“I found writing almost an unbelievably incredible way to deal with the grief. It was a way to channel my energy in a really productive way that ultimately led to this book that I've written. And it was therapeutic. It was really helpful for me in many ways." — Glenn Hilemann In this deeply moving episode of "Uncorking a Story," we explore the poignant journey of Glenn Hilemann, who turned a heart-wrenching tragedy into a legacy of love and storytelling. Following the devastating loss of his parents in the East Troublesome fire of 2020, Glenn embarked on a path he never anticipated—writing a memoir that captures the essence of his parents' lives, their love, and the indelible mark they left on him. Through our conversation, Glenn shares how writing became an unexpected sanctuary of grief processing, a medium for preserving cherished memories, and a bridge to understanding his parents' lives more profoundly than ever before. This episode is not just a story about loss; it's a testament to the power of storytelling to heal, connect, and immortalize our most treasured connections. Meet Glenn Hileman Glenn Hileman is the CEO of Highmark School Development and has spent over fifteen years living in Bountiful, Utah. His love of Grand Lake, Colorado led to him purchasing his parent's home in 2020. His family is actively working to restore the property from the devastation of the East Troublesome Fire and, in doing so, they hope to honor the legacy of his parents. He joined me on Uncorking a Story to talk about his memoir, "A Yellow House in the Mountains.” Key Themes: The Catalyst of Writing: Glenn Hilemann's journey as an author began in the wake of a devastating fire that claimed his parents' home and lives. The tragedy opened a path for him to write, capturing memories and stories of his parents to honor their legacy. Writing as Therapy: Glenn discovered writing as a powerful medium for processing grief. The act of capturing his parents' stories not only preserved their memory but also provided him a therapeutic outlet. The Power of Shared Stories: Throughout the process, Glenn learned more about his parents' lives through stories shared by relatives. This not only deepened his understanding of his parents but also the bonds within his family. Creative Inspiration: Glenn's creative journey was sparked unexpectedly through music, leading him to write a song that encapsulated his parents' lives, demonstrating the unforeseen ways creativity can emerge. The Challenge of Publication: Transitioning from manuscript to published book involved learning the intricacies of editing, design, and publication, highlighting the dedication required to bring a story to readers. The Importance of Legacy: Beyond personal healing, Glenn's work stands as a testament to his parents' lives, offering insights and inspiration to others through the universal themes of love, loss, and resilience. Future Endeavors: Glenn is contemplating a follow-up book focused on the recovery and restoration process post-fire, aiming to share lessons learned and the continued impact of his parents' legacy. I could hear those motorcycles coming my direction. They had to be going fast! Echoing down through the canyon on that steep dirt road. There's no guard rails up there! Slide off the road and you're a goner. Coming my way. Coming really fast! Those engines screaming. Two KTM's roared up and parked near my bike, right next to the outdoor table where I was having breakfast up there in that mountain village. 2 matching KTM 500 Enduros. The riders, also in matching KTM off-road racing gear. Klim adventure helmets as I recall, neck braces, KTM jerseys, enduro pants and boots. Oh yes, these two were pros. They knew how to ride. And the shock that ran threw me when they pulled their helmets off….? Wow, you've got to be kidding me!!! Ha ha, I'll tell ya about it.
We've just got to slow down sometimes, now more than ever. No, I'm not warning against riding fast, I'm referring to the speeds that our brains and emotions are built for. With 24*7 news cycle, constant social media updates, work stress. Now we've got Artificial Intelligence creating more and more content out there to absorb, like Youtube videos that are clearly not narrated by humans, and much of the content is either inaccurate or at best misleading I think. We can't keep going at that pace and keep our sanity anyway. Fast all the time is not good for us. I firmly believe that. We're not made for that. So when we're on our bikes, just pick a place sometimes and stop. Turn off the bike. Be quiet. Look around. That's hard, but I'm convinced that it's worth it. Let's talk about it. Thank you for joining me today!
What music do you hear in your head when you ride? The Doobie Brothers? Pearl Jam? John Denver? The Mormon Tabernacle Choir? For me, it's any one of those music styles, playing over and over in my head as I ride, but for yesterday's ride, about a 300 miler, the song in my head changed multiple times. I didn't have a plan for this ride, but I felt compelled to ride for a few hours, out into the open spaces. Yesterday, I needed the road time. Maybe to un-clutter my head. And guess what? It worked.

Welcome to The Woman Angler & Adventurer, where we celebrate women in fishing and outdoor adventure. In this episode, we have an exciting announcement to share with you, so stay tuned! But first, let's talk about our guest, Travis Burch. Travis is a passionate angler with a vision for the future of women's bass fishing. He believes in providing opportunities for women to compete and continue fishing beyond high school. Travis is joining hands with our team to head up the Lady Bass Anglers Association (LBAA). During our conversation, Travis shares his background in bass fishing and his involvement in youth and adult fishing tournaments. He discusses his goals of improving the industry and increasing prize pools to attract even more talented anglers. Travis is dedicated to making a positive impact in the world of women's fishing. Regarding LBAA's plans for the future, we discuss their tournament schedule for 2024. The LBAA will be stopping at iconic lakes such as Toledo Bend in Texas, Guntersville Lake in Alabama, and the championship taking place at Grand Lake in Oklahoma. Travis shares exciting details about these locations and the fantastic opportunities they offer for anglers. Additionally, Travis emphasizes the importance of brand awareness and growing LBAA's presence on social media. They are also in talks with sponsors and have already welcomed Bait-WrX and Wholesale Batteries as new partners. With a focus on creating a supportive and friendly atmosphere, LBAA is open to anglers of all skill levels 16 and older. Now, onto our big announcement for The Woman Angler & Adventurer podcast. We are transitioning to a seasonal format. This means that instead of weekly episodes, we will release new content in seasons, allowing us to deliver even more engaging and valuable episodes to our listeners.
