Send us Fan MailOne muddy river can humble you fast, especially when you haven't fished in nearly a decade and you decide to jump straight into Nova Scotia striped bass season. We record this one remotely on location after a long day on the Stewiacke River, trading clean studio audio for real river energy, late-night laughs, and the kind of fishing story that only happens when the weather is cold, the tide is moving, and the fish are there.Chris Globe, a lifelong striper guy from Millbrook First Nation, breaks down why the Stewiacke and Shubenacadie River system is so special, how the fish move between Grand Lake and the Bay of Fundy, and what's actually going on during the spring spawn. We talk through the bait closure regulations, single-hook artificial lure rules, and why this window can produce incredible action while still demanding extra care from anglers. If you've ever wondered how a river can look like chocolate milk and still hold picky fish, you'll get plenty of real-world answers. Then we get into the good stuff: casting disasters, boots full of water, getting stuck in mud, learning what “bumping fish” means, and the painful truth about the one that got away. We also share practical striped bass fishing tips you can use anywhere, from tide timing and “running and gunning” for schools to lure choices like grub tails and jerkbaits, plus how a net can change your landing and quick-release success. If you care about catch and release best practices, fish handling, and keeping a world-class fishery healthy, this conversation goes there too.If you enjoy the ride, subscribe, share this with a fishing buddy, and leave a review so more hunters and anglers can find the show. Cannabis comic and activist Ngaio Bealum is back on the podcast for our HALLOWEED episode, and he's bringing a pair of horror comedies. First, we've got maybe the ultimate Halloween movie with ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN (1948). This one has all the monsters--Lon Chaney, Jr. as THE WOLF MAN, Bela Lugosi is DRACULA, and Glenn Strange is the FRANKENSTEIN MONSTER. Plus you've got some mad scientist action, and they're all after Lou Costello's brain because he's even dumber than the monster. Thrill to Dracula hurling potted plants at the Wolf Man! There's also a Nor Cal/So Cal schism over Abbott and Costello that was a little unexpected. Find out how that one plays out as Bob and Ngaio tag team the Franklins here. Then, don't call it a comeback as VINCENT PRICE returns to kill a bunch of doctors in inventive and Biblical ways in THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES (1971), a piece of art deco madness from the strange mind of director Robert Fuest (THE DEVIL'S RAIN). Bob's usual smooth intro melted down here as Ngaio accused him of spoiling the movie by basically rehashing the description copy from the back of the Bluray. You'll want to hear the conflict. And FIND OUT HOW YOU can WIN THE DR. PHIBES Bluray(!), and read that spoilery copy for yourself by listening to this episode! And if you email us at oldmoviesforyoungstoners@gmail.com and tell Bob how this episode is a STEALTH VINCENT PRICE DOUBLE FEATURE, you'll jump ahead in line! We will reward the people who actually read all this crap. Shhhh. And the episode kicks off with a usual amount of discussion or SUPERMAN vs. POPEYE + seeing the Tim Burton BATMAN at the Grand Lake in Oakland. Ngaio is old school when it comes to DC Comics canon BTW. Follow Ngaio at Ngaio420 on Instagram and other socials: https://www.instagram.com/ngaio420/ Hosts: Philena Franklin, Bob Calhoun, and Greg Franklin. Cory Sklar is on assignment. Send us a textMeet Oakley Olson, a rising star in the trail running world who's breaking barriers between collegiate track and mountain racing. Fresh from her NCAA steeplechase season and now a Trail Team Elite selection for 2025, Oakley joins us just days before tackling both the Vertical Kilometer and 23K races at Broken Arrow Skyrace.Oakley's story is remarkable – from showing up at her first trail camp in worn-out road shoes to finishing top-10 at the US Mountain Running Championships within months. Speaking from the Trail Team camp in Grand Lake, Colorado, she shares how this supportive community transformed her understanding of the sport. "I had no idea what Broken Arrow was, what a running vest was, or what trail running shoes were," she laughs, describing her bloody-legged introduction to mountain terrain just a year ago. When the conversation turns to race strategy, Oakley reveals a mature approach beyond her experience level. Drawing from her NCAA racing background, she plans to start conservatively at Broken Arrow rather than getting caught in the frantic early pace. "I'd rather be the hunter than the hunted," she explains, a strategy that served her well at Snowbird last year against seasoned professionals. Most powerful is Oakley's motivation – she runs for her two younger brothers who have Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Wearing a lime green ribbon on her shoes, she pushes through difficult moments by remembering their daily struggles. "When it got so hard, the only thing that got me through was thinking about my two younger brothers and how that's how they feel every day walking up a staircase," she shares with heartfelt emotion. Her family will be waiting at the aid station atop the Vertical Kilometer, making a potential Team USA qualification even more meaningful.Listen now to this inspiring conversation with an athlete whose genuine passion, strategic intelligence, and heartfelt motivation are quickly making her one of trail running's most compelling figures. The future of American mountain running looks brighter with Oakley Olsen on the scene.Follow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

“I found writing almost an unbelievably incredible way to deal with the grief. It was a way to channel my energy in a really productive way that ultimately led to this book that I've written. And it was therapeutic. It was really helpful for me in many ways." — Glenn Hilemann In this deeply moving episode of "Uncorking a Story," we explore the poignant journey of Glenn Hilemann, who turned a heart-wrenching tragedy into a legacy of love and storytelling. Following the devastating loss of his parents in the East Troublesome fire of 2020, Glenn embarked on a path he never anticipated—writing a memoir that captures the essence of his parents' lives, their love, and the indelible mark they left on him. Through our conversation, Glenn shares how writing became an unexpected sanctuary of grief processing, a medium for preserving cherished memories, and a bridge to understanding his parents' lives more profoundly than ever before. This episode is not just a story about loss; it's a testament to the power of storytelling to heal, connect, and immortalize our most treasured connections. Meet Glenn Hileman Glenn Hileman is the CEO of Highmark School Development and has spent over fifteen years living in Bountiful, Utah. His love of Grand Lake, Colorado led to him purchasing his parent's home in 2020. His family is actively working to restore the property from the devastation of the East Troublesome Fire and, in doing so, they hope to honor the legacy of his parents. He joined me on Uncorking a Story to talk about his memoir, "A Yellow House in the Mountains.” Key Themes: The Catalyst of Writing: Glenn Hilemann's journey as an author began in the wake of a devastating fire that claimed his parents' home and lives. The tragedy opened a path for him to write, capturing memories and stories of his parents to honor their legacy. Writing as Therapy: Glenn discovered writing as a powerful medium for processing grief. The act of capturing his parents' stories not only preserved their memory but also provided him a therapeutic outlet. The Power of Shared Stories: Throughout the process, Glenn learned more about his parents' lives through stories shared by relatives. This not only deepened his understanding of his parents but also the bonds within his family. Creative Inspiration: Glenn's creative journey was sparked unexpectedly through music, leading him to write a song that encapsulated his parents' lives, demonstrating the unforeseen ways creativity can emerge. The Challenge of Publication: Transitioning from manuscript to published book involved learning the intricacies of editing, design, and publication, highlighting the dedication required to bring a story to readers. The Importance of Legacy: Beyond personal healing, Glenn's work stands as a testament to his parents' lives, offering insights and inspiration to others through the universal themes of love, loss, and resilience. Future Endeavors: Glenn is contemplating a follow-up book focused on the recovery and restoration process post-fire, aiming to share lessons learned and the continued impact of his parents' legacy.
