What began in 2017 as a simple call for young swimmers to share what they had has grown into one of Saint Lucia's most inspiring acts of generosity. The Lightning Aquatics Swim Club, through its annual Walk In My Shoes initiative, continues to equip less fortunate students with the tools they need to succeed in school. This year's drive brought together swimmers and their families who donated new and gently used school supplies, including textbooks passed on by graduates of the Club. The effort reflects the Club's enduring commitment to instilling empathy and social responsibility in its athletes.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs recently hosted a high-level validation workshop to advance the finalization of the National Strategic Plan for Health 2025-2035. The workshop was supported by the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and the World Bank brought together key partners and stakeholders in health development to finalize the health sector roadmap. The NSPH 2025–2035 will serve as a comprehensive, forward-looking framework to guide the delivery of health services over the next decade.
Earlier this month the Community Services Unit within the Ministry of Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment, together with the Anse la Raye Parents in Action Group, marked International Charity Day with a donation and day of service at the Trinity Home for the Elderly. The initiative encompassed grooming, games, shared meals, and companionship, uplifting residents with dignity, joy, and inclusion.
In an effort to bring the message of healthy living to Saint Lucia's youth, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs is targeting schools to sensitize students on the areas of physical activity, nutrition, mental well-being and substance use prevention. Students from the Vieux-Fort Comprehensive Secondary School benefitted from this initiative which was held under the banner of the Saint Lucia Moves campaign and entailed a health expo and outdoor sporting challenges. Students were encouraged to take charge of their health.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs recently held a walk in observance of Caribbean Wellness Day, aimed at promoting regular physical activity to fight non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart Disease and Chronic Respiratory Illness. The walk took place from the George Odlum Stadium to the Sandy Beach in Vieux-Fort. The Ministry of Health also collaborated with Saint Lucia Wake Up and Run, Taiwan ICDF Chronic Metabolic Disease Project and other agencies such as Forest Springs.
Food Programme, the Ministry of Equity has introduced a new Anticipatory Action approach, acting early, before a storm hits, to help vulnerable families prepare and stay safe. Recently, a national simulation was carried out to test how quickly support can reach those most in need.
This year, Caribbean Wellness Day is being observed on Saturday September 13th, under the theme, "Engage, Empower, Elevate” and the subtheme "Working together to improve health and well-being for all.” This theme was developed to underscore the necessity for collaboration and inter-sectoral approaches in helping to reduce the incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and improve the management of these diseases in our region. In Saint Lucia, NCDs such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases, continue to contribute to at least 80% of the total deaths every year. The direct and indirect demands and costs associated with these diseases and their risk factors pose a significant burden on the health care systems. This Caribbean Wellness Day 2025, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs calls on other government agencies such as Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Commerce, non-governmental agencies including restaurant owners and school canteens, communities, families and individuals to join this shared commitment to healthier living and reducing the burden of NCDs in Saint Lucia.
Health professionals from the Health Management Information Unit (HMIU), Epidemiology Unit and Environmental Health Unit within the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs received training in data entry and visualization and effective use of the District Health Information Software (DHIS2) platform. This training will play a great part in strengthening Saint Lucia's health information systems. It is expected that the technical competencies of participants will be improved which will contribute to the enhancement of the Ministry's ability to generate, analyze, and apply data to guide evidence-based decision-making.

The Delcer Wellness Centre recently reopened its doors to clients and residents in the community after the successful completion of SMART rehabilitation under the OECS Regional Health Project. The Wellness Centre is now more resilient to managing public health emergencies and disasters. The rehabilitation of the Delcer Wellness Centre was carried out at a cost of over EC$843,000.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), recently hosted a capacity-building training workshop on the Clinical Management of Rape and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) under the Build Back Equal project, funded by Global Affairs Canada. Front line clinical staff benefitted from the training building their skills and ability to provide comprehensive care for survivors of rape and other forms of gender-based violence, as well as managing sexually transmitted infections. The Ministry of Health also received essential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) commodities such as models for breast examination, female pelvic models, etc. from UNFPA. The supplies were funded by the Build Back Equal Project and Global Affairs Canada.
