As students across Saint Lucia commenced the 2026 Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment examinations today, Minister for Education, Kenson Casimir, visited schools within Districts One, Two and Three to encourage students and offer support to educators and parents ahead of the start of the annual examinations. Efforts to strengthen economic resilience, improve social protection systems, and expand opportunities for women and vulnerable groups in Saint Lucia are receiving renewed momentum through the Build Back Equal Project, a multi-sector initiative aimed at advancing gender equality, reducing poverty risks, and strengthening institutional support mechanisms across the island. The project continues to support legislative reform, policy development, gender-based violence prevention and response, and the expansion of economic opportunities for women through improved technical capacity and market access. These priorities were reinforced during a recent National Project Steering Committee Meeting, which brought together representatives from government agencies, civil society organizations, and development partners to review implementation progress and strengthen collaboration as the project enters its final phase.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Nutrition is closely monitoring reports of a cluster of hantavirus cases linked to the cruise vessel, the MV Hondius, which departed Argentina on April 1, 2026, carrying passengers and crew from 28 countries. At present, Saint Lucia is considered to be at low risk for the hantavirus transmission. Individuals traveling to areas with ongoing transmission are advised to avoid rodent-infested areas where possible. When cleaning areas contaminated by rodents, individuals should use appropriate protective measures, including face masks, gloves, and disinfectants, to reduce the risk of exposure to airborne particles that may carry the virus. At this time, there are no suspected or confirmed cases of hantavirus in Saint Lucia. The Ministry of Health will continue to monitor the developments related to this outbreak and provide updates to the public.

Following the recent launch of the Reproductive Education and Adolescent Community Health (REACH) Project at the Coco Palm Resort in Rodney Bay, sexual and reproductive health services for adolescents' in Saint Lucia are expected to be improved. The REACH project is aimed at building supportive community conditions where adolescents will be knowledgeable and feel confident in accessing the health services and advocating for their own health. The REACH Project is funded by Global Affairs Canada, and implemented by Alinea International in collaboration with Caribbean Technical Assistance & Education Centre for Health (C-TECH) and the Organisation of the Eastern Caribbean States Commission (OECS).
