They also delve into his experiences at the Hennepin 100 and Tunnel Hill 100 races, as well as his race strategies and competition. The conversation touches on the ultra performance of the year and Taggart's upcoming goals, including his aim to run eight-minute pace for 24 hours at Desert Solstice. Taggart also shares insights into his coaching philosophy. In this conversation, Taggart VanEtten shares his approach to balancing speed and endurance in training, focusing on shorter intervals and progressive long runs. He discusses the periodic training model and the importance of training in specific zones. Taggart also provides insights on training for mountain races in non-vert areas, incorporating strength training, recovering from plantar fasciitis, and developing mental strength in running. He emphasizes the need to envision race day during training and to expect and overcome challenges. Taggart concludes by discussing his coaching philosophy and the importance of supporting and trusting athletes. Takeaways Taggart Van Etten holds the world record for the fastest 100-miler on a treadmill. He has pursued Olympic qualifying times and has a preference for flat 100-mile races. Taggart had a successful race at the Hennepin 100 but faced challenges at the Tunnel Hill 100. His upcoming goals include running eight-minute pace for 24 hours at Desert Solstice. Balancing speed and endurance in training can be achieved through shorter intervals and progressive long runs. The periodic training model, with a focus on specific zones, can be effective for improving performance. Training for mountain races in non-vert areas can involve hill sprints, treadmill workouts, and visualizing the race course. Strength training can be beneficial for injury prevention and performance enhancement, but it should be tailored to individual needs. Recovering from plantar fasciitis may require cross-training, rolling the foot, and gradually reintroducing running. Developing mental strength in running involves envisioning race day, expecting challenges, and finding strategies to overcome them. Coaching and supporting a runner requires understanding their goals, providing guidance, and trusting their training process. Many of you may not know about Chad Lasater, but you should. He's the current champion of the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning (having finished the GS in both 2021 and 2022) and after a breakthrough performance at Desert Solstice (his first real 24-hour race) he is currently in position for a spot on the US team for the World Championships this fall. We recorded this in late 2022, shortly after Chad's awesome run at DS, where he narrowly missed Bob Hearn's 50+ American Record, but I've been too busy to release the show until now—which is great, since Chad has an insanely busy year about to start up. In this episode, we reminisce about the good old days in the late 2010s, when Phil and I were still able to kind of keep up with Chad, and we try to figure out The Secret behind his incredible progress in the sport and how he is able to be running huge PRs into his 50s. Then, it's time for a very entertaining 20 Questions; Chad has raced 25 100s all over the world and has a million stories to share.Links:Follow Chad on IG - zero posts so far!Beer for this episode: Wicked Weed PerniciousIntro music: "Fine Line" by the BloodlettersOutro music: "When I Was Still Young" by Yard Sale

She has been a steadfast presence on the running scene for two decades as she stretches the limits of her performance on the road, track, and trail in fixed distance and timed events. In fact, Pam is the perfect guest for our show because her versatility as a runner knows no bounds. In addition to her track records, some of Pam's most notable trail accomplishments include winning the Western States 100 in 2013, and placing second in Badwater 135 in 2018 (yes that was the hot year!). Pam will be returning to Badwater in July this year in her second attempt.  Since 2020 Pam has gone through the same pandemic struggles we all did, in addition to dealing with a running injury that literally stopped the show for several months. We spent quite a bit of time talking about her return from not running a step in early 2021 to breaking 4 age group records less than a year later, something we think is an even more notable accomplishment.  Pam has gained a lot of wisdom over her years of running and ultrarunning, and we know every runner will gain something from listening to her today. Dave Proctor and Joe Gagnon Chasing Tomorrow podcast show hosts interview Bob Hearn.  Bob Hearn is a 55-year-old ultrarunner from Portola Valley, California.  Hearn did not take up running until he was 38 years old with his first 100-miler being the 2011 Javelina Jundred. Hearn graduated from MIT with a PhD in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. His analytical background plays a huge role in how he plans his training.  Hearn holds or has held several records in timed running events. In 2017 he set the 50–54-year-old age group record for running 24 hours on the road when he ran 152 miles at the Desert Solstice.    Show Notes: In 2019, Bob placed in the top ten all-time for American six-day races when he ran 530 miles at Six Days at the Dome Bob is not totally convinced of the correctness of his pacing model and he has some hope that he can change up his pacing and perhaps run farther than he has in past races Bob is planning to continue to run long races and is aiming to make the United States 24-hour racing team.

Camille Herron has smashed the records with her performance at Desert Solstice this Saturday. Herron broke the Women’s World Record for 24 Hours with a distance of 162.9 miles, the event’s best performance. Herron also claimed the 100 mile American Track Record for Women, with a time of 13:25:00. Herron exhibited blazing speed day and night, and this performance marks an important addition to her already extraordinary trove of awards and achievements. Desert Solstice was a cache of stellar performance on the whole. Distances beyond the 150 mile milestone, already astonishing, are incredibly rare; there were merely a couple in all the preceding months of this year. Yet, five runners from the Solstice roster surpassed that tormenting marker, going 150 miles or more. These are stunning results from a stacked field. Such achievements speak to how important records-based events such as Solstice can be. Other notable performances include Oswaldo Lopez, who has established a new 24 Hour Men’s Record for Mexico with a distance of 139.6 miles, and Andrew Snopes, who ran 144 miles barefoot. Greg Armstrong, coming in third, also completed his 155 mile run in Teva sandals! Some notable participants had to call it early for injury and fatigue, such as Courtney Dauwalter and Zach Bitter. Such impediments are endemic to such long distances, and comprise the central struggle of such events. We are excited for these athletes’ performances to come, in the 2019 season. Cheers to all participants! Camille Herron joins the show after she ran at the the Desert Solstice Invitational at a local high school in Phoenix. It's not your average track meet at a high school. It was a 24-hour track race. She ran a stunning 162.9 miles over 24 hours and finished her first 100 miles in 13 hours and 25 minutes, both new world records on a track. Herron only started focusing on ultrarunning in 2015 after her successful marathon career, in which she won 21 events and qualified for the trials three times. The Oklahoma City native won the Comrades Marathon, a grueling 89K race in South Africa, in 2017, and she entered the Desert Solstice after scratching from several races due to a femur injury. Only 33 runners were invited to compete in the meet, which serves as a qualifier for the 24-hour U.S. national team. (Competitors had to previously run at least 124 miles in 24 hours or 100 miles in less than 17 hours and 30 minutes.) I caught up with Herron on Tuesday for this interview, which initially ran as a Q&A that you can read on SI.com – the link is in the show notes. Now for my podcast listeners, this is the full interview. Uncut. So you get a little extra than what's online to read. We discuss her training, performance and how Taco Bell and beer helped her run just under 656 laps on the track. It's a remarkable performance and I think you'll enjoy the episode so let's start the show. Welcome to episode 69 of the Final Surge Podcast where we welcome world record holder Camille Herron. In 2017 Camille won Comrades set two American Records and two World Records. Camille has had an interesting journey which has been riddled by injuries and we discuss how she has overcome those and what she has learned to make herself a stronger runner. We also talk about her secret weapon in an ultra race, beer. Camille was great to talk to and I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did recording it. We are now on Spotify so please remember to subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, Google Play or Spotify, wherever you consume it.     In recent weeks Camille has set a 100-mile world record 12:42:39, a 100km USA track record 7:36:39 at Desert Solstice and then went on to run for 12-hours and set a 12hr All-Surface World Record 92.708 miles. "When you get intuitive with your body, you can be honest with yourself. That honesty and intuition really have to couple together and that will be your map to help you understand where your body is going."- Zach Bitter   Join The Open Sky Fitness Podcast Group! That's right! We have a closed Open Sky Fitness Podcast group  on Facebook where you and everyone have the opportunity to talk about your health and fitness goals in a safe environment. We post workouts and start discussions about how to be strategic around finding a healthier you. Check it out!   A Short Guide: The New Year Big Gym Rush Before you listen to the interview with Ultrarunner, Coach, 100 Mile American Record Holder, and 12 Hour World Record Holder, Zach Bitter, Rob and Devon had another special guest on the podcast this week. CEO and owner of the Los Angeles StrengthRx CrossFit Gym, Justin Schollard, discussed with Rob and Devon about what to do when the big gym rush happens in January when the New Year Big Gym Rush happens across nation. Whether you're a veteran gym goer or you're just starting to go the gym, you may find the gyms to be over-crowded, a bit chaotic, and unsure of what to do in some situations.   Read on to learn how we can all make the gym a great place to be for everyone.   Make Your Gym a Comfortable Place for Everyone Meet New People & Create a Fitness Community You might feel intimated or uncomfortable when you start going to a gym. You're not sure how to use the equipment, people are lifting heavier weights or are faster at you on a cardio machine, you don't know what to focus on etc. The best way to get comfortable at the gym, is to meet new people. Join a class that interests you such as dance, cycling, or HIIT for example. That way, you get to know other members and trainers at the gym right away. At CrossFit gyms such as Strength Rx, you can automatically sign up to join small classes with only 12-20 people per session. That way, compared to joining a 24 hour gym where you're all on your own, you have the chance to get to know others and belong to a community of people with similar goals. If you are a veteran gym member, try to go out of you way to talk to new members. Even a simple 'hello' or smile will help people to feel welcome at the gym.   Go In With a Plan A lot of people tend to wander aimlessly from one machine to the next without a real plan for the hour that they're at the gym. Instead of going to the gym with no idea what you're going to do, create a plan for yourself. Decide how many minutes of cardio you will do, if today is leg or arm day, how many reps you will do for each set etc. If you know exactly what you're going to do for your workout, you'll feel focused and confident.   Take it Easy Even if you decide you're going to the gym to walk on the treadmill rather than your neighborhood, you still have a plan and it will help you become more familiar with your new gym. Should you ask to cycle in or wait for someone to be done at a machine? Try to cycle in! You can easily make a new friend or workout buddy at the gym by cycling in with another person. It can be intimidating, but people are usually very friendly and will let you cycle in if you ask politely. If somebody is lifting way more than you, like 2-3 plates at the dead-lift for example, it's best to let them finish their set and use the equipment when they're done.   Zach Bitter: The Life of an Ultrarunner Ever wondered what it was like to be and race as an Ultrarunner? This week, Rob interviewed Ultrarunner, Coach, 100 Mile American Record Holder, and 12 Hour World Record Holder, Zach Bitter. Find out how Zach got his start as an Ultrarunner, how to become fat-adaptive, and how Zach trains to compete in 100 mile races.   Discover Your Fitness Zone   "What I've found is that by just keeping your heart rate consistent, your body will experience enough stress so that it can adapt. But the body shouldn't receive so much stress that it need to spend so much time recovery from it." - Zach Bitter   You don't have to go all out to build your body and get faster. If you stay at a comfortable, elevated heart rate, you can easily get into the fitness zone every time you work out. To discover your fitness zone, simply subtract your age from 180. For example, if you're 40, you're fitness zone heart rate is 180. 180 - your age =  approximately your comfortable heart rate zone If you find yourself sprinting to stay at the heart rate or feel like you're just walking, tweak your speed until you find the heart rate that allows you to get a good workout in, but challenges you at the same time.   Train for a 100 Mile Ultra Marathon Zach's advice for training and competing in a 100 Mile Ultra Marathon is to have a good time, but to also be prepared for it. To train for competing in a 100 mile race, you need to design a training program that focuses on the race profile. How elevated is the land? Will you run on flat ground, up hill, or down hill? What is the terrain like? Will you be in the woods, a desert, a field? Create a program that helps you to improve specific skills that will be necessary for your race. For example, Zach finds it difficult to run down hill so he'll train specifically to help his body prepare for running under that type of condition. Have a good time and enjoy the process. If you stress too much or go out to hard in practice or the race, it can be a recipe for an injury.      Cross Training for Running Competitions Zach uses cross training as a means to help him strengthen any of his body's weak areas that need to be addressed such as the posterior chain. His cross training includes: Dead lifts Isolated hamstring exercises Back bridges Kettlebell swings Priming yoga Kinesthetics exercises   How to Follow a Fat-Adaptive Nutrition How do you get fat adapted? We've been told for decades that fat is bad for us, so it can be strange for a person who has avoided fat for most of their life to suddenly begin to start eating it more often. According to Zach, it can take a 2-4 week period to become fat-adapted. During this time, it's best not to not stress out about your training. Take advantage of this time to focus on having a combined fitness and nutrition goal to re-program your body's recognition of fuel. When you follow a fat-adaptive nutrition guideline, you are convincing your body that it's main fuel is fat, not carbohydrates.   Zach's Nutrition This is what Zach includes in his diet in order to be fat-adaptive: Breakfast Tea Coffee Coconut Milk Almond Milk Raw Honey Almond Coconut Oil Post Morning Workout/Lunch Eggs Bacon Stir fry Coconut milk smoothie with possibly: Berries Melons Sweet Potatoes Dinner Stir fry Vegetable based recipes Chicken Beef Fatty fish like Salmon Protein based meals Organ meats that are nutrient dense Non starchy vegetables: Spinach Peppers Beets Avocados Starchy vegetables on high carb days such as sweet potatoes   Become a  Fat-Adaptive Runner  When you transition to being fat-adaptive, you don't have to stop workout out completely, but be honest with yourself. Go easy on yourself because you're body is going through a lot of stress by focusing on eating fats rather than carbs. Your body has to adapt to eating fat and adding exercise can put your stress too high.  You'll notice your body changing when you feel tired and grumpy as you experience the "keto flu." After the switch, you'll feel a lot more energetic.     Start Building Your Own Workouts and Meal Plan! Download Results Tracker here! Zach is an ultra marathon runner and a coach at Zach Bitter Running. Zach has held the 100 mile American record and the 12 hour work record. In this episode we talk about how a runner can make the jump to ultra distances and find out what it is like running on a track for over 400 laps. How did you get your start in running, I am guessing your first run wasn’t an ultra. So let’s start with the really early days. Did you start running in high school, jr high, where does the story begin? What was your high school career like, what type of 5k times were you doing So let’s start out talking about how someone can make the transition from someone who maybe is not an elite runner, but has a few 1/2’s and a few marathons under their belt and wants to make that jump to an ultra. What advice would you have for a runner. Should they start with shorter races like a 50 miler before they jump to a 100 miler? So if someone is running 40-50 miles a week what can they look up for a build up time and what type of volume do you think they need to get to before they toe a starting line? You have someone looking to train and do their first 50-miler, what sort of long run do they need to do before you know they are ready to tackle that? What does a week look like for this person trying to build up for the first time? Now they are spending almost a full day on their feet running, they probably need to be eating and fueling different than they ever have before. What do you recommend as far as learning to fuel for an ultra? Where do you follow on the scale, are you more of a Paleo low carb guy or more higher carbs? You mentioned 150 mile week, is that kind of an average week for you? To simulate the long runs many ultra runners will do two long runs on back to back days, is this something you implement? If you have two long runs back to back how much time are you spending running on those two days? So I am curious, when out running that long, do you listen to anything, music, audiobooks, podcast, anything like that? So you got the 100 mile American record and 12 hour world record in my back yard running at the Desert Solstice. So just to give our listeners an idea, that is 402 laps on the track. I can imagine some thing like hydration, food, restrooms, medical needs all being right there are great, but at the same time 402 laps. What is that like and how do you enjoy it compared to hills? What would you rather do, a trail or a track race? Karl Meltzer is out there on the Appalachian Trail trying to break the record, would you ever have any interest in anything that long? You have a package of training plans available on Final Surge, can you give listeners an idea of what is included in those plans?
