S02E23 The Story of A Disappearance and An Appearance by M R James

THE STORY OF A DISAPPEARANCE AND AN APPEARANCE by M R JamesThe Story of a Disappearance and an Appearance is one of the few M R James stories actually set at Christmas. He was well-known for reading out his stories at Christmas, but few of them are actually set over the festive period. It was first published the June 4, 1913 issue of the Cambridge Review. It then appeared in his anthology A Thin Ghost and Others in 1919.  First of all some explanations of words which may be strange to some listeners. Bands are a kind of white tie worn by Anglican clergymen. A bagman is a commercial traveller, a salesman or pedlar. Clearly he'll be late home if he's still on the road on Christmas Eve.  So what happened? It appears that Uncle Henry got murdered, his head bashed in and his corpse buried in the sandpit. My reading was that the two Punch & Judy men killed him. These two who were masquerading as Italians but who were English rogues really. The bagman told W R that he had not seen any suspicious characters on the road: no gipsies, tramps or wandering sailors. This all happened not long after the Napoleonic wars and out of work sailors and soldiers had to wander the countryside looking for a living. No Help for Heroes for them. The bagman did see a most wonderful Punch and Judy show. These travelling showmen or 'carnies' as such folk would later be called in the USA are inherently dubious, so it's no wonder that they would murder an innocent clergyman.  It is heresy to say anything against the great M R James, but I would only observe that he throws a few 'portents' and 'omens' into the story that seem to have no real bearing on the narrative. They aren't clues or anything, unless I'm missing some subtlety. I mean the owl that wakes our man W R from sleep, the Toby Dog running off and howling, the organ wolving during the funeral and the odd ringing of the bell. These are all signs that something unnatural and eerie is afoot. There is also mention of the bier being put out by mistake and the moth-eaten pall taken out and having to be folded on Christmas Day. Most inappropriate, but they seem more what we would have called 'dungeon dressing' in my D&D days—something to create atmosphere that is not essential to the plot. But again, I may be missing something. The mention of the Toby Dog reminds me of Cole Hawkins and the Toby Dog in John Masefield's Box of Delights that I will be re-reading, or at least watching the 1980s BBC version this Christmas.  Punch and Judy is a ghastly tale of murder played out for children and so it has its own horror lurking not far below the surface. It seems that the dead Uncle Henry came as visitation to the two murderous Punch & Judy chaps, like a proper vengeful ghost and cause the first to die of fright inside the Punch and Judy set-up, while the other runs to the sandpit, breaks his neck and reveals the resting place of Uncle Henry, up until now hidden.  Mr Bowman the inn keeper seems only there for comic effects, and to show that Uncle Henry was rather serious and straight-laced.  I think that M R James has put in the comic inn-keeper and the portents and omens to entertain the audience rather than to drive the narrative. W R also at one point alludes to a vague reason why he's writing everything out in longhand, but this is well before anything supernatural or even out of the ordinary occurs. Again, I can't help but suspect that this is just to gee-up the reader because it comes to not much. James has a way or inserting the jarringly weird into his stories, and it is this weirdness that really unsettles the reader. We have it in the flapping shirt and advancing figure in Whistle And I'll Come To You, and the crawling figure in The Mezzotint. E F Benson does it a bit too. Up until these late Victorian/Edwardian writers, the ghost story is naturalistic. Supernatural elements intrude cleanly into an otherwise normal (if at... Support this podcast

M R James is known as the father of the English ghost story. He wasn’t the first to write ghost stories, but he was the finest of his generation whose work continues to be published and re-presented as TV shows and radio plays. He was born in 1862 at Goodnestone in Kent. His father was a clergyman and was rector of Livermere in Suffolk. East Anglia features as the setting of many of M R James’s stories.  James’s ‘proper job’ was as an academic and he had a distinguished academic career at King’s College in Cambridge where he became dead in 1889 and finally provost in 1905. He was awarded a doctorate in literature by Cambridge in 1895 and honorary doctorates by Trinity College Dublin and St. Andrews University in Scotland. He moved to become provost of the famous Eton College, supplier of many prime ministers of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, in 1918. He was a trustee of the British Museum from 1925. In 1893, James began his tradition of reading ghost stories at Christmas by candlelight to a hushed circle of his colleagues and friends. His geographical background in East Anglia is evident in many of his stories, as well as his bicycling trips to Europe. Many of his heroes are fumbling academics and Latin and old manuscripts and church architecture also features strongly. He clearly had a knowledge of the occult and demonology, though he was not known to be a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, as were other writers of ghost stories such as Algernon Blackwood and Arthur Machen.  Oh Whistle And I’ll Come To You, My Lad! Is the title of a poem by the Scottish poet Robbie Burns, and James borrowed this title though Burn’s story concerns a jilted lover.  Perhaps he borrowed it because the central item in the story is the ancient whistle found in the sand covered ruins of the old abbey, which when blown, seems to summon the spirit that haunts the narrator. The Latin inscription: Quis est qui venit? Means ‘Who is this who comes?’ The other inscription around the plus sign, or cross, is a puzzle of a Latin proverb: Fur Flabis Flebis which means, ‘Thief, if you blow; you will weep.” And in one sense, though a finder, our man is a thief, and when he blows, he certainly does weep. It is the sheer weirdness of the ghost that is unnerving, and James is the master of this disturbing oddness which is not quite the same as Lovecraft’s Cosmic Horror in his weird tales or later Robert Aickman’s unnerving unnaturalness in his ghost stories. The closest parallel I find to James’s inexplicable and disturbing weirdness is in David Lynch’s movies, particularly Inland Empire and the Third Season of Twin Peaks. Support Us! 80: When Your MLM Won't Let You Promote Online...

Secret MLM Hacks Radio

What can you do when your MLM does not allow you to sell online or recruit online. They’re practically forbidding you to be on the internet, say their name online or drive ads to your MLM products.   WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR MLM FORBIDS YOU TO BE ONLINE   This is probably one of the biggest questions I get about MLM. People are shocked when I tell that my MLM lets me sell online.   The truth is, sometimes MLMs WILL let you say their name on the Internet.   But what do you do when:   Your MLM doesn't like it when you say their name on the Internet They say that you can't directly recruit online You can’t drive ads to your MLM product or sell online   I’m about to tell you the answer to that question…   This is the way that I've been able to leverage the Internet to increase my speed and the quality of my leads, without fighting against the rules of my MLM.   You might have to go over this a few times if it’s the first time you ever heard of some of these concepts - that's okay.   THIS is how I've been able to automate the systems in my MLM. We get two or three leads per day. People I’ve never met before, asking to join my downline.   THIS is how I do it online without being shady or weird. Without having to find some secret small little loophole that might close some day. This is how I do it.   If your MLM is telling you that you can't sell online or recruit online at all, that’s okay. JUST DON’T DO IT.   The answer is…   CREATE FRONT END OFFERS!   That way you're not directly recruiting or selling online. All you have to do is close them in the back. That's one of the things that I do.   HOW I RECRUIT ONLINE   I've been very, very careful to choose an MLM that lets me sell and recruit online. I can put their name on ads without getting in trouble.   Let's say you're a part of an MLM like that but you love it - that’s great.   I'm not encouraging you to leave it.   You can still create value for people in the MLM space if you can’t sell or recruit online. Have them COME TO YOU through front end offers. Then you close them afterwards. That's totally okay.   If you're openly like, "Hey, come join my downline." your MLM is probably going to have a problem with that.   "Hey, come buy my MLM products." They probably won’t be okay with that. I'm not saying that’s what you should do.   Do I ever mention the name of my MLM? NEVER!   The moment I start talking about the MLM I'm in, it taints all of this. People think that I'm just here to recruit them.   I'm telling you right now... If you LOVE what you're in, you stay in it!   You still use the internet to help you in your MLM without selling or recruiting online. What you do is, you create a paid prospecting product. You don't even have to say the name of your MLM.   I don't say the name of my MLM. You can still qualify people as subscribers and buyers by getting them to pay for something related to MLM.   Then BAM, you can go in and talk to that person afterwards. You got HOT leads!   You’re not saying, "Come join my MLM downline." MLM is not a fan of that. That's why I don't do it. That's not what I teach here.   HOW I SELL ONLINE   How do you recruit and sell online then? PAID PROSPECTING.   It's not challenging. It doesn't need to be crazy at all. There are some really easy products you can create that have a high value.   High value, low impact products for you. High value to them, low impact for you.   Those are fantastic ways to bring people to you. It helps you sift out the people who are the cheapos. The people that are never going to pay for anything. I don't want those people in my downline.   I want only those joining at the very top of the MLM. It shows me their mentality and how much they're going to work. It shows me that they're hungry and they actually want this.   If someone joins at the very bottom level, I don't even give them the bonuses that are in my offer. There have been multiple times I've reached out to people who have joined at the very bottom level. I've reached out to them and said, "Hey, out of respect for those who joined at the top, I cannot give you the bonuses unless you turn back around and join at the highest level."   You don't even need to create your paid prospecting products. Just assemble them. Go to YouTube, type in "How to succeed in MLM." Anything that pops up on YouTube is public domain. Grab the videos, put them in a members area and charge a few bucks.   You just seen to sift people out. That's the principle behind it. You’re pre-qualifying individuals.   Because they’re paying you and there's money coming in, you can afford to spend on ads. Which means your speed increases beyond anyone in your upline or downline. Whoever can spend the most to acquire a customer, wins.   PAID PROSPECTING ONLINE   So you can’t use:   A website Any broadcast communication method Mass mailing Telemarketing Anything of that nature   That's fine. Stop promoting your MLM.   If your MLM is yelling at you for that or they're telling you not to do that, DON’T DO IT.   Follow their rules. You still can make a podcast to do with MLM. Just don't say the name of your MLM. Talk about what you're learning and people will start reaching out to you.   "I'm learning a lot of stuff here. What MLM are you in?" That’s been happening to me for three years now.   This is Secret MLM Hacks, so how do you HACK the industry? You create offers in front so you don't have to talk about your MLM.   I had to do this in my old MLM. I was able to recruit online like crazy even through the MLM siad, "Don't talk about our product on the internet." and "Don't talk about recruiting on the internet."   If that's their viewpoint, that's okay. Work with what you've got. All you have to do is create one extra little offer. A paid prospecting funnel. Once you’ve pulled somebody in, talk to them afterwards.   You're not driving ads to something that says, "Join my MLM." That'll get you shut down.   Pull people in with paid prospecting then you can say to them, "Oh, by the way, I don't know if you want any soap or whatever." If they say, "Yeah, sure." Send them to your product funnel.   PAID PROSPECTING WILL HELP YOU RECRUIT ONLINE     Paid prospecting is an incredibly effective way of bringing people in the door. You get paid whether they join your downline or not. It gives you money for ads so that increases your speed.   You’ll outrun so many people in your upline and downline because they don't understand any of these principles.   You need to make your front end offer super sexy. Don't think about your limitations. Come up with a sexy offer then find a way to make it. It doesn’t need to take a lot of time. Time is not equivalent to value.   It would be really awesome if everyone in this group created ONE THING and shared it with everyone else. That way you’ll all have a cool front end offer but you only had to make one thing. That’s called crowd creating. Crowd creating products is a great way to do it. I crowd create products like an animal. I find a bunch of experts and say, "Hey, would you teach for 10-15 minutes how to use your expertise?"   A lot of them grabbed their phones and said, "This is how I do it." I got 15 people to do that, packaged it up. BAM, product. Real easy.   If somebody knows that what they're about to say is going to be used inside of a product, that’s a huge status increase for them. They usually do it for free because they’re getting to promote themselves to your audience.

In this podcast I explain how to build alliances and improve your reputation in business so people COME TO YOU and ASK you to do business with them. We're often told we're the average of the 5 people we surround ourselves with... but is that really the best way of looking at the world? “Want to connect on facebook? Add me on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/aleksander.vitkin In this podcast I am going to talk about how to build personal alliances for your business success and success in your personal life. When I started this business, when I started this whole journey 8 years ago I believed that you need to be able to figure everything out by yourself. You need to be able to do it all by yourself. Just figure out a business model, figure out what to do, figure out all the skills, just learn them yourself and be a true entrepreneur. That’s what I thought a true entrepreneur was and I would not get any help from anyone. I was just weird like that I guess. After that I have discovered all these self help books and I learned the principle of I become the average of the 5 people you surround yourself with. And what happened then is I had a mentor and I had results much quicker. So, then I discovered the next level. There is a level higher that allows you to get even more success in business. Not just surrounding yourself with peers, not just surrounding yourself with mentors, but going one step higher. So, one principle that I found, one technique that I found is building alliances. Find people in your life and get people in your life that will support you no matter what. Find people in your life to whatever takes people in your life who help you to get to where you want to be. And what do I mean by this? It is not just getting referrals in your business and it is not just improving your sales. What I mean is you are looking for people which you can call anytime and they will help you. You are looking for people who will talk behind your back and they will say good things about you. Why is this important? Let’s use the example of jobs. If you have a job and you are in big corporation and you always walk around and you say I am so awesome, look how much I have accomplished. I am so fantastic. I am so great. My skills are amazing. Look how much money I am making for the company. People are going to hate you. But, if you team up with someone. And your friends, you talk about each other to other people. You always give compliments about this person to other people over and over and over. That’s not bragging. That’s not fraud upon and what will happen is people will start saying good things about you, because someone else says it. And here is the good thing. This applies to business as well. If you use it in business and lots of people talk good things about you and someone things : “Well, I need to have something made.” And you are happened to be a supplier of that. People will come to you, because you are the person who people talk about. Now, I believe looking at the way business works right now, it is impossible to get sales, unless people are talking well about you. And not just one person, but groups of people. And once you start making groups of people who talk well about you, then you are able to get sales much easier, your business is able to grow much easier, you are able to find what you need much easier: employees, suppliers, whatever you need. Everything seems to come to you when people talk well about you. Instead of getting on calls and trying to do business with people who are super skeptical about you. They are like: “Oh, yeah. I have heard about you.” People always say good things about you. This makes your life as an entrepreneur much, much easier. This is where you want to get. This is the ultimate type of connection in my opinion that I have discovered so far. It is super, super powerful.
