Auschwitz et littérature à l'eau de rose font-ils bon ménage ? La Shoah est au cœur d'énormément d'écritures littéraires, du témoignage au livre d'histoire jusqu'à la fiction historique. Mais aujourd'hui, elle est aussi l'objet de livres très populaires, des best sellers comme La sage-femme d'Auschwitz, le Tatoueur d'Auschwitz, la Berceuse d'Auschwitz, L'Orpheline d'Auschwitz, La bibliothécaire d'Auschwitz... On dirait qu'on assiste à l'émergence d'un sous-genre de la littérature mélodramatique qui utiliserait la Shoah comme un moyen efficace pour émouvoir le lecteur à peu de frais. C'est le cas du Tatoueur d'Auschwitz, l'histoire vraie de Lale Sokolov et de son histoire d'amour avec Gita, romancée par Heather Morris, et publiée onze ans après la mort de Lale. Pour nous accompagner dans notre lecture, Torchon a fait appel à Alexandre Bande, enseignant, historien, spécialiste de la Shoah et l'auteur, notamment, de l'ouvrage d'histoire Auschwitz 1945, paru cette année aux éditions Passés composés. L'occasion de démêler le vrai du faux, et surtout de poser toute une réflexion éthique et critique sur la représentation de la Shoah dans les productions artistiques pour le grand public. Juliana Soltis is an innovative cellist who has done extensive research to connect listeners with some forgotten stories of classical music. In this episode we talked about her recent album American Woman which features cello and piano music of women composers; you'll hear Juliana's insights into the lives of Mary Howe, Amy Beach, Margaret Bonds, Helen Crane, Dorothy Rudd Moore and Florence Price and hear excerpts from this album which Juliana recorded with the wonderful pianist Ruoting Li. Many listeners will be familiar with Juliana's playing as a Baroque cellist, and it was fascinating to hear about how the French relinquished their beloved viol relunctuantly to the Italian cello. I really love Juliana's recording of the complete Suites for solo cello of J.S. Bach and you'll hear some music from her album Going off Script: the Ornamented Suites for cello. Juliana shared great advice about performing from an athlete's perspective and also the joy of connecting with audiences. Born in post-war Vietnam, Nguyen's path has been shaped by her family legacy, global influences, and dedication to her craft. From her early beginnings at the Hanoi Conservatory to her studies in Moscow, Paris, and the United States, Nguyen's story exemplifies perseverance and the power of music to transcend boundaries. The interview examines Nguyen's direct connections with French composer Olivier Messiaen and studying with his wife Yvonne Loriod, her respect for Germaine Tailleferre's resilience, and her collaboration with Paul Chihara on his Concerto Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra. Nguyen also explores music's capability to promote peace between nations in her touching final remarks.   Quynh Nguyen has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Vietnam, in venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Smithsonian's Freer Gallery, Berlin Konzerthause, and the Opera House in Hanoi, Vietnam. Broadcast appearances include Voice of America, WQXR, WGBH, NHK Television in Japan, Vietnamese national television, and “Grand Piano,” on cable TV channels across the United States. Mélanie Bonis (1858–1937), a fine pianist herself, composed some 150 works for solo piano, publishing them with her first name shortened to ‘Mel' to disguise the fact that she was a woman – while she lived among the French haute bourgeoisie as Mme Domange. They sometimes show the influence of Chabrier and have points of contact with the music of Chausson, Debussy, and Pierné, who had been fellow students at the Paris Conservatoire. "I wanted to honor Anton Pickard's beautiful field recording "Awenda Waves" in its wholeness, so the idea of playing a lullaby by the water emerged early on.  As a counterpoint to his sound I used my own recording of a 432Hz A drone (played as harmonic on the D-string on a double bass and slightly tuned down from 440Hz) that is sustained throughout the entire composition. Additionally, there are five separate voices (a synthetic bass, low strings, and a few other synthesizer sounds) that divide the piece into seven separate sections that are each roughly two minutes in length.  "The work is arranged in a quasi mirror-like fashion, culminating at the centre (around 8 min. 20 sec.), after which point the voices and their melodies return opposite of the way they entered the composition. This symmetry device was used to enhance balance and instil calmness." "For this project, I left the field recording largely intact because the pulse of the crashing waves already felt like being rocked to sleep. Listening to it felt like breathing. I wanted to create music that reflected this peaceful feeling of being lulled to sleep. I think low frequencies can be relaxing so I employed a rocking motion that reflected the pulse of the waves in the bass, but kept it very soft. I used electric guitar to add a dreamy quality that would induce a relaxed state to get ready for sleep." SynopsisWhen a flying saucer circled over Washington, DC, in the classic 1951 sci-fi film, “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” it did so to music played on an electronic instrument known as the Theremin.Its Russian inventor, Leon Theremin, was born in St. Petersburg on today's date in 1896. In 1927 Theremin traveled to America, where he obtained a patent for an electronic instrument he called the Thereminovox. In the 1930s, Theremin arranged concerts for his creation at New York's Carnegie Hall.Then, in 1938, without explanation, Theremin disappeared. Some said it was because he was in debt, others because he was married to two women at the same time. The truth was even stranger: Theremin was a spy.He had been passing on American technical information to the Soviets. Ironically, when he returned home, Theremin was immediately thrown into a Soviet prison for seven years.
