Going to the Melbourne Flower Festival last year was what originally inspired me to host my Melbourne Comedy Festival show in a beautiful, bespoke space this year. I went back on Sunday and it was just as beautiful as I remembered, but I didn't enjoy it as much because I was busy worrying about ticket sales and money and comparing myself to my peers. I'm having an objectively great festival. It's only been one weekend, but I've already sold more tickets across the run than I did in the whole of Perth Fringe World. I sold 251 in the first five shows alone. That's great! Those are great numbers. And I'm still not happy. Last year when I didn't do a show at any festivals, and instead just worked a normal job and paid my bills - that was one of the happiest years of my life. It'd be easy to romanticise it and conclude that actually comedy is the thing that's making me upset here, but I know that isn't the full story. I know that the only reason I was able to let go of the grinding and striving for a year and be happy was that for that whole year I was dreaming of this time I'm living in right now. Every day I drove the bus down the Great Ocean Road, when I was done talking about the stuff out the window, I would put the music on and drift off into fantasies of this run. The first show. The last show. The night I finally film it. The ending. New jokes... those fantasies got me through the year, and made it a very happy one, and now I'm here in that imagined future, and I'm struggling to enjoy it because I'm always wanting more! The irony is not lost on me... but I am having a nice time, I promise.
Local community groups are calling for large tourist buses to be banned in certain pockets of the Great Ocean Road in an effort to protect local wildlife, in this edition of The Conversation Hour we look at just how serious the issue is becoming and discuss the broader issue of the impact of over-tourism on the environment. We also debrief on the ACCC report into supermarkets, discover how video games are helping neurodivergent children and discuss why men need to cry.
Samantha Ohlsen, a Sydney based landscape photographer with a 17-year military background, shares how photography became a means of healing and creative expression. After years as an Army Nursing Officer in war zones like Afghanistan, she retired and started immersing herself in the tranquillity of nature & setting up a wedding photography business.. Sam discusses how landscape photography provides an essential counterbalance to her past experiences, offering a deep connection to the natural world. We discuss the therapeutic effects of exploring Australia's Great Ocean Road, her structured approach to mastering composition, and the ongoing challenge of balancing technical precision with artistic freedom. She also shares insights into her latest ambitious project—a comprehensive guidebook documenting Australia's diverse landscapes. Through her work, Sam hopes to inspire others to embrace photography as both an art form and a means of personal transformation. I hope you enjoy the show. It's time to hit the road again after hosting the GABS Hottest 100 Countdown livestream as Will and James call into Noodledoof in Victoria's west.Founders Sam Rudolph and Alex Carr launched the brewpub and distillery with their partners in late 2019 – just before you-know-what hit – in Koroit, a small town a short drive inland from the western end of the Great Ocean Road.In the years since, they've gone on to create a genuinely distinctive operation in a region that was pretty much barren land for local craft beer before they came along. With Sam still making his way back from a beer festival in Melbourne on the day of our visit, we sat down with Alex to hear how the former homebrewing housemates from Adelaide ended up reuniting as brewers and distillers. We find out how they turned a former mechanics in the town's main street into a community hub, where the unique name comes from, and why they've been determined to create a brand like little else in Australia – certainly among breweries found so far from any major cities.Alex tells us about their mission to work with and celebrate local producers, foraging for native ingredients in the rich ecosystem of nearby Tower Hill whose Gunditjmara name, Koroitj, gives their adopted home its name, and creating unique spirits such as a wonderful potato vodka that pays homage to the Irish community that settled in the area in the mid-19th century. The show features great insights and inspiration for those looking to build a community around a regional brewery, and the rewards that can come from sticking to your beliefs. We also hear from Anne Gigney, founder and co-director of The Distillers Institute, ahead of March's IBD Convention in Hobart.Prior to the chat with Alex, we reflect briefly on this year's Hottest 100 results, the eye-catching merger between Hawkers and White Bay, and our feature on globe-trotting Aussie brewer Nick Galton-Fenzi.Start of segments: 10:54 – Alex Carr (part one) 30:16 – Ann Gigney 38:11 – Alex Carr (part two)Relevant links: Noodledoof GABS H100 of 2024 Livestream GABS H100 of 2024: Analysis Hawkers & White Bay Merge Aussie Exports: Nick Galton-Fenzi Have You Done A Rallings? In this week's episode, we head along the Great Ocean Road to Aireys Inlet for a trip down memory lane. It's our first time back in the studio for a few weeks, so there is a little unhinged madness as we catch up, as well as ‘more than a couple' of side quests as we revisit some of our childhood obsessions, explore Split Point Lighthouse, and take a peek into the life of convict William Buckley and how his dash to freedom left a marked impression on all of us without us even knowing it. For more information on today's topics, links, photographs, and more, head over to the show notes section on the website: www.ifthesetreescouldtalk.com.au.
My wife and I stood at the edge of the world—or at least what felt like it—squinting through the murk and sea spray to snap photos of a decommissioned lighthouse. Less like some beacon of hope, its white tower loomed like a ghost, haunting the craggy cliffs of coastal Victoria and my vacation prospects. We'd arrived at the sleepy Victorian coastal town of Port Fairy expecting sunshine, a pleasant breeze—and if not asking too much—maybe a kangaroo or two bounding in silhouette against the sunset. Instead, a spectrum of misery lay before us: wind that could strip the paint from a car and rain in erratic, bipolar bursts. I have just published episode 104 of my Wild Nature Photography Podcast. In this episode, I discuss my thoughts on the new Canon EOS R5 MK2 camera now that I have had an opportunity to use the camera in the Arctic for several weeks of intense photography (Eastern Greenland and South Western Iceland). I first tested the camera back in September in Australia over three days of landscape photography down the Great Ocean Road. During this shoot, I was photographing only from a tripod and had not yet shot handheld with the camera in my preferred polar environment. My initial impressions from this shoot in Australia were all positive, and I was very keen to get the camera up to Greenland to see how it performed. After shooting with the camera in Eastern Greenland and Iceland for the last three weeks, I have (perhaps surprisingly) concluded that this camera is not for me. The files are excellent at low to moderate ISO (ISO800 and below) but fall far short of those from the EOS R3 at ISO800 and above. Since most of my photography is at moderate to high ISO (typically 800 and above), this is a significant factor in my decision-making process. Of more importance, however, is that the ergonomics of the EOS R5MK2 just don't suit my size hands or my style of shooting. It is a wonderful camera that will undoubtedly make many people happy - but it isn't for me. True story! Mike's hand rested gently on Brendan Hunt's (aka Coach Beard from Ted Lasso) butt for roughly 3-5 seconds. A moment he will always remember and one Brendan may wish to forget. Join us in this episode for this and other stories from our time in the great Australian state of Victoria during our travels for Women's World Cup 2023. We spot some koalas in their natural habitat, some kangaroos in a particularly peculiar place, and expand our footy experiences at one of the greatest Aussie rules football matches the AFL has seen this season! Speaking of which, we may have butchered the explanation of the ending of that game. Bombers were up by 1, then down by 5, but then... well, listen to the episode to find out! Foot(y)notes: If you're curous about the AFL after hearing this one, check out the truest professional 'footy' league in the world. This is where to guarantee yourself a kangaroo sighting. And here's where to start your koala 'hunting' adventure. Drive further up the road at your leisure.
