The Rich Outdoors
Mules, Mountains & a Collapsed Lung: Justin Helvik on Going All In

The Rich Outdoors

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2026 59:02

There’s a certain type of person who can’t half-ass anything. The kind of guy who decides to climb the Grand Teton on a whim, rappels off a sheer face having never rappelled before, canyoneers into some of the most remote slot canyons in the American Southwest, and packs mules solo through the dark at midnight to make the opener. Justin Helvik is that guy — and somehow, impossibly, he’s also a 20-year educator who coached high school football and showed up Monday morning with a collapsed lung and six broken ribs, insisting everything was fine. Justin and I go way back. He was with me on one of my early bear hunts. I helped him build the pole barn that would eventually house the mules he didn’t own yet. Life moves fast when you’re the kind of person who’s always got the next adventure already on the calendar. In this episode, Justin breaks down his unconventional path from desk jockey to legitimate mountain mule skinner — and I mean that in the best possible way. We talk about what drove a guy with zero ranch background to go all in on mule packing, the gnarly wreck on a Montana mountain goat hunt that left him with a punctured lung and broken ribs (and how his mule, Bella, somehow knew he was hurt and carried him out of the backcountry gently), and what it actually feels like to go from being intimidated by stock animals to packing 80 miles through the Yellowstone Thoroughfare. But this conversation goes deeper than mules. We get into the philosophy of adventure — what it means to chase that feeling of uncomfortable, why comfort might actually be the most dangerous thing you can do to yourself, and how stacking experiences over a lifetime is the only real way to build confidence that transfers everywhere. Justin talks about identity, ego, legacy, and what Lonesome Dove’s Augustus McCrae got right about living versus dying. He’s also got a Substack — From Desk Jockey to Mule Skinner — that I’d encourage every one of you to go read. He’s a great writer, and the stories are even better on the page. If you’ve ever thought about getting into pack stock, or you’re someone who’s wired to always be pushing the next limit, this one’s for you. Episode Sponsors Bridger Watch This episode is brought to you by Bridger Watch — the smartwatch built specifically for hunters, by a hunter. Cody set out to build something better after getting tired of pulling his phone out 100 times a day just to check his OnX map in the field. The solution? Put the maps on the watch. Bridger Watch is the best smartwatch for hunters, period. If you’re a watch guy and a hunter, this is built for you. Website: https://www.bridgerwatch.com?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss Coupon Code: TRO onX Hunt onX Hunt is the gold standard for hunting maps, and they just dropped a feature that’s going to change how you hunt with a buddy. The new Share Location feature inside the Go Track section lets you and your hunting partner see each other’s real-time position right on the map — like a modern-day Garmin Rino, but actually good. Fair warning: this only works in cell service, so it won’t help you in the deep dark. But for those in-service hunts? This is seriously cool tech that a lot of hunters have been asking for for years. Comfort is the real killer — not the mountains. Justin makes the point that denying yourself the adventures you’re wired for is a slow death from the inside. It’s not just a mindset cliché — he’s seen it play out in his own life. When he’s not planning something that makes him a little nervous, he loses motivation everywhere else: at work, at home, as a father. The takeaway for listeners isn’t to go do something reckless. It’s to identify your version of “uncomfortable” and book it. Put it in the calendar. Then don’t cancel. 2. Stack experiences, not just kills. One of the most practical threads in this whole conversation is the concept of experience stacking — the idea that every micro-adventure you complete is compounding interest on your confidence. Justin didn’t go from zero to packing 80 miles through the Yellowstone Thoroughfare overnight. He stacked years of backcountry hunting, mule rides with friends, short overnighters, and hard lessons (including that ER visit) until the big trips felt like a natural next step. If you’re waiting until you’re “ready” to do the hunt of a lifetime, you’ll wait forever. Start smaller, go often, and let the experiences compound. 3. The anticipation is half the experience — book the trip. Justin and Cody dig into something that doesn’t get talked about enough in the hunting world: the happiness that comes from having something on the calendar to look forward to. Science backs this up — humans are wired to find joy in anticipation. The planning, the e-scouting, the gear lists, the late-night what-ifs with your buddy — that’s not just prep, that’s part of the experience itself. Don’t wait for the perfect conditions or the perfect budget. Book it now, figure it out along the way, and let yourself enjoy the countdown.

What if the very thing God promised you is too heavy to carry alone? In “No Help, No Harvest,” we dive into Luke 5:7 and uncover a powerful truth: some blessings will break your nets if you refuse partnership. After a night of failure, Simon Peter obeys Jesus and experiences a miracle so overwhelming that he has to shout for help before he loses the harvest. This message confronts isolation, ego, and the pressure to carry everything by yourself. Because sometimes the reason you're overwhelmed isn't because God abandoned you — it's because the harvest was never meant for one boat. Before the nets filled, Jesus was already in the boat. And while His presence produces the miracle, partnership is what helps sustain it.No help. No harvest.

The Winnipeg Jets head to Missouri on Thursday night for a matchup with the St. Louis Blues. But once again, the out-of-town scoreboard isn't doing them any favours. The Nashville Predators rolled to a 5-0 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, leapfrogging the Los Angeles Kings and moving into the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. That leaves Winnipeg four points back of Nashville. With just five games remaining, the margin for error is gone. What once felt like a long shot is becoming even more difficult by the day, as realistic playoff hopes continue to fade. Cam and Jim break it all down, while also weighing in on Jonathan Toews being nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, the social media reaction to keeping Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor together, and Connor Hellebuyck missing practice. SEND ME A TEXT MESSAGE NOWFor years Donald Trump mocked America's allies, called NATO useless, and treated Europe like a burden. Now with tensions rising around Iran and the Strait of Hormuz suddenly becoming critical, that same world he pushed away isn't exactly eager to help. Turns out alliances don't just snap back into place when you need them.Something is clearly shifting, and it's not subtle. Key global players are making decisions that say more with their silence than any speech ever could. When the stakes involve oil, shipping, and global stability, hesitation isn't random. It's calculated, and it tells you everything about how the last few years are being remembered.Back in Washington, the tone is getting even more intense. What used to be political disagreement is crossing into something far more serious, especially when the conversation turns toward the media. The language being used now isn't normal, and it raises a question that should make everyone uncomfortable.Because when words like treason start getting thrown at journalists, it stops being about headlines and starts becoming something else entirely. It becomes pressure. It becomes control. And it becomes a warning shot to anyone reporting something the administration doesn't like. And once that line starts to blur, the consequences don't stay contained. At the same time, Democrats are pushing for a Justice Department investigation into possible perjury tied to sworn testimony in Washington. On paper that should be straightforward. If someone lies under oath, there are consequences. But this is Washington, and suddenly what should be simple starts getting very complicated depending on who's involved. This episode pulls all of it together. The global tension, the shifting alliances, the pressure on the press, and the question of who's actually held responsible when it matters. Because what's happening right now isn't just politics. It's something bigger, and it's moving fast.Say hello, and send me your comments.WolfPackTalks@gmail.comAWorldGoneMadPodcast@gmail.com

On May 20, 2016, ICU nurse Amber Kornhorst set out on a solo late-afternoon hike near Cane Beds, Arizona, and climbed a deceptively "sticky" sandstone wall she couldn't safely descend. With no cell service and no way out, she fell about 100 feet into a narrow rock "dungeon," suffering three spinal fractures, a crushed pelvis, head and facial injuries, severe dehydration, and hypothermia — and typed goodbye messages to her family on her phone. Refusing to give up, she crawled and climbed to a more visible ledge and blew her whistle three blasts every half hour until search-and-rescue teams and a helicopter located her nearly 24 hours later, executing a technical rope raise and hover-load evacuation to a Utah hospital. Her story drives home survival essentials: always tell someone your plan, never hike alone, start early, carry extra water and a whistle, consider a satellite communicator, and never climb anything you can't safely descend. 00:46 Show Intro And Setup 01:40 Amber Hits The Trail 03:02 Climbing The Sandstone Wave 04:10 No Way Down Desert Trap 05:32 The Hundred Foot Fall 06:20 Shock And Goodbye Texts 08:27 Painful Climb And Whistle 11:03 Search Effort Mobilizes 12:41 Helicopter Spots Her 14:16 Technical Rope Rescue 16:10 Hover Pickup Extraction 17:02 Helicopter Evacuation 17:43 Hospital Recovery Journey 19:06 Why She Survived 19:43 Whistle and Visibility 21:55 Search Mobilized Fast 22:50 Wilderness Safety Takeaways 25:03 Desert Hiking Mistakes 27:08 Survival Mindset Lessons 29:47 Final Wrap and Credits Listen AD FREE: Support our podcast at patreaon: http://patreon.com/TheCruxTrueSurvivalPodcast Email us! thecruxsurvival@gmail.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thecruxpodcast/ Get schooled by Julie in outdoor wilderness medicine! https://www.headwatersfieldmedicine.com/ Primary/First-Person Account Kohnhorst, Amber. Imagine a proposal that improves women's health, making it easier to get critical health care during and after pregnancy, supported by nearly three-fourths of the Legislature — Republicans and Democrats alike — and one man is blocking it, using dirty tricks when necessary. -There are former Steelers asking why the team didn't make any moves at the trade deadline to better the team. One believes if the defense needed help, Mike Tomlin would have made sure an acquisition took place. If the Steelers added somebody like Jakobi Meyers, where would that put them in the AFC? Do we still think it was a mistake that they didn't do anything ahead of the deadline, outside of the Kyle Dugger move from over a week ago? The guys questioned whether or not the Steelers thinking about the draft was a smart move. How much say did Mike have in comparison to the owner and GM? – Pitt QB Mason Heintschel joined the show. Mason said his favorite football jersey is his Patrick Mahomes one from around 2018. He was a 3-sport athlete in high school, so the guys asked him about his HS exploits. Mason told the guys why he is a Tennessee Titans fan. He joked that the Titans upset playoff win over the Ravens a few years back was ‘one of the best days of his life.' Mason said baseball was a little bit too slow of a sport for him to get into. What was Mason's motivation getting into college football? Mason said scoring on the first drive in his first start really raised his confidence level. Mason watches a lot of Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert film. He added Drew Brees to that list. He talked about the role his parents have played in where he's at. Mason talked about the confidence instilled in him, but the fine line you have to walk. He said he's not much of a trash talker on the field, but Pitt has no shortage of that. The guys asked Mason about his chat with Jon Gruden that was published earlier in the week – saying Gruden may be at the Pitt-Notre Dame game next weekend. Mason said he is using the bye week to get a little bit ahead of Notre Dame even with the Panthers winning 5 straight games. Mason talked about the trip to Florida State, playing in front of a hostile crowd, and coming out of it with a win. Mason credited some high school classes for why he has no issue public speaking or doing a full-length interview. Did Mason have any relationship with Bruce Gradkowski, who was a Toledo football legend? – Former Pitt QB Pat Bostick joined the show. Pat talked to the guys about Mason Heintschel and how special of a young man he is. The guys talked about what has transpired at QB with Pitt in the last 12 months. Pat described Mason as a ‘football junkie' and said he was watching film when he was the third QB on the depth chart. What kind of pitch does Pitt have to put forth to make sure Mason is back next season in the NIL/transfer portal era of college football? What led to such love for Notre Dame and the Catholic contingent that roots on the Fighting Irish? The guys said Marcus Freeman is easier to like than just about any coach in ND history. Can Pitt stand up to the Irish next Saturday? What kind of resume is Pitt giving to the College Football Playoff committee?

Our culture is obsessed with self-help, believing that if you try harder, manifest more, or believe in yourself enough, you'll find confidence, growth, and success. But Scripture shows us a different way. In this episode, Sam unpacks why self-help is no help at all, and why self-sacrifice, through humility and obedience, is the way of Christ. The Christian life is about emptying ourselves so that we can be filled with the Holy Spirit, who equips us to walk in God's strength instead of our own. You'll learn what it looks like to surrender your marriage, family, career, and success to God's hands, and be challenged to reflect on the parts of your heart that need to be laid down at the cross. Key Scriptures: •Luke 9:23 — “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” •Philippians 2:3–7 — “Christ Jesus… made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant.”

This week on the podcast, Tara shares a story that so many of you will relate to.   A woman in her early 50s came to me after spending hundreds of dollars on functional testing - the DUTCH hormone test and the GI MAP stool test - and you know what? They offered her no real answers.   She was still exhausted. Still bloated. Still not sleeping. And still stuck with zero direction on what to do next. So what went wrong?       In this Episode: 00:54 - Why a 51-year-old client came to Tara after getting no answers from standard functional testing (DUTCH + GI MAP). 02:11 - Why DUTCH testing can fall flat when hormone production has already declined - and why it's not useful for many women in menopause. 04:06 - The limits of the GI MAP when gut dysfunction is mild or metabolic - and why gut symptoms don't always mean gut damage. 05:22 - How this client's low energy, low mood, and low motivation pointed to hormone and thyroid depletion - not just gut dysfunction. 11:32 - Tara's approach: rebuilding from the bottom of the pyramid up - focusing first on nutrition, minerals, hormone/thyroid support. 14:10 - Final thoughts on test interpretation, why you don't always need more data, and how to assess your next steps strategically.     Other Episodes You May Enjoy: EPS 45: My thoughts on the DUTCH test EPS 91: Debunking common arguments for needing to run the DUTCH test  EPS 102: Why we don't test hormones in perimenopause  EPS 112: Why we stopped using the GI MAP in my practice & how we are approaching gut testing these days  EPS 131: Should we be concerned about estrogen metabolites?    Mentioned in this episode: Purchase Herbatonin here - Save 10% when you use Tara's code: Tara10 MegaSporeBiotic – Click HERE to grab this probiotic and use my practitioner code, which also gets you 10% off: TaraMegaSpore Paleovalley – Grab your goodies as mentioned in this episode, HERE Blue Light Blocking Glasses Recommendations: Baxter Blue (Australian site) Save 15% when you use Tara's code: Tara15 Bon Charge Save 15% when you use Tara's code: TARA15 HRT Made Simple™ - Learn how to confidently speak to your doctor about the benefits of hormone replacement therapy so you can set yourself up for symptom-free, unmedicated years to come without feeling confused, dismissed, or leaving the medical office minus your HRT script. What if being overlooked was the best thing that ever happened to your business? When Wandra Cain walked into showrooms and got ignored, she didn't flinch—she made a mental note. That “Pretty Woman” moment stuck with her, not as a grievance, but as fuel. She'd always had a sharp eye and a natural gift for pulling beauty out of limitation, but that experience sharpened her resolve to create a design business that didn't ask for permission to be taken seriously. She built WCA Interiors from the ground up, not with flashy backing or a big team, but with intention, consistency, and a deep belief that her work belonged, regardless of who initially acknowledged it. Her journey started with pivots. From corporate desk jobs to cosmetology school, and eventually to earning her interior design degree while working full-time, she followed the tug toward creativity even when the path forward looked unclear. Early projects tested her—contractors challenged her decisions, budgets fell apart, and she didn't always know how to protect her time or profit. But instead of hiding the hard parts, she leaned in. Every mistake became a tool. Every misstep taught her how to run a better project, have firmer boundaries, and value her own expertise. What really sets Wandra apart is her ability to show up with humility and confidence at the same time. She leads projects with warmth, listens deeply to clients, and isn't afraid to say no when the fit or the numbers are off. Even with over 11,000 Instagram followers, she's more focused on building genuine relationships—online and off—than chasing engagement. For her, design isn't about ego or aesthetic signatures; it's about helping people feel truly at home in their spaces. The business didn't happen overnight. It was ten years of quiet hustle, small wins, big learning curves, and showing up again the next day. You'll learn: ✅ How to lead projects (and set boundaries) when contractors push back ✅ Why visibility matters—and how Wandra handled being underestimated ✅ Systems and client processes that helped her turn a hobby into a real business ✅ What she's doing now to market her firm without burning out on Instagram If you're an interior designer looking to grow a business that reflects who you are—and makes money doing it—this is the episode that's going to help you get there. Listen now and remember: being underestimated might be your greatest edge.   (0:00) The “Pretty Woman” moment that shaped Wandra's mindset (0:50) Wandra's origin story and entering the interior design world (4:40) Why representation in the design industry matters (12:30) Pivoting from cosmetology to design and going back to school (15:50) Learning the hard way: pricing, client management, and early business mistakes (22:40) Building confidence and refining systems and client processes (30:50) Grassroots marketing, networking, and digital growth   About Wandra Cain Wandra Cain is the founder and principal designer of WCA Interiors, a full-service interior design firm based in Easton, Pennsylvania. With a focus on creating refined yet livable luxury, Wandra believes that a well-designed home should serve as a sanctuary, capturing the spirit of the client and enhancing their lifestyle. Her approach emphasizes collaboration, ensuring each space reflects its inhabitants' unique personalities and needs. Website Instagram: @wcainteriors
