Faurés mature style explores the chromatic depths of counterpoint while retaining a radiant surface, and his 6th Nocturne in D flat major, Op. 63, is a great example that holds together three disparate ideas beautifully. This video is on the advanced side of analysis on the channel, e.g. some concepts are used freely in order to get more complex points through. If you don't know them this should still give some good context for getting acquainted with them (things like cadence, sequence, appoggiatura etc.) The piece was a Patreon request by S. Lam. DescriptionOne of my favorite pieces of all time is Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 1 in D-flat Major. This episode is dedicated to this breathtaking composition. Take a minute to get the scoop!Listen to Juan P. Floristán play Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 1 in D-flat Major ℅ YouTube—Juan will also be a guest of mine coming soon!!!Fun FactOne day during the summer of 1911, Sergei Taneyev, the revered composer, asked the young Prokofiev a question that undoubtedly puzzled many musicians of his generation: “Where, Sergei Sergeyevich, do you think your predilection for dissonances comes from?” Prokofiev responded: “Well, you know, Sergei Ivanovich, when I was eleven years old and I brought you my first symphony [an unpublished student work], you listened to it and said with a smile, ‘Very good, very good; except the harmony is painfully primitive…' Those words burned themselves into my brain, I became ashamed of my primitive harmony, and tried in every possible way to make it more interesting. This ambition has never left me, and as my musical powers developed I was always aiming at ever more complex harmony […]” Laughing, Taneyev replied, “Well, imagine that! I never knew it was I who had set you off on that path…!”About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer living in Toronto. In the middle of the set of 24 preludes in all different keys Op. 11, Scriabin limits himself to use only the diatonic notes of D-flat major in slowly moving melodic lines harmonized in thirds. Needless to say it's a great exercise for legato playing in the left hand, which has to play the thirds before the right hand enters with a soaring but tragic melody.

It’s not clear Chopin actually had raindrops in mind when he wrote this. The German pianist Hans von Bülow gave it the name “Raindrop Prelude,” not Chopin himself. Nevertheless, to this day, the popular recital piece is still compared to the sound of soft, drizzling rain. This piece was the first classical work that I fell in love with. In fact, this was the gateway that led to my love for the piano and my endeavor to study and practice. I heard it as "background" music for a popular Japanese film (I believe it was titles "Dreams") back in high school. Upon hearing the music, I went home and rummaged through my mother's sheet music collection until I found a copy of this piece. I played it over and over until I had committed it to memory. Although this was not the "tipping point" for me and the piano, it was definitely a key point in my love for classical music.
This recording was made several years ago. I really need to re-record this piece because I have since gained a much deeper appreciation for the piece and I feel as though my interpretation of it has greatly improved. I also now conclude this piece with Listz's alternate ending which concludes in a whole-tone scale with the left hand and accompanying chords in the right. I prefer this ending over the original because I have a particular affinity towards the whole-tone scale... it reminds me of the eternal nature of life and my deep faith in religion and a Heavenly Father (God) who loves us.
