Join us for Hammer's Hands of the Ripper, a 1971 British horror film released as the second half of a double feature with Twins of Evil. Directed by Peter Sasdy, produced by Aida Young, and written by L.W. Davidson from a story by Edward Spencer Shew. Making good use of the large Baker Street set at Pinewood Studios—left over from The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes—the production was denied permission to film its final scenes at St. Paul's Cathedral, so a replica was constructed instead. If the Pritchards' home and staircase look familiar, it's because Hammer's ever-resourceful set designers reused elements from The Curse of Frankenstein years earlier (see episode 2 of our podcast for more on that classic). Director Peter Sasdy, who cited Hands of the Ripper as his favourite film, also directed the original Adrian Mole TV series (both The Secret Diary and The Growing Pains), three episodes of Hammer House of Horror, and two other Hammer features: Countess Dracula and Taste the Blood of Dracula (the latter coming to the podcast later this year, hopefully). Most monumentally, he directed the legendary BBC sci-fi thriller The Stone Tape (definitely check General Witchfinders number 5—our third most popular episode to date!). Eric Porter stars as Doctor Pritchard. Renowned for his work in film, television, and theatre, he famously played Professor Moriarty opposite Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes and Soames Forsyte in The Forsyte Saga. Angharad Rees plays Anna, the daughter of the Ripper. She appeared in Boon (take a drink), starred as Demelza in 28 episodes of Poldark, and, the year after Hands of the Ripper, featured in Under Milk Wood alongside Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, and Elizabeth Taylor. She was made a Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, had a pub named after her in Pontypridd (sadly now a card shop), and founded a Knightsbridge jewellery company, Angharad. Pieces she designed were featured in Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Wikipedia also notes she was once in a relationship with Alan Bates, which we mention only to plug episode 35, where we talked about The Shout.Lynda "Nurse Gladys Emmanuel" Baron appears as Long Liz—a curious name choice considering Long Liz was an actual canonical Ripper victim. Here, she's depicted alive and well (at least initially), years after Saucy Jack's supposed demise. Baron appeared as a recurring character in both Coronation Street and EastEnders, and played three different characters in Doctor Who across three Doctors.Dora Bryan turns up as Mrs Golding, one of two clairvoyants in the film. You may know her from 50 episodes of Last of the Summer Wine, Boon (drink), or as Helen in A Taste of Honey (written by Jon's mum's mate Shelagh Delaney). She (Dora, not Shelagh) also appeared in both a Carry On and a St Trinian's.Lastly, Norman Bird pops up as the Police Inspector. If he looks familiar, it's because he had over 200 TV and 60 film roles. He was in Spywatch (as Mr Jenkins), Boon (drink), Woof!, Whack-O!, and Help! (with Stephen Mangan). He also did a stint in Jim Davidson's Up the Elephant and Round the Castle—only mentioned because Ross was convinced it was alongside Marina Sirtis, but IMDb says she was in just one episode?Anyway, back to Norman Bird. He appeared in The Adventure Game, Whistle Down the Wind, Steptoe and Son, Fawlty Towers, Please Sir!, and The Medusa Touch (on our long list since day one). He was Mr Braithwaite, the farmer, in Worzel Gummidge and voiced Bilbo in the 1978 Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings. STEVE HATCHER returns to tell us all about NIGEL KNEALE's work in the 1960s. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on November 17th 2024. Following our recent conversation about NIGEL KNEALE'S BEASTS anthology from the 1970s, STEVE HATCHER and I thought we might continue discussing the career of NIGEL KNEALE, as STEVE has been systematically working his way through such television programmes as still exist from this great writer's works, although he has been particularly focussing on the ones that mostly involve themes of science fiction, fantasy, magic, and folk horror – basically the kind of subjects that are most of interest to him, which seems a perfectly reasonable way of choosing what you want to watch to this old viewer. Anyway, this week we're going to focus mostly on NIGEL'S work from the 1960s, the period following the fifties successes of the first three QUATERMASS serials, the significant contribution to TV history that was his adaptation of George Orwell's NINETEEN-EIGHTY-FOUR, and fascinating lost gems like THE CREATURE, but before the seventies which would bring the classic that is THE STONE TAPE, BEASTS, of course, and, later the fourth of the QUATERMASS stories, which starred SIR JOHN MILLS in the title role. The nineteen-sixties would bring a whole lot of fascinating works including lost classics like the nuclear nightmares of THE ROAD, the Cold War terrors of THE CRUNCH, a different version of NINETEEN-EIGHTY-FOUR, and the prescient broadcasting allegories of THE YEAR OF THE SEX OLYMPICS. We also take some time to discuss NIGEL'S film writing which involves several famous films that it might come as some surprise to you that he was involved in, as well as perhaps some less unexpected dabbles with science-fiction and fantasy with THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON and THE WITCHES, as well as the inevitable QUATERMASS AND THE PIT remake. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Welcome back to our “Beasts” Double Bill! Last time, we watched "The Dummy" from the infamous anthology series by General Witchfinders hero Nigel Kneale. We now leave the smashed-up movie set of "The Dummy" with its snarling Y-fronts-wearing jilted actor and join Angie and Roger Truscott in their secluded Hampshire home for "During Barty's Party." This episode features the only actual 'beasts' as the main threat: in this case, large, super-evolved, intelligent rats. Elizabeth Sellars plays Angie Truscott, known for "The Mummy's Shroud," and Anthony Bate plays Roger Truscott, heavily channeling Michael Bryant's Peter Brock character from "The Stone Tape." Bate was cast as Doctor Fendehman in "Image of the Fendahl" but dropped out, with Denis Lill taking the role. Colin Bell plays Barty Wills, the local DJ hosting the titular "Barty's Party," his regular rock and roll radio show. Like the rest of the cast, Bell is only heard, not seen. He is seen, however, in "The Sea Devils" and "Invasion of the Dinosaurs," both Jon Pertwee stories. Norman Mitchell plays the Police Sergeant. Supposedly, at 18, Mitchell walked from Sheffield to London to become an actor, leading to nearly 200 film appearances, 500 radio broadcasts, and an estimated 2,000 television appearances. He developed a niche of playing policemen, appearing as such in 12 episodes of "Worzel Gummidge," "Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell" (more on this very soon), "And Now the Screaming Starts!", "Oliver!" and the first Doctor Who Christmas episode, "The Feast of Steven." John Rhys-Davies plays Peter Newell. Famous for his parts in Lord of the Rings and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Rhys-Daviesis a supporter of the British Conservative Party, Rhys-Davies was a radical leftist in the '60s, who tried to heckle a young Tory MP. But the parliamentarian "shot down the first two hecklers in such brilliant fashion that I decided I ought for once to shut up and listen". The MP was Margaret Thatcher. He is a supporter of Brexit. On 25 April 2019, he appeared as a panellist on the BBC's Question Time. His conduct on the programme towards politician Caroline Lucas was later described as "thuggish and sexist" by some viewers. PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI, is back to discuss TV ghosts... First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on January 21st 2024 This week we welcome back PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI himself, that prolific podcaster from his very own THE SHY LIFE podcast, and we're going to talk about GHOSTS, but probably not the GHOSTS that you might think we are. Because, whilst we ought to note the passing of that much-loved sitcom of recent years on VISION ON SOUND - and who knows, perhaps on another week we will – our topic today is more about the ghosts that have appeared on other television shows that we have enjoyed over the years. So whilst PAUL and I will be having a general chat about the subject, we will be touching upon RANDALL AND HOPKIRK (DECEASED) in both of its incarnations, PAUL's perennial favourite DARK SHADOWS, the RICHARD CARPENTER classic THE GHOSTS OF MOTLEY HALL, taking a brief sideways trip into the TWILIGHT ZONE, considering the supernatural elements of SAPPHIRE AND STEEL, pulling off the mask of another janitor with the SCOOBY-DOO gang, chattering about some of those GHOST STORIES FOR CHRISTMAS, and even making brief references to Nigel Kneale's classic THE STONE TAPE. Not that we're going into any great depth about any of these shows, as every one of them could be worthy of an hour all to itself – and will be if any listeners fancy joining me to talk about any or all of them. Instead PAUL and I are just meandering through some of those dark places beyond the mortal realm, and lifting the veil briefly to take the merest glimpse into those worlds beyond, and our human interpretations of what they might be. The Treasure of Abbot Thomas is a supernatural drama produced by the BBC as part of the A Ghost Story for Christmas series. Once again, directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark, the screenplay was written by John Bowen (Writer of the Series'The Guardians' In a declining England of the 1980s, the UK has broken up and England is ruled by a fascist military force), with an atmospheric musical score by Geoffrey Burgon (Who also created the music for the BBC Narnia series and Monty Python's the Life of Brian). It is based on the 1904 short story "The Treasure of Abbot Thomas" by M.R. James, the drama was originally broadcast on December 23, 1974. The drama starred Podcast Hero, Michael Bryant as Rev. Justin Somerton. As listeners will remember, Bryant was one of the stars of the classic BBC television play The Stone Tape (made only two years previous to his appearance in this film), in which he played the leader of a team of scientists who investigate ghost sightings in a brooding Gothic mansion. The film also features: Paul Lavers as Peter, Lord Dattering, who appeared in the Fourth Doctor adventure "The Androids of Tara." Frank Mills as Mr. Tyson, known for being considered for the role of one of the security guards in the film "Lifeforce."John Herrington as Abbot Thomas, who had small roles in the television versions of "Quatermass 2" and "Quatermass and the Pit," as well as two Doctor Who television stories: as Rhynmal in "The Daleks' Master Plan" and Jim Holden in "Colony in Space." Sheila Dunn as Mrs. Tyson and Virginia Balfour as Lady Dattering also appear in the film. Although James's original story was set in Germany, for budgetary reasons, the television version was relocated to England. Clark used the grounds of Wells Cathedral in Somerset for the entrance to the well where Abbot Thomas hid his treasure. Wells Cathedral Chapter House and its adjoining steps were also used in various scenes. Regarding "The Treasure of Abbot Thomas," Clark recalls John Bowen's script "took some liberties with the story—which made it for the better, I think...It's really quite a funny story until it gets nasty, although the threat is always there. James has a mordant sense of humour, and it's good to translate that into cinematic terms when you can. I'd always wanted to do a medium scene, and John came up with a beauty." In the 1980s, an idyllic pub was named the "most haunted" pub in Wales, and possibly the world. But what was happening at this serene beauty spot? Strange sounds were captured, audible phenomena that experts debated but could not explain, and some believed it might be an early example of the so-called "Stone Tape" theory in action. Whatever it was, the media attention died down, but the activity did not - is anything, it escalated into reports and sightings of phantom ladies, pesky poltergeists, and spectral children. Join Mark Rees (Ghosts of Wales) for a spooky Halloween investigation in search of the autumn spirits at the Prince of Wales pub in Kenfig on the Ghosts and Folklore of Wales podcast Nos Calan Gaeaf special... if you dare!     What is the Ghosts and Folklore of Wales with Mark Rees podcast? The "Ghosts and Folklore of Wales" podcast explores Welsh ghosts and ghost stories, lore, myths and legends. Launched by author and journalist Mark Rees in early 2020, this weird and wonderful podcast takes a fascinating look at the country's countless curious subjects by combining decades of research and insights from many books and articles with long-lost tales from dusty old tomes. Ranging from "real life" encounters with the uncanny to fantastical adventures from the Mabinogion, new episodes are uploaded every other (Folklore) Thursday and feature everything from pesky poltergeists to fire-breathing dragons and the odd wicked, and not-so-wicked, witch. Along with the regular stories you can also expect the odd special guest, an occasional "live" ghost hunt, and all sorts of crazy ideas. Seasonal specials include the dark and Gothic Halloween (Nos Calan Gaeaf) traditions of old, to everyone's favourite skulled-skulled Christmas visitor, the Mari Lwyd herself. Dare you explore haunted Wales? From the sublime mountains and cascading waterfalls to the bustling cities and a remote farm, think of it as opening the Welsh The X-Files... and some tenuous Ghostbusters links! Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, Dougray Scott, Jessica Raine and two scary skeleton creatures are all so unspeakably horny that all Nathan, Corey, Si and Pete can do is Hide. Notes and links Jessica Raine, who plays Emma in Hide will go on to play Doctor Who's first producer Verity Lambert in An Adventure in Space and Time, a drama about the origins of Doctor Who which is released a few months after this episode. But more about that later, perhaps. (Spoilers!) Sound Effects No. 13: Death & Horror was an album produced by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1977 and used continuously in TV and stage productions ever since. Mary Whitehouse complained vociferously about its release, because of course she did. Christopher Nolan's Interstellar (2014) also features time-travelling astronauts with a ghostly influence on the past. It's hard to imagine that it makes that much more sense than Hide though, isn't it? I considered writing about the racist lyrics of Cole Porter's Let's Do It, but after a second's reflection, I've decided to just let you Google them for yourself. But really, don't. The Stone Tape (1972) was a made-for-TV movie written by Quatermass's Nigel Kneale and featuring Jane Asher and Doctor Who's very own Ian Cuthbertson. Like Hide, it features researchers spending the night in a house haunted by a spectral woman, but Neil Cross would like to make it very clear that for copyright purposes, it is in every way a legally distinct entity from Hide. El Sandifer is particularly scathing in her assessment of Nigel Kneale in her essay on (among other things) ITV's 1978 TV movie version of Quatermass. And finally, Whatever Happened to Susan Foreman? was an episode of a comedy radio programme called Whatever Happened To…?, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 1994 — featuring Jane Asher (again) as Susan Foreman. It was released as a special feature on the DVD of The Dalek Invasion of Earth. Actually, there is one more thing. The story from The Sarah Jane Adventures that we talk about in the tag is called Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?. It's amazing. Go and watch it immediately. This year is the 100 anniversary of his birth.Predominantly a writer of thrillers that used science-fiction and horror elements, he was best known for the creation of the character Professor Bernard Quatermass.. Kneale wrote well-received television dramas such as The Year of the Sex Olympics and, the 3rd highest scoring General Witchfinders classic, The Stone Tape in addition to the Quatermass serials. He has been described as "one of the most influential writers of the 20th century", and as "having invented popular TV".Part One: The RoadThe Road is a 1963 British television play by Kneale. It was broadcast as part of the BBC Television anthology drama series First Night. An Australian remake was aired the following year. First of all, I just wanted to say I enjoy the podcast and have been tuning in every week for some time now. You guys do a wonderful job highlighting the paranormal throughout the region.  In honor of the upcoming spooky season I think it would be great if you guys could do a podcast on haunted locations in western North Carolina. My friends and I are looking to get a road trip together to explore some of the more famous and off the beaten path haunted locations in the area. I'm a skeptic who wants to believe, and I'm hoping that this year will be my year to experience something paranormal. I'll start off the list by sharing a couple of the reportedly haunted locations in my neck of the woods.  Golden Valley Ghosts  I've been to the Fellowship Baptist Church many times during the day and the night. While I've never had any experiences there, it is creepy because the church is semi-abandoned (they only have church there twice a year), and it's very isolated up on a mountain with a couple mile gravel road leading up to it. You even have to drive over a small (and reportedly haunted - see link) creek to get to it. The church is ramshackle and is open to visitors to come in and sign the guest book. The graveyard is extremely old, which adds to the creepy ambience. See link for details about the hauntings. As I mentioned before, I've yet to experience anything there yet, so I can't relay any stories of my own at this time.  https://www.angelfire.com/in/lottgreene/hallodan.html  This is my town's most famous ghost story by far. I'm a middle grades teacher in the area, and we always read this story around Halloween time. Supposedly, the place where Daniel Keith was executed (the old city gallows) was cursed, causing every business that operated there to fail, until Dominoes took over in the 2000's. The address is 114 S Washington St, Rutherfordton, NC 28139; however, the shadow hasn't been reported there since 1949 for reasons explained in the story. Again, I've never experienced anything here myself, but I make sure to drive by there every year sometime during the Halloween season. Unfortunately, It's not very creepy because it's in the downtown area of Rutherfordton. Daniel Keith is reportedly buried in an unmarked grave at the nearby Gilboa Church graveyard. This area is much more atmospheric, and I always have a good time trying to figure out where he is buried.  So here are my stories, feel free to use them if you want to. I think it would be awesome if you (and maybe some of your listeners) could share your local haunts in Western NC so that we can all go out and enjoy them this Fall. I hope that you consider this as a possible episode for your podcast.  Thanks,  Shawn P. I'm interested in exploring places in the western Carolinas thought to be locales of strange happenings. I'm also wondering if you have looked into the Meadow,  aka the southern Skinwalker Ranch, currently being researched by Trey Hudson et al? Thanks for any reply. Neither interacting with the environment around him nor being affected by it. Almost as if the world around him was merely being replayed. Seen, but not truly there. Such a mysterious figure has all the hallmarks of a residual haunting. The oft-cited Stone Tape Theory is the proposed mechanism behind residual hauntings. The idea is that emotion unleashes energy that is then saved to the most common mineral on earth, quartz crystal. That emotional energy behaves as if it were being recorded on video tape; a recording which can then be replayed under the right conditions. This suggests that apparitions are not classic ghosts in the way that we usually think of them, but a replay that has been imprinted on the objects or atmosphere surrounding the original events.  While it was not always known as “the Stone Tape theory,” the basic framework for this kind of imprinting was in place for nearly 200 years. In tracing this framework, we begin with Charles Babbage, a mathematician known primarily as “the father of computing” and the inventor of the first programmable computer.  In 1817, Babbage suggested that each spoken word leaves an everlasting imprint on the air itself. It can only be heard for a short period of time, but the word itself remains there, hanging silently in the air, forever. This suggests nothing about replay, as in the Stone Tape Theory, but brings the idea of events being “stored” into the conversation. In 1842, physician and physiology professor Joseph Rodes Buchanan introduced the world to the concept of psychometry, or the reading of the past from physical objects. Buchanan felt that all objects radiate an energy, which can transfer the object's history to a properly sensitive person if they touch the object. He would go on to write in the Manual Of Psychometry in 1893: The discoveries of Psychometry will enable us to explore the history of man, as those of geology enable us to explore the history of the earth. There are mental fossils for psychologists as well as mineral fossils for the geologists; and I believe that hereafter the psychologist and the geologist will go hand in hand The linking of geology to psychic phenomena, the persistence of history through physical objects, all seem a clear predecessor of the Stone Tape theory. An investigative group called The Society for Psychical Research (also known as SPR) was founded on the 20th of February in 1882 , and it continues to this day. Within a few years of its creation, founder and investigator Edmund Gurney, alongside fellow investigator and eventual president of the society Eleanor Sidgwick, suggested that there were materials that could cache real world events. These events could be replayed under the correct circumstances or for the correct individual, harkening back to Buchanan's theory. The concept appears to have been forgotten for a period of 60 years or so until then-president of SPR, HH Price, resurrected it in the early 1940s. He suggested that “psychic ether,” the dimension existing between the physical and the spiritual, could allow corporeal materials to retain the remains of remembrances and long-ago emotions.   Archeologist Thomas Charles Lethbridge expanded on this idea, spurred on by his time living in the notoriously haunted Hole House, suggesting that it was the energy fields that surrounded objects which stored memory and events, resulting in the appearance of ghosts or residual hauntings. His first true paranormal writing, 1961's Ghost and Ghoul, spread this theory far and wide. Lethbridge is popularly credited with originating the term “Stone Tape Theory”, which renowned investigator Sharon Hill points out is quite impossible.  The term itself originates from a 1972 television movie, The Stone Tape, which wasn't released until well after Lethbridge's death in 1971. The film dealt quite closely with the theory that Lethbridge had put forward, though it's unclear whether Lethbridge's work was directly influential on the film or not. Sharon Hill further traces the evolution of Stone Tape Theory in her article The Stone Tape Theory of Hauntings through a 1988 book called The Secret Language of Stone in which the author, Don Robins, suggests a mechanism for Stone Tape Theory (a term not used in the book, but the concept is clearly the same.) He posits that memories and events are stored as energy, and that energy is stored within irregularities found in crystals. The correct physical or psychic pressure triggers a playback of these memories or events. Hill, herself a geologist, finds this theory unconvincing.  Hill then brings the evolution of Stone Tape Theory into modern day.  She points out authors who believe the earth to behave as a photographic plate, and those who involve quantum physics in their theories, bringing the most modern scientific notions into play. What this complex and varied history of thought leaves us with is the present version of the Stone Tape Theory: that residual hauntings are created by the impression of memories within stone, the very bones of the earth, which can be replayed in a similar manner to video or audio tape.  Youtube user Strangeries has claimed to have experienced this personally. He describes the incident in his video The Stone Tape Theory. When he was a teenager, he and several of his friends were hanging out and listening to music in his bedroom. The room faced an extremely busy highway. He heard a woman's blood curdling screams accompanied by a dog howling, followed by the sound of gunshots and then silence. His friends had heard the same thing, which ought to have been impossible to hear from their location, given both the traffic and their music. He ruled out the possibility that they had overheard a literal murder, and has come to believe that what they heard was a replay of a past event.  Stories like Strangeries' are common. Ghosts all over are reported going through the same actions over and over. Many people report seeing the same apparition carrying out the same task, such as the Winchester Mystery House's Wheelbarrow Ghost, wherein a spectre continues his work with his wheelbarrow, endlessly. Similarly, the St. Louis Ghost Train famously rolls along the tracks, shining a bright white light and startling passersby, through eternity..  In terms of modern day science and the plausibility of the various theories behind the Stone Tape theory Sharon Hill feels that they're entirely implausible.  Hill says –  There are specific technical components of these systems (like magnetic heads on recorders) that do not have a natural analog. The earth's magnetic field may be strong enough to align the polarity of newly produced rock from mid-ocean ridges, but it is not strong enough or precise enough to imprint a distinct sound or image into random existing crystals in surrounding materials. Emotion is not an energy like electricity (a stream of charged particles we can measure.) Perhaps one day science will discover a means by which the Stone Tape Theory might operate, but until then it's all anecdotes and speculation, as believers continue to search out what might be behind the phenomenon of residual hauntings.

Very British Futures

Des Kinvig's small world is turned upside when he discovers one of his customers, sexy Miss Griffin is in fact an alien from Mercury, fighting a secret war with the Xux. Is he really the only man who can help her save the Earth? Or is he just a desperate fantasist who's been listening to his UFO-mad friend Jim Piper for too long? Nigel Kneale, creator of Quatermass, writer of TV classics such The Stone Tape, 1984, and Beasts, took an unexpected turn into situation comedy for 1981's Kinvig. Starring Tony Haygarth, Patsy Rowlands, Prunella Gee and Colin Jeavons. A science fiction parody that mocked many of his fans, it has remained one of the curios of Eighties television. Minuke by Nigel Kneale Nigel Kneale Nigel Kneale was born in Barrow in Furness in 1922, which was then part of Lancashire “North of the Sands”, and since 1974 part of the modern county of Cumbria. He died in 2006 in London.  Neale's family came from the Isle of Man, which is clearly visible from the coast of Cumbria. I saw it yesterday but not today as it was too rainy. The family went back to the Isle of Man when he was six (finding Barrow too rich for their blood no doubt) and was educated in Douglas, the island's capital. His father was editor of the local newspaper. Kneale went to study law but got bored with the legal profession. Apparently he tried to join the British army at the start of the Second World War but was declared medically unfit due to photophobia.  He wrote short stories and read out his own story Tomato Cain on the BBC in 1946. Inspired by the reception his story got, he went to London to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.   He then got involved in a voice acting and writing melange of a career on the broadcast media, writing his first script in 1950. His most famous work was the Quatermass Series, a horror science fiction drama series on the BBC which was a massive success. You can find this and his later great success The Stone Tape on Youtube. He did an adaptation of Susan Hill's The Woman in Black in 1989. He adapted some of the Sharpe novels in the 1990s which were also a great success. He was invited to write for the X-Files but declined that job. So, Neale was a big cheese up until recent times. His work, particularly Quatermass and The Stone Tape are canons of British hauntology these days. Minuke Or, if I hadn't done it northern ‘my nook'. But ‘nook' it is to us.  This story is from the collection Tomato Cain and Other Stories published by Collins in 1949. The book is out of print and second-hand copies are going for nearly £400. I didn't buy one. It was requested by a listener and I was only too happy to oblige. The story is told as a frame story. It begins in media res where a man has gone to an estate agent (a realtor) interested in a property. By the end we learn that not only is the property cursed and haunted an on an old Norse burial site, but it is demolished and its site occupied by a scrap metal yard, so why would the guy be interested in it? He clearly doesn't know it's a scrap metal yard because the estate agent has to tell him. This does seem to a plot hole, but we shall forgive Nigel Kneale this. It is also possibly that someone cleverer than me will point out how I have misunderstood this point. It seems like a poltergeist story. We remember the Enfield Poltergeist from the 1970s which received a lot of publicity, but this story pre-dates that case, so couldn't be influenced by it. There was a recent long documentary on BBC Sounds about the Battersea Poltergeist, but that dates from the 1950s, so again can't have influenced Neale. The other hint is the old Norse (or even older) burial ground that underlies Minuke. This idea was picked up and used in several Hollywood horror movies. It features in The Shining where the Overlook Hotel is built on an old Native American burial ground. But this came out in 1980, so again cannot be an influence on Neale. We see this idea of archaeology creating apparitions and other supernatural events in Neale's classic TV programme The Stone Tape which I recently watched. This came out in 1972, but the idea of archaeology holding records of strongly emotional events and replaying it, is hinted at in Neale's story “You Must Listen” about a haunted telephone line. There is a haunted telephone line in this story, as well as a haunted radio that plays monster noises rather than dance music. I recently wrote an article on Medium about Phone Calls From The Dead https://medium.com/inside-the-simulation/phone-calls-from-the-dead-1894a40245e9 (Unexplained... Support this podcast

The Stone Tape was broadcast on BBC Two as a Christmas ghost story in 1972. It was written by Nigel Kneale, best known as the writer of Quatermass, for whose juxtaposition of science and superstition is a frequent theme.Peter Brock played by Michael Bryant is the petulant head of a research team for Ryan Electrics. His team is developing a new recording medium that will give the company an edge over its Japanese competitors. They move into an old Victorian mansion that has been renovated for their use. On arrival, they learn that the refurbishment of one of the rooms remains incomplete, the builders having refused to work in it because it is supposedly haunted. The room, with its stone walls, is a remnant of the original building, with foundations dating back to the Saxon era. After the team witness the haunting in particular by Jill Greeley, an emotionally sensitive computer programmer played by Jane Asher, Brock hypotheses that it is not a ghost, but that somehow the stone in the room has preserved an image of a girl's death—this "stone tape" may be the new recording medium they have been seeking.Realising that the phenomenon occurring in the room is far older than the house, Jill theorises that the stone tape can be recorded over again and again, like magnetic recording tape; Jill realises that the girl's death they are hearing is masking a much older recording, left many thousands of years ago.Returning to the room one last time, Jill's senses are besieged by a powerful, malevolent presence from the much-degraded older recording.Critically acclaimed at time of broadcast, it remains well regarded to this day as one of Nigel Kneale's best and most terrifying plays. Since its broadcast, the hypothesis of residual haunting – that ghosts are recordings of past events made by the natural environment – has come to be known as the "Stone Tape Theory".Something HorrificWhat Happens Now by Jeremy Dysonhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2097964.What_Happens_NowApparition Phase by Will Macleanhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/50498731-the-apparition-phaseThe Children of the Stoneshttps://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p08sy4cdOther links:The Stone Tape (new audio version)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAa7C30DmUsGhost Adventureshttps://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6sbzzrSpecial Mention:Worzel Gummidgehttps://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000cskwWilliam Meikle Stone Tape Blog @williemeiklehttps://williammeikleblog.wordpress.com/2019/11/14/revisiting-my-influences-the-stone-tape/$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff. Warning this book has outdated attitudes, language and cultural depiction, which may cause offence today.Harris, a young East London art teacher, notices that one of his students has a bloodied bandage around his hand. Meanwhile, a baby girl and her dog are killed by a mischief of giant rats.Harris takes the student to the hospital and sees the grieving mother with her dead child. According to the doctor, the number of seemingly unprovoked rat attacks have strangely increased. The rats become increasingly more vicious and daring, as more and more public places are attacked including A tube station and Harris' own school. Where did these mutant Rats come from and how can they be stopped!Herbert became inspired to write The Rats, his first novel, in early 1972, whilst watching Tod Browning's Dracula; specifically, after seeing the scene where Renfield describes a nightmare he had involving hordes of rats.Published 2 years later The first paperback edition sold out after three weeks. It received harsh criticism upon its publication, deemed to be far too graphic in its portrayals of death and mutilation.James Herbert went on to write 23 books (including 3 sequels to the Rats) selling over 54 million copies worldwide.Something horrific?Dark Harvest - Ann Pilling https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1764436.Black_HarvestThe Star Wars Archives. 1977–1983. 40th Anniversary Editionhttps://www.taschen.com/pages/en/catalogue/film/all/43957/facts.the_star_wars_archives_19771983_40th_anniversary_edition.htmThe Stone Tapehttps://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/cZHLDbJPNTcyXLHMVgxdQR/nigel-kneales-the-stone-tape-in-six-facts$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff. https://tonywalker.substack.com/ (Subscribe here, support The Classic Ghost Stories Podcast and obtain exclusive content.) S0208: The Empty House by Algernon Blackwood We did the Kit Bag by Algernon Blackwood as Episode 20, and there I said: Algernon Blackwood Algernon Blackwood was an English writer born in 1869 who ended up as a broadcaster on the radio and TV. His writing was very well received at this time and critics loved him. Even the great American author of weird tales HP Lovecraft cited Blackwood is one of the masters of the craft. Blackwood came from a well-to-do family and was privately educated despite that he was quite an adventurous man. He was interested in Hinduism as a young boy and his career was varied. For example, he ran a dairy farm in Canada and also hotel in the country. It became a newspaper reporter in New York City and was also a bartender and a model and also a violin teacher! All of this time, though he was always writing. He liked being outdoors and his stories often feature the outdoors. He was also interested in the occult and was a member of the hermetic order of the Golden Dawn along with such other characters is Arthur Machen and WB Yeats and Alistair Crowley. At one point he was a paranormal researcher for the British Society for Psychical Research and it is said that this story was based on a case that he investigated. The Empty House Structurally, the story is simple: our man hears of the house, he visits the house, he explores the house, weird stuff starts to happen, the ghost is revealed to be a replaying of a tragic scene from the house’s past, the protagonist is merely an observer. If he has an arc, it is the transformation of his attitude to his aunt from seeing her as a feeble old lady to a woman who is in some respects braver than he is. Blackwood lays on the dust, the shadows, the moonlight as well as scurrying beetles and some black thing that scurries off (probably a cat, maybe a rat in the dark). He does this well. We are taken right there. Michael Kellermeyer describes the story as an exploration of fear, rather than ghosts and I think that’s a good point. In that it matches some other stories like Marghatina Laski’s The Tower and H R Wakefield’s Blind Man’s Buff There’s a whole genre of ‘night in a haunted house’ stories. The Empty House Reminds me of a story I recently read from 1835, No. 252 Rue M. Le Prince by Ralph Adams Cram. That is much older, and more decadent. It’s worth a read though. In 252 Rue. Me Le Prince, as in this story, the person visiting the haunted house is merely a witness to past happenings. At least that was my take. Of course, that is like the Stone Tape theory of hauntings, which holds that the fabric of a building somehow records strong emotion and plays these scenes back as hauntings. It is also reminiscent of Blackwood’s own The Kit Bag, in that we have someone lurking out of sight who eventually is seen and in both cases they are the ghosts of criminals. The story also reminded me of Blind Man’s Buff by HR Wakefield, which we read recently , not to mention The Judge’s House by Bram Stoker, which we haven’t yet got round to. One bizarre incident in The Empty House is when he turns to see his aged aunt’s face is transformed into the face she had as a girl. He finds this horrific and turns from out, but I can’t see why it would be horrible and what purpose it has in this story. I had wondered whether she had been transformed into the murdered maid, but this does not seem to be the case. Blackwood with his stories of outdoor adventure and colourful employment history sounds very much like a man’s man and I am familiar with that archetype from my father’s attitudes and most of the rugby-playing chaps I knew. Blackwood’s stories, especially The Wendigo, are problematic for a modern audience because of their everyday racism. There is also a hint of misogyny, and ageism in his view that the aged aunt (I wonder how old she really... Support this podcast

Stone Tape Theory: Residual Hauntings or Pseudoscience? | 321

We've all heard of things that go bump in the night, but what if they are just recording of past events echoing through time? That is the heart of the Stone Tape Theory aka residual hauntings and this week's topic. Is it an honest to goodness natural phenomenon, or just pseudoscience trash for people to cash in on. Speaking of trash, CBot plays the trailer for his new movie (it sucks). Brent tried to pass the term arch cocksman off as if it is normal (it isn't). And KYLE proves once again that he is the moral compass of the show (and that is just sad). All that and more on the podcast that has never caused a residual haunting, but we do have some karaoke tapes that are pretty haunting in their own right – Hysteria 51. Special thanks to this week's sources: BooksHow to Think About Weird Things: Critical Thinking for a New Age | Theodore Schick & Lewis VaughnGhost and Ghoul | Thomas Charles LethbridgeThe Soul of Things, Or, Psychometric Researches and Discoveries| William Denton & Elizabeth M.
