Sarah Devonald chooses her favourite recording of Schubert Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, D. 485. When he wrote his fifth symphony at the age of 19, Schubert was working unhappily as an assistant teacher in his father's school. But he was nevertheless on a compositional roll with songs, chamber music and four other symphonies to his name, all of which were performed by amateur and professional musicians made up from family and friends. This genial, small-scale group gave the 1816 premiere of the symphony in the home of Otto Hatwig, violinist in Vienna's Burgtheater orchestra. And the jolly music seems to echo that cheerful ensemble, Schubert picking up from the classical models of 25 years earlier, seemingly oblivious to Beethoven's decade-plus of ground-breaking musical developments that were soon to become so influential.
From 1825-1827, Mendelssohn wrote 3 of his most beloved and most played works: his Midsummer Night's Dream Overture, his String Quartet, Op. 13, and the piece were going to talk about today, his Octet. What is truly astonishing about these three pieces is that they were all written before Mendelssohn turned 18 years old. Mendelssohn was the greatest prodigy in the history of Western Classical Music, writing music so spectacular at such a young age that it almost overshadows his later, more mature, works. In my opinion, the greatest of these three towering early pieces from Mendelssohn is his octet. It is a piece of structural perfection, ingenuity, innovation, and most of all, it is a piece of such youthful enthusiasm that it is impossible to not put a smile on your face. We'll talk all about this piece today, from its soaring first movement, to its contemplative second movement, the brilliant third movement, and the bubbling last movement. Let's discuss this miracle of a piece together - join us!

2022 marks the bicentenary of César Franck, undoubtedly one of the most prolific composers in 19th century France. Of German ancestry, born in Liège, Belgium, he made his career in Paris. He left a substantial oeuvre of orchestral, choral and chamber music as well as pieces for piano and organ. He was one of the first musicians to take up the harmonic developments of Richard Wagner, and transformed them into his own unique musical language which in turn shaped the further development of French music. Among his most beautiful and poetic works are two sets of pieces written for the organ: Trois piéces and Trois chorals. The first set was written for the inauguration of the organ in the Palais du Trocadéro, built for the Exposition Universelle (or World's Fair) of 1878. The second was composed over the course of two months in the summer of 1890; Franck died in November of the same year, and the works were published posthumously in 1891. Faurés mature style explores the chromatic depths of counterpoint while retaining a radiant surface, and his 6th Nocturne in D flat major, Op. 63, is a great example that holds together three disparate ideas beautifully. This video is on the advanced side of analysis on the channel, e.g. some concepts are used freely in order to get more complex points through. If you don't know them this should still give some good context for getting acquainted with them (things like cadence, sequence, appoggiatura etc.) The piece was a Patreon request by S. Lam. We'll look at Beethoven's great "Eroica" Symphony, No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 55.
Allyson Devenish chooses her favourite recording of Schubert's Piano Trio No 1 in B flat, D.898 Schubert began composing this masterpiece in 1827, the year before his death, at the same time as working on his famous song cycle Die Winterreise. It was a period in his life of illness and melancholy. But this work is brimming with lyricism and life force. Robert Schumann said of it: “One glance at Schubert's Trio in Bb and the troubles of our human existence disappear and all the world is fresh and bright again.” The work has attracted all the great performers of chamber music, from Alfred Cortot, Jacques Thibaud and Pablo Casals to the Beaux Arts Trio to the best musicians of today.
"The psychological effect of all this key-shifting, some jerky, some smooth, is very difficult to describe...perhaps it is the magic of Bach that he can write pieces with this kind of structure which have such a natural grace to them that we are not aware of exactly what is happening." In this episode we use these words by author Douglas Hofstadter to explore Bach's harmony as a deep stack of entangled and recursive structures. A moment from listener Santiago is the smallest of these stacked units, and we use it to zoom out. The Congress of Vienna 1814 at the end of the long Napoleonic Wars led to a period of relative peace on the continent of Europe. A network of institutions was established known as the ‘Concert of Europe' where differences could be thrashed out before leading to war. After the French Revolution, the basis of sovereignty shifted from individuals and families as leaders to nations and states. Throughout Europe a generation of individuals from the educated elite took the lead in developing movements of national liberation and liberal reform. But for more than thirty years the leaders of the Great Powers of the continent successfully managed to suppress these movements and clamped down on any signs of internal unrest or revolutionwww.patreon.com/historyeuropewww.historyeurope.netMusic: Frederich Chopin - Polonaise in A Flat Major; Franz Schubert's Symphony no.5Picture: Congress of Vienna watercolour etching by August Friedrich Andreas See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
