Higher Learning Reaction, Recap, Breakdown, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review! Greg Alba & Coy Jandreau take on Higher Learning, the 1995 drama directed by John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious) that tackles themes of race, identity, privilege, and systemic injustice in the American college experience. The film follows three freshmen—Malik (Omar Epps), Kristen (Kristy Swanson), and Remy (Michael Rapaport)—as they navigate the pressures of higher education, racial tensions, and personal transformation at the fictional Columbus University. Some of the most intense and pivotal moments include Malik's struggle with his track scholarship and racial identity, Remy's descent into white supremacy under the influence of Cole Hauser's character, and the tragic climactic shooting scene that shakes the entire campus. Other powerful moments include Ice Cube's character Fudge dropping hard truths about systemic racism, Laurence Fishburne's powerful lectures as Professor Phipps, and the heartbreaking fates of several key characters that still resonate today. Omar Epps as Malik Williams (Love & Basketball, House), Kristy Swanson as Kristen Connor (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Phantom), Michael Rapaport as Remy (True Romance, Atypical), Ice Cube as Fudge (Friday, Barbershop), Jennifer Connelly as Taryn (A Beautiful Mind, Requiem for a Dream), Tyra Banks as Deja (Coyote Ugly, America's Next Top Model), Laurence Fishburne as Professor Phipps (The Matrix, John Wick 2), Cole Hauser as Scott Moss (Yellowstone, 2 Fast 2 Furious), Regina King as Monet (Watchmen, If Beale Street Could Talk), and Busta Rhymes as Dreads (Halloween: Resurrection, Shaft). If you're a fan of John Singleton's socially conscious films, be sure to check out Boyz N the Hood (1991), Poetic Justice (1993), Baby Boy (2001), and Four Brothers (2005). Send us a textKatie and Bridget do some math on random chalkboards as they re-watch the iconic 90's hit: Good Will Hunting! It's a movie all about how maybe the janitor at your university is actually a secret genius who isn't able to recognize his own potential AND enjoys randomly beating people up whenever! ...IT COULD HAPPEN! Come along as we meet Will Hunting, a math/general genius/janitor who's intellect gets discovered by an MIT professor. To use their white privilege in order to avoid jail time, Will has to not only hang with the professor to do math (yes we think that's weird too), but he also has to go to therapy. Thank god that therapy is with ROBIN WILLIAMS! Will's life also takes a turn when he meets a girl who's not afraid to call him out on his shit and go off to California when he's being a jerk. With the help of therapy, some public shaming, and of course - Ben Affleck - Will faces his hardships and finally starts to aim for a higher purpose in life. You could say he's... DEFYINGGGG GRAVITYYYYY (sorry not sorry)! Released in 1997, it was written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and stars themselves along with Robin Williams, Stellan Skarsgård, Minnie Driver, Cole Hauser, and Casey Affleck.

Avoid those paddles and fry like bacon you little freshman piggies as we trip on a bit of 1990s nostalgia for the 1970s in Rochard Linklater's Dazed and Confused. Has institutional child endangerment on this level ever actually existed? Why is Milla Jovovich so tragically underused? How does Matthew McConaughey manage to make a total creeper still somehow charming? And is Rory Cochran the ultimate acting chameleon? All we know is that what some of us love about this movie is that we keep getting older, and it stays the same age.

It's time to dust off the gritty 90s VHS archives for an honest and gut wrenching film about growing up in NYC, discovering your queer identity, and the complexities of female relationships. Jules is along for this episode where we talk 'All Over Me' from 1997. I first rented this in high school and it has been on my list to watch again. This film grew on us as we compared to other films of the time that feel more like a documentary and a visual portrait. The soundtrack was completely up our alley with bands like Babes in Toyland, Helium, and Patti Smith. The fashion was so realistic and inspires today, we read some Letterboxd reviews, and discuss other intense female friendships on film that we enjoy.Watch the film on Youtube: https://youtu.be/OmfqcIlvd5w?si=xo1q0X8uFDy5agx8---Get BONUS episodes on 90s/00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! No one wanted to come back and watch the finale of The Muppets Mayhem with us. That doesn't mean anything, does it? It does. It means we lose our way into Two And A Half Men, The Fast And The Furious, directing extras, Morphine (the band), Snake Eyes (the G.I. Joe) and... Ernest P. Worrell? It also means this show is over and maybe that's not as much of a relief as you and all of our guests thought it would be.
