If you grow up in Portland, OR, running is practically a birthright, and for David Laney, it quickly became a way of life: he was already running 5 to 6 days a week by the time he turned 10. After a successful collegiate career followed by a brief stint racing on the roads, David burst onto the trail scene in the early 2010s and has gone on to build an impressive resume of race results on the strength of an unmatched dedication to training in the mountains. This past year, David left his longtime sponsor and joined a relatively new player to the trail space in Craft Sportswear. Soon after signing to run for Craft, he doubled down and took a full-time job helping them launch footwear in running shops across the US. Not too many athletes have that kind of relationship with their sponsors, so we talked to David about how it came about and what to expect out of Craft Footwear in the years to come. Along the way, we also get into his signature ice bath routine; running a self-supported 100-miler to raise money for Charity: Water; his breakout performance at UTMB in 2015; shoe surgery; and much more. David Laney is an American ultra runner and Craft Sportswear ambassador based in the Pacific Northwest. He has placed 3rd and 4th at UTMB and was the winner of the 2019 Rocky Raccoon 100 Mile. Back in the day he ran a 2:17 marathon too! We talk about life on the professional endurance running circuit, ice baths and saunas and his upcoming season as well as discussing some recent races including the 90km Ultrvasan in Sweden (an almost totally downhill event on surfaces including trail, tarmac and wooden planks) and the Desert Solstice 100 track event among others. It's safe to say David excels in multiple terrains and environments. He's also a really nice, humble funny guy.

David Laney is BACK on the show and we are so excited! This amazing ultrarunning talent will be sharing stories of his adventures and training in the rugged backcountry of the North Cascades in Washington State. We'll also chat about his upcoming races (including the Tiger Claw 50 miler) so you won't want to miss it!
My guest today is David Laney, professional ultra-runner extraordinaire, coach and founder of Trails and Tarmac, and the unequivocal definition of a “good dude”. Growing up in Oregon and getting his start in running at an early age, David has grown up to be one of the best and most recognized long-distance trail runners on the scene today. From some of the common misconceptions about trail running to how he got his first taste of the sport on an epic Rim-To-Rim-To-Rim adventure, David covers a broad range of all things running-related. We also get into some of the emotional and mental corners of running that so many people face whether professional or amateur. This isn't an episode about proper nutrition or training blocks before a race and you won't hear us say the word ‘bonk' even one time but instead, you'll get a taste of just how much joy something as simple as running can bring to a person. I can't wait for you to sink into this episode where I don't even try to hide my excitement. And now here's my interview with David Laney. David Laney has long been a top performer and fan favorite in trail and ultrarunning. We've been buddies since 2013 when we took a fun road trip to the Grand Canyon -- a key moment that set David down the road that has led to such a great career. We talk about that memory, David's amazing performance at the 2015 UTMB, the ups and downs he's had since, and his recent change in sponsorship -- moving from Nike to Craft Sportswear. David shares some great info around the realities of training load as a trail runner and the risks of overtraining now that races are off the calendar for the time being. As an elite runner but also a coach to amateur runners, David is passionate about breaking down the barriers that stop people from running – he talks with Riley about some of the most common hurdles and why everyone should slow down. We start episode two briefly discussing the upcoming London Marathon and looking at the main contenders – and also wondering why Mo Farah being a pacer is getting so much airtime. We have another big name guest on Running Things as Riley interviews 2016 Rio Olympian and Bowerman Track Club member Marielle Hall. Marielle talks about how she took decisive action in the 10,000m world championships in Doha, choosing to be an active participant in her fortunes rather than letting the race happen around her. She also talks about a possible foray into marathoning in the future, although acknowledges the grind of solo training for a marathon. We also get to hear about the realities of training in a group like Bowerman, and managing the complex duality of camaraderie and competitiveness. Marielle also offers great insight into the process of writing her guest column in Runner’s World and discusses the reaction from her teammates and the running public.
