What truly changed at Le Mans when the 2000s began—and why did teams abandon open cockpits just as speeds stayed sky high? We invited author and photographer John Brooks to walk us through the decade he chronicles in Le Mans: The Official History 2000–2009, and his trackside vantage point delivers a rare blend of technical clarity and human detail. From Audi's R8 and R10 TDI era to Peugeot's blistering 908, we explore how diesel power, aero efficiency, and rule changes made reliability the ultimate performance edge.John pulls back the curtain on the engineering trade-offs that redefined endurance racing: the gains in safety that came with closed cockpits, the pit stop calculations that win 24-hour fights, and the unsung collaboration between European operations and American squads like Champion Racing. He also shares how he inherited the official history project from the legendary Quentin Spurring, why the 2000–2009 window stands on its own, and how writing the story with his own photographs turns a coffee-table book into a time machine. We keep the wrenches turning beyond the track. Jeff breaks down the easiest cars to work on—Toyota Corolla and Camry, Kia Rio, Chevrolet Silverado, Honda Accord, and Mazda MX-5—spotlighting accessible engine bays, abundant parts, and weekend-friendly maintenance. Then we climb into the 2025 Chrysler Pacifica, a thoughtful family hauler with stow-and-go versatility, a smooth 3.6L V6, available AWD, and cabin tech that keeps everyone calm mile after mile.If you're searching for Le Mans history, Audi vs Peugeot, prototype safety, and real-world car advice in one place, you're home. Looking for the perfect tool gift for the hard-to-shop-for DIYer? John and Larry reveal why choosing the right tool platform, minimizing battery charger overload, and understanding someone's "mechanical rating" might be the key to buying a gift they'll actually use. What essential tools does almost every homeowner overlook? And which cordless vacuums, inflators, or ratchets are worth grabbing before Black Friday hits? Listeners step into the conversation with real-world dilemmas—like Jerry from Greeley, asking whether battery-powered snowblowers can finally replace gas machines. Are single-stage or two-stage models better for Colorado's unpredictable storms? Could battery tech make winter cleanup easier than ever? Then Steve calls in with a twist: travel CO detectors, Airbnb safety gaps, and the surprising new wave of security tech that might soon replace Wi-Fi systems altogether. Heard of Terra Firma? Their light-based security systems could change everything. The episode even detours into futuristic territory—fuel cells, natural gas, and the bizarre issues John sees at gas stations every week. As the hour winds down, the hosts share hidden-gem gift ideas, like LED paddle lights that instantly transform any garage, shop, or workspace. Whether you're prepping for winter, upgrading your toolbox, or hunting for the perfect Christmas gift… this episode asks the questions every homeowner should be thinking about—and answers the ones you didn't know you had. Most makers want their work to look authentic, but too often GFRC ends up looking like plastic instead of stone. That disconnect leaves artisans frustrated and searching for answers. In this episode of The Concrete Podcast, we unpack why that happens, how to avoid it, and what it takes to get your concrete to look and feel the way it should. We'll also walk through the bigger question every DIYer and pro faces - how do you choose the right mix for countertops, sinks, furniture, and tile? Not all mixes are created equal, and the wrong one can cost you time, money, and the quality of your work. By the end, you'll understand what to look for, what to stay away from, and how to make confident choices that elevate your craft. If you've been struggling with “plasticky” finishes or just wondering what makes a truly great concrete mix, this conversation will give you the clarity you need. SHOW NOTES: Welcome to another great show here on The Money Pit, where we're always here to remind you that you can do it yourself, but you don't have to do it alone! If you're a DIYer, join us for this week's top home improvement tips, including: - Home Improvement ROI: We unveil the top five home improvement projects that deliver the best return on your investment, perfect for boosting equity and impressing buyers. Learn why fall is a great time to start these projects due to cooler weather and more flexible contractor schedules. - DIY Pavestone Fire Pit: Get a step-by-step guide to building a modern square fire pit using Ladera Wall Block from Pavestone. This DIY-friendly project requires no cutting or special caps, making it a perfect weekend upgrade to transform your outdoor space with a rock-solid, heat-safe feature. - Color Trends for 2026: We explore the latest trends in color strategy for 2026, focusing on warm, earthy color palettes like terracotta, ochre, and olive, as well as soft textural neutrals and restorative darks. - Preventing Frozen Pipes: As the fall chill arrives, we offer crucial advice on preventing frozen pipes by disconnecting outdoor hoses, shutting off exterior spigots, and insulating exposed pipes in unheated areas. Q & A: - Robert from Michigan wonders if an air heat pump would be a more efficient heating solution for his older house with electric baseboard heat. A mini-split system is very efficient, but it's best to set the thermostat and leave it, using baseboard heat only as a backup for extra chilly days. - Mary from Delaware is replacing her 25-year-old shingles and asks about a replacement attic fan versus a ridge vent. We recommend a continuous ridge vent paired with soffit vents instead, since attic fans can pull air-conditioned air from the house into the attic and increase cooling costs. - Thurman from Arkansas has a blank wall and wants to know what's needed to install a new window. While it's a DIY-doable project for a smaller window, we suggest hiring a pro if he's not comfortable with disassembling and reassembling a load-bearing wall. - Steve needs guidance on repairing crumbling grout on his front stoop. We advise chiseling out the old grout and vacuuming loose debris, then using a Type M mortar that's recommended for its strength and applied with a piping bag. With a sprinkle of humor and a dash of personal stories, Eric paints a picture of how to choose the right material based on your lifestyle, budget, and the look you're going for. He shares tales of his own home projects, giving us a glimpse into his design process and how he tackles challenges along the way.As the hour flies by, Eric starts breaking down the countertop choices room by room. Whether it's for a sleek bathroom or a bustling kitchen, he offers practical advice that's easy to digest. And let's not forget his witty commentary on common pitfalls—seriously, you don't want to get caught with a countertop that doesn't play nice with the moisture of a bathroom or the heat of a kitchen! By the end of this episode, listeners will not only have a clearer understanding of what countertop materials to choose but also feel empowered to embark on their own home improvement adventures. So, whether you're a seasoned DIYer or a newbie, grab your tools and let's get to work!Takeaways: When choosing countertops, think about the overall project plan to avoid costly mistakes later on. Marble looks stunning but may not be practical for families with kids due to stains and maintenance. Consider man-made materials like quartz for their durability and stain resistance, especially in busy kitchens. Sintered stone is becoming popular for outdoor kitchens due to its durability against extreme weather conditions. If you're going for a DIY project, materials like paper stone offer a unique aesthetic and are surprisingly manageable. Don't forget to think about the backsplash materials simultaneously when designing your kitchen or bathroom surfaces. In the 92nd episode of WGI Unleashed, we're excited to introduce you to Jason Miholovitz, PLA, our Director of Landscape Architecture, who joins us from WGI's West Palm Beach Corporate Headquarters! With over 20 years of experience, Jason's deep passion for design and a thoughtful leadership style have helped shape WGI's national landscape architecture practice, and his story is just as inspiring as the spaces he helps create each and every day. From Sketches to Studios Like many, Jason's love for design started at an early age - Inspired by his high school drafting classes and a natural talent for drawing, he pursued the study of architecture at the University of Florida, where he ultimately refined his interests and discovered his passion for landscape architecture. After graduation, a job fair frisbee - and a well-timed beer koozie - led him to his first role within the industry.... And the rest, as they say, is history. The chance encounter sparked a 10-year career with his first firm, where he met his wife, built a foundation in public-sector work, and eventually launched his current career with WGI. Designing for Both People and Place Today, Jason leads five landscape architecture studios across the nation, each with its own unique identity and design approach. Under his guidance, the group blends the best of both worlds - public and private sector work - offering clients a depth of experience that they can't find elsewhere. From vibrant parks and public spaces to amenity-rich pool decks atop high-rises, Jason's portfolio of projects reflects his belief that landscape architecture is about more than aesthetics - it's about creating a sense of space that people can love. His favorite part of the career that has brought him so much? Visiting parks he's helped design and watching his son enjoy the very spaces he's helped bring to life. A Culture of Creativity and Trust And if you're wondering what keeps Jason inspired at WGI, that's simple.... It's the people - and the freedom to lead with trust. He's proud of the collaborative, cross-functional environment he's helped foster, where each studio operates like its own small business, giving team members room to grow, experiment, and shape their own paths. That same autonomy Jason values in his own role is what he now passes down to his team. It's a leadership philosophy rooted in respect, accountability, and empowering others to take creative risks. Life Outside the Office When not leading national design studios, Jason enjoys staying close to home with his wife and son. He's a hands-on DIYer, working on home projects and restoring classic cars - including a ‘69 Camaro passed down from his father. And while he's traded the college party scene for backyard soccer and family trips to Key West, Jason wouldn't have it any other way. Tune In This episode is filled with great stories—from childhood bike rides in South Florida to building a nationwide team of talented designers. One thing I love about the VW world is there's never a dull moment and there's always something new. For example, the Devin this is the first time I've ever seen this car was at a type three rally meet up in front of ISP West that's when I got to meet Reid Kerlin . Reid is the owner of this Devin 295. It's called the Devon 295 because it cost $295 back in the day it was a kit car that was made for multiple different chassis for the ultimate enthusiast that wanted to build their own sports car on this podcast we get into some of the history of the Devin as well as Read's personal history in the VW scene. He's a great guy and this car is even cooler. Like most of us with his life, starting in a Volkswagen that his parents owned and loving the car itself with the pursuit to find something unique. He stumbled across this Devin. It's a very cool car one of the few that has a type three motor in it has a matter fact it's the only one that he knows of the registry is keeping track of some of these, but Bill Devin, who started the company in 1954 wasn't very good at keep records.
