For the last ten years, Pop Recs Ltd – initially a publicity stunt, then a record shop, then a venue, now so much more - has been at the heart of the music community in Sunderland, the place that I, for a time, called my home. Founded by Frankie & The Heartstrings duo Michael McKnight and the late Dave Harper, now aided and abetted by my old friend and punk pizza supremo Dan Shannon, Pop Recs is on its third incarnation, now being based at the bottom end of Sunderland's High Street West. If you're in town, make sure you swing by for a coffee and a bop, won't you? Pop Recs celebrated this decade of struggle and triumph last Saturday with two instore performances by local heroes The Futureheads, and while I couldn't attend, it's heartening to see that the culture within a city I care about greatly continues to thrive thanks to the DIY spirit that's produced so much great music this last twenty plus years. What follows is a feel-good conversation about the past, the future, the forever missed Dave Harper, and a bit of inside baseball lols that might only make sense if you were part of the Sunderland indie rock scene circa the turn of the millennium. Happy birthday Pop Recs! Here's to many more happy returns! Do you remember where you were the first time the message of God's love really came alive to you? Do you remember the last time you shared your faith? Perhaps it was in a recent conversation with a good friend just needing the encouragement to keep going. Or maybe it was a colleague or a neighbor you know who you just feel drawn to be a light in their life and point them to Jesus. While sharing our faith isn't always at the forefront of our minds daily, I do know how incredibly impactful it can be. And I love hearing when other passionate followers of Jesus are empowering others and discipling followers of Jesus to do the same. On today's show I have a special guest doing just this with Youth With a Mission, otherwise known as YWAM. Their ministry is all about equipping a generation with a passion to know God and make Him known and they do this through a number of ways in small groups, one on one, locally and internationally. Dan Shannon dives into just a BIT of what his journey with YWAM has been like over the last 20 years. Starting what feels like a lifetime ago in the early 2000s, Dan has traveled globally with YWAM and continues to serve on staff out of their KONA HAWAII Base. Dan and his lovely wife Meehan have been living their dream adventures of raising 3 kids in Hawaii and showing up to life daily with the excitement for “what God has for them and how can they include him into every faucet of who they are! (A challenge for all of us to live this way!) Well, I'm excited for the stories and conversation we're going to get into today, so why dont you pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee and dive in with us to the places between. I was pretty inspired when I spoke with Dan Shannon about Betty Goes Vegan, the book he and his wife Annie created. So when Amy's Table producer (and popular blogger) Joe Bellante requested vegan cupcakes I went right to Betty and decided to make him Pina Colada Cupcakes. Honestly, while I'm interested in expanding my vegetarian and vegan recipe options, I think I'll stick to my butter, egg and milk style of baking. But if you've chosen to follow a vegan diet, these will certainly do the trick!
Annie and Dan Shannon turn the Betty Crocker Cookbook on it's ear as they create vegan versions of your family favorites in Betty Goes Vegan
Dan Shannon has worked within Recruitment for nearly 15 years! From working for a small 4 man band agency to working for the global agency Harvey Nash. It's safe to say Dan has learnt a lot along the way and we discuss a whole host of topics in this episode. The key parts that stood out for me in this conversation are the following. - If you really get to know the people in your team you will understand how to motivate them in the right way. - The power of having a company brand. - The importance of setting goals. - Learning how to ride the 'Rollercoaster'! I loved Dan's mindset and I'm excited for you all to listen to this episode. You can connect with Dan on Linkedin - https://www.linkedin.com/in/dan-shannon-b588785/ (Dan Shannon)
Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: www.elevatorbooks.com MACKLOWE’S TOWERING AMBITION: NYC’S TALLEST BY ROOF HEIGHT The New York Times got the scoop on what would be New York City's (NYC) tallest building by roof height at 1,556 ft. and 96 floors, New York YIMBY reports. Being developed by Harry Macklowe, the man behind 432 Park Avenue Tower Fifth along East 51st and 52nd streets in Midtown East features a design by Gensler, Adamson Associates and Dan Shannon of Moed de Armas & Shannon Architects blending several contemporary styles and boasting what would be the city's highest observation deck, a multifloor affair. Renderings unveiled by the Times show a diagrid of crossbeams at the top and an overall bulk similar to 432 Park Avenue, with cutouts for mechanicals and a skinny profile. A lobby clad in white marble looks directly onto St. Patrick's Cathedral. The development must win "several layers" of City Planning Department approvals before it become reality.
