Patrice Boone from Synchrony Bank dives headfirst into the murky waters of homeownership costs in a riveting conversation with Eric G and John Dudley. Buckle up, folks, because the numbers she shares are not just eye-opening; they're downright jaw-dropping! Homeowners often underestimate the yearly costs of maintaining their abodes, with many thinking they'll spend around $1,000 to $5,000 annually. Spoiler alert: the actual average is more than $7,000! Patrice pulls back the curtain on the shocking realization that over a lifetime, homeowners can spend upwards of $339,000 just maintaining their homes. That's right, we're talking about a sum that could buy you another house! But it's not just about the big ticket items like HVAC systems or roof replacements. Patrice highlights how regular maintenance - that pesky caulking around the windows or cleaning out the gutters - can snowball into enormous costs if neglected. It's like that little drip in the plumbing that you think is no big deal until it turns into a full-blown flood. The conversation also meanders through the emotional landscape of homeownership, addressing how homeowners live with anxiety over unexpected repairs and financial strain. Patrice underscores the importance of budgeting and proactive maintenance, which many homeowners overlook. After all, it's not just about paying the mortgage; it's about keeping your sanctuary in tip-top shape without breaking the bank! As the episode unfolds, the trio discusses the lack of preparation homeowners have regarding these costs, revealing that 72% feel anxious about affording necessary repairs. This is where Synchrony Bank steps in, offering a lifeline through financing options like the Synchrony project card, which allows homeowners to manage those daunting bills without losing their minds. Patrice's insights, peppered with humor and relatability, transform what could be a dry topic into an engaging discussion that empowers listeners to take control of their home maintenance journey. So, if you're a homeowner—or plan to be—this episode is a must-listen. It could save you from future financial headaches and help you approach homeownership with a clearer, more informed mindset.Takeaways:Home maintenance costs average more than $7,000 per year, which can really add up.The lifetime cost of home repairs can shock you, averaging around $339,000 to $418,000.Many homeowners underestimate maintenance needs, often thinking they can just fix issues later.A staggering 78% of homeowners lack a formal budget for routine maintenance—yikes!Emergency repairs like HVAC system failures can cost upwards of $8,000 on average, so prepare accordingly. Most homeowners feel anxious about unexpected repairs, which is totally understandable given the costs involved.Links referenced in this episode:aroundthehouseonline.comCompanies mentioned in this episode:SynchronyThanks for listening to Around the house if you want to hear more please subscribe so you get notified of the latest episode as it posts at https://around-the-house-with-e.captivate.fm/listenIf you want to join the Around the House Insider for access to the back catalog, Exclusive Content and a direct email to Eric G and access to the show early https://around-the-house-with-e.captivate.fm/support We love comments and we would love reviews on how this information has helped you on your house! They've been doing this for ages, and they're here to share their wisdom. From clearing debris around your outdoor AC unit (because we definitely don't want to fry that expensive piece of equipment!) to inspecting window wells and gutters for any signs of wear and tear, they cover it all. Think of this checklist as your home's spring cleaning ritual, but instead of dusting off knick-knacks, we're getting our abodes ready to weather whatever crazy weather comes our way. Eric shares tales of unfortunate plants meeting their demise due to unexpected frosts, while John throws in some tech-savvy tips on maintaining those energy-efficient appliances. It's a blend of practical advice, personal anecdotes, and a touch of humor that makes this episode a must-listen for any homeowner looking to keep their space in tip-top shape!Takeaways:Spring is the perfect time to clean the outdoor AC unit and ensure nothing blocks airflow, preventing costly repairs later.Be sure to clear out gutters and downspouts to avoid water damage to your home, as even a little blockage can cause big problems.Regularly check and replace weatherstripping on doors and windows to keep the energy bills down and comfort up.Inspecting your foundation for cracks and checking if they're stable can save you from a potential $77,000 repair down the road.Don't forget to clean those window screens and appliances—neglect can lead to bigger headaches and expenses later on.Make sure to schedule an inspection of your roof and gutters at least once a year to catch issues before they snowball.Links referenced in this episode:aroundthehouseonline.comredwingshoes.comCompanies mentioned in this episode:Red WingThanks for listening to Around the house if you want to hear more please subscribe so you get notified of the latest episode as it posts at https://around-the-house-with-e.captivate.fm/listenIf you want to join the Around the House Insider for access to the back catalog, Exclusive Content and a direct email to Eric G and access to the show early https://around-the-house-with-e.captivate.fm/support We love comments and we would love reviews on how this information has helped you on your house! Old Homes vs. New Builds: Are We Doing It Wrong?

Are we building homes like we used to? That's the million-dollar question Eric G and co-host John Dudley dive into, and trust me, it's juicier than a ripe peach on a summer day! They kick off by exploring the nostalgic charm of old homes versus the cookie-cutter vibes of new builds, debating whether modern engineering has really upgraded our living spaces or if we're just trading craftsmanship for speed. Spoiler alert: It's a mixed bag! They also tackle the age-old debate of old growth versus new growth lumber, dissecting whether the lumber of yesteryears truly outshines today's tech-savvy alternatives. So grab your headphones, kick back, and join us for a lively chat that's part history lesson, part construction critique, and all-around fun! Eric G and John Dudley kick off their podcast episode by plunging into a hot topic: the age-old question of whether homes today are built like they used to be. With the charm of a casual chat, they dissect the statement, “They don't build them like they used to,” navigating through the nostalgia of classic homes and the realities of modern construction. Eric, a self-proclaimed lover of vintage homes, waxes poetic about the intricate craftsmanship and unique character that older houses possess. However, he quickly balances this affection with the practicality of modern engineering, arguing that while aesthetics were paramount in the past, today's homes are built with a focus on safety, durability, and structural integrity that often wasn't a priority back in the day. Transitioning to the great lumber debate, Eric and John delve into the merits of old growth versus new growth lumber. Eric playfully challenges the notion that older timber is always superior, explaining how advancements in engineered materials have revolutionized construction. He sheds light on how modern engineering techniques ensure that new homes can withstand the test of time, providing a level of safety that older homes often lack. John adds a humorous touch, recalling his own experiences with older homes that, while beautiful, sometimes feel like they were built with a mix of sheer luck and questionable materials. Their banter is both entertaining and informative, as they explore how the materials and methods of construction have evolved, leading to a better understanding of what truly makes a home resilient. Wrapping up the first hour, Eric and John remind listeners that whether you're a fan of the vintage charm or the sleek functionality of modern homes, the key takeaway is understanding what goes into the making of a house. They advocate for thorough inspections and informed decisions in home buying and renovations, emphasizing that in today's fast-paced construction environment, it's crucial to know what you're getting into. With a blend of humor and insightful commentary, they leave their audience pondering the complexities of home construction and the legacy of craftsmanship, ensuring that the conversation continues beyond the podcast.Takeaways:In the podcast, Eric G and John Dudley discuss the age-old debate about whether homes are built better today than in the past, and the conversation is rich with insights and a good dose of humor. They tackle the topic of old growth versus new growth lumber, highlighting how technology has improved home building, yet nostalgia for craftsmanship remains strong. One key insight is that while old homes may have charm, modern engineering ensures new houses are structurally sound and built to withstand the elements much better than their predecessors. The co-hosts cleverly point out that the materials used in construction have evolved, leading to stronger homes, but sometimes at the cost of long-term durability due to cheaper alternatives.Listeners are reminded that while building codes have improved, execution can vary widely, resulting in some new homes built with questionable practices that would make older builders cringe.Ultimately, the episode emphasizes the balance between appreciating the craftsmanship of older homes and recognizing the advancements in safety and efficiency that modern techniques bring to today's construction.Links referenced in this episode:aroundthehouse.online.comaroundthehousehqredwingshoes.comCompanies mentioned in this episode:Red WingPanasonicSimpsonThanks for listening to Around the house if you want to hear more please subscribe so you get notified of the latest episode as it posts at https://around-the-house-with-e.captivate.fm/listenIf you want to join the Around the House Insider for access to the back catalog, Exclusive Content and a direct email to Eric G and access to the show early https://around-the-house-with-e.captivate.fm/support We love comments and we would love reviews on how this information has helped you on your house! From the resurgence of bold jewel tones to the perils of picking paint in the wrong lighting, this episode is packed with insights that will elevate your DIY game without sending you into a color-induced panic. So, whether you're stuck in a beige rut or just looking to spice things up, we've got the tips and tricks to help you paint like a pro. Let's roll up those sleeves and get ready to splash some color into our lives! Color is the name of the game in this lively chat with Wendy Glaister from Wendy Glaister Interiors, where Eric G and John Dudley dive deep into the colorful world of paint choices. As spring rolls around, the trio discusses how a fresh coat of paint can lift your spirits and change the vibe of your space, especially after the post-holiday slump. Wendy brings her expertise on color trends, revealing that deep jewel tones like hunter green and Bordeaux are making a comeback. She argues that while many have overdone the '50 shades of gray' look, it's time to embrace vibrant hues that reflect our personalities and lifestyles. The conversation moves beyond color palettes to practical tips on choosing the right sheens and finishes, emphasizing that the way a paint looks can dramatically shift based on the lighting and the surfaces being painted. Wendy's insights into the challenges of picking the right color while considering undertones and lighting conditions are not just informative but also entertaining, as the trio shares their own blunders and triumphs in the world of painting. Get ready to take notes, because you'll want to avoid those ‘Navajo white' moments and instead, find your perfect color match.Takeaways:Choosing the right paint color can transform your space and uplift your mood, so don't be shy—go bold!Wendy dropped some serious knowledge on using proper lighting when selecting paint colors; it can make or break your choice!Using larger color samples instead of tiny chips is crucial for making confident color decisions—size matters, folks!Paint prep is everything; skip the primer at your own peril, or you'll end up regretting that 'great' color choice.Don't let your painter convince you that a different brand will match your chosen color—trust me, it rarely works out!Sheen matters just as much as color; a matte finish can hide imperfections, while gloss will show every flaw!Links referenced in this episode:aroundthehouseonline.comCompanies mentioned in this episode:Wendy Glaister InteriorsChip and Joanna GainesBenjamin MooreSherwin WilliamsRalph LaurenMaria KillamPacific Shore StonesMentioned in this episode:Take a second and leave us a review on your favorite podcast player! What truly changed at Le Mans when the 2000s began—and why did teams abandon open cockpits just as speeds stayed sky high? We invited author and photographer John Brooks to walk us through the decade he chronicles in Le Mans: The Official History 2000–2009, and his trackside vantage point delivers a rare blend of technical clarity and human detail. From Audi's R8 and R10 TDI era to Peugeot's blistering 908, we explore how diesel power, aero efficiency, and rule changes made reliability the ultimate performance edge.John pulls back the curtain on the engineering trade-offs that redefined endurance racing: the gains in safety that came with closed cockpits, the pit stop calculations that win 24-hour fights, and the unsung collaboration between European operations and American squads like Champion Racing. He also shares how he inherited the official history project from the legendary Quentin Spurring, why the 2000–2009 window stands on its own, and how writing the story with his own photographs turns a coffee-table book into a time machine. We keep the wrenches turning beyond the track. Jeff breaks down the easiest cars to work on—Toyota Corolla and Camry, Kia Rio, Chevrolet Silverado, Honda Accord, and Mazda MX-5—spotlighting accessible engine bays, abundant parts, and weekend-friendly maintenance. Then we climb into the 2025 Chrysler Pacifica, a thoughtful family hauler with stow-and-go versatility, a smooth 3.6L V6, available AWD, and cabin tech that keeps everyone calm mile after mile.If you're searching for Le Mans history, Audi vs Peugeot, prototype safety, and real-world car advice in one place, you're home. On this episode of Fix It Radio, host John Rush and co-host Larry Unger kick off Thanksgiving week with a lively, hands-on guide to smarter homeownership—packed with practical wisdom, real listener questions, and a few surprises you won't see coming. Looking for the perfect tool gift for the hard-to-shop-for DIYer? John and Larry reveal why choosing the right tool platform, minimizing battery charger overload, and understanding someone's "mechanical rating" might be the key to buying a gift they'll actually use. What essential tools does almost every homeowner overlook? And which cordless vacuums, inflators, or ratchets are worth grabbing before Black Friday hits? Listeners step into the conversation with real-world dilemmas—like Jerry from Greeley, asking whether battery-powered snowblowers can finally replace gas machines. Are single-stage or two-stage models better for Colorado's unpredictable storms? Could battery tech make winter cleanup easier than ever? Then Steve calls in with a twist: travel CO detectors, Airbnb safety gaps, and the surprising new wave of security tech that might soon replace Wi-Fi systems altogether. Heard of Terra Firma? Their light-based security systems could change everything. The episode even detours into futuristic territory—fuel cells, natural gas, and the bizarre issues John sees at gas stations every week. As the hour winds down, the hosts share hidden-gem gift ideas, like LED paddle lights that instantly transform any garage, shop, or workspace. In this episode of The Concrete Podcast, we unpack why that happens, how to avoid it, and what it takes to get your concrete to look and feel the way it should. We'll also walk through the bigger question every DIYer and pro faces - how do you choose the right mix for countertops, sinks, furniture, and tile? Not all mixes are created equal, and the wrong one can cost you time, money, and the quality of your work. By the end, you'll understand what to look for, what to stay away from, and how to make confident choices that elevate your craft. This DIY-friendly project requires no cutting or special caps, making it a perfect weekend upgrade to transform your outdoor space with a rock-solid, heat-safe feature. - Color Trends for 2026: We explore the latest trends in color strategy for 2026, focusing on warm, earthy color palettes like terracotta, ochre, and olive, as well as soft textural neutrals and restorative darks. - Preventing Frozen Pipes: As the fall chill arrives, we offer crucial advice on preventing frozen pipes by disconnecting outdoor hoses, shutting off exterior spigots, and insulating exposed pipes in unheated areas.   Q & A: - Robert from Michigan wonders if an air heat pump would be a more efficient heating solution for his older house with electric baseboard heat. A mini-split system is very efficient, but it's best to set the thermostat and leave it, using baseboard heat only as a backup for extra chilly days. - Mary from Delaware is replacing her 25-year-old shingles and asks about a replacement attic fan versus a ridge vent. We recommend a continuous ridge vent paired with soffit vents instead, since attic fans can pull air-conditioned air from the house into the attic and increase cooling costs. - Thurman from Arkansas has a blank wall and wants to know what's needed to install a new window. While it's a DIY-doable project for a smaller window, we suggest hiring a pro if he's not comfortable with disassembling and reassembling a load-bearing wall. - Steve needs guidance on repairing crumbling grout on his front stoop. We advise chiseling out the old grout and vacuuming loose debris, then using a Type M mortar that's recommended for its strength and applied with a piping bag.   ASK A QUESTION: Need help with your own home improvement or décor question? They're diving into an innovative product that makes DIY repairs a breeze, so you can transform your worn-out concrete back to its former glory without breaking the bank or your back. But hold onto your tool belts, because the fun doesn't stop there! Eric then spills the tea on the sneaky costs of trying to save a few bucks on window repairs—spoiler alert: it might just cost you more in the long run. Whether you're a seasoned DIYer or a weekend warrior, this episode is packed with insights to help you keep your home looking sharp!Eric G. and Todd Harris dive into the world of DIY concrete restoration in this episode, showcasing a revolutionary product that allows homeowners to rejuvenate their driveways and patios without breaking the bank or calling in the pros. With a playful banter that makes home improvement feel less daunting and more accessible, they discuss how Todd's company, LikeNuConcrete, has developed a user-friendly solution for restoring worn-out concrete surfaces. The conversation sizzles with insights on the application process, which Todd breaks down into four simple steps: cleaning, mixing, spraying, and sealing. Todd explains how the product penetrates the concrete, transforming it into a fresh-looking surface without the hassle of troweling or extensive labor. They also touch on the importance of following instructions for optimal results, likening the experience to a fun DIY adventure instead of a chore. In the second half of the show, Eric shifts gears to address the pitfalls of trying to save money on window replacements. He shares a cautionary tale about the challenges of replacing glass in older aluminum windows, revealing how labor costs can often outweigh the benefits of simply swapping out panes. With his usual wit, he highlights that sometimes, going for a full window replacement can actually be the more cost-effective and practical solution, especially when considering long-term value and curb appeal. The episode wraps up with Eric offering sage advice on the best practices for window replacements, ensuring listeners come away with valuable takeaways for their own home improvement projects.Takeaways: Eric and Todd break down how easy it is to restore your concrete driveway or patio without breaking the bank or hiring a pro—seriously, it's like DIY magic! Using LikeNuConcrete's product means you can transform your aged concrete into something that looks brand new—no trowel skills needed, just a sprayer and some elbow grease! In the second half, Eric shares the harsh reality of window replacements, emphasizing how trying to save money could backfire and cost you more in the long run—yikes! If your windows are blown out, replacing the entire unit might be more cost-effective than just swapping out the glass, especially in older homes like Eric's built in '79. Todd explains that LikeNuConcrete is incredibly forgiving, which is a huge relief for those of us who aren't concrete pros—mistakes can be easily fixed with a quick spritz! Cleaning the concrete properly before application is crucial; it's like giving your surface a good bath before the makeover, ensuring the product adheres beautifully. Have you ever found yourself hoping that the next style system you find will finally allow you to crack the code on what you should wear? As a personality profiler, I learned to look for aesthetic sensibility in people with extraverted sensing, but recently I had a client who just wasn't visually sensitive. Then I encountered Rita's Style Keys system. Most people think Rita's style system will tell them what to wear, but actually it reveals something missing from style advice: how your brain processes sensory information. In this episode, I break down the science behind sensory processing differences and how they show up differently depending on where extraverted sensing sits in your cognitive function stack. If you've tried style systems that just don't click, this episode will help you understand why. In this episode, I break down the real difference between these two polishing types and when you should use each. Whether you're a DIYer or a pro detailer, understanding this difference can save you time, deliver better results, and make your polishing process more efficient. Should you buy duplicate wardrobe staple pieces? Most stylists say no, but I'm making the strategic case for why buying multiples of what truly works might be the smartest wardrobe move you're not making. In this episode, I share why the "every piece must be a hero" mentality creates wardrobe bottlenecks, explore the personality factors that influence duplicate-buying decisions, and give you a simple framework for deciding what's worth duplicating in your closet. Plus, I'll tell you about my husband's evolution from Eddie Bauer variety-seeker to his signature "dandruff black" tee uniform during COVID - and why it was brilliant, not boring. If you've ever found the perfect piece and wished you had bought more, this episode is for you. Grab the workbook: The Wardrobe Pyramid and discover what clothes you really need for your lifestyle. There's a more direct way to create the effect you want with your style than strategically planning it. (Spoiler: it involves being yourself.) In this episode, I share how a realtor instantly read my personality type from a simple outfit, and what that taught me about why conventional styling wisdom gets it backwards. We explore how DISC types could dress strategically, but discover a more direct path to the same outcome. One thing I love about the VW world is there's never a dull moment and there's always something new. For example, the Devin this is the first time I've ever seen this car was at a type three rally meet up in front of ISP West that's when I got to meet Reid Kerlin . Reid is the owner of this Devin 295. It's called the Devon 295 because it cost $295 back in the day it was a kit car that was made for multiple different chassis for the ultimate enthusiast that wanted to build their own sports car on this podcast we get into some of the history of the Devin as well as Read's personal history in the VW scene. He's a great guy and this car is even cooler. Like most of us with his life, starting in a Volkswagen that his parents owned and loving the car itself with the pursuit to find something unique. He stumbled across this Devin. It's a very cool car one of the few that has a type three motor in it has a matter fact it's the only one that he knows of the registry is keeping track of some of these, but Bill Devin, who started the company in 1954 wasn't very good at keep records. You could even buy stuff from him up until not long before his passing a true innovator always looking to help the sports car enthusiast DIYer.   https://www.letstalkdubs.com/blog/ep-310-the-devon-w-read-kerlin https://www.devinsportscarsllc.com/history Reads IG account Follow here www.letstalkdubs.com www.vwtrends.com www.rosswulf.com ICON Pistons avaialble here
