Our guest today is Gabe Smith, the current CEO of Drums for Gracie Abrams Inc. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, now based in New York City, Gabe has also worked with incredible contemporary artists like Wet, Tei Shi, Eden, Frankie Cosmos, Kimbra and many more. Last summer, he opened for Taylor Swift and is about to rejoin that tour after some headline shows with Gracie Abrams. He's a busy guy! It took some finessing since we're both on tour, but we made it happen. I loved his picks, and I'm excited for you to hear this one. Please enjoy the top 5 records that shaped Gabe Smith into the sought-after, hardworking musician he is today. Cheers!

Episode 1 was a shitshow so we're back and better than ever. After finding out his #2020Wrapped was a complete disaster, Alex decides to redeem himself with some actual good music recommendations. Taking a trip down memory lane, Alex reflects on 15 new artists that he's discovered during quarantine. Does he have good taste? Who knows! Luckily, you get to be the judge of that, just make sure you don't tell him your honest opinion. Artists mentioned include: Maude Latour, Kacy Hill, Magdalena Bay, Jenn Champion, So Below, Valley, Dizzy, Orla Gartland, The Regrettes, Ralph, Bronze Avery, Hatchie, Kitten, Tei Shi, and Grant Claytor :) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/alex-bollington/support
Jehnny Beth, frontwoman of noise queens Savages and now a solo artist, leads the discussion with three thought-provoking and inspirational musicians. Kelly Lee Owens is one of the most exciting DJs and electronic producers right now, a Welsh musician who’s collaborated with the likes of St. Vincent, Bjork, Jenny Hval, and Jon Hopkins. Jessy Lanza is an an electronic songwriter, producer, and vocalist from Ontario, Canada. A former music teacher, she grew up playing piano and clarinet, before going on to study jazz and eventually finding her feet in electronic music. And finally, Tei Shi is a Colombian-Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer born in Buenos Aires, but now based in LA. She’s jokingly described her work as "mermaid music". Together, they discuss the history of the studio gear they use, positions they record vocals in the studio, watching films to get inspiration, and the difficulties of recording animals.

Crawlspace, the debut album from Tei Shi, is named for the space where the Buenos Aires-born singer would go as a child to confront her fear of the dark, and that bold approach carries through to her skittering, electronic compositions. Joining DJ Chilly in the KEXP Live Room, Tei Shi runs through four tracks from Crawlspace and discusses the origins of her music. This is the episode that we had planned to release the week that the Orlando massacre happened. We hope you've been taking time to grieve and heal and be with your people in the time since. Now we're bringing it back to our regularly scheduled programming with a lighter topic: deseo. Desire is a huge theme in music, and especially Latinx music, and we get into all the things this topic brings up. Listen in to hear some of our favorite songs that address some of the ways desire shows up in our lives. The feeling you get when you are just inexplicably drawn to someone, when you meet someone on the dance floor, when you just can't get someone out of your head. Featuring music by Nicky Jam, Tei Shi, Dr. Bellido, Noita, Aventura and Miguel. Show notes: https://www.radiomenea.com/blog/2016/07/01/episode-7-deseo
