Well, that was heartbreaking. Yellowstone (0:20) killed off one of the most beloved characters on the show and Adison Haager and Billy Dukes have all kinds of feelings. (8:30) What does Colby's death symbozlie? Plus, (16:25) what Beth's conversation with Carter means, (20:5) all about Kayce's “choice” and Counting Coup and is Lainey Wilson ever gonna make an appearance? If you're interested in Landman, stay to the end for (42:10) Billy's conversation with Sterling Whitaker about the show and what cast have told him. And of course (4:25) trivia, Q&A and more.

In what may be my final episode of 2023, this week we will see the end of Joseph Medicine Crow's amazing story of counting coup on the Germans and only realizing after he returns to the reservation following World War II, that he has fulfilled all the requirements to become a chief, and becomes the first Crow warrior in the reservation era (and most recent to date) to achieve that rank in the traditional way.As always, a very special thanks to Mountain Up Cap Company for its continued help to spread the word about the podcast on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/MountainUpCapCompany Climb to Glory! For more information about the podcast visit: · The GoA website: https://www.ghostsofarlingtonpodcast.com · Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ghostsofarlingtonpodcast· Twitter: https://twitter.com/ArlingtonGhosts· Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ghostsofarlington/
Due to holiday and work schedules, I have decided to split the final longer episode about Joseph Medicine Crow into two shorter parts. This week, we learn a little about Medicine Crow's childhood - breaking and racing horses and leading history from pre-reservation chiefs, but also going to the so-called white man school and learning English. When he left the reservation for secondary school, and met members of 30 or 40 other tribes, he became interested in know more about the Crow so he could share those stories with other. After graduating high school, he becomes on the second Crow to get a bachelors degree, when he graduated from Linfield University in Oregon, and the first to get a masters degree, when he graduated from the University of Southern California. He stayed at USC long enough to complete all the necessary coursework for a PhD, but World War II broke out before he could complete his dissertation. When he was inducted into the Army, one of the officers interviewing the new inductees happened to be Medicine Crow's old roommate at Linfield. He offered Medicine Crow an officer's commission, but he declined the offer, wanting instead to rise through the ranks like his grandfather Medicine Crow had. Unfortunately, the US Army doesn't operate on Crow principles and Medicine Crow never had another change to become an officer. He said turning down his old roommate was the worst decision of his life, though it would give him the chance to emulate his warrior ancestors that he wouldn't have had otherwise. As always, a very special thanks to Mountain Up Cap Company for its continued help to spread the word about the podcast on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/MountainUpCapCompany Climb to Glory! For more information about the podcast visit: · The GoA website: https://www.ghostsofarlingtonpodcast.com · Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ghostsofarlingtonpodcast· Twitter: https://twitter.com/ArlingtonGhosts· Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ghostsofarlington/
November is National Native American Heritage Month here in the United States. With that in mind, I talk about the history of that celebration, and talk a little about the Plains Indians and the Crow Nation. What does any of that have to do with Arlington National Cemetery? Not much. But it has a lot to do with Joseph Medicine Crow, a World War II veteran who used his time in service to become the last war chief of the Crows, and though Dr. Medicine Crow is buried on the reservation, I felt his story was one that needed to be told.As always, a very special thanks to Mountain Up Cap Company for its continued help to spread the word about the podcast on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/MountainUpCapCompany Climb to Glory! For more information about the podcast visit: · The GoA website: https://www.ghostsofarlingtonpodcast.com · Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ghostsofarlingtonpodcast· Twitter: https://twitter.com/ArlingtonGhosts· Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ghostsofarlington/
It may be a brutal reality, but the moment you step out, sit down, or take a break, you'll start falling behind. This has been the state that individuals live by in Special Operations, cutting edge Industry, and those kinds of pursuits that require aspiration. Never being allowed to rest on your achievements may sound like a truly frustrating way to live, but when it comes to life-and-death stakes, that's just the way of it, and we can't really get away from it. In this discussion, we also address what steps individuals can take to vet an instructor. We all started somewhere, some of us with terrible experiences, or with bad habits that took years to smooth out. Glory in Battle. The Death of the Anti-Hero, and here we are at. In this conversation with Fred of Counting Coup Tactical, we address how so much of Gun Culture has been using capability as a vector for evaluating the morality of the subject. This leads to a discussion on how the increased capabilities of both individuals and government has opened up new moral quandaries. At what cost? At what cost do we maintain liberty or safety, and are they at odds? The capability of government organizations to collect data expands, it also leads to new question on who are of interest, and what that entails when it comes to a society which at least claims to value freedom. In the second half we look at what the long term goal of Gun Culture could be. After over twenty years in the Air Force, and multiple deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria, Fred has moved into the civilian world as the head of research and development at Spiritus Systems working on some of the best gear you can get your hands on. I was fortunate enough to get some of Fred's time to sit down and talk about his experiences, but also some of his observations around our community today. As a man who's seen plenty, and done plenty more, his perspective on things like armor, shooting, communication, kit selection, and training are unique and valuable. This was a outstanding conversation, and I know that you'll enjoy it.
Fred, Counting Coup Tactical, former AF Combat Controller cool guy and current Spiritus cool guy, joins the lads once again to hit some deep topics! Starting out by touching on Fred's recent experiences working on physical and mental health with some herbal assistance and how he felt getting off of medications, Mitch gets into his own experiences seeing the difference between just showing up for therapy and putting in the work to get better, what could be done better with troops transitioning from combat deployments back stateside, how the military will readily leave the individual behind out of convenience, the issue of retaining troops and how money is thrown at recruitment bonuses over maintaining those currently enlisted and why the Army has so many Generals with seemingly pointless jobs. Also, Mitch asks Fred if he can ever relax and do nothing, doing good without expecting to be rewarded and much more! Larry Colton always wanted to be a baseball player. He gave it a good shot. He holds the UC Berkley single game strikeout record of 19 batters, was a pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies (he only pitched 2 innings), was the designated hitter for the Portland Mavericks (independent league A ball) for a few weeks and finally left baseball behind to become a writer - and a very good one. He is the author of five books and one of them, Counting Coup, about a girls’ basketball team in Montana, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. I met him at a baseball coaches clinic in Gresham Oregon and he agreed to come on the show because our local senior league team is named after the Portland Mavericks. This one is just for fun.
A huge part of being successful at hunting and finding elk is being able to read their sign. Knowing what to look for. Knowing the difference between old and fresh sign. What it means if you are seeing sign, but not seeing elk.For a first time elk hunter, it could take years of learning to decipher everything involved when reading Elk sign. But guys and gals, it’s nothing that a few visits to the ol’ Elk Camp won’t be able to help you with.In this episode your Elk Hunting Coaches are going to talk about all aspects of elk sign. From there they have a great discussion on “Closing the Gap” on elk during an encounter and then the guys talk about “Counting Coup”. What it is and the benefits. They also share some great stories along the way.So friends, pull up a chair and Welcome to Elk Camp! Please remember to Review, Rate and Subscribe to the podcast in Apple iTunes or on the Apple Podcast App. You can find more Elk Hunting content on the ElkBros.com site and if you join our Elk Camp there, you will be in the know anytime we put out a video, podcast or special promo code.If you like who we are, what we do, how we do it and would like to help us keep the lights on, you can contribute to ElkBros on our Patreon site and help us insure that others may also have the same incredible experiences and opportunities that has made our lives so special. Welcome back to Catfish Lou’s at 2460 NW 24th for another OMN Coffeeshop Conversation. As you may have noticed we talk to more than music industry people. Like today, for instance. I re-watched the documentary, “The Battling Bastards of Baseball” the other night. Larry Colton popped up in it. He was a member of the Portland Mavericks. I thought, “Oh yeah, he would make a great guest.” Larry is also a Pulitzer Prize nominated author for his book “Counting Coup.” He’s written a lot of great books and is working on more. I did a TV story on him in the past and we had a lot of fun. That’s why he’s here. He also founded Wordstock and a lot of other things. We could have gone on a lot longer but he’s always welcome back. Meet Larry Colton.
