The richest man in the world, Elon Musk is a controversial man with a history of innovation and entrepreneurship. He's one of the most talked about men in America, and after hitching his ride to Donald Trump in the election, now one of the most influential players in US politics. Musk was the largest donor in the 2024 election cycle, spending at least US$277 million to back Trump's run for the White House, as well as putting his social power behind the candidate. Former Managing Editor of Forbes and host of the “What's Bugging Me” podcast on Ricochet, Dennis Kneale has written a book about Elon Musk's journey as a CEO. 'The Leadership Genius of Elon Musk' distils the businessman's success down into 11 lessons, breaking down his philosophies, successes, and controversial standing. Kneale told Mike Hosking he believes Musk got involved in politics reluctantly. “I truly believe he never would have gotten involved if he hadn't felt that America was about to tumble down into the woke mind virus and never come back from it.” Backing a specific political party or candidate can be a risk for a business, as it runs the risk of alienating potential customers. “He knows that he turns off half the audience, and he wants 100% of the audience buying Tesla cars,” Kneale said. However, Musk's passion for free speech and a lack of censorship seems to have outweighed the potential loss of customers. “He has more appreciation for the First Amendment right to freedom of speech and free expression than most Americans do.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

AKA Clark on Quatermass #2: The 1979 Novel   This is the second episode we've released in which award-winning author Simon Clark (@HotelMidnight) pops on to talk to Dan about their mutual hero, writer Nigel Kneale.  In the earlier episode they discussed Kneale's script books of the 1950s Quatermass TV serials; here they discuss Kneale's 1979 follow-up novel, Quatermass.  To preface this discussion, and with the kind blessing of our good friend Spider-Dan, we also present a re-edited 2022 episode from the splendid podcast Spider-Dan and the Secret Bores.  In this episode Dan discussed the 1979 theatrical film The Quatermass Conclusion, on which the novel was (sort of) based, and this chat gives excellent context for the discussion with Simon, so it comes first. Nigel Kneale was a highly acclaimed British screenwriter and novelist, best known for his pioneering work in the science fiction genre, particularly the creation of the iconic character Professor Bernard Quatermass. Born on April 28, 1922, in the Isle of Man, Kneale began his career as a journalist before transitioning to writing for radio, television, and film. He was brought up in Barrow-in-Furness. His breakthrough came in the early 1950s with the BBC television series "The Quatermass Experiment," which introduced audiences to the brilliant and enigmatic scientist Professor Bernard Quatermass. This character, portrayed as a determined and sometimes morally conflicted scientist, became an enduring figure in British popular culture. Kneale continued to develop the Quatermass character in subsequent television series, including "Quatermass II" (1955) and "Quatermass and the Pit" (1958-1959), each exploring themes of science, technology, and the supernatural. These productions were praised for their intelligent storytelling and social commentary, earning Kneale a reputation as a master of speculative fiction. In addition to his work on Quatermass, Kneale penned numerous other scripts for television, including adaptations of classic novels and original dramas. He also wrote several acclaimed novels and contributed to feature films. Throughout his career, Kneale's writing was characterized by its thought-provoking themes, sharp dialogue, and innovative storytelling techniques. He was a key figure in establishing science fiction as a serious genre in British television and film. Nigel Kneale passed away on October 29, 2006, leaving behind a rich legacy of groundbreaking work that continues to influence writers and filmmakers to this day. Learn more about your ad choices. , having worked for The Wall Street Journal, Forbes magazine, CNBC and Fox News, with three decades' experience in storytelling, reporting, editing, leadership and management. Dennis continues to work, advising senior

original content production. Dennis is a regular on-air contributor on Newsmax, seen just about every Sunday morning. And, his most recent and ongoing endeavor is the creation of the “What's Bugging Me” podcast. During the course of the interview, we dive into his background and the many media entities where he worked. We also discuss the move from print to television and cable and now onto podcasting. I've had the pleasure of appearing twice before on his show and hope to make more appearances in the future. As we close the show, I let Dennis rip into one of the subjects that truly bugging him and that is the Government's persecution of Elon Musk. It's amazing to see the weaponized government going after it's opposition. It doesn't have to be political opposition, like Donald Trump. Anyone who is not conforming to the State narratives and defies the State's mandates is an enemy. Elon Musk is just one of their many targets today. I hope you enjoy the show and will take a moment to follow Dennis on his Twitter account and subscribe to or follow his podcast. I know I'm a big fan of his content and his guests, so I have to believe you will be, too. Take a moment to rate and review the show and then share the episode on social media. Tonight, we complete the Hammer Quatermass trilogy (albeit out of order) with The Quatermass Xperiment (a.k.a. The Creeping Unknown in the US) is a 1955 British science fiction horror film from Hammer Film Productions, based on the 1953 BBC Television serial written by Nigel Kneale. Produced by Anthony Hinds, one of the of 37 films he made for Hammer. Hinds wrote a number of films under the  pseudonym 'John Elder' which he adopted after Her couldn't afford a screenwriter for The Curse of the Werewolf). It is directed by Val Guest, writer and director of the Cannon and Ball vehicle, Boys in Blue and Confessions of a Window Cleaner. (and of course director of Quatermass 2) The film stars Oscar Nominee, Brian Donlevy in his fist of 2 portrayals as the eponymous Professor Bernard Quatermass. Richard Wordsworth, Who feature as a sinister taxidermist with James Stewart in Alfred Hitchcock's second version of The Man Who Knew Too Much, as well as appearing in British TV dramas such as Huntingtower and The Tripods, and notablble in other Hammer films - The Revenge of Frankenstein and The Curse of the Werewolf, plays the tormented astronaut Carroon. Jack Warner plays Inspector Lomax (insanely famous in his time as the titular Dixon of Dock Green appearing in 432 episodes on tv from 1955 to 1976) Margia Dean plays Judith Carroon. Dean only passed away, sadly, this June. We also briefly see Thora Hird in one scene as 'Rosie'. Thora lived so long and did achieved so much, she was the subject of 'This is your Life' Twice. The Quatermass Experiment was originally a six-part TV serial broadcast by BBC Television in 1953. It was an enormous success with critics and audiences alike, later described by film historian Robert Simpson as "event television, emptying the streets and pubs". Among its viewers was the forementioned Hammer Films producer, Anthony Hinds, who was immediately keen to buy the rights for a film version. Nigel Kneale also saw the potential for a film adaptation and, at his urging, the BBC touted the scripts around a number of producers. Kneale met with Sidney Gilliat to discuss the scripts but Gilliat was reluctant to buy the rights as he felt any film adaptation would inevitably receive an 'X' Certificate from the British Board of Film Censors. Hammer's offer met some resistance within the BBC, with one executive expressing reservations that The Quatermass Experiment was not suitable material for the company, but the rights were nevertheless sold for an advance of £500. Kneale was a BBC employee at the time, which meant that his scripts were owned entirely by the BBC. He received no extra payment for the sale of the film rights. This became a matter of some resentment on Kneale's part, and when his BBC contract came up for renewal he demanded and secured control over any future film rights for his work. Kneale remained bitter over the affair until the BBC made an ex-gratia payment of £3,000 to him in 1967, in recognition of his creation of Quatermass.  We also include the concept Album 'Victor Caroon', available on Soundcloud here:https://soundcloud.com/victor-caroon Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. Thomas Nigel Kneale was a British screenwriter who wrote professionally for more than 50 years, was a winner of the Somerset Maugham Award, and was twice nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best British Screenplay. This year is the 100 anniversary of his birth.Predominantly a writer of thrillers that used science-fiction and horror elements, he was best known for the creation of the character Professor Bernard Quatermass.. Kneale wrote well-received television dramas such as The Year of the Sex Olympics and, the 3rd highest scoring General Witchfinders classic, The Stone Tape in addition to the Quatermass serials. He has been described as "one of the most influential writers of the 20th century", and as "having invented popular TV".Part One: The RoadThe Road is a 1963 British television play by Kneale. It was broadcast as part of the BBC Television anthology drama series First Night. An Australian remake was aired the following year. However, no recordings of the play, renowned as "one of the great missing masterpieces of British television." are known to exist having been tragically wiped by the BBC.So… we listened to the  BBC Radio 4 audio adaptation, written by Toby Hadoke and directed by Charlotte Riches, aired on 27 October 2018. The production starred Mark Gatiss as Gideon Cobb, Adrian Scarborough as Sir Timothy Hassall and Hattie Morahan as Lady Lavinia Hassall.Part Two:  Beasts: BabyBeasts is a 1976 British television series. Written by Nigel Kneale, it is an anthology of six self-contained episodes that feature the recurring theme of bestial horror. The series was made by ATV for the ITV Network. We watch the most infamous of the series, episode 4 titled ‘Baby' Starring Simon ‘Manimal' MacCorkindale as a newlywed whose wife (played by Midsumer Murders Jane Wymark - Daughter of Patrick Wymark as seen in The Witchfinder General)  sees her pregnancy falls foul of ancient witchcraft.$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$ Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff. Quatermass 2 (a.k.a. Enemy From Space in the United States and Canada) is a 1957 black-and-white British science fiction horror film from Hammer Film Productions, directed by Val Guest, that stars Brian Donlevy, John Longden, Sidney James, Bryan Forbes, Vera Day, and William Franklyn.Quatermass 2 is a sequel to Hammer's earlier film The Quatermass Xperiment, Like its predecessor, it is based on the BBC Television serial Quatermass II written by Nigel Kneale.Brian Donlevy reprises his role as the eponymous Professor Bernard Quatermass, making him the only actor to play the character twice in a film. It is considered as the first film sequel to use the ‘2' / ‘II' suffix within the title. The film's storyline concerns Quatermass's investigation of reports of hundreds of meteorites landing only in the Winnerden Flats area of the UK. His inquiries lead him to a huge industrial complex, strikingly similar to his own plans for a Moon colony. This top-secret facility is in fact the centre of a conspiracy involving the alien infiltration of the highest echelons of the British Government. Quatermass and his allies must now do whatever is necessary to defeat the alien threat before it is too late. The first Quatermass film had been a major success for Hammer and, eager for a sequel, they purchased the rights to Nigel Kneale's follow-up before the BBC had even begun transmission of the new serial. For this adaptation, Nigel Kneale himself was allowed to write the first draft of the screenplay, although subsequent drafts were worked on by director Val Gues who directed the first Hammer Quatrmass. Guest once again employed many cinema vérité techniques to present the fantastic elements of the plot with the greatest degree of realism. Nigel Kneale was critical of the final film, mainly on account of the return of Brian Donlevy in the lead role. Kneale was unhappy with Donlevy's interpretation of the character and also claimed the actor's performance was marred by his alcoholism.Although Quatermass 2 was financially successful, its box office performance was eclipsed by the massive success of another Hammer film, The Curse of Frankenstein, which was to be the first of their many Gothic horror films. (and the subject of our 2nd ever podcast episode) As a result it would be ten years before Hammer adapted the next Quatermass serial for the cinema with Quatermass and the Pit in 1967. Supposedly Quatermass 2 was originally shot in AnsaColor, developed by Agfa, but released in Black and White and it is said the colour negative still exists in the archives - although this could be a weird online hoax.Something Horrific:Whisper Down the Laneby Clay McLeod Chapman https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/55671294-whisper-down-the-laneCornish Horrors: Tales from the Land's Endby Joan Passey (Editor)https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58320855-cornish-horrorsWhere Furnaces Burnby Joel Lanehttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16299282-where-furnaces-burn$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff. Minuke by Nigel Kneale Nigel Kneale Nigel Kneale was born in Barrow in Furness in 1922, which was then part of Lancashire “North of the Sands”, and since 1974 part of the modern county of Cumbria. He died in 2006 in London.  Neale's family came from the Isle of Man, which is clearly visible from the coast of Cumbria. I saw it yesterday but not today as it was too rainy. The family went back to the Isle of Man when he was six (finding Barrow too rich for their blood no doubt) and was educated in Douglas, the island's capital. His father was editor of the local newspaper. Kneale went to study law but got bored with the legal profession. Apparently he tried to join the British army at the start of the Second World War but was declared medically unfit due to photophobia.  He wrote short stories and read out his own story Tomato Cain on the BBC in 1946. Inspired by the reception his story got, he went to London to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.   He then got involved in a voice acting and writing melange of a career on the broadcast media, writing his first script in 1950. His most famous work was the Quatermass Series, a horror science fiction drama series on the BBC which was a massive success. You can find this and his later great success The Stone Tape on Youtube. He did an adaptation of Susan Hill's The Woman in Black in 1989. He adapted some of the Sharpe novels in the 1990s which were also a great success. He was invited to write for the X-Files but declined that job. So, Neale was a big cheese up until recent times. His work, particularly Quatermass and The Stone Tape are canons of British hauntology these days. Minuke Or, if I hadn't done it northern ‘my nook'. But ‘nook' it is to us.  This story is from the collection Tomato Cain and Other Stories published by Collins in 1949. The book is out of print and second-hand copies are going for nearly £400. I didn't buy one. It was requested by a listener and I was only too happy to oblige. The story is told as a frame story. It begins in media res where a man has gone to an estate agent (a realtor) interested in a property. By the end we learn that not only is the property cursed and haunted an on an old Norse burial site, but it is demolished and its site occupied by a scrap metal yard, so why would the guy be interested in it? He clearly doesn't know it's a scrap metal yard because the estate agent has to tell him. This does seem to a plot hole, but we shall forgive Nigel Kneale this. It is also possibly that someone cleverer than me will point out how I have misunderstood this point. It seems like a poltergeist story. We remember the Enfield Poltergeist from the 1970s which received a lot of publicity, but this story pre-dates that case, so couldn't be influenced by it. There was a recent long documentary on BBC Sounds about the Battersea Poltergeist, but that dates from the 1950s, so again can't have influenced Neale. The other hint is the old Norse (or even older) burial ground that underlies Minuke. This idea was picked up and used in several Hollywood horror movies. It features in The Shining where the Overlook Hotel is built on an old Native American burial ground. But this came out in 1980, so again cannot be an influence on Neale. We see this idea of archaeology creating apparitions and other supernatural events in Neale's classic TV programme The Stone Tape which I recently watched. This came out in 1972, but the idea of archaeology holding records of strongly emotional events and replaying it, is hinted at in Neale's story “You Must Listen” about a haunted telephone line. There is a haunted telephone line in this story, as well as a haunted radio that plays monster noises rather than dance music. I recently wrote an article on Medium about Phone Calls From The Dead https://medium.com/inside-the-simulation/phone-calls-from-the-dead-1894a40245e9 (Unexplained... Support this podcast

We have a short lesson in 'Goll as Gaccan' about verbs that begin with a vowel. In the old tongue they were saying 'I am at doing' ('I am a-doing'), but that's absent now, apart from in verbs that begin with a vowel, in which there's a 'g-' to be found at the start of the verb itself. Phil gives us some examples. David Fisher reads out more extracts from The Voyage of Odin's Raven by George Kneale. And, seeing as the first day of March is dedicated to the patron saint of Wales, in 'Claare ny Gael' we hear about a Welshman who wrote two booklets in the Manx language which were published by Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh.

In this event, Marion and Matthew discuss their recent books – Matthew’s novel, Pilgrims, and Marion’s biography, Chaucer: A European Life – both of which focus on medieval journeys across Europe. They will discuss different aspects of medieval travel – ranging from colonialism in Wales to the expulsion of the Jews from England, from diplomacy and cultural exchange to pilgrimage, both real and imagined. One of the issues underpinning their work, and this conversation, is the question of what it means to be English and what it means to be European – both then and now. Biographies: Professor Marion Turner, Tutorial Fellow of Jesus College and Associate Professor of English, University of Oxford Marion Turner works on late medieval literature and culture, focusing especially on Geoffrey Chaucer. Her most recent book, Chaucer: A European Life (Princeton, 2019) argues for the importance of placing Chaucer in multilingual and international contexts, tracing his journeys across Europe and his immersion in global trade routes and exchanges. It was named as a book of the year 2019 by the Times, the Sunday Times, and the TLS, and was shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize 2020. ‘An absolute triumph’ A.N. Wilson, Times Literary Supplement ‘A quite exceptional biography,’ Wolfson History Prize judges Matthew Kneale Matthew Kneale was born in London in 1960, the son of two writers and the grandson of two others. His father, Nigel Kneale, was a screenwriter for film and television, best known for the ‘Quatermass’ series. Matthew’s mother, Judith Kerr, was the author and illustrator of children’s books including ‘The tiger who came to tea’ and ‘Mog the forgetful cat’ while she has also written three autobiographical novels, beginning with ‘When Hitler stole pink rabbit’. From his earliest years Matthew was fascinated by different worlds, both contemporary and from the past. After studying at Latymer Upper School, London, he read Modern History at Magdalen College, Oxford. During his university years he began travelling, seeing diverse cultures at first hand, in Asia, Europe and Latin America. Matthew's books include: Whore Banquets, Inside Rose’s Kingdom, Sweet Thames, English Passengers, Small Crimes in an Age of Abundance, When we were Romans and An Atheist’s History of Belief. Matthew's current novel, Pilgrims, explores medieval life, shaped by religious laws as well as personal battles and follows a fascinating cast of characters on a journey from England to Rome. When not writing Kneale enjoys to travel and has visited some eighty countries and seven continents. He is also fascinated with languages, trying his hand at learning a number, from Italian, Spanish, German and French to Romanian and Amharic Ethiopian. Matthew currently lives in Rome with his wife, Shannon, and their two children, Alexander and Tatiana.

As Mark said when Kneale died, “He is amongst the greats – he is absolutely as important as Dennis Potter, as David Mercer, as Alan Bleasdale, as Alan Bennett, but I think because of a strange snobbery about fantasy or sci-fi, it’s never been quite that way.” In this episode, we chat with Mark about his love for Nigel Kneale’s work, his influence and his legacy. Jen Kneale has an affinity with the sea that stems from a lifetime spent on the ocean. It’s no exaggeration to say that a love of the sea runs in her veins: like her father and grandfather before her she is now a coxswain - or captain - of the lifeboat on the Isle of Man. Jen was the first female coxswain in the island - the original home of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution - and only the 4th nationwide.  Jen is also a successful businesswoman, having set up her own sailing school at the age of 25, a coach and an international sailor, representing Great Britain in the Laser class. She runs an annual This Girl Can sailing weekend aimed at getting women and girls to try sailing, and is passionate about continuing to increase opportunities across the lifeboats and beyond.  In 2017, on her second crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, Jen taught herself celestial navigation, the art and science of navigating via the sun, the moon and the stars, as they did in the days of Captain Cook and Christopher Columbus. She is certainly a woman of many talents… Where to find Jen and the RNLI: Jen's website - http://www.7thwave-iom.com/activities-courses/  Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/7thwaveiom/  RNLI website - https://rnli.org  RNLI Twitter - https://twitter.com/RNLI   RNLI YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/officialrnli  RNLI Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/rnli/  Follow us for more: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/smashingtheceiling/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/smashingceiling Facebook: www.facebook.com/smashingtheceiling  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/naomi-mellor-171550150/

When Dennis Kneale publishes a scoop, smart business people sit up and pay attention. Dennis’s blue-chip media credentials include influential positions at Fox Business, CNBC, Forbes, and The Wall Street Journal. Writing earlier this month for the prestigious Op-Ed page of The Wall Street Journal, Dennis issued a warning that when it comes to product liability, the nationwide Opioid Crisis could very well dwarf the sum total of all cancer claims against Big Tobacco . And it’s not just the giant Fortune 500 companies whose behinds are on the line. Even small businesses that simply provide health insurance might be libel if their employees get addicted to Opioids – or worse, overdose on them. Dennis Kneale joins host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart with a clear message for listeners: If you’re in business and you’re not already closely monitoring the Opioid crisis, you need to be. No babies were harmed by dingos in this episode, but your guides did sit down with Australian born, Nashville resident Jared Kneale. Brandon and Jason first get a cultural lesson from Jared. Touring in Australia is way different than here in the states, and even the opportunities look a little bit different. While in his native homeland, Jared has played with "Austrialian Idols," Hillsong, and the Afro-Cuban rock band Watussi. After getting connected with some players living in Nashville, Jared booked his flight to the states only bringing some clothes and his drums. Armed with confidence and using his cajón as his business card at writers rounds he quickly started working with Rebecca St. James and Audio Adrenalin, Mikky Ekko, Dave Barnes, Matt Wertz, Sugar & the Hi-Lows, Gabe Dixon, Amy Stroup, Trent Dabbs, Jessie Baylin, Isaac Hayden, Rick Price, Jason Eskridge, amongst various other local singer/songwriters. Then they dive in on landing the gig with Grammy Award-winning artist Kacey Musgraves. "How Murica," is Jared? He passes the guides' test, then they look at what life looks like after a great gig. Jared's life today is playing and producing records, and playing gigs that keep his schedule open for session work. This episode is for drummers, touring players, session guys, and immigrants in a music city wondering what it takes to make it as a Nashville player hustling for work as a BLOOMIN' DRUMMER!

For this weeks podcast, there is a distinctly Northern feel with fellow scouser and DJ/Producer Andy Kneale hitting you up with a smooth deep house/tech house and prog house mix for your listening pleasure. Here's a full bio of Andy underneath enjoy. Andy wears his influences on his sleeve. His obsession with electronic music started in the early 90s. Listening to artists such as Altern8, the Prodigy, Acen and Brothers in Rhythm. Skip to the late 90s, while at university studying Physics, he finds himself immersed in the trance and progressive house scene. It wasn’t until the early 00s that Andy became addicted to the dark and pulsing rhythms of Techno when he first listened to The Youngsters Album ‘Lemon Orange’ and the classic Funk D’Void ‘Diabla’. All these influences are obvious in Andy’s music. Full of melody, deep pads and old skool stabs, Andy’s music tries to strike at the heart of the listener. His first EP for Hype muzik ‘Spectrum’ gained support from some of the undergrounds finest talents , including Ian O’Donovan, Madben, Mars T, to name a few. His EP ‘We thought Kraftwerk Was Robots’ gained support and plays from many DJs including UK legend Colin Dale and Nick Warren. Recently his material has gained support on the ‘It is what it is’ radio show of Laurent Garnier. As Andy’s sound develops, interest for his music grows. Nigel Kneale (1922-2006) was absolute murder, in the Reggae sense. No writer of English science fiction thought more originally than Nigel Kneale, who mostly wrote teleplays for the BBC. His "Quatermass (pro. 'Kway-ter-mass') and the Pit" from 1959 attempted to explain the whole history of religion via Martians. It strangely works. Kneale's "Quatermass" (1979) showed how the "young" are unable to save themselves from generational self-slaughter. Only "seniors" can save 'em! There's a lot to Kneale, He's one other of those unusual humanists who understood about Original Sin. These rare birds -- they're all "murder" -- have much to tell us.
