Welcome to the Nancy Ray Book Club, where every month I share a book I'm reading, and three big takeaways that I have from that book. And you can always find more information about the books I'm reading at nancyray.com/bookclub, where you can join in reading them with me. Now, I've got a quick update on the book club for the rest of 2021. I did not realize in the beginning of this year that I would be needing a six month sabbatical and that I'd be taking off six months from work and this podcast and social media, which simply means I'm going to be putting the Book Club on hold until 2022. Fighting Forward, this interview, is going to be my last 2021 Book Club episode, and all the other books I did not get to are simply going to be pushed back to 2022. I just want to thank you for your grace in this. Listen, you know, my approach with this book club is very relaxed anyway—read what you'd like to read, participate as you can. If a book doesn't sound interesting, you don't have to read it with us. I personally hope to do a lot of reading while I'm away, but realistically I have a newborn baby and three other children. So I just appreciate your grace towards me, as well, while I kind of redirect and do things a little differently to serve my work and my play and my life and my family and you guys, as best as I can during the season of my life. Today, I have a conversation with a friend and author Hannah Brencher. Hannah is such a breath of fresh air. She is a writer, a TED speaker, an online educator with a heart for building leaders. She has written three books. First, If You Find This Letter. Second, Come Matter Here. And third, which we're talking about today, Fighting Forward. It has been exactly what I have needed to read. It's incredible. Her heart for change and for fighting for the life that God has for you is something that you do not want to miss. I think you're going to love our conversation today about how you can fight forward in your own life. For the full show notes, head to nancyray.com/podcast/130.

"God never leaves you nor forsakes you.” I've heard that before. “Jesus will leave the 99 to come after you.” I've heard that one too. Meanwhile, fear creeps up when life hurls a season of loneliness our way, and poof! Churchy sayings hold as much weight as thin air. Believe it or not, God is cheering us on and inviting us to thrive amidst the loneliness. Yes, it's weird and scary, but this emptiness is a safe space where you get to hear the God of everything speak the loudest. WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT NOT SO BY MYSELF: One of the biggest lies we've learned to embrace is that we're alone in our pain. It keeps us trapped in a cycle of guilt, shame, and isolation so that even when we're struggling, we know how to put on a brave face and pretend everything is just fine. Peyton Garland is here for exactly none of that. She has lived with the agony of isolation, both physically and mentally, and is here to show us that just when we think we can't make it another second, there will always be a hope we can hold on to. With her approachable sense of humor and deeply rooted faith, Peyton offers us a way through our pain by sharing her own powerful story of redemption. —Wendi Nunnery, author of Good Enough: Learning to Let Go of Perfect for the Sake of Holy. Having had the chance to sit down across the table from Peyton and get to know her better, I can tell you confidently that she is for you. She is a cheerleader, already on the sidelines of your story- ready to root you on as you push further into what God has for you. Get ready to journey with her through the highs and lows of what it looks like to chase after God, deal with loneliness, and learn how to sit in the often-uncomfortable rhythms of faith and trust. There is a beauty and a transformation that only comes from learning to become comfortable with the uncomfortable - Peyton has been through that transformation and this book is proof. —Hannah Brencher, author of If You Find This Letter: My Journey to Find Purpose Through Hundreds of Letters to Strangers and Come Matter Here, TED Talk speaker, and founder of The World Needs More Love Letters." ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Peyton Garland is a web content writer for Family Christian, Christian Cinema, and Dove.org. An Atlanta lover and avid traveler, she enjoys hunting down the best hiking spots, dilapidated churches, and homegrown pizzerias with her husband and their two furry babies, Alfie and Daisy. One of my favorite people ever gets to join me on the show this week! Author Hannah Brencher's writing has resonated with me an incredible amount, perhaps more so than any author. I'm not sure if it's the Enneagram 4 wing 3 in both of us or the fact that we both met our spouses online, but at times reading her writing made it feel like we're kindred spirits. I also went through her Summer Writing Intensive, which was so instrumental in me getting the actual writing of my book started. We've been trying to schedule this conversation for a while, but between a global pandemic and Hannah becoming a first-time mother, we hadn't been able to until now. But this was such a great conversation! We talked about writing, how to build and maintain better habits, how creatives — and other people in general — can fight against comparison and defeat the lies we are told. We also dispelled some myths surrounding online dating and talked about her new book, "Fighting Forward: Your Nitty Gritty Guide to Beating the Lies That Hold You Back," which comes out in early January 2021. If you've never read any of Hannah's work before, her first two books If You Find This Letter and Come Matter Here are fantastic. I'm also a subscriber to her Monday email list, The Monday Club, and it's a great source of motivation and inspiration every Monday morning. You can sign up for that and find more of her work on her website, hannahbrenchercreative.com. Be sure to give Hannah a follow on Instagram as well — @hannahbrencher You can watch this entire conversation on YouTube! Starting at 2 p.m. CT on Oct. 12, the full video of our conversation will go live on the In No Hurry Podcast YouTube page — https://bit.ly/3jRxPkG Like Hannah, Every Monday morning I send out an email to my mailing list that includes a devotional and some scriptural truths to start your week. Today we chat with author & ted talk speaker Hannah Brencher. Hannah discusses the benchmarks of calling yourself a writer and how the not knowing is tied to insecurities and what-ifs in her experience. "What if I'm not good at the thing I love more than anything in this world?" She describes the importance of having an internal confidence and knowing that "that's why you're here and that's why you're doing the thing and if you didn't do it tomorrow, nobody else's heart would be broken, but your own heart would be broken and that should be enough." We also discuss: -How she deals with getting 1 star reviews and where she believes most of them come from. -The fact that you can't please everyone and why that's okay. -How she dealt with a "Hannah Brencher Sucks" blog and other criticisms and the good that has come from responding to them in kindness. -The pitfalls of the "power of anonymity" of the internet -The importance of not looking to others for validation and yet feeling like your work is important -Self-promotion and why it matters if you are your authentic self -Why she moved across the country because of a friend from Twitter and why it wasn't easy -Thoughts on becoming addicted to what it feels like to be seen by and applauded by other people -Why you have to decide what you're made of and what's worth fighting for -"What do I do when the momentum slows down, because it will -Why consistency and creating content (even when we don't feel like it) matters -Why discipline is important & how it led to her becoming passionate about writing -Why she does not believe in writer's block -Why perfection is crippling, irrelevant, and a waste of time. -How to be patient when things "might not work out" -The importance of instilling hope in other people -Why you shouldn't put up "phantom barriers" or make fear based decisions       Hannah Brencher is a writer, TED speaker, and online educator with a heart for building leaders. I’m slowly learning as I get older that multi tasking, while it’s possible, isn’t actually something that’s most effective.

Today we have Hannah Brencher. Hannah is a writer and a speaker. She has been on the TED talk stage, written two books, and has been featured on Oprah, The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today, and dozens of other publications. I am SO excited to share today's episode with you all today, and it's the type of conversations that inspired me to start a podcast. Whenever I had a great coffee date, there were multiple times I wish I could record it, bottle it up, and share it with friends, and I'm so glad this one is recorded. In today's episode, Hannah talks about her newest book, Come Matter Here, and gives us a behind-the-scenes look at her writing process, she also talks about anxiety, depression, social media, and digging into scripture. The meat of the conversation today is about the importance of building your character and a firm foundation, not a following, not a platform, not a brand. Hannah gets really honest and vulnerable with us, and I appreciate her wisdom in that success and fame in this world will not satisfy.
