients of his travel agency Ace Travel in Victoria. As an award winning travel agency and a community leader in regional Victoria, Jordan's crimes rocked the Colac community. Many, including his 70 year old future mother in law, lost thousands of dollars saved up for their 'trip of a lifetime'. Trading insolvent, Jordan effectively ran a travel ponzi scheme relying on future holiday bookings to pay for past holiday bookings. Eventually the scheme collapsed and Jordan disappeared, sparking media attention. After 2 weeks he handed himself into police and was bailed pending a court hearing for his crimes. At the same time, Jordan ran a second business: drug dealing in Melbourne, profits from which he used to fund his own drug habit. Whilst on bail, Jordan was arrested as part of Victoria Police drug sting operation in a Melbourne alleyway. In the end the court sentenced Jordan to jail 3 years (20 months non-parole) as well as granting compensation orders for his victims to be repaid. In prison Jordan completed a business degree and in the five years since release is completing a post-graduate law degree and has repaid ~$35,000 to victims. He has worked at the same bakery since release. He now credits his time in prison as a catalyst for reform and is building a drug and alcohol free life of discipline and responsibility unlike his behaviour displayed before prison. John Newman is the savvy entrepreneur who pioneered the glory of theatre restaurant in Australia, with the establishment of the iconic Tikki & John's in Melbourne. The venue fast became an institution in the city and a haven for a stellar cast of performers. With wife Tikki Taylor, he founded an entertainment dynasty spawning further theatre dining experiences such as Dracula's, Cafe Crypt and Crazyhouse.John Newman is a Geelong boy whose parents were publicans. He was born to perform and garnered early experiences entertaining hotel guests. He joined the Geelong Musical Comedy Company, a flourishing amateur group whose members also included John's brother Bill, Ernie Bourne and Barry Crocker. His success in comic and singing roles with that company, prompted him to embark on show business as a profession. He joined an outfit calling itself, rather ambitiously The South Pacific Film and Television Company, which planned to hit the high spots with a grand tour of Victorian country areas. The variety show, in which John did comedy, magic and his impressions of Groucho Marx and other stars of the day, played Geelong, Colac and Camperdown. He was next a member of the Blind Institute Concert Party, which performed everywhere in Victoria in one - and - two night stands, raising money for the institute. John stayed with the unit for two years, and then he left to go into the chorus of the J. C. Williamson Song of Norway. The run of Song of Norway was followed by a revival of Annie Get Your Gun, with Evie Hayes and Hayes Gordon, and John then went into the chorus of South Pacific, where he met Joyce Taylor (Tikki),Tikki Taylor had studied dancing at the Jenny Brennan Academy and appeared on stage for the first time in a juvenile role in Blue Mountain Melody, an Australian musical which starred Cyril Ritchard and Madge Elliott. After pursuing a classical ballet career she joined J.C. Williamsons as a show dancer, her first show being The Desert Song with Max Oldaker. Then followed Rose Marie, White Horse Inn, No, No, Nanette, The Girl Friend, Follow The Girls and Oklahoma, in which she understudied three roles, eventually playing the lead comedienne, Ado Annie.John and Tikki combined both their professional and private lives working in the same shows. They formed an act and toured it through the U.K. for eighteen months with top Australian magician The Great Levant covering England, Scotland and Wales. After that, they toured the U.S. Army bases in Europe.Back in London they saw the latest American musical hit The Pajama Game, and John knew that Tikki would be perfect for the comedy-dancing role of Gladys Hotchkiss. They rushed back to Australia and with the support of choreographer Betty Pounder and stage director Ian Roberts, Tikki managed to persuade the JCW management that it was not necessary to import an American actress for the role. This seminal production embraced an all-Australian company including Toni Lamond, Jill Perryman and John's brother Bill Newman.John worked in the chorus of The Pajama Game and joined Tikki in subsequent productions of Can-Can, For Amusement Only and Grab Me A Gondola. Tikki and John raised a family, pursued television appearances and then Tikki made a comeback to the stage as Minnie Fay in Hello Dolly.Television claimed John for a while guided by the famous American entrepreneur Larry K. Nixon; then a stint as Victorian manager for NLT Productions, and producer of The Ray Taylor Show on ATV0 in its early days. John was later Company manager for the Moscow Circus before he and Tikki made their decision to go into the restaurant business.Tikki Taylor and John Newman had show business in their blood. Both were already entertaining as children. When they met and married, they changed the course of theatre history in Melbourne. It is indeed an entertaining life! The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Whooshkaa, Spotify and Apple podcasts. Or from wherever you access your favourite podcasts.
