Timestamps (2:00) - Tracey Nix Updates (10:36) - Daniel Morcombe In December 2003, Australian teen Daniel Morcombe (13) had saved up some money and decided to take the bus to a shopping center to buy Christmas gifts for his family. Daniel walked to a nearby bus stop. He attempted to flag down a bus, but the driver was unable to stop due to mechanical issues with the vehicle. A second bus followed behind very shortly. Daniel was no longer at the bus stop and was never seen alive again. The investigation into Daniel's disappearance was one of the largest ever seen in Australia. At one stage, there was a reward of $1m offered in the case. In 2011, a sex offender named Brett Peter Cowan was arrested and charged with Daniel's murder. Cowan had offered Daniel a lift to the shopping centre after the bus failed to stop. Cowan murdered Daniel within an hour of his abduction. Daniel Morcombe was 13 years old when he vanished from a bus stop in Queensland, Australia, never to be seen again. The ramifications of this crime would be felt around Australia for decades to come. A large-scale investigation was launched almost immediately and quickly led police to several prime suspects, but after years went by with no arrests, it was looking like they may never get the evidence they'd need to solve the case. While so-called “Mr Big” undercover police operations have resulted in convictions in some of Australia's most notorious cases, such as the Daniel Morcombe murder, the admissibility of confessions elicited during such operations and the reliability of those statements may demand further scrutiny. In this episode of The Lawyers Weekly Show, host Jerome Doraisamy speaks with RMIT University College of Business and Law lecturer Dr Lisanne Adam and University of Sydney senior psychology lecturer Dr Celine Van Golde about what defines a “Mr Big” operation, how and why they are used, their recent research into the use and reliability of such operations, and the practical issues that these operations can present. Adam and Van Golde also delve into some of the moral and ethical considerations from such operations, the fact that the High Court allowed for use of such methods in 2007, whether “Mr Big” operations are increasingly being used and why police might look to undertake such operations, the challenges or consequences that arise from these operations, the idea that the legal system may “prey on the vulnerable”, how criminal lawyers feel about the use of “Mr Big”, what legislative or regulatory improvements might be needed, and ensuring societal faith in our system. When a 13-year-old boy, out shopping for Christmas presents, disappeared from a bus stop in Australia's Sunshine Coast, police were initially slow to suspect foul play. They had no idea what this investigation would become. The revelations that would come over the next decade would spark one of the country's largest ever police operations. And in its dramatic climax, it ended in one of the most controversial investigative techniques we've ever covered – the very ethically murky “Mr Big”.Exclusive bonus content:Wondery - Ad-free & ShortHandPatreon - Ad-free & Bonus EpisodesFollow us on social media:YouTubeTikTokInstagramXVisit our website:WebsiteSources available on redhandedpodcast.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This turned into one of the biggest investigations in Queensland's history. https://danielmorcombe.com.au/day-for-daniel/Further Resources ⬇️ https://www.childhelp.org/educator-resources/child-abuse-education-prevention-resources/https://danielmorcombe.com.auhttps://www.stopitnow.org/ohc-content/resources-for-parents-of-children-who-have-been-sexually-abusedhttps://www.nspcc.org.uk/what-is-child-abuse/types-of-abuse/child-sexual-abuse/https://www.childwelfare.gov/organizations/?CWIGFunctionsaction=rols:main.dspList&rolType=Custom&RS_ID=77https://napac.org.ukhttps://www.supportline.org.uk/problems/child-abuse-survivors/https://www.enoughabuse.org/get-help/survivors.htmlhttps://www.childline.org.uk/toolbox/videos/sexual-abuse-how-we-can-help/https://www.parentsprotect.co.uk/useful-links.htmSupport the showhttps://linktr.ee/trulycriminal1Patreon

The parents of Queensland boy Daniel Morcombe have labelled a new movie depicting the hunt for their child's murderer "callously disrespectful" after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Daniel was 13 years old in December 2003 when he was snatched from a bus stop on the Sunshine Coast and murdered. His killer, Bunbury-born convicted pedophile Brett Peter Cowan, was caught after an extensive eight-year investigation. Bruce Morcombe told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings they were calling for a boycott of the new Australian film The Stranger about his son, saying it is "making money off a heinous crime". "The family were blindsided by the making of this movie," he told Bartlett on Friday. "We just feel it was a low blow and uncalled for ... it appears to be glorifying an horrific crime."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On December 8 2003 Queensland's Sunshine Coast woke to the news that a boy was missing. About to turn 14 – Daniel Morcombe had left home on Sunday morning to go Christmas shopping, his twin brother Bradley, not keen on the shops, had left him at the bus stop. Daniel had not been seen since. Before long, everyone in Australia was looking for Daniel… but his family knew in their hearts Daniel was gone. Ten long years later Brett Peter Cowan was charged with Daniel's murder and ultimately sentenced to life in prison. When Daniel's body was found, even though it was the worst outcome imaginable, the Morcombes began to heal. But how did Bruce and Denise stayed married, through those darkest days, how did they keep their marriage together?
Daniel Morcombe simply wanted to visit a shopping centre to buy Christmas presents. Sadly, the people who caught a glimpse of Daniel at the bus stop were the last people to see the 13 year old alive. Queensland undertook it's largest ever investigation into a missing person that spanned across several years. The outcome was tragic. What happened to Daniel?
Daniel Morcombe, a 13-year-old boy with bright blue eyes and dark brown hair, stands at a bus stop beneath an overpass. Today, he is wearing a bright red t-shirt. It's Sunday, the 7th of December 2003, at 2:10pm. He's waiting for a bus to take him to the Sunshine Plaza Shopping Centre so he can get a haircut and buy some Christmas presents. At home, are his parents, Denise and Bruce Morcombe, his identical twin brother Bradley, and his older brother, Dean. A bus passes but doesn't stop. On it, is a 13-year-old girl who notices the boy on the side of the road. There's a gaunt man standing behind him. Another girl on the bus, who is 17 years old, also notices the pair. She will remember the man with him as having long hair, a goatee and sunglasses, with a sports bag by his side. The bus driver motions to the boy that there is another bus coming. But by the time the bus gets there, the boy in the red shirt is gone. In the years afterwards, police would identify and befriend the paedophile they believed targeted Daniel that day. It would become one of the most remarkable police stings in Australian history, providing chilling insight into one of our country's most evil killers. Days 8-10: As Cleo’s disappearance stretches past a week, police and forensics search around the Smith family house. But they have one message - Ellie and Jake are not suspects. We’ve seen police make these searches in other missing persons cases - including William Tyrrell, Daniel Morcombe and in the Claremont Serial Killings, and as this episode’s guest Criminologist Dr Xanthé Mallett explains, police always examine the family and those closest to them - to rule them out. As Ellie and Jake entered their second week without their little girl and Carnarvon reeled over her disappearance, the case of Cleo Smith brought back memories of the heartache in another small town, 1000 kilometres away, 40 years ago. Mick Murray is a stalwart in the small South West Town of Collie. He served at MP for Collie-Preston and has lived there all his life. He shares how the town dealt with the disappearance of schoolgirl Lisa Mott, who vanished 40 years ago and has never been found. Even though 40 years have passed, the town of Carnarvon reacted in a similar way to that of Collie - with a community united in support of the family, which eventually turned to suspicion when it was realised a criminal investigation was underway. The West Australian reporter Brianna Dugan recounts the tension she witnessed while in Carnarvon covering the story. In this episode, get an insight behind the scenes of a police investigation and an insight into what happens to a town when tragedy strikes. Join host Natalie Bonjolo, and guests Kristin Shorten, Brianna Dugan, Mick Murray and Dr Xanthé Mallett and they take you though days 8-10 in the search for Cleo Smith. Days 3 and 4: It’s now been more than 72 hours since Ellie and Jake have seen little Cleo, and looking at the evidence of the zip and missing sleeping bag, it’s appearing more and more likely that the four-year-old was abducted. In the depths of their fear and desperation to find their daughter, Ellie Smith and Jake Gliddon face TV cameras to try and reach as many people as possible. Despite an overwhelming amount of support, there were also a lot of people who figured themselves as armchair detectives, picking apart their every word, move and facial expression to determine them guilty in their eyes. Seasoned body language expert Allan Pease - who determined from the beginning that Lindy Chamberlain was innocent after she claimed her baby Azaria was taken by a dingo - explains in this episode how, from the start, he thought Ellie and Jake were telling the truth. As they spoke of the sadness and distress of their horrific situation while pleading for their little girl to come back to them, online trolls started a crusade against them. There aren’t many people in the world who know what Cleo's parents were going through, but the parents of murdered teenager Daniel Morcombe - who were in that very position almost a decade ago - sent a message of support to the helpless parents. At the same time, all of this was happening as the desperate search for Cleo continued at the Blowholes, as SES Geraldton unit manager Josh Gardener explains why the search had to be suspended. Join Josh, as well as Natalie Bonjolo, Kristin Shorten and Allan Pease as they take you through days 3 and 4 of the search for Cleo Smith. Alex Meadows is one of Perth's most fabulous hairdressers. She doesn't do your Nan's hair (though she would if your Nan was cool) but instead her IG showcases an array of delectable and delicious colours like rainbow ice creams. Squished together in a stretch limo, talking about hair and what do you do for a buck and suddenly I'm showing Alex my little guy's Instagram and he's booking his first ever gig performing alongside a whole bunch of professional performers. Because I am the ultimate dance mum. During that “what do you do for a living?” conversation, straight after Alex said she was a hairdresser, she said “but I'm running my first huge charity event next year” and I was fascinated. Who decides they can take something like this on with no experience of running events? What could possibly go wrong? And would she tell me if I asked her? I know there are plenty of you in events who have been hit hard by the last 2 years and plenty more of you who would love to do something like this, so Alex agreed to come on So Crisp and share it all – the good, the bad, and the ugly cries.
Daniel Morcombe was abducted and murdered in the Sunshine Coast in 2003 when he was 13. Daniel's parents Bruce and Denise Morcombe have continued his legacy through The Daniel Morcombe Foundation, which was established to make Australia a safer place for children. In this episode Bruce and Denise open up about the strain of that loss on their marriage, the challenges around State and Federal definitions and funding, their thoughts on forgiveness vs revenge. Later in the episode Bruce spins a great yarn on the awkward time someone offered a handshake in kindness, and Denise has some great advice on how to deal with trolls. On 7 December, 2003, 13-year-old Sunshine Coast schoolboy, Daniel Morcombe, was abducted at 1.35 in the afternoon while waiting for a local bus. Such a blatant crime triggered the biggest police search in the state’s history. The recent suggestion of a National Child Sex Offender Register met with favorable approval from the parents of one of the most despicable crimes against a child in our history. Here is that story and how they caught the killer. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Although Queensland police visited Brett Peter Cowan just days after Daniel Morcombe first disappeared in 2003, it took 8 years, an inquest and an incredibly intricate covert operation for them to find a way to convict him of Daniel’s abduction and murder.Warning: please be advised this episode contains graphic content.Show notes for Episode 158:Your hosts are Meshel Laurie and Emily WebbWith thanks to Kate KyriacouLike us on Facebook Follow us on Instagram or TwitterSupport us on PatreonVisit our BookshopListen on Apple PodcastsListen on Google PodcastsListen on SpotifyIf you have any information on the cases covered by this podcast, please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.Thank you for listening! With over 22 years of experience and a passion for children's safety, Conrad is the National Education Manager with the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. He prides himself on a child centric approach and evidence based methods. With a personal and professional motto that “Child Safety Is Everyone's Responsibilty” he spends time communicating the importance of recognises, reacting and reporting concerns. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation is a charity founded by Bruce and Denise Morcombe, in loving memory of their son Daniel. Daniel Morcombe was just 13 years old in 2003 when he was abducted from the Sunshine Coast in QLD. Some crimes are so shocking that they change a nation forever. In revealing the lives and crimes of Australia's worst murderers, rapists and kidnappers in all their horror, Innocence Lost answers the question we ask when we hear about lives taken so ruthlessly: WHY? Seasoned crime writer Amanda Howard has spent 18 years studying and interviewing killers and criminals across the globe to get answers to this question. In interviewing many of these criminals face to face in prison, she is given a rare insight into these faces of evil. The stories of serial killers such as Ivan Milat and Martin Bryant are detailed, as well as double murderer Mark Valera, child murderer Kathleen Folbigg and Anita Cobby's killers. The mysterious disappearances of Daniel Morcombe and the Beaumont children are explored, and we are given an intriguing insight into family killers Katherine Knight, Matthew de Gruchy and Sef Gonzalez. Kim Skubris has been a broadcast news journalist, mostly with the Seven Network in Australia, for 25 years. During that time, she has reported on some of the country’s biggest stories, including Schapelle Corby and Daniel Morcombe, and covered numerous natural disasters locally and internationally. Today, in addition to being a journalist, Kim is a speaker, MC, media and keynote trainer who helps business executives and thought leaders master their message and build connection with their audience. Kim believes everyone has a story to tell, but too many people are silenced by self-doubt and naysayers. "My mission is to lead with the heart in everything I do and bring value to the person, group, organisation or audience I am lucky enough to work with," she says. In this interview with Trevor Young, Kim discusses: the importance of simplifying your story without distorting the factswhy mastering your message is about getting to the heart of what drives you - it's not just an elevator pitchthe power of passion: "If you can't show and share passion with your storytelling and your presenting, then you're going to be dead in the water with your audience" the need to understand your target audience: who am I trying to reach with this particular story?why the story you tell should illustrate the key points you want your audience to take away with themhow a powerful message not only cuts through with an audience, but is later repeated by peoplethe mistake many presenters make: they waffle too much, often feeling they need to tell everyone everything they know about a subject matter, or something close to their heartthe importance of getting off to a good start: you only have 10 seconds to grab the attention of an audience - make it count! Start with a question, a powerful fact, or an anecdote that's short and sharp and to the pointwhy speaking with authenticity is refreshing, and how showing an element of vulnerability where appropriate will help you reach your audience Connect with Kim: LinkedInWebsiteInstagram

Ben speaks to Peter Cousens, the Director and Screenwriter of a new movie about Daniel Morcombe's disappearance
Kate Kyriacou is an author and chief crime reporter at The Courier-Mail. By coincidence, I met with Kate at News Queensland’s offices in Bowen Hills on August 3, the day that her first book was published. It’s called The Sting: The Undercover Operation That Caught Daniel Morcombe's Killer, and it’s a true-crime narrative about a case well-known to every Queenslander, and most Australians, I’d wager, given the high-profile nature of the disappearance of 13 year-old Daniel Morcombe in December 2003. Besides writing and publishing The Sting, Kate is chief crime reporter at Queensland newspaper The Courier-Mail, where she has worked since 2012, following earlier stints reporting in Mildura, Melbourne and Adelaide. Crime reporting is a tough beat: day in, day out, these reporters are dealing with some of the nastiest aspects of human nature. Being immersed in this world can take an emotional toll, which is something that Kate and I discuss in this episode. We also explore the tension of writing a whole book about one of these nasty characters; her experiences as a junior reporter in a regional city and having daily briefing with the local police over tea and breakfast; Kate’s early interest in children’s literature and young adult novels, which remains an area she’d like to explore in her own writing; why she prefers colour reporting over straight news writing, and the traits required for crime reporters to succeed in this taxing business. Kate Kyriacou has been a journalist since 2001. She has written for newspapers around the country, including the Sunday Herald Sun, the Adelaide Advertiser and Sunday Mail, and Brisbane’s Courier-Mail and Sunday Mail. She has been The Courier-Mail’s chief crime reporter since 2012 and has won awards, at both a state and national level, for her work as a crime writer. Her first book is The Sting: The Undercover Operation That Caught Daniel Morcombe's Killer, published by Echo Publishing in August 2015. In the case of victimology there are often forgotten survivors who are also victims. This is particularly the case with crimes of homicide where the actual victim has passed, but family and loved ones must deal with the ongoing effect of the crime. To investigate these issues the parents of Daniel Morcombe, Bruce and Denise, will speak with the students of this semester's Victimology class. Daniel James Morcombe (19 December 1989 – c.7 December 2003) was a 13-year-old Australian boy who was abducted from the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, on 7 December 2003. In August 2011 Brett Peter Cowan, a former Sunshine Coast resident, was charged with Daniel’s murder. In the same month, DNA tests confirmed bones found in an area being searched by police were Daniel’s. What followed after Daniels disappearance was one of the largest and highly publicized murder investigations in Australian history. The experiences of Bruce and Denise will provide a deep understanding of the issues surrounding victimology and a better appreciation of happenings behind the scenes in tragic events like this
