For this week's episode of the Plural Pod, Gareth and Joel discuss some startling statistics about what happens to vinyl records once they've been purchased. There are reviews of fresh pressings from Clairo, Land Of Talk and Travis. We explore the world of second hand sales and find out some of the highest value titles snapped up recently, including a screamo seven inch with one hell of a story and a jazz album that caught Joel's ear. Yes, you read that right. Luke from The Record Deck tells us about his unusual business model and Tom from Cheap Indie Vinyl is temporarily indisposed. All that and we hear about what you wish would get a release on our favourite format. Get in touch with us via pluralofvinylpod@gmail.com or @PluralVinylPod on Twitter. In this chat, we get to meet Lizzie Powell, the lead singer, guitarist/multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, general jack-of-all-trades of indie rock band Land of Talk. Lizzie and I get deep into the newest Land of Talk record, Performances, which is just out on Saddle Creek. We talk aboutart and creativity, their goals for this record (and beyond), weirdness in music, the almost-defiant attitude that drive a lot of their recent work, Twins Peaks, doggos, and more. We even get a little meta on your butts and talk about the very show that Lizzie is on, which gave me a nice chance to express my profound gratitude for everyone who's agreed to come on and everyone who's listened. (That's you, by the way.) It was such a fun time, and I think you'll really enjoy it. Thanks for listening.

Land of Talk - "Weight of That Weekend" from the 2020 album Indistinct Conversations on Saddle Creek. Montreal-based singer-songwriter Elizabeth Powell revived her Land Of Talk project, releasing the new album Indistinct Conversations earlier this year. As hinted in its title, today's Song of the Day does, indeed, look at heavier topics. In a press release, Powell explained: “Weight of That Weekend” is a recognition of having been on the receiving end of a lifetime of sexual coercion, assault, boundary violations, and subsequent gaslighting. It all just came to light after an especially heavy weekend a few summers back. I was so sick of carrying all this weight that wasn’t mine to bear. So sick of being owned by all of this. Imposed on me mostly by men. I grew so sick of suffering and being slowed down by this weight. The song is a prayer for a lightness of being. A prayer for capital “L” Love. In May of last year, Land of Talk returned after a seven year hiatus. At the height of her powers, following tours with bands like Broken Social Scene and The Decemberists, Elizabeth Powell took a break. Between her vocal polyp and a laptop crash that result in the loss of an album’s worth of demos, it was time to step away. Of all things, however, it was yet another personal tragedy that ultimately brought the music back. Powell’s father suffered a major stroke, and Powell began playing again as a kind of rehab. Her father pleaded for her to start making music again, and the resulting record, Life After Youth was became one of her strongest and most personal to date. We caught up with Powell, ahead of a show opening for a reunited American Football to discuss the healing power of making music.

The band so nice, we reviewed them twice (note to self:you need to coyright that)…we first came across Canadian group Land of Talk last year during Podcast Overlord Chris Cox’s visit to the show when I picked their song “Quarry Hymns” for A Few Minutes With.Well for this go-round Kevin had us listen to the full-length that spawned that song, “Cloak and Cipher”. Let’s just say we didn’t hate it. Is that enough suspense for you?

This week at the show there’s a bit of a wrench thrown into the works. Namely, Chris (me, who’s writing this week’s text), one of your heroic leaders at OneOfUs.net. I’m a big fan of what these guys do at “Somebody Likes It“ and had been talking with Shane about coming on the show to talk an album up for some time now. And that some time…is now. I realize that generally speaking the idea has been for the guys to listen to an album they weren’t overwhelmingly familiar with (if at all) that’s otherwise well known. I broke all the rules and brought in one of my favorite records, showing my age, the unexpected 1990 pop masterpiece by Sonic Youth, “Goo“. Fortunately for the show’s usual format, nobody else there had really sat down with it before now. And BOY did we get some mixed reactions. Get "Goo" from Amazon In addition to going over the album du jour, we talked about “Quarry Hymns“ by Land of Talk and “Hero“ by Family of the Year (which was prominently featured on the Boyhood soundtrack. Oh, and also we went kinda longer than usual. That’s gonna happen when you put me on your podcast and feed me craft brews the whole time. Enjoy!
